Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    June 24, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race card. The 0.50 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool rolls in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 7 (9:00 PM EST)

2-None Bettor A (5/2)-Drops and Matt Kakaley should be out and rolling. Could get a close-up seat, and this is a beatable field, but the price will be small.
4-Funatthebeach N (5-1)-Fits at this class as long as Jordon Stratton doesn’t have to come from way back off the pace. Should land a good seat here and may leave to get the top. Either way is worth a swing at the morning line price.

    Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

2-Covered Bridge (8-1)-It’s risky but my play will be to fade #8 Energetic Hanover who is seeking its 4th straight win. Stratton could get the jump, land on the point and be tough to tackle.
5-Hellabalou (4-1)-This is competitive affair, will look for Joe B to leave and could land in the pocket. The Burke trainee knows how to win here, has taken 9 pictures in 30 races at the Hill Top.
7-Boiling Oar (10-1)-This rounds out the 3 horses who will be a good price and have enough gate speed to get a decent seat early on. Kakaley will have to provide a sharp steer. Does like the top but should be put in play if that isn’t in the cards as the pace could be hot.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

1-Jahan Hanover (5-1)-Draws the rail, drops and Bartlett will be steering tonight. Should offer a square price and looks like a player.
4-Nuatical Hanover (9/2)-Dan Dube provided a nice steer and came off cover to win the last start with a 55.4 back half. Faces better, could double up following a similar plan and will be much better than 4/5 tonight.
5-Sonny Weaver N (7/2)-Has been in good form and just missed last week versus a well-meant winner. Stratton has the gate speed to get on the engine and make every call a winning one.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

3-Hunting Zone (5/2)-The Lorentzon pupil could be on top or sitting in the pocket behind the morning line chalk #4. Either trip could lead to a picture.
4-Racing Rampage (2-1)-Faced some tough competition as a 3-year-old and only posted 2 wins but banked over $104K. Lands in the Alexander barn, Kakaley will steer and will be making its Yonkers debut. Hasn't had a race on the oval and will still probably be bet down like the race is already over. Not sure the 4-year-old can win if not leading when they turn for the wire.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    2,4/2,5,7/1,4,5/3,4

      #3
      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #2
#1 Versace Summer Would want her on the tickets while making the third start off the break and getting back to a route trip. She wasn't hopelessly embarrassed in a two-turn try with better here last season. Price should be right.
#3 Fight in the Dog Stretchout player could blow these out with her early speed while not meeting much other serious pace, and she proved a good overall fit at this level last time out. Lot of things working in her favor on the stretchout.
#9 Bet the Howes She seems like one of the ones, but she has never been too honest and is no sure thing to show up. Better stuff would do -- she ran OK in a couple route tries last year.
Race Summary Versace Summer isn't much, but there isn't much in here outside of the other listed pair, and she is worth a short look while trying a longer trip with this kind of crew.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #3
#2 Nice Ace Going to try to pair the price from the last race into this chalk who should be tough while stretching out in the second start back. He can probably walk this field along the entire way as the controlling pace. Short price is going to be tough.
#3 Declared A couple of those tries here last season might keep him in the frame with the top choice, but he also has some tables to turn out of the comeback run. Some obvious upside.
#4 Extrasexybigdaddee He has always been super honest over the local footing, but he was no match for the top choice when they met here last season. Not out of the question, but I wouldn't be that excited about landing here at the 5/2 ML offering.
Race Summary Nice Ace is going to get bet hard in here, but he has a lot of things working in his favor today while going second off the bench. He should control the tempo from the start.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#1 Legio Give me a little price in the last with a guy who just took a decent step forward last time out and might have a sneaky chance with any additional kind of step in the right direction. He was competitive here last season, too.
#6 Muttley He can be tough while looking for a third score in a row since showing up with the locals, and his positional pace should leave him in another great spot early on. Forward threat to do it again.
#5 Aesthetically He has typically faced better than the bunch he's going to find today, and he might be able to find a one-paced kind of run that stacks up well enough for a piece.
Race Summary Legio was in the mix at this kind of level a couple times last year, but he still figures to offer a decent number on the board with a bit more room to improve.

        #4
        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Louisiana Downs - Race #1
#2 MDA SENORITA RUN (9-2) Can rally into contention with livelier pace flow in third start.
#4 ABBEY CAKES (3-1) Marked improvement in latest long sprint, out-kicked by the favorite.
#6 LAST WINE FOR ME (7-2) Good speed in first two starts, has to carry it farther for new barn.
Race Summary MDA SENORITA RUN showed some late foot behind a pair of 8-to-5 winners to start her career. She changes riders and should get more pace to rally into at a decent price. Bet to win and place and play a 2-4-6 exacta box.
        Louisiana Downs - Race #2
#5 MID WEST FUN (9-2) Class drop and added ground could make winning difference.
#3 CUPIE CUTIE (5-2) Dueled to stretch in route race at this level, ran third to fall to 0-for-25.
#7 LONG SHOT LOUISE (7-2) Hit board in three shorter sprints locally before troubled trip in latest.
Race Summary MID WEST FUN, second in her first long sprint attempt two starts ago, showed some late interest but was no serious threat at a notch above last out. She gets an extra half-furlong for a hot trainer-jockey tandem. Bet to win and place and play 5-3 and 5-7 exactas.
        Louisiana Downs - Race #4
#1 WESTERN AFLEET (10-1) Speed and the rail, second start for a tag, price stab for new connections.
#5 ROCK SOLID WORDS (2-1) Projects ideal trip in repeat bid for high-percentage claim barn.
        #6 SILKY’S DANCE (5-2) Steady check-getting sprinter, but he hasn’t won since 2022.
Race Summary WESTERN AFLEET was fractious in the gate, but he rushed to the front, dueled with the second favorite through the turn and gave way to the winning favorite and others in the stretch. He earned his top speed figure and is worth a win and place bet to carry his speed a half-furlong farther off the claim.

Race 8 - Maiden Special Weight - 7.5f on the Turf. Purse: $43520 Class Rating: 62

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 120 LBS. IF THIS RACE IS TAKEN OFF THE TURF, IT WILL BE RUN AT 1 MILE ON THE MAIN TRACK.

              RECOMMENDED CHOICES
              # 1 GOOD LOOKING 10/1
              # 7 GO TOWN 5/1
              # 11 OCEAN STAR 20/1
I've got to go with GOOD LOOKING and is a respectable value-based bet given the 10/1 line. Ought to compete quite well in the early pace clash which bodes well with this field. Is hard not to consider given the company run in recently. GO TOWN - Could provide positive gains based on very good recent Speed Figures with an average of 57. Recorded a reliable speed figure in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this contest. OCEAN STAR - Have to consider solely on class, with some of the most respectable class figures of this group. Don't let this filly slip past you. Could prove victorious at a big price.

                Rating:

                #5 HERE COMES LOVIE (ML=7/5)

HERE COMES LOVIE - Have to make this mare a solid contender; she comes off a sharp outing on June 10th. I like this mare. Has the top earnings per start in this contest.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #6 FORGLO (ML=1/1), #2 RED ROSEBUSH (ML=8/1),

FORGLO - I don't normally play a morning-line choice that hasn't been to the track in the last few weeks. RED ROSEBUSH - Hard to put any cash on this mare on the top end. Likes to hit the board though. Doesn't look inspiring to me after the lack of any sort of closing ability on June 10th.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #5 HERE COMES LOVIE on the nose if you can get odds of 1/1 or more

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 3 MISCHIEF JOKE 9/5
                  # 2 STARS N STONES 5/2
                  # 5 AELFGAR 4/1
My pick in this race is MISCHIEF JOKE. Has run well when racing a dirt sprint race. Could beat this group of horses given the 66 speed figure recorded in his last outing. Seems to have a very good class edge based on the recent company kept. STARS N STONES - Change in Lasix (now going off Lasix) may be the secret to a turn around. With Coa on top him, this gelding will most likely be able to break out early in this race. AELFGAR - This pick will feel the med change - now going off Lasix today. Could best this group of horses in this race here, showing very good figures of late.

                    Thistledown - Race #4 - Post: 2:20pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,800 Class Rating: 62

                    Rating:

                    #5 QADIRA (ML=4/1)
                    #6 CHARLOTTES WAY (ML=15/1)
                    #4 WORKING HOLIDAY (ML=12/1)

QADIRA - Houghton and Urieta partnered with one another are a horseplayer's friend. Taking a trip to a lower class rank; has the capability to make her presence felt. This one has increased her speed ratings from a fig of 55 to 59 to 67 in a row. CHARLOTTES WAY - This mare likes to be near the lead. Today's affair is a shorter distance and should increase her likelihood of winning. I like horses that return to a similar class level after dropping at least five class rating points like this one did last out. I believe she'll be competitive at this class level. WORKING HOLIDAY - The jockey and trainer combination have a favorable ROI when they partner up. I believe Trevino is making a good move here. This filly can only benefit from the shorter trip. I like to wager on this handicapping angle, a pony coming back off a good contest within the last thirty days.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 KISS ME ON OCONEE (ML=3/1), #9 KINDNESS IS FREE (ML=9/2), #3 SISTER CODE (ML=6/1),

KISS ME ON OCONEE - 3/1 is not worth it for any horse in a sprint of 5 1/2 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a sprint race of late. KINDNESS IS FREE - The result of third in the last event shows me that this horse may be getting out of condition. This filly earned a rating in her last event which probably isn't good enough in today's event. SISTER CODE - Tough assignment for this horse to beat winners this time after only defeating maiden claimers in the last race. Hard to put any cash on this filly on the win end. Likes to end up on the board though. Finished first in her most recent race with a mediocre speed rating. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this field.
