Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    June 21, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card featuring Eliminations for the Yonkers Trot and Messenger Pace. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 9, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

1-Beach Cowgirl (5/2)-Comes off a good try at this level after being off 3 weeks. George Brennan steers again for the Burke barn and should have enough gate speed to be no worse than in the pocket off the gate.
4-Mandon'tforget Me(7/2)-Winner of 3 straight, the last at this level off a cozy trip. Gets a new set of hands in Matt Kakaley, and he can provide another efficient trip.
5-Silk Cloud A (6-1)-Had an even effort on an off-track and Jordan Stratton returns tonight. That pilot has had success with the mare. Should offer a solid price, could stalk, and then tackle the leader.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

4-True Blue Hanover (5/2)-Had an even effort leaving from post 6 on an off-track The previous 2 races were sharp efforts, and took a picture on 5-24. Holland should have the pedal down and could be no worse than in the pocket when the wings fold.
5-Rockn Philly (8-1)-Gets needed class relief, might be overlooked and Tyler Buter needs to find a live cover flow. If that happens, the veteran mare could win for the 4th time in 13 starts this year.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

3-Tesla Power (8-1)-Ships in from M1 and appears to be a fit with this crew. Has 1/2-mile track experience and did well at Fhld. Has some gate speed and should look to race at the top of the stack. Will take a swing in a race without a standout.
7-Commander Cathy (9/2)-Cathy is 0-18 and normally that is reason to avoid. But this field has 2 others that are winless, and the rest usually avoid cameras. Most of the losses are versus tougher and did race better last week versus this kind, so will look for the upswing to continue.

    Race 12 (10:40 PM EST)

2-Late For Dinner (7/2)-Raced evenly versus better and now drops. This will be the 2nd start on Lasix and was off 3-weeks between races. Looking for a better effort in the 2nd start at Yonkers.
3-My Red Sea (9/5)-Kakaley steers the Jenn B entry and raced better than the line looked in last. Went the back-half in 55.4 and is another who could improve as this is the 3rd start off the bench.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    1,4,5/4,5/3,7/2,3
    Total Bet=$24

Race of the Week: Lady Canterbury Stakes

      June 21, 2024
Race of the Week: Canterbury Park’s Lady Canterbury Stakes | Saturday, June 22, 2024
      by Jeff Siegel
      June 19, 2024

      The Lead:
One of the premier race cards of the 2024 Canterbury Park season is featured on Saturday, with five of the eight races carrying black type status, including the third on the program, the Lady Canterbury over a mile grass for fillies and mares. The Minnesota Horse of the Year in 2022 and multiple regional champion MIDNIGHT CURRENT has been favored in 10 of her last 12 starts and will be so again despite being a bit rusty when second at odds-on three weeks ago in an allowance race in her first outing since September.

      Field Depth:
Since the summer of 2022, MIDNIGHT CURRENT has pretty much owned her chief rival SCENT OF SUCCESS, who had finished behind her six consecutive times until she managed to turn the tables earlier this month by more than four lengths with a career top figure. However, there’re a seven pound weight shift that factors in, so a repeat upset doesn’t appear likely. GYPSY REWARD also enters the race following sharp local win, doing so stylishly but against lesser foes.

      Pace:
THUNDERS ROCKWELL, exiting a series of sprints, is a committed front runner and very likely the controlling speed if allowed to use her best weapon. And if not policed, she can take this group to at least the quarter pole, but after that, she’s on her own. MIDNIGHT CURRENT and SCENT OF SUCCESS have effective stalking styles and will be ready to pounce when given their cue.

      Our Eyes:
      Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-VIRTUALLY: She won six of 10 last year while competing at racing’s equivalent of Single A ball. She split a maiden field sprinting at Colonial Downs in her only prior turf race. Is there any hope? Not much.

#2-BIG BAD DIVA: Claimed for $15,000 three runs back at Oaklawn Park, she was a ground-saving, non-threatening, distant third in the prep for this race June 1. She’s winless in six career starts on grass but has hit the board four times and earned a career top Beyer fig (75) last time out.

#3-GYPSY REWARD: She lacks tactical speed but has never been worse than second (with two wins) over the local lawn and earned a career top Beyer number (80) in a smart overnight score 12 days ago. If the short rest and class hike isn’t too much for her to deal with, she has a chance to be a major player.

#4-MIDNIGHT CURRENT: Purchased for $210,00 out of her previous owner’s complete dispersal at the Fasig-Tipton Digital Sale in April, she never really threatened at 50 cents on the dollar when second in her first race in nine months. She was the runner-up in the 2023 Lady Canterbury but just prior to that she also finished second off a long layoff with a Beyer fig (87) that was seven points better than her comeback fig, and a similar amount of improvement today should be sufficient to get her the money.

#5-SCENT OF SUCCESS: She was 19-1 when she earned a career top number (85) in her victory over MIDNIGHT CURRENT, so the upset win can’t be labeled a fluke. The problem is that in today’s race she must overcome a seven pound shift in weight. All five of her career victories have been earned over this grass course.

#6-GOLDEN GOPHER: Fourth at 27-1 without mishap in the common race that four of today’s seven entrants exit June 1, she certainly qualifies for “horse for course” status (seven wins from 16), but at age seven her best days appear to be behind her, and she sank to the $5,000 level (and was claimed) last November at Remington Park.

#7-THUNDERS ROCKWELL: She employed her usually pace setting/pressing tactics when winning the state-bred Lady Slipper Stakes sprinting on dirt here two weeks ago, but the number came up light. She’s a nice filly with wins in five of 15 starts and earnings in excess of 200K, but her only chance is to get loose early and lull the others to sleep.

      Most Certain Exotics Contender:
MIDNIGHT CURRENT has finished in the money in 17 of 19 starts.

      Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
BIG BAD DIVA would benefit from stronger-than-par early fractions. She’ll need a pace meltdown to win but at 8-1 on the morning line she’s definitely worth consideration underneath.

      Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$15 Exacta Box MIDNIGHT CURRENT, GYPSY REWARD, BIG BAD DIVA. $10 Exacta MIDNIGHT CURRENT over SCENT OF SUCCESS.

Laurel Park, Pick 4 Friday, June 21

        June 21, 2024 | By Frank Carulli
        LAUREL PARK PICK 4
        Friday, June 21, 2024

A pair of crowded 5-1/2F turf sprints surround a pair of evenly-matched allowance races, an inviting combination for the 50-cent Late Pick 4 wager at Laurel Park this Friday, June 21. Here’s a closer look with a suggested $36 ticket:
LRL 6th race 3:00 p.m. EST) -- BARZINI worked forwardly for his seasonal debut but ‘fought restraint’ while 3- and 4-wide and gave way in the stretch. He won both of his turf sprints last year and offers some value in the leadoff leg. GREAT IDEA rallied for two wins and two seconds at this distance on the Laurel Park lawn before a troubled trip when last seen in November. He was bumped at the start, launched a rally from last in the stretch and was full of run when shut off between rivals near the sixteenth pole. HAD TO HAVE HIM benefitted from a rapid pace and rallied for second in a second-level allowance. He will be an underlay but is hard to leave off the ticket.
LRL 7th race (3:31 p.m. EST) -- Going four-deep in this 7F allowance for Maryland breds. ONEOFTHEGOODGUYS ‘finished well’ for second despite lugging in two starts back, then willingly pursued a runaway repeat winner and held second again. He could be cycling toward another strong effort in his first long sprint attempt. CARVELLIAN QUEST won 3 of his last 6 one-turn races on the main track by a combined 10-1/4 lengths and is a viable price play off the claim. Trainer Linda Rice ships in AUGUSTINE RED, who ‘improved position’ and ran third against a runaway repeat winner at Aqueduct. The last-place finisher in that 6-1/2F race came back with a wire-to-wire win in a $50,000 optional claimer. IRISH WARLOCK finished second in 6 of 7 starts prior to facing better rivals going a route of ground on Preakness weekend.
LRL 8th race (4:02 p.m. EST) -- MALIBU BEAUTY repelled a bid by multiple stakes-placed favorite I’m The Boss of Me (5-22, $334k) to win at one mile off a six-month layoff. She cuts back to a distance at which she finished first or second in 8 of 11 starts and gets Lasix again, an angle that has produced 15 top two finishes in 22 starts. HAPPY CLOUDS stayed after hard-hitting, 2-to-5 fave Lightnin Runner (9-18, $256k) and caught her late for an upset win in her seasonal debut around two turns at Charles Town. She’s a model of consistency and has good tactical speed with the rail draw.
LRL 9th race (4:33 p.m. EST) -- CIRILLA set the pace for this far in a triple ‘key’ turf route at Tampa, then she chased odds-on favorite and next-out allowance winner Riley Jean before flattening out on Presque Isle Downs’ all-weather track. CALL TO ORDER debuts off a string of bullet workouts. Her dam, Whyyouask, won at first asking and finished first or second in all three turf sprints. LA BEFANA, bet down to favoritism after six months away, lacked speed but got up for third in the same spot. In her prior 5-1/2F turf sprint she ‘closed well too late’ and into photo-finish view behind Mollie Tapper (2nd in a $20k claimer June 1), eventual Maiden Special Weight winner Run Around Slew and next-out winner No Abstract Moment.

        Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
        LRL 6th Race: 1, 3, 8
        LRL 7th Race: 1A, 2, 3, 8
        LRL 8th Race: 1, 4
        LRL 9th Race: 4, 5, 8
        Cost for 50-cent ticket: $36

Royal Ascot Tips & Preview | Friday, June 21, 2024

          June 20, 2024 | By 1/ST BET
          Lineup

          9:30AM ET | Albany S. (Gr III)

          10:05AM ET | Commonwealth Cup (Gr I)

          10:45AM ET | Coronation S. (Gr I)

          11:25AM ET | Duke of Edinburgh H.

          12:05PM ET | Sandringham H.

12:40PM ET | King Edward VII S. (Gr II)

          1:15PM ET | Holyrood House H.

          Setting the Scene

Just two of seven Royal Ascot winners on Wednesday paid less than $20, showcasing the wide-open nature of these phenomenal races. All but one of Wednesday’s seven $1 Trifectas paid less than $900, making it one of the most lucrative meets of the year. Friday’s marquee event is the Group I Coronation, with Aidan O’Brien’s #5 OPERA SINGER (3/2) clashing with 1000 Guineas winner #3 ELMALKA (7/2) and Godolphin’s undefeated #2 DEVOTED QUEEN (10/1) over one-mile. In the six-furlong Gr I Commonwealth Cup, #4 INISHERIN (5/2) is a tepid favorite in a big field that could produce fireworks at the windows.

          American Runners

The American contingent continues to be shutout on the Ascot stage this year, with Gabaldon’s strong second-place-finish in Wednesday’s Windsor Castle Stakes a lone bright spot. Wesley Ward’s #1 BURNING PINE (10/1) is set to race in Friday’s opener, the Gr III Albany. She was untouchable in her career debut at Keeneland, but the water is much deeper here.

            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

            Churchill Downs - Race #7
#3 Midnight Dajoey He was really sharp in the debut score at Presque Isle, and that might still leave him a bit overlooked while rising to try winners locally. Tactical speed might not be overmatched.
#8 Augusta Melody He comes out of a Lone Star stakes spot and ran well in the two-back Oaklawn score, so he might fit well enough with this group today. Ready for his best in the third start back from the long break?
#5 Cats by Five Grade III dropper has landed a couple stakes placings recently, and he should be in a perfect spying spot while getting some class relief. Obvious player.
Race Summary Midnight Dajoey didn't find the easiest local spot for the level, but I loved his debut score in Pennsylvania, and these types aren't always overmatched in Kentucky anymore.
            Churchill Downs - Race #8
#7 Stylish Sue There isn't a ton of other potential pace lined up in here, and she's almost surely the most committed of it anyway. Her form has come to life since she got on the turf, and she might be able to control this tempo for a third score in a row.
#5 Grecian Goddess Tough call here -- I honestly don't think you'd get all that excited about this kind of form coming in here if it weren't under the Chad Brown banner, but I also don't think this is the deepest race. Might be in the right spot tracking the choice.
#10 Get Twisted I liked her 91/1 upset here last fall a little bit, and she wasn't completely embarrassed in that Keeneland run when trying winners. Back off the break today with route upside?
Race Summary Wouldn't argue too much with anyone who liked #1 Pendulum, either. Stylish Sue has been sharp in a couple turf starts so far, and I think she'll handle this tougher crew today while controlling the race again.
            Churchill Downs - Race #9
#6 Cowboy Code He's back fresh with a couple snappy works along the way, and the July run at Saratoga last year gives me hope for better today. He didn't stay at all here in October, but that race produced a bunch of Kentucky Derby runners this year, so I'm willing to see if he's made of anything more today.
#9 Most Wanted Pretty nice spot for a debuter to land, and this team is always dangerous with these types. Still, the blip in the worktab last month is enough for me to see if she's worth playing against at what is probably too short a price.
#10 Mobster He's going second back off the 16-month break, and there are some pretty tough names if you peek back in his company lines from 2022. Dangerous if he builds off the comeback.
Race Summary So many key races scattered on the pages of this maiden race including big names like Dornoch, Gun Pilot, Stronghold, Resilience, Track Phantom, Nash, and a couple other stakes winners I see at a glance.

              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              Laurel Park - Race #1
#6 FORMAL AFFAIR (4-1) Drops out of triple ‘key’ race, holds tactical edge over main rivals.
#4 MARGIE’S FUN SON (8-5 Had good set-up, ran second at 1-1/8 miles, short rest off Ness claim.
#3 GAME CHANGE (9-5) Exited very strong race two back, came up ‘empty’ in follow-up dirt allowance.
Race Summary FORMAL AFFAIR set a moderate pace on a muddy track, braced for two challengers on the final turn and battled gamely for third. He finished between three next-out winners who averaged a 73 Beyer in those wins. He can use his speed well in this spot and can rate, if needed. Bet to win and place and play 6-3 and 6-4 exactas.
              Laurel Park - Race #3
#1 I’M PRETTY (10-1) Has ingredients to pull off upset for 22-percent new acquisition barn.
#7 STORM CREED (9-5) DQ’d from long sprint victory at Tampa, worked :35.4 bullet for return.
#5 ENEMYNUMBERNINE (2-1) Rallied into fast pace for third, runs for cheapest tag yet, barn is hot.
Race Summary Taking a longshot stab on 5-year-old I’M PRETTY, last seen in a September turf sprint. She is working well for her return, gets in light-weighted from the rail and ran okay off a similar layoff last year against the likes of recent $30k repeat winner Ginger Girl, last out maiden $12,500 runaway Cookie Bank and last-place finisher Lady Ensign, who is 5/1-2-2 in her last five starts. Bet to win and place and play a 1-5-7 exacta box.
              Laurel Park - Race #4
#8 FOURONEOHSMOKESHOW (3-1) Late foot off layoff in first start for a claiming tag, distance suits.
#2 MARTY’S MAGIC (8-1) Eased as fave, dueled and just missed in prior pair, switches to turf.
#3 STORM FORCE (20-1) Showed pulse in ‘key’ 3-year-old debut, wears blinkers for the first time.
Race Summary FOURONEOHSMOKESHOW gained between rivals in mid-stretch but couldn’t reach the two favorites in his seasonal debut at this level. The added ground could make the winning difference in an evenly-matched field. Play a 2,8/1, 2, 3, 4, 8/1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10 trifecta.

                    Laurel - Race #7 - Post: 3:33pm - Allowance - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $48,000 Class Rating: 95

                    Rating:

                    #7 FREEZE THE FIRE (ML=5/1)
                    #2 CARVELLIAN QUEST (ML=9/2)

FREEZE THE FIRE - A repeat of that most recent performance on May 26th where he recorded a speed figure of 85 looks lofty enough to prove victorious in this event. CARVELLIAN QUEST - Lets try to beat the probable favorites with this gelding. Just missed last out, but ran a pretty good race.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #3 AUGUSTINE RED (ML=3/1), #8 ONEOFTHEGOODGUYS (ML=7/2), #6 JAY (ML=4/1),

AUGUSTINE RED - Tough to back a three year old meeting the veterans for the first time. Probably needs more seasoning. This colt registered a speed fig in his last contest which likely isn't good enough in today's race. ONEOFTHEGOODGUYS - Granted the last race was nice, finishing second. The lack of any recent activity raises some concerns though. Disappointing fig in the last race at Laurel at 6 furlongs. Don't feel this entrant will improve too much today. JAY - 4/1 odds isn't enough for this one when examining the most recent showings.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - FREEZE THE FIRE - I'm investing on this one. The bullet work tells me he's fit and ready for action. Do yourself a favor and play this thoroughbred.

                      Race 3 - Allowance - 870y on the Dirt. Purse: $15000 Class Rating: 79

QUARTER HORSE 870Y, FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON THREE RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 124 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS.

                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 3 INVINCIBLE STREAK 1/1
                      # 6 FL RIZZO 3/1
                      # 4 LUNAR SIX 6/1
INVINCIBLE STREAK seems to be the wager in here. Has performed very well recently in longer quarter horse races, posting a nifty 76 avg speed figure. Has been running very well lately and will almost certainly be close to the lead early on. Should be considered based on the decent Equibase Speed Fig recorded in the last contest. FL RIZZO - Exhibits the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 66 Equibase Speed Figure which is one of the best in this group of animals. Martinez will probably be able to get this gelding to break out sharply in this race. LUNAR SIX - Looks very strong for the conditions of this competition today, showing solid figs in longer quarter horse races as of late.

                        Race 4 - Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $21000 Class Rating: 79

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON FOUR RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE MAY 21 ALLOWED 3 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $8,000, FOR EACH $500 TO $7,000 1 LB.

                        RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                        # 5 MEETMEATTHEBEACH 5/2
                        # 4 WAIT A SEC 7/2
                        # 1 CUPIDS GIRL 3/1
I give the nod to MEETMEATTHEBEACH here. Could beat this group given the 71 speed rating earned in her last outing. Has very good Equibase Speed Figs and has to be considered for a wager here. Has raced strongly in dirt sprint races. WAIT A SEC - Has performed soundly lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 67 avg speed figure. With Camacho in the saddle guiding her, this mare ought to be able to break out sharply here. CUPIDS GIRL - With a sound 69 average speed figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's outing. Trainer has very solid win rate (15 percent) at this distance and surface.

                          Rating:

                          #3 BLING BABY (ML=5/2)

BLING BABY - Diego rode this horse for the initial time in the last race and comes right back this race. Got to love a filly who outruns her odds in her debut. Filly did just that back on May 27th. You always have to be on the lookout for bankroll building jockey/trainer combinations; we have it right here. This filly is in fine condition, having run a nice race on May 27th, finishing third.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #9 BLUEBONNET GIRL (ML=3/1), #8 WHERE DREAMS BEGIN (ML=5/1), #6 STACY'S PRINCESS (ML=6/1),

BLUEBONNET GIRL - Recent decreasing speed ratings of 72/64/55 give a sign that this horse may be going off form. WHERE DREAMS BEGIN - Morning line odds of 5/1 make this horse a pass by my criteria. STACY'S PRINCESS - Today's event is 5 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't finished in the money in a short distance contest in the last couple of months. Not the best of signs. Hasn't been doing anything at all lately.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - BLING BABY - The race on May 27th had a class rating of 72 while today's class rating is 64. I got to bet this one on such a big drop.
