Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Northfield Park has a 15-race card with the $1.00 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a 14% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11 (9:40 PM EDT)

3-Saulsbrook Genesis (5/2)-Burke trainee ships back from MVR and lands in a good spot to trip out. Will need an efficient trip, will probably be over bet but best to not overlook.
4-Sure Thing Captain (5-1)-Has raced well at this class and could take advantage of the post draw. Cory Kreiser steers his own and without Aaron Merriman at the controls the price will be better.
6-Liteningonthebeach (7/2)-Merriman sticks with the Bercury barn and when steering for this outfit he posts 25% winners. The plan will stay the same, blast out and play catch me if you can.

Race 12 (10:02 PM EDT)

4-Shamrock (3-1)-Takes a meaningful drop from facing Open company to NW6500. Won the last time in at this level with tonight's pilot, Merriman, between the pipes. Should be a main player versus this crew.
9-Magic Hill (4-1)-AMac steers for the Krieser stable and that has happened only once before. The 4-year-old beat this kind 2 back and could make some noise with a sharp steer. Might be able to land in a good early seat and should offer a square price.

Race 13 (10:24 PM EDT)

4-Downbythewater (9/2)-The Schillaci pupil make its 1st start as a 3-year-old after winning its qualifier at Nfld on
4-17 easily. Should be a player versus this group if tight enough.
5-Unique Catch (2-1)-Took the long way around after leaving from the 7-hole and drew off by 6 lengths against this kind. Draws well and looks like a double up possibility.

Race 14 (10:46 PM EDT)

1-Whiskeyontherocks (6/5)-Blasted out from post 7 and landed on the point but the trip took its toll. The small price is tough to swallow but a picture could be taken with this post draw.
3-Big Bad Mike (20-1)-The last time this veteran got a smooth trip was on 3-18. Left from the rail and came 2nd at this level. Has only 1-win in the past 41 starts but this looks like a beatable field if with a smooth journey.

Santa Anita - Race #2

#3 Buster's Way	He showed a touch of pace last out before quitting again, but he drops into an easier spot today for the first time while not meeting a ton of serious pace. Could stick around today.
#4 Unbreakable Trust	Tactical speed has reliable enough form, but he has been lacking a true final gear in recent starts and could be vulnerable to coming up short here at a mild price.
#6 Adebayo	He's got some of the better form on paper in here, and he's in the mix if he comes back running the way he went to the bench.
Race Summary	Buster's Way has prompted the speed and folded badly in both career starts, but he tries the main track again today against this cheaper group with some pace that could become more live here.

Santa Anita - Race #7

#7 Amorita	I have plenty of respect for the dangerous rail pace, but this one has the kind of turnback speed that might keep her in a perfect spot, especially if the one drawn a spot off the fence forces the issue the whole way.
#1 Cloe	She woke back up in a hurry when getting back to a short turf trip, and her baseline stuff obviously shows the talent needed to win here. That said, it's a longer trip today with one drawn just outside of her who could keep her from getting a serious breather.
#2 Jungle Peace	She probably gets first jump if the rail runner can't see this out, and she obviously likes it here with a couple of sharp local scores to her credit this year.
Race Summary	Amorita turns back with some solid route pace, and I like that she stepped up into stakes company with a good run last time out. Hoping the two pace players keep things honest enough for her to get past from close range late.

Santa Anita - Race #11

#1 Annan	Little bit worried that he's starting to become one of those runners who is just always along a little too late, but I think the price will get a bit better with a potentially cozy rail trip waiting for him.
#2 Zagreus	Like the way he moved forward at second asking, and he's probably quickest to go again today from near the fence. Wouldn't be a shock if he landed this with a small move forward off the comeback run.
#11 Miles Finch	His better form obviously fits well here, but I worry that he's going to get a wide spy at a fairly unappealing price, and I think Zagreus is fast enough to keep him company early -- not sure he can get past horses with any seriousness late.
Race Summary	Annan has some appeal here, especially at anything like the 5/1 ML price. Think he could find himself in a perfect spot to be looking for a seam late.

2^nd race [OC 100k/N1X, 6 ? F] – (5) Briland (A) was an impressive debut winner for Chad Brown at Saratoga in August at 5-2 but she was not the favorite. The second-place horse came back to win her next start. (2) Fortuna Mia made two starts this year in March with a late run for fourth in the Busher and then she was second the whole way in an allowance. (1) Army Gal won a NY-bred allowance by more than five-lengths and came back in six days to try a state-bred stakes. (3) Twirling Beauty was a front-end winner of her debut last month.
3^rd race [NY, Alw 76000 N1X, 6F] – (1) Messi the Magician (C) was bet down from 6-1 to 4-1 in an open company claimer, finished third, and returns to NY-bred allowances after only 17 days. (4) Runandscore has been running at Mid-Atlantic tracks and will make his first start against NY-breds since early in his career in 2023 when he hit the board in a pair of maiden special weights. He was second in his last two races which were in allowances. (5) Schlomo won a maiden claimer against open company in March. (2) Warolo finished second in a pair of these allowances in his three starts this year.
5^th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 6F TURF] – (2) Perugia ran once and that was at Saratoga where she pressed the pace and finished fourth at 7-2 for Linda Rice who has excelled in turf sprints. (4) Wild Mischief had a pair of good turf starts last fall and then struggled on the dirt. (7) Mommy’s Turn will make her turf debut for Chad Brown after a sloppy track start in December. (10) Julita showed some early speed in her two races and savvy trainer David Duggan switches to the grass.
7^th race [OC 100k/N1X, 1 mi] – (3) Garamond was third in the Gotham (G3) in his only try on the Derby trail for Chad Brown. (5) Sand Devil was second in that Gotham and then tried the Wood Memorial but the nine-furlongs was too long. (7) Cornucopian was an impressive debut winner as an odds-on favorite at Oaklawn Park for Bob Baffert with a big speed figure and then set the pace in the Arkansas Derby (G1) and faded to fourth. (4) Keewaydin will make his 2025 debut after a big maiden win and then a try in the Remsen (G2) also for Brown.
Best bets: Briland (2^nd); Perugia (5^th). Best value: Messi the Magician (3^rd); Garamond (7^th).

LUCKY'S SNIPER - This speedball is running a shorter distance today. Should increase his winning probability. Gelding looks like the lone speed here. He may turn the race into a procession. This horse could be tough this time, especially since Americano rode last time out and now should be plenty familiar with this one. DOMINATE - I like the fact that this first timer has been working over the same track he'll be making his debut on. Essex adds Lasix to this one today. I'd look for a pretty big improvement.

HURTS SO BAD seems to be the bet in here. Recent figs for the rider - 24 win percent - make this gelding stand out in this group of horses. Should go to the lead and should never look back. Ran a sharp last race. WINGING WAYS - This gelding has posted some nice finishes in his last few efforts. Overall the Equibase Speed Figures of this pony look quite good in this contest. HATCHET CREEK - Reason to like this gelding as he has in the saddle one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last 30 days.

CLUCK CLUCK - I like to bet on this handicapping theory, a horse coming back off a solid race within the last month. This filly's last speed rating is strong enough to score here, I'll play her back again this time. NICK'S NOTION - Torrealba and Bailes partnered up are a horse gambler's friend. Three consecutive improved Equibase speed figs (59-69-72) make this thoroughbred a solid contender. Getting a break of 6 lbs from last race at Colonial Downs. She should make the most of this advantage.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 DAZZY (ML=9/5), #1 NAVANI (ML=3/1), #3 WEEKEND WIFE (ML=4/1),

DAZZY - This horse just hasn't been winning as the chalk. The favorite is vulnerable here with the lack of workouts. NAVANI - In the last race this less than sharp equine finished fourth. Doesn't bode well for her chances this time around. Don't feel this runner will make an impact today. That last speed rating was somewhat easily forgotten when compared with today's Equibase class figure. WEEKEND WIFE - Tough for me to be playing this type of maiden breaker. Unlikely that the speed figure she registered on April 11th will be enough in this event.

I've got to go with TRUE MYTH. She has been racing soundly recently while recording strong Equibase Speed Figures. Has been racing solidly and has among the most respectable speed in the race for today's distance. Earnings per start in turf route races is formidable for this pony. SISTER NELL - This trainer has done well as of late with entries racing at this distance and surface. NELIDA - Has put up sound Equibase Speed Figs in turf route races in the past. Has to be given a chance based on the competitive Equibase Speed Figure put up in the last contest.
