Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 2/23/25

    February 23, 2025

Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know”
    Sunday, February 23, 2025
    Santa Anita Park
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 1: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: Cuban Confession
    Backups
    : Mysterious Husband.

Forecast: Irish invader Cuban Confession-Ire ran well with better horses (winners) last summer, and the local workouts should have him plenty fit for a winning effort against this moderate older maiden group. The barn sends them fit and ready, and this first time Lasix user gets Frankie and has the kind of tactical speed to be where he wants to be. Yes, he’s a long time maiden but this group is well within his reach. Let’s make him a win play and rolling exotic single.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 2: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: C
Main Ticket:.Dorine’s Wild Cat; Super Elite.
    Backups: 5-Smile Baby Smile

Forecast: Dorin’s Wild Cat fits better with this group and has back numbers that can win. Her return to the main track is another positive factor. In a wide open affair, she should at least outrun her odds. Super Elite has good recent form and projects to enjoy a second flight, comfortable trip. These are the two we’ll give the most attention to, but the best advice is to spread as deeply as you your budget allows.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 3: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: C+
    Main Ticket: Osage Creek
    5-Eligio; 2-Ignatowski.
    Backups: 4-Ride for Gold.

Forecast: Osage Creek drops to the bottom and looks quick enough to daylight this group. Eligio also is tackling easier and should fit well in this bottom maiden $20,000 affair. Ignatowski is basically slow can be an occasional late threat and with a pace meltdown could be heard from late.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 4: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: Special Flower.
    Backups:
    Oobuddakakay; 1-Naismith.

Forecast: Special Flower is entered against the boys today in this modest claiming turf miler and on are pure numbers she’s good enough to win. This is a realistic spot for the C. Gaines trained six year old daughter of Will Take Charge and we’re expecting Frankie to have her along in time.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 5: Post: 2:30 PT Grade: C+
    Main Ticket: 10-General Jackson

Backups: 5-Lookin for Curtly; 4-Southern Tornado.

Forecast: General Jackson gets the worst of the draw but if he can manage to work out a trip from his 10-hole post he should be able to employ a stalk, pounce, and go trip. We like this stretch out and trip and his pedigree suggests he’ll handle the extra distance just fine.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 6: Post: 3:00 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: Butterfly Beach
    Backups
    : Finder’s Choice.

Forecast: Butterfly Beach was given an outing in her debut in a turf sprint last month. She was closing with interest, found her best stride late, and looks ready to graduate in this sprint affair for sophomore state bred maiden fillies. This a filly of some ability and we suspect she’ll be allowed to show it today.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 7: Post: 3:33 PT Grade: B-
    Main Ticket: 10-Man Child
    ; 9-Magic Account; 6-Navy Man.
    Backups: none.

Forecast: This is a tough race. Man Child returns to the main track and projects to have a strong pace presence every step of the way. Magic Account takes a proper class drop and should have enough zip to be dangerous in this $20,000 dash. Navy Man backs up in trip and the route to sprint angle could be very effective.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 8: Post: 4:00 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 5-Jetovator
    ; 4-Doncic; Count of Amazonia
    Backups: 6-Summer Dream.

Forecast: 5-Jetovator is a tough-as-nails turf sprint and is always in this mix at this level over this course and distance. He’ll almost certainly fire a big shot. Doncic has been away but is good enough if ready. The barn does well with comebackers. Count of Amazonia will be dangerous with the class drop, but he’ll need room from his rail draw to have his best chance.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 9: Post: 5:03 PT Grade: B-
    Main Ticket: 4-Stop Digging
    ; 9-Wishes to Riches.
    Backups: 5-Dorie Miller; 10-Sharp Ride.

Forecast: Stop Digging is good enough with her best effort but has been flattening out lately. Back sprinting, she can produce a winning late kick with some help up front and clear sailing through the lane. Wishes to Riches is developing nicely and just earned a career top speed figure here against a lesser field. With another forward move she’ll be in the thick of things again.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
Santa Anita Race 10: Post: 5:33 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: 4-Touchdown Brown.
    Backups
    : 5-Investalot; D D S Express.

Forecast: Touchdown Brown has really gotten good of late. If he can duplicate his recent main track form on grass, he can run this field off its feet again.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

      February 23, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

      XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Northfield Park has a 15-race card with the $1.00 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a 14% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 11 (9:40 PM EST)

4-Cyclone Banner N (5-1)-AMac picks up the catch drive, the veteran was used a couple of times and finished a close 2nd. Has been competitive at this level and took a picture versus this company on 12-29. Will blast out and will go as far as possible on the lead.
6-Back In My Day (7-1)-Won its last race from the 2nd tier and beat this kind on 2-10. That was a nice effort and went off as the 8/5 chalk. Loses Kurt Sugg but Luke Ebersole can work a covered trip and the price is right to take a swing.

      Race 12 (10:02 PM EST)

2-Dirty Dreams (5-1)-Makes the 2nd start off a claim for the Millner barn and raced evenly in last. Greg Grismore needs an aggressive steer with this post draw and should be a square price.
3-Record Machine (12-1)-This is a competitive level for the veteran. Price shot should be in the hunt but needs the right trip for a win. Chris Lems will look to save ground and be close to leader down the lane.
6-Moved Bythe Spirit (9/5)-Ships in from MVR after facing better there and lands in a good spot for a picture. Has beaten better at Nfld and has posted 11 wins in 28 starts there.

      Race 13 (10:24 PM EST)

2-Commander Bob (5-1)-Slow starter knows how to roll late but so far this year it has been too late to post a win. Using because the price should be higher than the morning line, and just in case the choice doesn't have its fastball.
3-Down On My Luck (2-1)-Program chalk should get the point off the gate and not burn much gas. Should be tough to tackle if brings a top try.

      Race 14 (10:46 PM EST)

5-Camouflage Money (9/2)-Ships in from the Mea and lands in a soft spot. Hasn't raced since 1-23 but would be a main player if doesn't need the start. Chris Lems could leave and land on the point or in the pocket and either works for a picture.
6-R Maddy Blue Chip (5/2)-Drops and may have met a beatable field but is only 1-17 at Nfld. Ronnie Wrenn has the gate speed to race at the top of the stack. Will look for that plan and could be a clean trip away from cashing the top check.

      $1.00 Late Pick 4

      4,6/2,3,6/2,3/5,6

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Fair Grounds - Race #5
#1 Reimagine The form is hit or miss, but the two-back run wasn't bad, and something like that might lead to a cozy kind of trip from the fence. One of the ones in a modest race.
#2 Aviso Not much to write home about in the last couple starts, but he flashed a touch of pace at one point that could serve him well in a race without any real speed. Forward chance today?
#5 Ahamo Stretchout player could find himself near the top while trying turf for the first time, and it wouldn't be a shock to see him show the way if nobody else breaks well.
Race Summary Mild race flow could complicate things here, but I think Reimagine should be in an OK spot find a run while adding blinkers from the inside.
        Fair Grounds - Race #6
#8 Sweet Darlin Nothing wrong with her form so far after three perfect starts, and she draws well to track the pace today in a spot with a handful of potential forward players to set the table for her. Dangerous again.
#7 Blessed Assurance She might be along too late, but she has a chance to plug past some of these if the pace heats up early on. The tries on her page outside of stakes company aren't all bad.
#5 Freeburn Dangerous forward player meets some other pace today, but she has been in good groups in stakes company and has flashed some grit when challenged late. Best of the pace?
Race Summary Sweet Darlin has done nothing wrong through three starts, and she gets a pretty appealing race flow on paper to see if she can make it a perfect slate through four tries.
        Fair Grounds - Race #7
#9 Knockalittlelouder Forward player meets a bit of other pace, but he's a pretty committed speed player who could make some noise with these on the rise.
#4 Mysterious Spirit Tactical speed can play on either surface, but he's known to drop in some duds along the way, so it's always a bit tough to trust him. In the mix.
#1 Wicked Secret Reliable finisher has been landing shares this season for the new team, and he benefits if a couple of these hook up in the early going.
Race Summary Knockalittlelouder might be too cheap, but he has some fun pace drawn outside of the other speed that could put him in control of these into the far turn.

            Oaklawn Park - Race #6 - Post: 2:33pm - Allowance - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $130,000 Class Rating: 100

            Rating:

            #11 SPOILER (ML=15/1)
            #7 LAMBETH (ML=10/1)
            #4 B D SAINTS (ML=12/1)
            #2 SHOT OF COURAGE (ML=6/1)
            #6 NULLIFY (ML=3/1)

SPOILER - Gelding looks like the lone speed here. He may turn the race into a procession. LAMBETH - The rider/trainer tandem of Ortiz and Sharp has a strong ROI together. B D SAINTS - My experienced judgement tells me to watch out for this mount in this clash SHOT OF COURAGE - Getting a weight break of 5 lbs from last race at Pleasanton on December 18th. Should be helpful today. NULLIFY - Have to make this colt a contender; he comes off a nice effort on Feb 7th.

Vulnerable Contenders: #10 ETHAN ENERGY (ML=7/2), #9 IMPERIAL GUN (ML=9/2), #3 ONE GIANT LEAP (ML=8/1),

ETHAN ENERGY - The effort in the last race on January 12th probably won't hold up against tougher opponents when they turn for home. IMPERIAL GUN - Tough to invest in any thoroughbred like this that didn't hit the board after the long layoff and comes right back. Had to show me much more than that in the last race. Never made much of an impact. ONE GIANT LEAP - No pace in this group to help set-up his closing rush.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - SPOILER - My calculations say this gelding comes back dominant after an extended layoff and in good shape.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #11 SPOILER on top if we're getting at least 4/1 odds

I think about BOMB CYCLONE here. Has garnered reliable speed figures in turf route races in the past. Overall the Equibase Speed Figures of this equine look very good in this race. OFFICER DERICK - Has been running solidly lately and will most likely be up on the front end early on. Could beat this group given the 85 speed figure earned in his last outing. ADIOS BUCCANEER - He has a good opportunity in this competition as handler, Oconnell, has very solid win clip with horses going this distance. Put up a solid Equibase Speed Figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this affair.

I think ONE MIGHTY EFFORT is a formidable pick and is a very good value-based bet given the 8/1 line. The drastic drop in competition can only help this entrant today. ERICS EAGLE SPIRIT - Could provide positive profits based on decent recent speed figures with an average of 66. Will most likely come out solid - I have liked the way this gelding has moved sharply to the front end recently. ULTIMA DIVA - Overall the speed figures of this racer look very good in this contest. Aldavaz has her trained very well to break promptly out of the gate.

                    Fair Grounds - Race #4 - Post: 2:15pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $52,000 Class Rating: 77

                    Rating:

                    #3 JUST A COED (ML=6/1)
                    #7 J BEAR BEACH (ML=5/1)

JUST A COED - Always beware of the longer priced equine when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. Faced tougher in the last race at Fair Grounds. Based on class figures, this is a weaker bunch, so I will put this animal on my list of strong contenders. Has a pretty good opportunity to break maiden moving over to the dirt in this race. J BEAR BEACH - Taking a trip down in the class scale; has the power to make her presence felt. On board this horse on January 27th and McMahon is right back in the irons in today's race. Got some betting action in only race on January 27th at Fair Grounds, but finished fourth. Has a shot in this race. Expect better today as this filly gets Lasix for the second time.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #2 MOSTLY MISCHIEF (ML=5/2), #5 HEAVENLY SUNSET (ML=7/2), #1 LOW KEY (ML=4/1),

MOSTLY MISCHIEF - I'm foreseeing a lackluster go out of her this time out. HEAVENLY SUNSET - I just don't possess a positive vibe about this less than sharp equine in this event. LOW KEY - Hard to bet this one after not being at the front at 1 mile and now being placed in a race of 6 furlongs. When examining today's class rating, she will have to garner a much better speed rating than in the last race to vie in this dirt sprint.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #3 JUST A COED to win if you can get odds of 7/5 or more

After thorough analysis by the number crunching team, EVER HOPING A comes out as the top selection. Can't miss based on speed ratings which have been top notch (89 avg) lately. This gelding has been racing against some of the most competitive horses in this race recently. That 82 TrackMaster Speed Rating clocked in the most recent affair puts this fine animal in the mix in this race. UNRIVALED HANOVER - Greene has been able to get this harness racer to perform when sending to the post. Definite exotic possibilities. Has competitive speed figures and unquestionably has to be considered for a wager for this one. SILK ROAD SMASH - This harness racer and Skowyra have an excellent working relationship. In the money pct for this pair is high.

We've got a vibe DE LOS CIELOS DEO is going to get the win. Positively the class of the field of starters with an average rating of 85. A nice contender. Tough to pass on this gelding with sharp Noble in the bike. Major player for the win. Considered a solid wager based solely on his high trip to the winner's circle stat. NOME HANOVER - Had one of the most favorable TrackMaster speed figs of the group of animals in his last competition. I'd recommend using in your wagers. This horse could get the triumph here beginning from the Miami Valley 1 position. ONE CORONA TO GO - Many analyzers will recognize the outstanding speed fig in the last outing. Stacks up against any horse in this field of starters. Can't overlook the connections here, a 28 winning percent, one of the most favorable at getting into the winners circle.
