Race of the Week: Gulfstream's La Prevoyante | Saturday

The Lead:
Gulfstream Park's massive Pegasus World Cup Day program Saturday boasts 8 stakes races on the 13-race card, including 7 in a row to end it. Get in-depth team coverage of the signature Pegasus World Cup races in the 1/ST Pegasus World Cup Wager Guide, free here. The undercard race that has me ready to fire is the Race 7 La Prevoyante Stakes for distance turf mares at 1-1/2 miles. It's Race 7 with a scheduled post time of 2:04 pm ET. The day's action gets underway at 11 am ET.

Horseplayers, be sure to take advantage of the 5 Million 1/ST Rewards Points Hit & Split promotions on Gulfstream multi-race bets on the Pegasus World Cup card. Also note there will be up to a $10 money-back special on win bets that finish second or third in the Pegasus World Cup, PWC Turf and PWC Filly & Mare Turf.

Field Depth:
Grade 3 winners CHOP CHOP, LA MEHANA and BEAUTIFUL LOVE have the signature wins, while the first pair also are Grade 1-placed. FOREVER AFTER ALL is Grade 1-placed. This quartet has held the strongest company lines in the La Prevoyante field. Note that BALLADO'S BEACH is a Group 1 winner in her native Argentina.

Pace:
Modest pace as often is the case in turf marathons. MARKSMAN QUEEN may have the most interest in setting the tone, while SHILOH'S MISTRESS, WHATLOVELOOKSLIKE and CHOP CHOP are likely to maintain their inner-post advantages by leaving with the first flight. A deep closer could be compromised by the expected soft pace.

Our Eyes:
Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-SHILOH'S MISTRESS: Mike Maker has a penchant for making star turf marathoners out of experienced horses who move to his barn. This ex-Michael McCarthy trainee won a first-level Churchill allowance at first asking for Maker and now tries elders in stakes company for the first time. Jockey Luis Saez likely keeps her close with the rail advantage in play around 3 turns.

#2-WHATLOVELOOKSLIKE: John Velazquez-Todd Pletcher tandem will try to extend as much as they can out of this New York-bred. She's failed to finish late against open company and hasn't won since August 2023.

#3-CHOP CHOP: $900K purchase in November at Fasig-Tipton as a broodmare prospect, but kept into racing for now by Repole Stable and moved from Brad Cox to Todd Pletcher. She's proven over marathon trips and has a bullet workout for this at Palm Beach Downs. She hasn't run since October and note she's had only 1 layoff line in her career, returning a third-place finisher in a 6-horse allowance as the favorite. That's the only concern as her form stacks up very well vs. these.

#4-LA MEHANA: Amongst a field that is otherwise 0-10 on the Gulfstream lawn lifetime, her Via Borghese Stakes win and Orchid Stakes third in 2 attempts locally really stands out. Proven goods over the 1-1/2 miles grass trip as well at 4: 2-0-1. Consistently strong BRIS late pace figs help the cause. Lot to like about this French export who was Group 1-placed in her homeland before coming to the Christophe Clement barn.

#5-BEAUTIFUL LOVE: Expect bettors to flock to this Godolphin-Charlie Appleby trainee who exits a fourth-place finish (beaten only 1 length) in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. But note 2 starts back she was a no-excuse third to La Mehana, and I'm of the opinion this year's BC F&M Turf was a weak renewal by its own lofty standards. That said, respect this one under William Buick, but expect a shorter price than her real chances.

#6-MARKSMAN QUEEN: Expected pace player hasn't been able to take them all the way in about 13 months, but she should get a pretty easy trip here to take her shot. Graham Motion trainee exits a front-running third in the Via Borghese behind a couple of return rivals in this race.

#7-LADY FIREFOOT: No threat seventh in the Via Borghese at 43-1 and will be a massive price with 2 of 3 career wins coming for claiming tags.

#8-BALLADO'S BEACH: Argentine Group 1 winner returned locally Dec. 26 in the Via Borghese after 8 months away and was an even fifth vs. several of these. Trainer Ignacio Correas has had US success with improrts like this (Didia et al) and would be no shock to improve in this start. Prefer a few others.

#9-YATTA: Dropped all 5 stakes decisions last year vs. fellow 3-year-olds and now takes on elder stakes rivals for the first time. Middle-distance sort tested for the marathon in a difficult assignment.

#10-FOREVER AFTER ALL: Grade 1 Gamely third-place finisher last May at Santa Anita, this Brendan Walsh trainee has been well-traveled. Runner-up by a neck in the local Via Borghese last out in her first Gulfstream try. Runner-up is a key term with her -- as in 10 times from 21 starts with only 2 wins. Consistent and can handle the trip; just usually finds another more brilliant.

#11-QUEEN REGENT: John Gosden export from England has won 1 of 4 since teaming with Brendan Walsh, adding third-place efforts in the Maple Leaf at Woodbine and the Cardinal at Churchill. Deep closer shouldn't be impacted by wide draw, but a slow pace projection will provide the biggest challenge.

#12-AVENUE NIEL: $210K buy in November at the Keeneland sale as a broodmare propsect, new owner Larry Johnson has given this now 6-year-old a few shots at Gulfstream for new trainer Mike Trombetta. She was a no-excuse sixth in the Via Borghese and will have a tough draw to overcome against a tougher cast.

AE #13-GILDED EDGE: No threat sixth in the Tropical Park Oaks at 49-1 and would be among the longest prices on the board if able to draw into the field for Todd Pletcher.

Most Certain Exotics Contender:
LA MEHANA is proven over the course and distance and has pace versatility to keep close if things get too slow.

Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
MARKSMAN QUEEN would be a shock to wire the field, but not without a chance to hold onto a share at a big price in what looks to be an easy pace.

Meet the Contenders: Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn | Saturday

The richest prep so far on the Kentucky Derby trail takes place Saturday at Oaklawn with the $1 million Southwest. The 1-1/16 miles test is the second of the four-race Arkansas Derby series and matches an interesting cast from several different regions of the country. Mystik Dan won the 2024 Southwest in a campaign that saw him draped in roses in Louisville.

Let’s meet the contenders for Saturday’s Southwest (Race 10):

#1-GAMING: Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity winner and Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up looks to rebound from a flat third as the odds-on favorite in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity. Trainer Bob Baffert owns a record 6 Southwest victories, including 2022 (Newgrange) and 2023 (Arabian Knight). Flavien Prat jumps seats to Patch Adams, opening the mount for Juan Hernandez, who rode him in his debut score.

#2-PUBLISHER: 4-race maiden was runner-up to return rival American Promise in his Dec. 29 first spin over the Oaklawn oval. Trainer Steve Asmussen has 3 Southwest wins on his ledger, most recently Silver Prospector in 2020. Son, Erik, has ridden in each start to date, all top-3 placings. Pedigree includes American Pharoah, 2015 Triple Crown winner and Oaklawn stakes winner, as well as Derby runners-up Pioneer of the Nile and Proud Citizen in the first 2 generations.

#3-MONET’S MAGIC: Since starting his career 0-4, he’s put together back-to-back maiden and allowance victories. The Ben Colebrook-trained colt by Good Magic won his Oaklawn unveiling Dec. 29 over a sloppy track. Late runner will need a strong pace to set up his rally while making his stakes debut.

#4-TIZTASTIC: Tiz the Law colt was a 2-time turf winner at Kentucky Downs, including the Juvenile Mile Stakes. Transferred form to dirt with graded stakes placings at Churchill Downs in the Street Sense and Kentucky Jockey Club. Trainer Steve Asmussen has 3 Southwest wins on his ledger, most recently Silver Prospector in 2020. Son, Keith, takes the mount as Cristian Torres will ride Sandman in the Southwest.

#5-RENDER JUDGMENT: Trainer Kenny McPeek seeks back-to-back Southwest wins after Mystik Dan’s romp a year ago. Blinkers go on this son of Blame, whose 1-4 mark includes a Churchill maiden breaker. Fifth in the Kentucky Jockey Club and more recently third in Fair Grounds’ Gun Runner, he’ll get a new rider as Brian Hernandez Jr. will be at Gulfstream with Mystik Dan in the Pegasus World Cup. Emmanuel Esquivel, a regular for McPeek at Oaklawn, gets the call.

#6-SANDMAN: $1.2 million Tapit colt exits an Oaklawn allowance win Dec. 13 that got him back on the beam after finishing fifth in the Iroquois and third in the Street Sense at Churchill Downs. Finished neck behind rematched rival Tiztastic in the Street Sense over this 1-1/16 miles trip. Broke his maiden at Saratoga over Innovator, who last week finished a game third in the Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds.

#7-PATCH ADAMS: Closed as the 12-1 second individual wagering choice in last week’s Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3 (only behind San Vicente winner Barnes at 6-1). Romped vs. maidens in his second start Nov. 30 at Churchill Downs by 10-1/2 lengths and received a 98 Beyer Speed Figure in the process. Son of Into Mischief is out of the 2-turn Tampa stakes-winning mare Well Humored. Trainer Brad Cox won the 2021 Southwest with eventual Belmont Stakes winner Essential Quality. Flavien Prat gives up several key mounts at Gulfstream on Pegasus World Cup Day to ride. Trio of bullet workouts at Payson Park in Florida signal sharpness.

#8-AMERICAN PROMISE: $750,000 colt is by 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify. Sixth-start maiden breaker last out Dec. 29 in wire-to-wire fashion. Ran clearly his best career race (95 Beyer Speed Figure) over a wet track. Close pursuits in prior starts behind Southwest rivals Monets Magic and Render Judgment doesn’t put him far off the locals. D. Wayne Lukas’ lone Southwest winner came with Big Sur in 1992.

#9-BON TEMPS: Maiden was an even, but non-threatening fourth in the Jan. 4 Smarty Jones Stakes at 28-1 odds and will be a bigger price here vs. a tougher field. D. Wayne Lukas’ lone Southwest winner came with Big Sur in 1992. Son of Lukas’ 2018 Preakness and Travers-placed Bravazo. Bullet workout Jan. 17 locally for this fourth career start.

#10-SPEED KING: Churchill debut sprint winner extended around 2 turns nicely with a game second in Remington Park’s Springboard Mile on Dec. 13. Led late and was collared by Coal Battle, who since returned to win Oaklawn’s Smarty Jones to open the Arkansas Derby trail. Jockey Rafael Bejarano is tied for the most Southwest wins all-time (3). Ron Moquett trained 2015 Southwest winner Far Right.

Fair Grounds - Race #5

#3 Rare Ruby	Check her out on the tote and track ahead of this, but she's not meeting a whole lot on paper in this one while going first out for a barn that does OK work in these kinds of spots. Worried she's going to get bet a bit as other players see all the same benefits to this fresh face.
#2 Mckinzie Magic	She's another who will go first time out in what feels like a pretty soft spot to land, and she has turned in a couple of forward-seeming works ahead of this.
#1 Peppermint Bites	There are more logical players in here than this one, but she at least showed a tiny bit of late enthusiasm in the career debut and might be able to plug along for a piece in a race without any proven finishing punch.
Race Summary	Rare Ruby debuts for a capable team while finding a pretty modest group on paper -- even for this auction-restricted special weight. Guessing she's live.

Fair Grounds - Race #7

#13 Ash Wednesday	She only goes if this comes over to the main, but that seems possible enough a few days out after this week's snow. She might get an OK trip from the wide draw in what should draw down to a smaller group on the dirt.
#10 Hope Mission	She can probably be tough on either footing after a really solid dirt route debut run, and she finished well clear that day of another interesting player today -- #12 Churning Berni.
#8 Sophie's Cruiser	She stepped her game up with that big run last out at 54/1, and she's probably the most committed pace again if this one stays on the turf. Interesting on the lawn.
Race Summary	Ash Wednesday has some appeal if she draws in, and I'm hoping the presence of Hope Mission will keep the price playable in the case it rains over to the dirt.

Fair Grounds - Race #8

#9 Somekinda Mischief	I like how quickly he bounced out of that last one to return in the morning, and now he'll cut back off that hard fade while meeting a modest group.
#7 Lick Skillet	He's one of a few interesting firsters who I think can make some noise, so take a look at him on the track and tote ahead of this.
#4 Our Favorite Son	Forward player makes his local debut while turning back, and I wonder if he might have a little trouble keeping up with a quicker tempo at this trip. Obvious player, but I'm not 100% sold.
Race Summary	Somekinda Mischief doesn't have much form, but these auction races don't always come back the deepest, so I could see him making a bit of noise with that route run and follow-up work to his name.

#9 SUMO (6-1)	Better sprinting, sheds 4 pounds, can end long winless drought at this level.
#5 SUNSET TOWN (5-2)	Prominent throughout in same spot with blinkers added, just missed.
#2 BRAZILLIONAIRE (8-1)	Packs last kick, seeks first win on the dirt in his $250k career.
Race Summary	SUMO’S speed mission going a route of ground backfired, but it could set him up well for a return to sprinting at a distance which he earned $115k. He was winless last year but ran well enough in defeat a few times to factor at this level. Bet to win and place and play 9-2 and 9-5 exactas.

Laurel Park - Race #2

#6 JUST THE THING (5-1)	Slowed by pace, surged late into photo-finish view, runs longer.
#5 TITIAN TYRANT (3-1)	Has a win and two seconds in her last four starts at this distance.
#3 QUIT QUAY (5-2)	Steady sprint numbers at this level, tries new distance for third start this month.
Race Summary	JUST THE THING ‘closed fast late’ but couldn’t reach the pace controller and settled for her third consecutive in-the-money finish. She’s 0-14 at Laurel but the added ground and livelier pace could make the winning difference. Bet to win and place and play 6-3 and 6-5 exactas.

Laurel Park - Race #5

#7 FAINOR’S FILETS (15-1	Better than latest win appears, use in all gimmicks at a big price.
#3 ALWAYS LAUGHING (7-2)	Carried speed this far in deeper route fields but came up short in lane.
#6 TAM CHAR (5-2)	Six-figure Laurel Park earner won 4 of her last 11 starts.
Race Summary	FAINOIR’S FILETS saved ground tracking a 3-prongued duel for the lead, lost valuable momentum at the top of the stretch while poised for a rally, but found room in time to spring a 9-1 upset at Penn National. She steps up in class but the extra furlong should be much to her liking. Bet to win and place.

Gulfstream Park Pegasus FULLCARD Hotlist - January 25

1^st race – (6) Bulldoze is a firster from Pletcher who seems ready for a nice effort. (4) Kunan is another firster who should be a solid runner. (8) Thorness adds to the talented firsters in this field. (11) Up for an Oscar should get a long look.

2^nd race – (5) Disruptor is another firster from Pletcher who merits top consideration. (7) Bob Mo was a good second who should be a main rival. (6) Jimmy’s Dailys was fourth last time and can move forward here. (8) Santal could be a threat here.

3^rd race - (6) Full Nelson missed by a neck in a stakes and gets a major switch to Irad. (2) Atone should be effective at this level. (9) Saratoga Flash has speed and could be tough to catch. (11) Raptor’s is working sharply for this start.

4^th race – (5) Sand and Sea loves this course with four wins in six tries and gets top billing here. (3) Tutta La Vita may enjoy a switch to Tapeta. (7) Dana’s Beauty looks like the one to reel in here. (6) Sun Bee should pose a late threat.

5^th race – (6) No Nay Hudson usually turns in a good effort and looks best in this field. (9) Nobals could be the main threat on his best try. (12) Coppola has enough speed to be a top contender despite the outside post. (1) Johnny Podres will benefit from a fast pace.

6th race –- (11) Jerry the Nipper won his Tapeta debut and can make it two in a row here. (2) Emanuel is one of the turfers who could excel here. (5) Classic Mo Town should be closing quickly at the end. (9) Tidal Forces is 3 for 3 on this course and cannot be overlooked.

7th race – La Prevoyante Stakes (G3) - (5) Beautiful Love only lost by a length in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf and looks best here. (3) Chop Chop should put in a strong try in her first race for new connections. (4) La Mehna should welcome the added distance. (6) Marksman Queen fits in nicely with this field.

8^th race – The Fred Hooper Stakes (G3) - (6) Instant Coffee will be helped by a dry track. (5) Tumbarumba seems to like finishing second. One more time! (3) Rocket Can cuts back to one turn after a stakes win at a longer distance. (9) Cape Trafalgar will be better suited by this distance.

9^th race – William L. McKnight Stakes (G3) – (11) Bold Act missed by a nose last time at this distance and can make amends here. (1) Limited Liability will be helped by a ground-saving trip. (12) Cash Equity has some talent but has a tough post to overcome. (6) Lord Eddard Stark actually cuts back in distance after a marathon stakes win.

10^th race – The Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G2) - (10) Sacred Wish is in excellent form after a Grade 1 win and gets the nod in a competitive field. (1) Raqiya could be tough to reel in from the rail. (5) Fluffy Socks belongs in the exotics. (6) Dona Clota is an interesting arrival from Chile.

11^th race – Inside Information Stakes (G2) - (9) Emery has won four of her last five starts and stands out here. (7) Mystic Lake shapes up as the main foe. (8) Olivia Darling should enter the picture in the final furlong. (2) Nic’s Style seeks a third straight win and cannot be ignored.

12^th race – The Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1) - (7) Nations Pride should bounce back with a winning effort here. (6) Major Dude chases a third straight win and will be formidable (5) Integration usually turns in a good try against top company. (4) Win for the Money comes off a good third and merits consideration.

13^th race – The Pegasus World Cup (G1) - (4) White Abarrio had a few beneficial efforts in a sprint and should be ready for a top effort here. (6) Stronghold is a Grade 1 winner who seems on edge for a big effort here. (2) Saudi Crown has inside speed which is important at Gulfstream. (11) Locked has impressive credentials but drew a tough post.

3^rd race [Interborough, 7F] – (4) Cara’s Time (D) was bet down from 8-1 to 6-1 as she moved from a victory in a NY-bred stakes race to running fourth in the Garland of Roses against open company. (1) St. Benedict’s Prep missed by a nose in a stakes race at Laurel Park. She finished in the top three in 9 out of her last 12 starts and that includes five wins with four of those going seven furlongs. (7) Socially Selective returned from a 10 month layoff to finish second in the Sugar Swirl at Gulfstream Park. She did not run worse than second in her six career starts. (5) Dame Cinco returns from a June layoff when she won her last two races and moved through her allowance conditions.

5^th race [Clm 16000 N2L, 7F] – (6) York Tavern (A) finished third after he ran wide the whole race and tried to rally on a speed favoring track. Blinkers come off and he comes back in a week again and will run for the third time in two weeks. (8) Golden Purchase was second in his last two starts which were at this level and he cuts back from a mile. (2) Mr. Mendelsohn was third in his most recent two races at this level. (1) Aleah Aleah will drop down to the lowest level of his career and has early speed to use as the blinkers go back on.

6^th race [OC 45k/N1X, 6F] – (6) Lady Mine (B) raced wide on an inside favoring track in her second start after a layoff and finished third. (1) All Class and (1A) Sarir make a Linda Rice entry where they are both win contenders. (3) Justthefactsjack was last seen in May winning his maiden at Aqueduct in his second start. (5) Striker Has Dial has a tendency to finish second which he has done four times including last month.

9^th race [Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (6) Radauti (A) moved from turf to dirt, rallied from last to second, finished well clear of the rest of the field, and now as a 3-year-old gets Lasix for the first time. (2) Laird of Magnolia (D) was bet down from 7-2 to be the 6-5 favorite as he moved from turf back to dirt. He ran fourth and now changes barns. (1) Tracking Error made his second start three weeks ago and finished second when he stretched out in distance. (8) Hot Spun was second in his debut in one of those $50,000 maiden optional claimers that have been popular in New York this winter.

Best bets: York Tavern (5^th); Radauti (9^th). Best Value: Cara’s Time (3^rd); Lady Mine (6^th).

The $1 million Southwest Stakes (G3), Oaklawn Park, Race 10, 5:10 p.m. ET

(1) Gaming was second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and should rebound from a disappointing try in the Los Alamitos Futurity. (7) Patch Adams exits a fast, impressive maiden win and will be the main threat. (6) Sandman comes off a solid allowance win and will be helped by a fast pace. (10) Speed King is fast enough to overcome the outside post and could control the pace. Betting strategy: 1 to win. Exacta and trifecta box: 1-6-7-10.

Race 10 at Oaklawn Park | Saturday January 25 | Post Time 5:10 PM Eastern

Southwest Stakes – Grade 3 | Purse $1 Million | Three Year Olds | One Mile and One Sixteenth Analysis and top contenders:

American Promise (8) just broke his maiden, in his sixth career start, but he did it at Oaklawn and at the distance of this race. Apprentice Tyler Bacon, who Hall-of-Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas has had a lot of faith in, rode the son of Triple Crown winner Justify marvelously and the colt earned a career-best 102 Equibase Speed Figure which is the second highest/fastest last race figure in the field. Three races back and with the addition of blinkers, American Promise improved markedly when stalking in second for the first six furlongs, moving up to lead and battling down to the wire. He regressed one month later but rebounded nicely in that race four weeks ago. Considering the horse’s pace and final figure combination of 102, 102, it is apparent American Promise DID NOT slow down in the stretch, and as those “go to the lead” tactics worked so well last time out they are likely to be used again. Considering there are few horses in the field who have shown an interest in leading early, American Promise should be in the top two or three entering the first turn, and if he improves off his last effort, he can post the mild upset in this year’s Southwest Stakes as he opens at 6 to 1 odds.

Sandman (6) is the horse mostly likely to run down American Promise if that one can’t lead all the way. Like American Promise, Sandman won at Oaklawn last month and that experience could be invaluable in this situation. His win came in an allowance race so was his second victory in five races. Between his maiden win and the one last month, Sandman finished fifth in the Iroquois Stakes (around one turn) and third in the Street Sense Stakes at the distance of the Southwest. Torres rode Sandman for the first time last month and rode him exceptionally well by getting the colt to relax until the far turn when he moved up from fifth to second, then easily overtook the leader. Earning a career-best 97 Equibase Speed Figure that he can improve upon, this half-brother to multiple stakes winner She Can’t Sing ($883K in earnings) has a nice shot to win as well.

As to the likely favorites Patch Adams (7), who starts at 5 to 2 odds, there is no doubt his 10 length win on November 30 (when last seen) was impressive, but it was in a seven furlong race. Although he’s bred to run well at the distance, that race may have been an outlier in terms of the 110 Equibase Speed Figure. Additionally, when looking at Brad Cox’s record, which overall is phenomenal in the last few years, the one area where it is not is horses in graded stakes stretching out to routes as three-year-olds, which is just 2-2-4 from 16 starts the last three years, including a sixth-place finish in the 2023 Southwest. So, sure, Patch Adams could be a top Derby contender this year, but he may not have the edge in this field some bettors think he has.

Similarly, Gaming (2) opens at 2 to 1 odds, is no standout at all. He won the first two starts of his career, both around one turn, including the Del Mar futurity, but DID NOT improve around two turns. He ran second around the track to his stablemate (trained by Bob Baffert) Citizen Bull in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, then he ran evenly when third for the last eighth of a mile in the Los Alamitos Futurity last month. His best effort, that in the Juvenile, earned a 103 figure, which is not superior in any way to the 102 American Promise earned much more recently. As he is trained by Baffert, Gaming will take a lot of bettors’ money, and that is fine with me as I will be taking a stand against him as a win contender.

Honorable mention goes to Publisher (2), who opens at 12 to 1 because he’s still a maiden after four races. However, he finished second to American Promise last month with a career best 100 figure and may have a chance to be part of the exacta. Also Speed King (10), who opens at 15 to 1, gets a poor post but improved to a 95 figure in only the second start of his career last month when second to Coal Battle in the Springboard Mile Stakes, with the winner having come back to win the Smarty Jones Stakes last month at Oaklawn.
