BALL ST over No Illinois by 6
It’s easy to make fun of a team when they’re stuck in a down cycle but our
usual ‘Gonad’ jokes about Ball State are rapidly disappearing in favor of
outright astonishment. Brady Hoke’s boys from Muncie are as close to perfect
as you can get: 8-0 SU, 8-0 ITS and 6-1 ATS, with their lone ATS defeat coming
last time out versus Eastern Michigan. And with the price currently hovering
in single digits, we wouldn’t be surprised to see longer lines at BSU’s betting
window than what we’ve seen at the polls. However, as we’ve stated before,
undefeated teams feel the pressure ratchet up with every passing week and
can’t be trusted laying points late in the season. That notion is bolstered by
some great numbers favoring Northern Illinois in this matchup. The Huskies
have covered four of the last fi ve games on this fi eld, they’re 4-0 ATS away
off consecutive home games, they’re 5-1 ATS as weekday dogs and they’re
4-1-1 ATS lately when playing with conference revenge. But here’s what we
like best: NIU has held each of its last fi ve foes season to low – or 2nd low
– yardage. With the year Ball State QB Nate Davis is having, we wouldn’t
give the Huskies a look unless we thought they could match up defensively.
Don’t be surprised to see Jerry Kill and his Ball-busters drop the ‘Nads to 1-5
ATS playing with rest.
AKRON over Toledo by 4
Jeez, another MAC weekday game! We haven’t seen any ratings numbers
for this year’s telecasts but we wonder how ESPN can keep a straight face
when sending out invoices to game advertisers. Akron is currently stuck in a
MAC East logjam and needs a win here to keep pace with Buffalo, a feat the
Zips should manage against a Toledo team that’s come apart at the seams
in 2008. Even more troubling for Rocket fans is the recent announcement
that longtime head coach Tom Amstutz will be stepping down at season’s
end to become the school’s chief fund-raiser (what’s that all about?). Toledo
owns an uncharacteristic 0-4 SU record at home this year and has misfi red
in fi ve straight games after facing CMU. But one look at Akron’s current 0-3
SU record at home (and its 4-1 mark away) tells us why the visiting team has
cashed in six of eight Zips’ games this season. Your call.Comment

3 Unit Play. #4 Take Over in Edmonton @ Columbus (7:35 pm NHL Center Ice) The Jackets have been a strong over team all season long and have went over tonight’s posted number three straight games. Edmonton is in the midst of a long road trip and combined for nine goals in their victory last Sunday in Philadelphia. This is a pick’em game and thus we will not worry about who wins this one and just collect with the over.

4 Unit Play. #5 Take Northern Illinois Huskies over Ball State (Wednesday 8:00 pm ESPN 2) Both squads are coming off of a bye week and that should give the Huskies a slight edge because of the status of QB Nicholson. Tradition has a lot of points in this match-up, as the last seven years have averaged 60 points per game. The Cardinals certainly have the better offense, but the better defense lies with the Huskies. As I dig deeper into this match-up, I believe that NIU has played a more difficult schedule. Common opponents are Toledo and Eastern Michigan and the results are very similar. In 2007, Ball State won in DeKalb; however, one must remember that the Huskies at a hospital full of players last season. In this game I feel both team are equal and all the pressure lies with Ball State and their pursuit of perfection. Points look very attractive for a team that I feel could win outright. I felt the line would be seven, but getting near a field goal more then that makes this a strong play with the homer, as the Cardinals survive a tough Wednesday battle. Another blowout NBA win with the Suns last night.
Northern Illinois has an excellent defense. Ball State is undefeated, therefore we get a nice, fat, inflated pointspread here. We'll be making just a small wager on Northern Illinois tonight.Comment

Northern Illinois +9 over Ball State
Ball State is the most overrated 8-0 team in the history of College Football. They have a great QB, but had one of the softest schedules you could ever have. Northern Illinois on the other hand could be an 8-0 team as all of their losses have been close. This Northern Illinois defense has played solid all season, but in the last few weeks has taken it to a whole new level. This will be a great game between a good offense in Ball State and a good defense in Northern Illinois. Look for another tight game. This spread is too high.
Toledo/Akron Over 54.5
Toledo has a pretty bad offense as they give up over 30 points a game. Akron is right behind them and have looked pretty bad on defense the past few games. Toledo has struggled on offense at times, but tonight should be able to spread out and have their way against Akron. Its hard to predict a winner because both teams cannot be trusted on defense. There should be a ton of points in this game. Take the Over.

5* Best Phoenix -3 at Indiana
Yes the Suns will be playing the second of a back-to-back, but Phoenix has looked impressive on the road and was so far ahead Tuesday in New Jersey that most of the starters got ample rest. The Pacers have been off since Saturday's huge win over Boston, but they have no answer for Amare Stoudemire and Shaq inside.Comment
