        DWAYNE BRYANT

        Just a SMALL action wager.

MLB - New York Mets at Houston Astros - 8:05 p.m. ET
Bet #906 Houston Astros -115 (Niese & Rodriguez MUST START)

The Mets are just not hitting at all right now. They've managed just TWO total runs in their last three games. They're only hitting .234 against lefties on the road this season, scoring 3.05 runs per game. In their last 10 games, the Mets are batting just .180 and scoring 1.95 runs per game against lefties. So this is not a good time for the Mets to be running into a white-hot Wandy Rodriguez. Rodriguez has allowed one run or less in SEVEN of his last nine starts. He owns a 0.84 ERA and 25/2 K/BB ratio in his last three starts. Jonathon Niese has pitched well for the most part, but I just don't think he'll get enough run support from the struggling Mets lineup. The Mets are 0-5 in Niese's last five starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance, while the Astros are 5-0 in their last five home games vs. a left-handed starter AND 7-0 in their last seven home games vs. a team with a road winning percentage of less than .400. I'll take Houston & Rodriguez for a SMALL action wager tonight.

            The Duke's Sports

            Houston (-115) for 3 Units

The Astros lineup has hit lefties well this month (.321 BA) and should get the best of Jonathon Niese who is overdue to get hit. Niese is 0-5 on 4 days of rest and 1-6 over his last 7 starts. Houston has won five straight at home vs lefty starters. And Niese shouldn't get much run support; after all, the Mets' lineup is batting a poor .180 vs lefty starters this month and are a disastrous 3 for 34 with runners in scoring position. They'll face Wandy Rodriguez who is in excellent form with a 0.84 ERA over his last 3 starts. The Astros are 20-9 at home with Rodriguez starting. The Astros have won 9 of their last 11 at home and sport a 17-5 mark at home vs teams under .500. Houston the call.

              Chip Chirimbes

              Blue Jays at A's
              Pick: A's

The Oakland A's (57-58) have proven to be a tough opponent at home where they are 10 games over .500 at 34-24 and that gives them an advantage over the Toronto Blue Jays (61-55) who are an even .500 at 29-29 on the road. Add that the A's are 6-2 in their last eight home games. Brett Anderson the A's starter has been tough to hit allowing less hits than innings pitched. TAKE OAKLAND!

Matchup: N.Y. Giants at N.Y. Jets
                Time: 8:00 PM EDT (Mon)

Play: N.Y. Jets (-2 -110) SOLID GOLD PLAY

The first full week of NFL Pre-Season action winds up tonight with the annual battle between the Giants and Jets. One thing that was apparent this weekend was that the unhealthy teams struggled, and that is bad news for the Giants, who will have several bodies on the sidelines tonight. As for the Jets, they're in excellent shape with only two players expected to sit this one out, and one of those is a free agent rookie. Both teams have a short turnaround with games coming up on Saturday. The Jets are apparently going to plays the first unit a little longer here and not as much against Carolina next weekend. Better health, more time for the starters and the fact the Jets are talking it up pretty good have me convinced the chalk is the right side tonight. I'll spot the points with the Jets.

                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Matchup: Seattle at Baltimore
                Time: 7:05 PM EDT (Mon)
Listed pitchers must go: (R) FISTER, D vs. (R) BERGESEN, B

                Play: Baltimore (ML -124)

Brad Bergesen's overall numbers are pretty ugly. But ever since Buck Showalter took over the managerial reins for the Orioles, Bergesen has gotten red hot. He's in very impressive form over his last three starts and that bodes well for the righty tonight as he matches up with the feeble Mariners. Doug Fister has done a decent job for Seattle, but he's been much tougher at home than on the road. I also like the fact that the O's were dynamite in their first home stand under the new skipper, and I see no reason they cannot maintain their good play at Camden Yards against this horrendous traveler. I'll go ahead and lay the reasonable number with Bergesen and the Orioles.

                -------------------------------------------------------------------
                Matchup: Toronto at Oakland
                Time: 10:05 PM EDT (Mon)
Listed pitchers must go: (R) MARCUM, S vs. (L) ANDERSON, B

                Play: Oakland (ML -127)

There is a little downside to backing Oakland tonight. The A's didn't hit a lick this weekend at Minnesota and they're up against a tough pitcher tonight in Shaun Marcum. But Marcum has struggled in his last couple starts, and the Blue Jays have a lousy record when facing southpaws. That's where Brett Anderson comes into play. The talented A's lefty is healthy at last and is pitching that way as well. Despite the very poor offensive showing against the Twins, things should get better for the A's as they get back home and I like them to top Toronto in tonight's series opener.
