Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Pick 5 Analysis

    June 17, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway begins the week with a 10-race card. The 0.50 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool starts in Race 5, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 5 (8:20 PM EST)

3-Kerford Road A (9/2)-Will toss last, now makes the 2nd start for the Alexander barn and 1st call driver Matt Kakaley takes a seat. Has beaten this kind but needs a trip. Should be able to get its preferred journey of racing at the top of the stack.
5-Genuis Man (7/2)-Took advantage of a quick pace and dominated this kind 2 back. Jordan Stratton can work the same stalking trip as that night and roll by for another win.
6-Ozone Blue Chip (9/2)-Hasn't won since being claimed by the Bucci barn on 5-11. But has been in the hunt in the last 3 races and could be ready for a picture if Daniel Dube is aggressive off the gate.

    Race 6 (8:40 PM EST)

2-Backstreet Shadow (7/2)-Takes a significant drop-in class and this should be wake-up time. Makes the 1st start for the Renaud barn and Brent Holland does the steering. Will look for this pilot to leave and may get a nice pocket ride.
4-Moonshine Kisses (5/2)-Drops and beat similar 2 back with George Brennan at the controls and he has the lines tonight.
Should be out and rolling when the wings fold and could make every call a winning one.

    Race 7 (9:00 PM EST)

3-Rocknroll Runa A (7/2)-Returns to town after missing a start due to a sick scratch on 5-27, qualified and then raced evenly from post 7 at YR. This is a soft spot if ready to battle and could get the jump on the one below.
5-Semi Tough (5/2)-Bumps up after just falling short in a quick mile but fits well with these. Knows how to win and still has good speed. Winning here could simply boil down to getting a better trip than Runa.

    Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

2-Its A Me Mario (7/2)-Uber consistent 4-year-old has won 7 of 12 and has been all over the wire in every race this year. Will use until there are signs of form slipping.
3-Pound For Pound (3-1)-The Laterza barn lost this 5-year-old for $50k on 5-27 and claimed back for $75,000 on 6-10. Sometimes horses show a big improvement from 4 to 5, as is the case here. Has simply destroyed the $50k and $75k claimers and shouldn't be out of place with this crew.
4-Pleaseletmeknow (4-1)-This 5-year-old hasn't raced badly but can't seem to find the winning spark. Might have tossed a hint of being ready to win after being used hard into a 26.3 opening panel. Outraced his 18-1 odds to come 3rd that night and will take a swing thinking the price will be much better than 4-1.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

2-Roling With Sam (9/2)-Drops and this grinder may have landed in a spot to cash the top check. Gets a new set of hands in Kakaley and he knows how to roll off cover at the right time. There should be an honest pace, which won't hurt chances, and could be overlooked so the price will be right to use.
3-Himself N (4-1)-Was put away for about 7-weeks after getting scratched sick back on 3-28. Since returning to action has finished 2nd twice and won on 6-6. Steps-up but there are question marks in this field so will string along looking for another picture.
4-Taste Of Honey (9/2)-Ships in from Plainridge and lands in the Per Engblom barn. This class will be a test but there really isn't anything to fear in this group. Will rely on the connections having the 4-year-old ready to win and did bank over $141K last year.

    0.50 Pick 5

    3,5,6/2,4/3,5/2,3,4/2,3,4

      #3
      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
#3 Googly Eyes She was second best behind a well-meant winner in that last one, and she might still offer a midrange price against another competitive group. Might find a good spying spot with some outside pace lined up.
#1 Solair Could see her getting a really cozy run from the inside while settling and letting the outside pace types sort things out early on. She obviously handled the track well enough.
#7 No Tappin Out She has always been sharp over the local footing, so that easy score last out at 50 cents on the dollar wasn't a huge surprise. This kind of level has previously been just a little bit tough for him, so I wouldn't love being here at too short a price either way.
Race Summary Googly Eyes could have a little room to come forward in the second start back off a four-month break, and I like that she was clear of the show horses behind a good winner last out.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#8 Roi Soleil He might still be a little light overall, but the form is solid with a tough winner on the page in his last one. Could see him getting the right kind of trip.
#11 Mr Skylight He rallied well in Grade III company last time out after a slow break and early antics that left him with too much to do, and he is likely to be much more tactical today. One of the ones.
#4 Adios Now One of many in here with a chance for a piece, I like that he's quick enough to sit close but doesn't need to engage the most committed early players. Better draw might leave him in a perfect pressing spot?
Race Summary Think you're allowed to have a little fun in this race, and you can make a case for half of them. Could look at #12 Vote No, #2 Buccherino, and #1 Ponce de Leon on the deepest tickets if you are really leaning on someone else in another race.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #4
#1 Sister Eve Solid lean here as she goes second out after what feels like a useful debut run. She made a decent move into contention and was just flat late, but she might sustain that sort of effort a bit better with that race under her belt.
#4 Modarosa Tough call. She's probably supposed to win this with something like her last, but she's at least a mild question mark over the surface and has been just a touch one-paced late so far. Threat, but probably not for me at the likely price.
#3 Reigert Girls Her better stuff keeps her in the picture, but I worry that she'll again be along too late. Wouldn't argue too hard with anyone landing here, but I've already given her a few chances.
Race Summary Sister Eve still has a little upside today, and she draws well to save ground and launch her run. I have mild questions about the other listed pair, but they both make sense.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Louisiana Downs - Race #1
#2 CHI TOWN HUSTLER (5-2) Ideally spotted for front-end score, barn 21 percent with class droppers.
#4 JULIA’S WARRIOR (9-5) Bid into slow pace, gets class relief, changes riders again, one to beat.
#6 DEEP STATE (6-1) Showed pulse in five-horse field, will be running late, use in gimmicks.
Race Summary CHI TOWN HUSTLER sped clear and held ‘gamely’ despite finishing out of the money for $15k two starts back at this distance. He was overtaken by winning favorite Hardly Able (11/3-3-2) and can make good use of his speed in this spot. Bet to win and place and play a 2-4 exacta box and 2/4,6/4,6 trifecta.
        Louisiana Downs - Race #2
#4 ANDIAMO GIACOMO (9-2) Can he handle turf, will he run if race stays on turf?
#8 SMARTY ALEX (7-2) Beaten favorite in same spot, merits second look off prior grass form.
#5 SPARKIN (5-1) Has turf victory, could take some catching at decent price.
Race Summary The field is a combined 35/2-3-5 this year. That bodes well for ANDIAMO GIACOMO, who clearly has the best recent main-track form, though the 7-year-old has never raced on turf. Play a 4-5-8 exacta box.
        Louisiana Downs - Race #3
#3 LOUDTHUNDRHEVYRAIN (3-1) Takes catching on cutback to 5-1/2F, could pay off on recent claim.
#4 QUICKDRAWMCGRAW (5-2) Drew even at top of stretch but was out-kicked at 6F.
#7 ZAPAWAY (7-2) Rounding to another good race in third start of cycle.
Race Summary LOUDTHUNDRHEVYRAIN chased a fast pace and finished third behind a pair of deep closers as the favorite. He returns off similar rest for new connections and should be the target in this field. Bet to win and place on today’s Best Bet.

Race 6 - Maiden Special Weight - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $32600 Class Rating: 75

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS.

              RECOMMENDED CHOICES
              # 5 AELFGAR 5/2
              # 8 PENTANGELI 7/2
              # 12 DON ANTONIO 15/1
My selection in this event is AELFGAR. This gelding must be given consideration just off the earnings per start in dirt sprint contests alone. Has posted sound speed figs in dirt sprint races in the past. He has been running soundly and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the strongest in this field. PENTANGELI - With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Flores will most likely have this gelding in excellent position to win the contest. Has been running soundly lately and will almost certainly be close to the front end early on. DON ANTONIO - Is a solid choice - given the 65 speed figure from his most recent race.

Race 3 - Optional Claiming - 7.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $16500 Class Rating: 76

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON A RACE OTHER THAN MAIDEN, CLAIMING, STARTER, OR RESTRICTED OR WHICH HAVE NEVER WON THREE RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 117 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE IN 2024 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $10,000.

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 1 DIXIE MO 6/1
                # 2 REASONABLY LOVELY 4/1
                # 3 JJ'S AMERICAN DIVA 9/5
My choice in this race is DIXIE MO. Displays solid Equibase Speed Figures on average overall when matched with the rest of this group of animals. Looks very good to be close to the lead at the first call. Has to be carefully examined for this event if only for the very good Equibase speed fig put up in the last contest. REASONABLY LOVELY - Ali has been on fire the last month, winning at a nifty 21 percent clip. Could best this group based on the speed figure - 81 - of her last outing. JJ'S AMERICAN DIVA - Wagerers should probably take a good look at this one as this mare has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this field. Has solid early lick and will probably fare soundly against this group.

                  Mountaineer Park - Race #7 - Post: 9:30pm - Optional Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $23,800 Class Rating: 95

                  Rating:

                  #4 SAILING ALONG (ML=4/1)
                  #5 KITTEN CALLS (ML=7/2)
                  #2 LARIMAR (ML=3/1)
                  #6 LOADED ONCE MORE (ML=9/2)

SAILING ALONG - The morning line odds on this mare are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of handler Silva. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins. The Silva barn does well with horses off the claim. Just claimed this magnificent animal, expect an improvement That 86 fig this mare recorded in her last affair tells me she's a big time player in today's event. KITTEN CALLS - This mare is in good condition. Ran third on May 17th. I like to see consistency in a racehorse. Look at this mare's PPs. Almost always in the money. Oliveros is reunited today with this horse after enjoying some pretty nice success riding in the past. LARIMAR - Popular angle - 3rd or 4th start after a vacation generally leads to a big effort. Today's the day. LOADED ONCE MORE - I think this mare is ready to run a good one. She's had enough races since the layoff and should be fit. This mare is in superb condition right now. Finished first last time out and comes back promptly. Here is a true horse for the course. Loves the track here at Mountaineer Park.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 FAIRY CAKES (GB) (ML=5/1), #8 TEMPLEMENT (ML=5/1),

FAIRY CAKES (GB) - Tough to go with this steed at 6 furlongs after displaying no speed at 1 mile. Finished second in her most recent performance with a quite unimpressive speed figure. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this field. TEMPLEMENT - Doubtful that this pony will be at her best this time off the long breather. Maybe next out. The Brain always cautions me to stay away from thoroughbreds in short distance contests that haven't hit the board in short distance races recently.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #4 SAILING ALONG on the win end if we get at least 4/1 odds
                  EXACTA WAGERS: Pass

                  TRIFECTA WAGERS:
                  None

                    Louisiana Downs - Race #5 - Post: 5:45pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,500 Class Rating: 69

                    Rating:

                    #7 CAJUN ACES (ML=8/1)
                    #6 AVERI EVER AFTER (ML=4/1)
                    #4 SHE'S TAKIN OVER (ML=7/2)

CAJUN ACES - Was in a $5,000 Claiming race at Louisiana Downs last race out. That event had an Equibase class figure of 75 and she is moving down in this event. A certain serious competitor. A win percent like 33 is outstanding for any jockey/trainer twosome. You probably should disregard that last affair at Louisiana Downs in the slop where she finished outside the top 3. Should do well today without the slop. AVERI EVER AFTER - Have to give this mare a good chance. Ran a good effort last time around the track within the last month or so. SHE'S TAKIN OVER - That last race at 7 1/2 furlongs was too short. She'll love the added distance today. This mare registered a good figure of 74 in her last event. That speed fig should be strong enough to triumph today. Three consecutive improved speed figures (51-69-74) make this thoroughbred a solid contender.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #2 REALITOS (ML=3/1), #8 MARDI GRAS ALARM (ML=5/1), #5 EMMAS RULER (ML=6/1),

REALITOS - May 8th is the last time we've seen this filly around. Have to be a little bit leery. MARDI GRAS ALARM - Notched a disappointing speed figure last out in a $5,000 Claiming race on May 28th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that figure. EMMAS RULER - Just cannot play this pony. Didn't show me anything positive in the last race or on Jan 5th. This mare notched a speed rating in her last affair which likely isn't good enough in today's event.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #7 CAJUN ACES to win. Have to have odds of at least 4/1 or better though
                    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [4,6,7]

                    TRIFECTA WAGERS:
                    Box [4,6,7] Total Cost: $6
                    SUPERFECTA WAGERS: None
