Could be considered for this race if only for the very good TrackMaster speed fig earned in the most recent contest. PICKS NOTES
#5 Professor Higgins Nothing yet from him through a couple well-spaced sprint tries, but he'll find an easier spot today while racing fresh with a pedigree that suggests the surface switch might not be an issue.
#6 Regimental His better stuff makes him tough in here while dropping out of special weights, but he has wildly inconsistent form, and I wouldn't want to be here at any kind of modest price to find out if he can finally punch home.
#8 God of Wine He'll go second off the break after a no-show comeback run at Keeneland, but he passed a few going short in his only previous turf try, so maybe this trip will suit him well.
Race Summary Professor Higgins hasn't had the easiest of runs through two starts while facing better, but the hope is this easier spot and turf route will help wake him up a bit off the layoff.

Fair Grounds - Race #7
PICKS NOTES
#6 Fleet Frost Solid lean here second time out after a chasing effort in the debut run at Delaware, and she has a little bit of pace in a spot where that might help her find a great spot near the top early.
#5 Ba Dee Ya Modest kinds of lines so far, but she exits a race won by a fillly who landed a stakes race in her next start and then went to the Breeders' Cup. Worry she's overbet.
#1 Union Mist She has some upside while moving around two turns off the sprint debut run, and she showed a little bit of mild interest late that day. Could easily see her moving forward to land this.
Race Summary Fleet Frost makes a lot of sense in here after tracking the speed going short first out, and she might be in the right kind of spot to dictate this race from the start.

Fair Grounds - Race #9
PICKS NOTES
#5 Gavel He tracked the pace in the Hawthorne debut and gets a tougher test today, but he should be in the picture throughout for a team that might be ready to make some noise here this winter.
#3 Hero Worship Firster deserves some looks simply for racing out of the Cox barn, and I'm going to be honest -- I don't have a great feel sometimes for which horses from this barn are going to be livewires. Will be reluctantly considering a lot of horses like this here this season.
#7 B Fifty Two He's another one going first out, so get a look on the track and tote, but the barn has been pretty reliable in a bunch of different types of spots this past year, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him ready to go.
Race Summary Gavel has an experience edge on some of these and will certainly need better against this group in New Orleans, but he's fast enough to find a good spot and see if he likes it here.

RACE 1

By the Glass (#2) and Extra Dirty (#6) figure to attract support after hitting the board in a similar spot at a slightly lower level last month. The former obviously has upside as she makes her second career start for Richard Dutrow, who has won with his last four starters on the NYRA circuit. I’m just not thrilled with the quality of that race and prefer some rivals who are dropping in class. Don’t Listen (#4) is one such runner, though she may not have been facing a field that was significantly tougher than this last time at Laurel. Her early speed makes her a strong contender in this spot, but I thought others would offer better value. Dorothy’s Dreams (#5) is dropping in for a tag for the first time in her career after disappointing in her last couple of tries at the maiden special weight level. However, this will mark the first time that she’s competed in a dirt sprint since her debut, where she made a strong late run for second, albeit in a slow race. She might have some upside going back to dirt. My top pick is She She’s Shadow (#3). She’s another dropping into a claiming race for the first time. She finished third but was distantly beaten in both prior starts. However, she was against a speed bias in her debut over a muddy track at Saratoga. Then last time she was off a step slowly before staying on for third against a better field. She’s probably getting the class relief she needs while also receiving a rider upgrade to Dylan Davis.

#3 SHE SHE'S SHADOW, at 4-1 or greater


RACE 3

Durante (#4) was assigned the top weight in this Grade 3 Fall Highweight handicap, but that shouldn’t deter the 4-year-old gelding, who has been in fantastic form since the summer. He’s won 5 of his last 6 starts, most of those victories coming since he was transferred into the David Jacobson barn. He was arguably a little unlucky in his lone loss during that streak two back when unable to overcome a pace duel in the slop. He then turned around just 13 days later, and got back to his winning ways in the Bold Ruler, outdueling pace rivals who were ultimately beaten by 6 and 28 lengths. While he hasn’t posted TimeformUS Speed Figures that are quite as high as a few of his rivals, his consistency and determination make him hard to deny in this spot. It also helps that he drew outside of his main pace rival. That’s the major knock against Rotnkee (#2), who would obviously be dangerous if he were able to repeat the 120 TimeformUS Speed Figure he earned for winning the Hudson last time. He was a convincing winner that day, fending off early challenger Today’s Flavor, who faded last time, before holding off the closers. Yet he was able to get his preferred outside stalking trip in that spot, and now he figures to be under the gun from an inside post position. The wild card with regard to the pace scenario is Win for Gold (#5), who ran a career-best race in the Hudson. Expected to be challenging for the lead, he tossed his head at the start and was off about 5 lengths behind the field. Yet he adapted his running style to make a closing move into contention at mid-stretch before flattening out. It was a big step forward for a horse ascending out of softer allowance races. The question now is whether he makes use of that newfound dimension to rate behind horses, or goes back to his previous front-running style. If the pace heats up, it will suit Bold Journey (#1). He got the right setup when he won an optional claimer two back, just getting his nose in front at the wire. He seems to be back in top form after a turf experiment earlier this year. He does seem to run his best races at Aqueduct, but he has to prove that he can be as effective at the stakes level. The TimeformUS Pace Projector is predicting a situation favoring Durante, and I tend to agree that he’s mostly likely to work out the right trip, given his post position and ability to race on the lead or from a stalking position. If it turns into a test of will down to the wire, I have confidence in him to fend off a trio of rivals who have all been fainthearted at times.

RACE 6

A pair of 3-year-old filly stakes winners returning from layoffs are intriguing contenders in this optional claimer. Stonewall Star (#2) has the strongest overall form, having won 3 stakes, including a pair of New York-bred stakes events over this track. She even held her won when stepped up against Grade 2 foes in the Beaumont when last seen in April. She had to adapt to rating tactics that day, but she’s generally been best when she can flaunt her early speed. There is other pace in this spot, but she seems quick enough to make the front if she’s ridden aggressively. However, Horacio De Paz is just 3-for-32 (9%, $1.09 ROI) off layoffs of 150 to 300 days over the past 5 years, so she might need a start. The other horse returning from a layoff is Malibu Moonshine (#1), who won a couple of stakes at Laurel as a 2-year-old. She has the opposite running style, closing from far back when she’s been successful. She attempted to make a return this summer at Laurel, and appeared to be launching a rally in upper stretch before flattening out. Something may have gone awry that day, as she’s since been off for another four months. Charlton Baker is 6-for-59 (10%, $0.90 ROI) with horses returning from 90 to 180 days over 5 years. I prefer a runner with experience. Some may consider Royal Poppy (#7), but she’s a “last time” type after paying over $20 when she won an N1X allowance event in October with a career-best speed figure. That victory also came over a sloppy, sealed track, and she has done her best running over sealed surfaces. My top pick is Rachel’s Rock (#4), who seems to be gradually improving since returning from a layoff this fall. She needed her return when fading a bit after chasing the improved Quick Munny. She then wasn’t racing on the best part of the track when chasing inside on Oct. 12. She returned 16 days later and put in her best effort yet despite settling for third again. She chased a very fast early pace, lost contact on the turn, and then was trying to mount a rally in the lane before having to alter course around a tiring leader. She has the versatility to work out the right trip this time, and it’s encouraging that she’s not being risked for a tag coming back at the same level as last time.

First Race
1. Acclaimed Preacher 2. Highlands 3. Sakura Blossom
Improving 2yo filly ACCLAIMED PREACHER enters this starter allowance turf mile off a decisive maiden route win on synthetic at
Golden Gate. The filly ran well two previous turf tries including a third over the Del Mar course in summer. Each start better than the start
before, no reason she cannot win right back. HIGHLANDS trounced maiden-40s on turf at Indiana Grand, then was sold privately after
not meeting a $65k reserve at an autumn sale. HIGHLANDS won her only start by more than eight lengths, the knock is the 2-3-4-5
finishers ran back and did not hit the board. Last-out maiden-claiming sprint winner SAKURA BLOSSOM is the speed of the field, first time
long and potentially loose on the lead. Speed has not been great this season at a mile on turf. Through Sunday, only one of 17 turf
miles was won by the pacesetter. SAKURA BLOSSOM merits respect nonetheless.

Second Race
1. Cool Papa G 2. Storm the Night 3. Princip
Overmatched in recent N1Xs, COOL PAPA G drops to $40k claiming N2L and returns to preferred distance/footing. The two best races of
his career were dirt sprints including a relatively fast midpack finish two back at Los Alamitos. Blinkers on, the route-to-sprint class-drop
gelding can rally for the win. STORM THE NIGHT figures among the favorites off his fast maiden-50 win on the DMR track in August.
He subsequently cracked against a strong starter allowance field, but now drops in for a tag and meets less speed. Front-runner 'NIGHT
probably is the one to catch. PRINCIP was compromised by a wide trip last out. He was caught four- and five-wide through the turn and
flattened out late. This field is slightly easier. BRACE FOR IMPACT adds speed.

Third Race
1. Mega Moon 2. Sanger 3. Goldeneye
Runner-up both recent starts against similar N2L starter allowance turf milers, MEGA MOON is the logical choice. His runner-up finish
last out was validated when winner Beef Winslow returned to win (via dq) his next start. Minor pedigree note: MEGA MOON is a sibling
to G1-winning juvenile Locked, who ranks among the early 2024 Derby candidates. SANGER stretches out following an okay fourth in a
starter allowance turf sprint. A sibling to multiple graded winner Closing Remarks, this mile trip should be within range. GOLDENEYE,
off two months, returns to the turf course/class level at which he finished second in summer. DISCRETIONARY DAY drops slightly from
Calbred N1X, and ST IGNACIO put it all together here opening weekend with a 23.06-second final quarter maiden win. The light bulb
finally went on in the 11th start of his career. He is a contender right back against winners.

Fourth Race
1. Big Buzz 2. Settecento 3. Good Juju
Runner-up with a wide trip last out at SA, BIG BUZZ moves up one level and returns to the DMR dirt track on which he has won 2 of 4.
The challenge is pace. 'BUZZ rallies from behind, the pace scenario is uncertain. SETTECENTO has speed, he had an awkward trip last
time finishing fourth in the race the top choice exits. SETTECENTO broke first but was rated, he checked and steadied on the backstretch,
re-challenged two-wide, dueled and cracked at the eighth pole. The uneasy trip provides a legit alibi. If he uses his speed and gets
comfortable while racing in the clear, he fits perfect. GOOD JUJU was the beaten favorite in the same race as the top pair. He set the pace
and cracked. Claimed off the third-place finish, he might be the one to catch.

Fifth Race
1. Stagger Lee 2. Smiling Jojo 3. Fact Or Fiction
STAGGER LEE is likely to improve off a better-than-looked sixth-place debut in a similar turf sprint for 2yo Cal-breds. He was steadied
and hard-held in traffic early on the backstretch, blocked into and through the stretch, and finished with run. His effort was much better
than his finish position indicates. A full brother to stakes winners Connie Swingle, S Y Sky and Grazen Sky, STAGGER LEE should

CHAOS REIGNS stretches to a route for the first time in a soft maiden-20. Bred to run long, with a bad-trip alibi for finishing fourth as
the favorite last out, the gelding can handle this group with a front-running/pace-pressing trip in the eighth start of his career. MY
PARTNER GLEN is uncertain on dirt, dropping from a series of Cal-bred maiden special-weight races on turf. BARTON STRONG
stretches out from a pair of even-paced sprints. His running style suggests two turns will be his deal. TOKAMAK might be listed too low,
his 82-Beyer runner-up finish last out at SA would be fast enough to win this.

Seventh Race
1. Speaking Scout 2. Francesco Clemente 3. Balladeer
East Coast-based SPEAKING SCOUT returns to the DMR course on which he won the G1 Hollywood Derby last year; the late-running
gelding can win this G2 at a mile and one-half. He has never tried a marathon distance, but returned to top form this season and meets
modest California locals. The last-out third by 'SCOUT in a SA G2 was better than it looks. The course was unusually speed-biased Oct 1,
'SCOUT was the only closer to make an impression. He rallied from far back to miss by less than two in a race dominated by speed. If he
can stay this 12-furlong trip, 'SCOUT can rally for the win. FRANCESCO CLEMENTE will attempt an ambitious class hike following a
N1X victory at a mile and three-eighths at Aqueduct in his second U.S. start. The lightly raced colt has won four of seven; he ran his final
three furlongs last out in a quick :34.35. The knock is six runners he defeated ran back, none hit the board. 'CLEMENTE should handle this
distance based on his finishing kick at a furlong shorter. BALLADEER is likely to set the pace, he could get brave. He wired a G2 two
starts back while propelled by the bias; he was overmatched in the BC Turf last out. Come catch him. PLANETARIO, G1 winner in South
America and G3 winner in the U.S. at a mile and three-quarters, wants every bit of this mile and one-half trip.

Eighth Race
1. Fast Draw Munnings 2. Full Screen 3. Perfect Flight
FAST DRAW MUNNINGS can win this N2X dirt mile after scratching from a Calbred stakes last week won by The Chosen Vron. Both
recent starts by 'MUNNINGS were fast: highly rated N1X win two back, runner-up last out behind streaking Kings River Knight.
'MUNNINGS has tactical speed to press the pace, and enters as the best horse in the field and most probable winner on the card. New York
shipper FULL SCREEN arrives off a pair of fast in-the-money finishes at Aqueduct. He improved switching to dirt two starts back; the
front-runner might be the one they have to catch. PERFECT FLIGHT scored a highly rated win at this N2X level over this track in
summer, then was overmatched his next two starts. He returns to the DMR surface on which he won, entered for the optional $80k claim
tag. HEYWOODS BEACH is a multiple a graded stakes winner at marathon distances; one mile is shorter than he prefers but he will be
rolling late. He also is in for the optional claim tag. TAHOE SUNRISE adds speed, and will keep FULL SCREEN honest up front.

SONG OF SHADOWS could get the same trip in this Cal-bred N1X turf sprint she got winning a starter allowance turf sprint over this
five-furlong course in summer. That is, saving ground tucked right behind the speed. 'SHADOWS finished a creditable third last out going
six and a half on the SA hill; she drew the rail this time while shortening in distance. Cozy trip expected. QUEEN OF POMPEII is a deep
closer who missed by a neck and a nose both recent Cal-bred N1X turf starts at SA. The likelihood of a contested pace benefits her late
running style. DON'T JU FORGET dominated a dirt sprint last out, she also can run on turf. Front-runners include YO YO MAMA,
