    * TRIFECTA: 1/4/7 BOX, 1/7/8 BOX
COMMENTS: CARAVEL won 10 of 14 races at the distance and the last five in a row. NOBALS is an all or nothing horse at the distance scoring in three of five. THIN WHITE DUKE rides the hot rail and has finished in the money five of six at the distance. REMUDA won both of his turf races and can go long or short.
    RACE #7 $135,000 STAKES

    * TRIFECTA: 1/3/5 BOX, 1/5/8 BOX
COMMENTS: DAKOTA GOLD tends to make a bold mid move and should be fit in the third start after a layoff. PORTFOLIO COMPANY has two wins and a second in his trio of Saratoga grass goes. SPEAKING SCOUT tied for the highest last race speed figure and drops from a Grade III. DOCTOR DAVIS upped his speed number in the last two races and looks to be in good form.
    RACE #8 $500,000 STAKES
7 FURLONGS ON THE DIRT - POST TIME: 4:26 PM ET

    * TRIFECTA: 1/7/8 BOX, 1/4/7 BOX
COMMENTS: MAPLE LEAF MEL is undefeated in five including two at Saratoga. PRETTY MISCHIEVOUS has six wins with a second and third in eight races. MUNNYS GOLD won all three fresh runs off the bench like today. JERSEY PEARL was much better in his last outing according to big pops in his pave numbers.
    RACE #9 $600,000 STAKES

    ALTERNATE 2 8-1 8 Lion of War O Murphy
    * EXACTA: 6-5 BOX, 5-7 BOX, 7-2 BOX
    * TRIFECTA: 5/6/7 BOX, 2/5/7 BOX
COMMENTS: WEBSLINGER just needs a good start because he will be steam rolling late. FAR BRIDGE is a consistent performer who ran the highest last race speed figure. BATTLE OF NORMANDY could be a nice price for a horse with a win and second in a pair at the Spa. PROGRAM TRADING is unbeaten in two easy wins but this is a major step up in class.
    RACE #10 $1,000,000 STAKES

    * TRIFECTA: 1/2/6 BOX, 1/2/3 BOX
COMMENTS: CODYS WISH won eight of 10 on a fast track with a pair of thirds. ZANDON hit the board in five of five at the distance. CHARGE IT ran triple digit speed figures in five of his last six races. GIANT GAME won his last two and his early pace numbers just exploded higher in his most recent.

COMMENTS: LINGUISTIC is within a length from winning five of her last six races and could shock at a price. SOUPER MUNNINGS won her last with a career best effort in her first go around Ellis grass. BAY STORM ran in the money 13 of 15 of turf. QUARIA COMET ran the top last race speed figure and won two of three on turf.
        RACE #8 $200,000 STAKES

        * TRIFECTA: 1/7/10 BOX, 1/3/7 BOX
COMMENTS: WADSWORTH improved his early race internals last out and could be better in round two off the bench. ANGLOPHILE ran the highest last race speed figure in a strong effort on Ellis turf. HIGHWAY ROBBER won in his first try on turf and will try it again in the third start after a layoff. HIDDEN PATHs last race was better than it looks with quicker fractions despite going a little longer.
        RACE #9 $200,000 STAKES

        * TRIFECTA: 3/4/8 BOX, 3/7/8 BOX
COMMENTS: GRAYS FABLE ran better fractions with a final time that was a second shorter than the previous outing. BIG DREAMING has three wins and a second in four at the distance. GREYES CREEK can make huge mid moves and usually has some late energy too. FUERTEVENTURA won both of his 2023 starts and looks to be in good form

Saratoga Whitney FULLCARD Hotlist - August 5

            Aug. 04, 2023

By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt
            Hot List Key:
            A:
A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worst
            * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race [Md Sp Wt, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (4) Agate Road was a $650,000 yearling purchase who won the Frizette (G1) as a 2-year-old and has produced two winners from two starters. (5) Allied Attack attracted Irad to ride when there are horses in the field from both Todd Pletcher and Chad Brown, his top two clients. (2) Le Gris shows a turf workout a couple of weeks ago, so trainer Al Stall Jr. moves ahead with a grass debut. (6) Drilling for Gold has an extensive work tab in preparation for this first-time runner for Graham Motion.
2nd race [Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (11) Just Steel is first on the Also Eligible list but ran second behind the highly regarded debut winner Parade. D. Wayne Lukas often wins with second time starters so it could be in this guy’s third start. (1) Be You shows a fast workout last week for Todd Pletcher and is a son of Curlin out of a dam that sold for $2 million as a broodmare prospect in 2016. She was a stakes winner as a 2-year-old. (9) Creek is a Clailborne Farm home-bred for Bill Mott who won twice with debuting maidens yesterday and did so several times at the Belmont spring/summer meeting. (4) Locked is another firster for Pletcher. This one is by Gun Runner and sold for $425,000 as a 2-year-old.
3rd race [Clm 20000, 7F] – (6) Glory Road was claimed after a victory for $25,000 in May by Linda Rice and she brings him back after a short layoff in a winning spot. He has nine career wins and three of them were going seven furlongs. (8) Victorious Wave has five top three finishes in a row with two victories including one in a starter allowance at Aqueduct. (5) No More Talk is a past winner at the $25,000 level at Belmont Park and was claimed for $16,000 last time at Saratoga. (3) Beachwalker won twice at Parx Racing in May and then moved way up in class and finished fourth.
4th race [NY, Alw 95000, 1 mi TURF] – (9) Ortus broke his maiden in his second start which was at Belmont in May and then moved up top this first-level allowance condition where he was third and then second. (2) Sonic Speed was a winner in a $35,000 claimer against open company and then was third in a starter allowance at Delaware Park. Irad Ortiz gets the mount. (10) Whistler’s Honor was second in his first start after a year layoff when he rallied from the back of the field. (4) Sell Something had bad trips in his last two starts but before that had a third after setting the pace and a win in a starter allowance.
5th race [NY, Alw 95000, 7F] – (1) Quick to Accuse broke his maiden by almost 10 lengths and then ran second in a NY-bred stakes race before trying the Remsen (G2) in December. (6) Thank You Jon was an open length winner of his third start in a maiden at Belmont in July earning a race high speed figure. (7) Be the Boss won a starter allowance three races back and then tried turf sprints in his last two starts. (5) Safalow’s Mission finished in the top three in 5 out of his last 7 races at this state-bred allowance level.
            6th race [Troy (G3), 5

Del Mar Hotlist - August 5

              Aug. 03, 2023

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
              Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
              * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (3) Mission Beach is a firster from Baffert whose strong gate works indicate he’s primed for a big effort. (5) Ocala Kid gets Smith for his debut and merits attention. (7) Dagger Ranch is another firster from Baffert who deserve a close look. (6) Stay Hot could be a factor here. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5. Exactas: 3-5 over 6-7 and 6-7 over 3-5.
3rd race – (5) Betty’s Song looks set for a solid effort in her debut. (1) Jensco may welcome a switch to dirt. (2) Anacaro is training nicely for her 2023 debut. (3) Lisa’s Nonno appears to have sharp speed. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5. Exactas: 1-5 over 2-3 and 2-3 over 1-5.
5th race – (6) Maxville (B) got off to a rough start and closed fast to grab fourth. Can make amends here. (4) Johnny Paycheck disappointed last time during a tough trip but can rebound here. (8) Infiniteexperience lacked room last time and may be more of a factor today. (3) Defensor Fortis seems due for better luck here. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-6-8.
10th race – (2) Fun to Dream could work out a great trip just off stablemate Adare Manor and catch the speedster in the final yards. (3) Adare Manor is very much the one to catch and beat. (4) Kirstenbosch has enough of a late kick to be a factor in a small field. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-4. Doubles: 2-3-4 with 1-5-7-8.
11th race – (7) Irish Patsy had a troubled trip last time and will appreciate the added distance. (8) Precious Baby should welcome a switch back to turf. (5) De Joria is worth a look off the Hess claim. (1) Norah’s Princess will benefit from a rail trip. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5-7-8.
No. Letter/Last race Today’s race Comment
              (6) Maxville B, 7/28 5 DMR Was hurt by a rocky start

Keeneland Select Pick of the Day | August 5, 2023

                Aug. 03, 2023

Race 9 at Ellis Park | Saturday August 5 | Post Time 5:07 PM Eastern
Kentucky Downs Preview Mint Millions Turf Mile | Purse $200,000 | One Mile on Turf | Three Year Olds and Upward
                Main Contenders:

A full field of 12 lines up (hopefully) for this race where there should be no strong favorite. Trainer Mike Maker, who it seems wins more than his share of stakes race on turf in Kentucky, saddles a pair in the form of Heaven Street (5) and Max K.O. (12) and both have strong chances. Given they open at odds of 10 to 1 and 5 to 1, respectively, we may not have to pick between them because we can adjust our win wagers to bet both and get the same profit if those odds hold up.
Heaven Street (5) ships in from New York and it appears the four year old colt was a private purchase since his last start as he raced for different owners and a different trainer when winning at seven furlongs at Belmont on July 4. That was a classified allowance level race so not much different than this non-graded stakes, and better still Heaven Street won a stakes race previously, the Columbia Stakes, at this mile trip in in March of last year. His last three races have all been strong efforts and there is every reason to suspect, as a four year old, he could run as well or better than he did last month. BEST OF ALL given his last win was earned leading from start to finish, and with NONE of the other four horses drawn inside of him in the gate having ever demonstrated a desire to lead from the start, jockey Torres can put Heaven Street on the lead for a repeat of his wire-to-wire win last month.
Max K.O. (12) may not be disadvantaged by his outside post, as he closed from sixth of seven one before last to win the Mr. Steele Stakes in Florida in May. He also closed from fifth to win two before that in February, at this mile turf trip. Changing barns to Maker before his last start, in a stakes in Minnesota, Max K.O. was a lot closer up in the early stages when second for the first half-mile, before moving up to lead and holding that lead into the stretch before tiring to fifth. Just the same he was beaten a grand total of a length at the end. Now getting one of Maker’s GO TO riders in Corrales and with his stablemate Heaven Street complimenting his late running style, a repeat of the effort Max K.O. put forth one race before last could be good enough for him to earn his 13th career win.
Two horses open at lower odds so are not considered for win bets but should be used on exacta tickets. They are Fuerteventura (7) and Gray’s Fable (4). Fuerteventura won the stakes in Minnesota in June in which Max K.O. was fifth, jockey Geroux up for the first time and riding back in this race. He had also won one month earlier, and that followed seven months off, so there is potential to run another “A” race good enough to win. However, he was sent to post as the 4 to 5 favorite in that race and may be similarly bet heavily in this situation. The 104 Equibase Speed Figure earned in victory last time out is identical to Heaven Street’s last figure, and to the figure Max K.O. earned winning the Mr. Steele Stakes, which are more reasons to prefer those two at higher odds though Fuerteventura is certainly a contender. Gray’s Fable won this race last year when it was the Evan Williams Turf Mile, getting up by a neck on the wire at 10 to 1 odds. He had run sixth prior to that and this year enters the race in better form off a runner-up effort with a field high 114 last race Equibase Speed Figure. Still, with two wins and two runner-up finishes in his last 11 races dating back to the start of 2022, it appears when he’s not in the mood to run a big race he doesn’t run well at all, and opening at 3 to 1 he’s another I’ll use in exactas but eschew for win bets.
                Bets:
Win: Heaven Street (5) and Max K.O. (12) can be bet to win at odds of 3 to 1 or more
                Exactas: Heaven Street (5) and Max K.O. (12) over Heaven Street (5), Max K.O. (12), Fuerteventura (7) and Gray’s Fable (4)
                Heaven Street (5), Max K.O. (12), Fuerteventura (7) and Gray’s Fable (4) over Heaven Street (5) and Max K.O. (12)

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Mission Beach; 7-Dagger Ranch
                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Mission Beach, a $400,000 yearling purchase by Curlin, makes his debut for Bob Baffert following a series of fast recent gate drills designed to have him cranked and ready first crack out of the box. He’s been impressive in each of his gate drills and looks very much like a win early type. His stablemate, Dagger Ranch, another first timer by Curlin, also has displayed plenty of ability and from his cozy outside draw should have every chance to make a favorable early impression. His dam, Indian Blessing, was a rocket ship back in the day. These are the two we’ll be including in our rolling exotic play in a race that we’ll otherwise not get terribly involved in.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 5-Rakassah
                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Rakassah doesn’t have a whole lot to beat in this claiming turf sprint for fillies and mares, though this huge class drop from $80,000 down to $32,000 off a strong third place performance in a downhill dash at Santa Anita is a cause for concern. The Phil D’Amato-trained mare has finished first or second in eight of 16 career starts and has several back speed figures that are better than par for the level, so if she can deliver one of her better efforts – or simply repeat her last outing from almost four months ago – she figures to pose for pictures. It’s all a matter of health and current condition.

                  *

Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Colette’s Joy; 5-Betty’s Song
                  Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Colette’s Joy outran her work tab in her debut at 12-1 when finishing an excellent second in a similar maiden dash for older fillies and mares in early June at Santa Anita. She didn’t get the best of runs but kept to her task in the lane to make it close in a game performance. She returns two months later with a healthy series of recent breezes, so a forward move is quite likely, especially from her comfortable outside draw. The Mark Glatt barn hits at a strong 21% with second timers, so this daughter of Connect seems pretty solid at 2-1 on the morning line. The Bob Baffert-trained first timer Betty’s Song has looked decent in the a.m. and should be competitive in a moderate affair. A couple of recent gate drills over the local main track were accomplished without undue pressure, so at 5/2 on the morning line you have to include her.

                  *

                  RACE 4: Post: 3:40 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Justique
                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: 8-Doinitthehardway.

Forecast: Justique is perfect two-for-two over the Del Mar main track and will add Lasix for the first time, so we’re expecting the still-promising daughter of Justify to deliver her best punch in this second level allowance optional claiming miler for fillies and mares. She has looked very sharp in recent drills, so we’re expecting a huge run in her first outing in five months. The form says she’s most effective around one turn and perhaps that’s true. Today we’ll find out for sure.

                  *

                  RACE 5: Post: 4:11 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Chrome to Riches
                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Maxville.

Forecast: This maiden state-bred turf miler brings together some familiar faces, none of whom have distinguished themselves in any way, shape, or form. Somebody will win, that’s the only conviction we have. Chrome to Riches has raced just twice, so perhaps he has the most room to improve. The Carla Gaines-trained colt finished a fair fourth against this group in his most recent outing in March, but a series of sharp recent workouts indicates he could easily be a better type this time around. At 5-1 on the morning line from his good inside draw, the son of California Chrome seems as good as any and better than most.

                  *

                  RACE 6: Post: 4:41 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Mimsy; 10-Pretty Rena
                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: 8-La Paloma Blanca.

Forecast: Mimsy certainly isn’t any world beater, but she has some amount of ability, at least enough to be competitive in a bottom-rung maiden claiming sprint for fillies and mares such as this. The Mark Glatt barn has good stats with first time starters, most of which run better than they work, so given the modest competition she will be facing the daughter of Strong Mandate is worth a look at 8-1 on the morning line. Pretty Rena is comfortably drawn outside, has plenty of early speed, and could be tough to catch if she can clear her rivals during the early stages of the abbreviated sprint trip. We haven’t seen her since early June, when she finished second with a career top speed figure, but her recent work pattern looks fairly strong and healthy.

                  *

                  RACE 7: Post: 5:11 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 9-My Man Bags; 3-Sawasdee
                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: 5-I’m Dr. O; 10-Rachel’s Coach.

Forecast: On pure form, My Man Bags is simply better than these. He’s won three of his last four starts, most recently with a career top speed figure, and with almost two months to recover from what had to be hard, taxing effort the son of Daredevil returns to face the same first level allowance state-bred types that he just outrun over the Santa Anita main track. This time, though, he has to do it on grass, a surface that he tried a couple of years ago on two occasions without success. Clearly, he’s a better type now, so we’re hoping the surface switch won’t matter. Sawasdee is actually quicker than ‘Bags (who can stalk and pounce if asked to) and will take them as far as he can in this five furlong dash. He’s another that is questionable on the lawn but may be much better now than when he tried it last year. If he can shake loose early he could prove troublesome at 5-1 on the morning line.

                  *

                  RACE 8: Post: 5:41 PT Grade: C
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Keen to Go; 5-Circle the Moon; 1-Carpe Bellum
                  Backups/Savers/Underneath: 10-Got Thunder.

Forecast: This is a treacherous (nw-2) $16,000 claimer with the main contenders dropping drastically in class while clearly being culled from their stable. There is simply nothing to trust, so if you’re inclined to play, tread lightly. Keen to Go has numbers that are more good enough to win, and with the huge drop from starter ($50,000) allowance the Jeff Mullins-trained son of Keen Ice is a contender by default. He’ll be doing his best work late. Circle the Moon just broke his maiden at Los Alamitos in gate to wire fashion, and while he beat little at least he is in some semblance of decent form. With just three prior outings, the son of Malibu Moon also has room to improve that most of the others don’t. He gets a break in the weights with the switch to bug boy Aguilar, and in a field without much speed he’ll probably try gate to wire tactics again. Carpe Bellum is competitive on numbers after breaking his maiden at the bottom over seven furlongs at Los Alamitos last month. His low percentage connections notwithstanding, the 4-year-old gelding probably is worth tossing in somewhere.

                  *

                  RACE 9: Post: 6:11 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): King’s River Knight; 8-Bally’s Charm; 5-Carmelita’s Man
                  Backups/Savers/Underneath:

Forecast: Kings River Knight is perfect at Del Mar (two-for-two) and is a nose away from winning three straight since joining the John Sadler barn, so the son of Acclamation is a logical top pick and morning line favorite (9/5) in this year’s renewal of the California Dreamin’ Stakes for older state-bred turf specialists. The only concern is that he’s most effective on the lead and may have to deal with committed front runner Jimmy Blue Jeans, who is drawn right alongside. If the two get into a pace duel, Bally’s Charm will have an excellent chance to inherit a stalking position and then have every chance from there (he’s won that way in the past, though he prefers the front end). This is a tactical race that may be decided by trips and early fractions, and it actually could set up nicely for course specialist Carmelita’s Man, who has won three times over the local lawn and is most effective when held up early and produced late. Given the possible pace scenario, he is quite dangerous at 4-1 on the morning line.

                  *

                  RACE 10: Post: 6:41 PT Grade: X
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Adare Manor
                  Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Adare Manor is most effective as the controlling speed, but she won’t have that role today, not with sprinter-stretching-out Elm Drive drawing the rail and almost certainly employing gate-to-wire strategy. ‘Manor can stalk and pounce if necessary and in her present form the daughter of Uncle Mo shouldn’t be compromised by the projected trip. She continues to sizzle in the morning while looking better than ever, but if there is a concern, and a minor one at that, it’s that she finished off the board in her only prior start over the Del Mar main track at odds of 3/5 during her juvenile campaign. She’s a logical rolling exotic single but will offer no wagering value at the odds-on price that she is sure to leave at.

                  *

                  RACE 11: Post: 7:11 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 2-In Your Face
                  Backups/savers: 2-Precocious Times; 9-Picture of a Lady

Forecast: In Your Face earned a huge number when graduating over this course and distance almost a year ago but then disappeared. She returns protected in a sign of confidence in this starter’s allowance turf miler and has trained like she’s fit and ready to pick up where she left off. The Peter Eurton-trained daughter of Violence is assured a good stalking trip from her favorable inside draw, retains “win rider” Drayden Van Dyke, and offers excellent wagering value at or near her morning line of 6-1. Let’s make her a win play and main punch in rolling exotic play.

                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: The first race has been handicapped for turf. If it is switched to the main track, we’ll pass. Innate displayed ability when second in a maiden race in Ireland – he earned a reasonable 63 Timeform Rating - and makes his U.S. debut in today’s opener. The concern is that trainer Joseph O’Brien hasn’t done much at all in the past couple of seasons with these European shippers. Allied Attack may be the best of the locals. The Omaha Beach colt has done some good work leading up to his debut for Michael Maker (modest stats with first timers) and may be able to run some. With Irad Ortiz, Jr., taking the call, he is sure to receive plenty of play.

                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Be You was best of a team in a fairly nice gate work July 29 - View Workout - and looks like a live item for Todd Pletcher in this maiden juvenile dash over six furlongs. He broke quickly in the aforementioned breeze (4f, :47 flat, fastest of 101) and was mostly in hand throughout. He’ll need to do the same today from his rail post position. Domestic Product displayed plenty of power in team drill July 13 - View Workout - and looks very much like a colt with strength and talent, although we’re not sure how much early zip he’ll display in his debut. He’s a decent sort of a prospect, at least, so we’ll include the son of Practical Joke on our ticket.

                    Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Victorious Wave has finished first or second in seven of 11 career starts, and after stealing a purse at Finger Lakes in his first start off a layoff in June the son of Stormy Atlantic returns to the Big Circuit while dropping a notch below his claim value in this $20,000 extended sprint for older horses. A perfect two-for-two at this seven furlong trip, the Chris Englehart-trained gelding is solid on numbers and should enjoy an ideal pace stalking journey. He’s 2-1 on the morning line and should have no excuses.

                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Be of Courage.

Forecast: This race has been handicapped for turf. If the race is switched to the main track, we’ll pass. Ortus closed well but too late to wind up second when finding six furlongs a bit too sharp at this level last month at Belmont Park. The Christophe Clement-trained gelding stretches out to what we believe is his preferred distance today, so he should be able to produce a winning late kick. Sonic Speed earned a career top speed figure when third in a starter’s allowance two-turn grass affair over soft footing three weeks ago and not much more will be needed to make him a major player once again. The barn has been hot this meeting and the switch to Irad Ortiz, Jr., is a positive factor.

                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 3-Two for Charging.

Forecast: Be the Boss is a hard-knocking veteran sprinter with a prior win over this track and recent numbers that are more than good enough for the level. He’s also a seven furlong specialist – two wins and one second in three starts – so it all adds up to a top effort in this state-bred first level allowance affair for trainer Michael Maker. This switch from grass to the main track will favor him, as well. Asymmetric is lightly raced with room to improve, and with just a slight forward move the Chad Brown-trained gelding will be right there. He’s a not a quick type but will enjoy this seven furlong trip that will allow him to be within striking range without being ridden hard during the early stages.

                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: We’re going to assume that the Troy Stakes-G3 will remain on turf. If not, we’ll pass. Caravel has won her last five races and will be odds-on to extend her streak. She’s slumming at the Grade-3 level but trainer Brad Cox apparently thinks he needs a race to tick her over for the fall. There’s no play for us in this race.

                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none

Forecast: We’ll handicap this year’s edition of the Lure Stakes for grass only. Dakota Gold is eligible to this restricted stakes race because his added money wins all have been earned when facing state-bred company. Based on his speed figures, the son of Freud should be more than capable of stepping out of his comfort zone to handle opening company. He has displayed good form over the Saratoga lawn and has the ideal second flight, stalking style that can be effective no matter what the pace flow is. Portfolio Company is a progressive gelding with rising numbers, a good inside draw, and proven winning form over the local lawn. He’s guaranteed a ground-saving trip from the rail and is the one to fear most.

Forecast: Dorth Vader just missed in a photo in the Acorn S.-1 to Pretty Mischievous and could have won with a better trip. She was bottled in and stymied in traffic along the rail to the head of the lane, got clear, responded bravely, and then fought hard to the wire but couldn’t quite match strides with ‘Mischievous, who had clear sailing outside throughout. ‘Mischievous is buried on the fence today while ‘Vader has the opportunity to inherit an ideal stalking position behind the projected blazing pacesetters Maple Leaf Mel and Munnys Gold, who appear destined to hook up early and go toe-to-toe throughout. ‘Meanwhile, Vader can pounce and accelerate when given her cue. At 6-1 on the morning line, she’s the gamble.

                    RACE 9: Post: 5:01 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Program Trading; 5-Far Bridge
                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Program Trading is unbeaten in two starts and today moves into Grade-1 competition in this year’s edition of the Saratoga Derby Invitational. It’s rather significant class jump but this English-bred gelding could be up to the task. He has plenty of tactical speed – it wouldn’t shock us if he finds himself on the front end – and based on the projected pace flow the Chad Brown-trained sophomore should be just where he needs to be when the pressure is turned on entering the lane. On pure numbers, he’s right there with these and with any kind of forward move could extend his winning streak to three. Far Bridge already has a Grade-1 win on his resume (Belmont Derby) and is the likely choice and one to beat. He can turn it on late, and with any kind of help up front and clear sailing through the lane the Todd Pletcher-trained son of English Channel will be difficult to contain.

                    RACE 10: Post: 5:42 ET Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Cody’s Wish
                    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: The only question in this year’s Whitney S.-G1 is whether Cody’s Wish will be as effective over nine furlongs as he is around one turn. He’ll have to prove it. Even his two-turn Breeders’ Cup Mile win, which was race-shape aided, left some doubt, as the son of Curlin was fully extended to edge the 3-year-old Cyberknife by a head. Listed at 50 cents son the dollar on the morning line, the Bill Mott-trained 5-year-old will be far too short to play, but as the winner of nine of his last 10 starts we suspect he’ll find a way to get there first again. We’ll be rooting for him.

                    RACE 11: Post: 6:16 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 7-Everso Mischievous; 10-Caramel Chip
                    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Everso Mischievous missed by a head at odds-on in a similar allowance event at Ellis Park in late June but earned a very strong speed figure and was six lengths clear of the rest while running a winning race in defeat. A recent bullet half mile breeze on the training track (:47.4b, fastest of 53) is a good sign that’s he’s fit and ready, and with the addition of blinkers we’re expecting the son of Into Mischief to regain his winning edge. Caramel Chip lands the cozy outside post, has numbers that fit, and is a tough and durable veteran who won’t back down from a fight. He’s the one to fear most.

                    RACE 12: Post: 6:48 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 12-Beuys; 10-Al’s Rocket; 4-My Sea Cottage
                    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: This race has been handicapped for grass. If it is switched to the main track, we’ll pass. Beuys is poorly drawn outside but seems better than his winter Gulfstream Park races show. He’s now in the Brendan Walsh barn, has a solid and steady recent work pattern, and has races overseas that make him a strong fit at this level. Al’s Rocket can be dangerous from off the pace with his best effort, though his lack of tactical speed always makes his task tougher than it should be. With some help up front, he could be heard from in the closing stages. My Sea Cottage does his best work on the front end and projects to be the controlling speed. If not pressured early, he could get brave late.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands-Hambo Middle Pick 4 Analysis

                      August 5, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
There is a Noon Eastern first post for Hambletonian Day at the Meadowlands. It's a loaded 16-race card featuring Grand Circuit action including the Hambletonian Oaks for three-year-old trotting fillies, and the 98th running of the Hambletonian for 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings.

The middle 0.50 Pick 4 starts in Race 9. The sequence has a $100,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                      Race 9 (3:12 PM EST)

5-Lexus Kody (3-1)-This Ron Burke trainee is in sharp form and has won 5 of 8 at M1. Yannick Gingras should be out and rolling when the wings fold and could be tough to catch.
8-Looks Like Moni (4-1)-Driver Scott Zeron will hope the fractions are sizzling and if so chances for the top prize go up. Zeron may need to work up a sub-27 last quarter and that can happen. Could win if close enough to the top turning for the wire.

                      Race 10-Hambletonian Oaks-$500,000 Purse (3:38 PM EST)

3-Bond (9/2)-This filly has burned some cash in the last 2 starts but both efforts were not awful. Set some hellacious fractions (25.4-53.4) last week and that took its toll. There is a big purse on the line but will still rely on a less taxing opening half mile today.
4-Righteous Resolve (8-1)-The Matt Bax trainee got the pocket behind the one above leaving from the 8-hole. This is a value play, she has won 9 of 13 lifetime and might be better in the 2nd start at M1.
5-Railee Something (7/2)-This Burke pupil has 5 wins and 3 second place finishes in 8 starts this year. Should be forwardly placed once again and can be there at the wire.

                      Race 11 (4:12 PM EST)

6-Southwind Tyrion (8-1)-Comes off a strong performance drawing off by 7 lengths and now faces a saltier group. Looks like a price shot who may have not shown its best stuff. Draws well plus comes out of a sharp outfit, Ake Svanstedt trains and drives.
8-Venerat (5/2)-This veteran Marcus Melander pupil has the gate speed to get a decent seat. This is only the 3rd start of the year but qualified well on 7-22 and should be ready for a big try.
9-It's Academic (3-1)-David Miller needs to get decent position off the gate and this son of Uncle Peter knows how to get the job done despite the post draw. Has hit the board in all 8 starts this year and has posted 5 wins. Usually excels at M1 (24-10-2-5-) and could take its 4th straight picture with a smooth trip.

Race 12-Hambletonian-$1,000,000 Purse (4:45 PM EST)

3-Osceola (12-1)-Not sure if this guy will be over bet, the public likes horses that close out of the clouds. But my thinking is the price will be right to use and that isn't a concern. What could be an issue is staying flat having broken stride in 7 of 16 starts. This time Doug McNair most likely won't be taking back off the gate and then must thread his way through multiple horses down the lane. Will look for a solid trip by a more than capable driver and will hope for a flat mile. This is one of a few that could win at a juicy price.
4-Winner's Bet (4-1)-There are reasons to look away from Dexter Dunn's choice. This colt normally races on Lasix, and this will be the 2nd start without it. The Walner colt comes off a taxing trip last week, was parked the mile from post 10. That said, it was an impressive effort and that was only his 3rd race this year. The Cecere stable is posting 62% winners over the last 30 days and Dunn can get the most out of this colt. Should be forwardly placed throughout and would rather use then let him beat me.
5-Point Of Perfect (6-1)-This is the Burke stable 1-a entry, doesn't get a lot of respect but has done nothing wrong in 4 straight starts. Won last week, set some hot fractions on the engine and was game down the lane. David Miller is a master at keeping a horse in play and should be racing near the top of the stack with a choice post draw. Could offer a solid price and it wouldn't be the first time a barns #2 wins a big race.
8-French Wine (12-1)-My guess is the Team Miller pupil goes off at a higher price than 12-1 and is on an upswing. The post makes the task tougher, but this colt can win without having an early lead. There might be a hectic start and if Andy Miller provides a sharp steer the son of Bar Hopping could surprise. If close to the leaders at the top of the lane, this colt could put in a sub-.27 last quarter.

                            FanDuel Horse Racing - Race #1 - Post: 7:30pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $9,000 Class Rating: 59

                            Rating:

                            #3 ABBMAR (ML=7/2)

ABBMAR - Bailon and Wainwright teamed up together are a handicapper's friend. The most dangerous animal in racing is the lone speed horse. If they let her get away early they probably won't catch her. For my money, a bullet workout is the best indicator of readiness there is. Look at that last one - 35.0. Very impressive. The improved speed ratings over the last 3 races is strong. Wainwright drops her in this event ready to win. The 56 last race figure looks sound on paper.

                            Vulnerable Contenders: #4 MINI DRESS (ML=1/1), #1 MISS DUTTON (ML=3/1), #2 JAMAICAN TRAFFIC (ML=4/1),

MINI DRESS - This chalk horse hasn't been to the track in awhile. No morning drills since last race. A sustainer like this one needs a speed duel to set things up and she isn't likely to get one this time out. MISS DUTTON - Pace makes the race and the shortage of speed means this come from behinder will have to rally without any help. JAMAICAN TRAFFIC - This animal likes to be on the board, but doesn't usually win. Forget the top spot. Never really did much at all in the last race on July 6th. Hard to wager on in today's race. Won't be easy for this horse to beat this field off of that last speed rating. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class figure, so put her on the likely underlays list.

I lean toward CREATING MEMORIES here. Has run admirably when travelling a dirt sprint race. Reason to like this filly as she has in the irons one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. Ran a strong last race. GYPSY ROSIE - She looks quite good in this slot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the halfway point. Must be given consideration for this race if only for the formidable speed fig garnered in the last outing. CHASING DIVINITY - Lately Parsons has provided gamblers with a competitive winning percentage with horses travelling in dirt sprint races.
