Laurel Late Pick 4 Analysis: Friday, February 24, 2023

Here's how I will approach Friday's late pick 4 at Laurel Park, which includes a trio of allowance races. The 1-turn miles and second finish line will be employed in 3 of these heats.

5th Race LRL (2:25 EST): DOPPELGANGER, anxious and in-hand until late backstretch, reeled in loose leader Nostalgic Run – a next-out allowance winner – and powered clear in the final sixteenth. He should prove a handful in his second start off a six-month layoff for Team Russell.

6th Race LRL (2:56 EST): The second division of a split, one-mile allowance race appears wide open. Take the three runners entering new, high-percentage barns. CLASSIER, a Grade III winner in California when trained by Bob Baffert, worked a 4F bullet at Laurel Park for his new connections after making the cross-country journey. MR HUSTLE rallied for second at 6F behind speedball Al Loves Josie (5-17, $238k), now stretches out off the Ness claim. Trainer Norm Cash is winless from his last 14 claims, 12 at single digit odds. But don’t be fooled. Cash can get a horse ready and DIXIE DRAWL could enhance his 5-for-11 record at the distance.

7th Race LRL (3:27 EST): Something has to give in this speed-laden field. CHEETARA, a multiple stakes-winning sprinter, rallied to win a 6F allowance off a similar-type layoff to launch a $115k 6-year-old season. SHESALITTLE EDGY returned from a 10-month layoff at Aqueduct, dueled and held second behind Rossa Veloce (8-24, $421k). RESPONSE TIME, first or second in her last five allowance sprints at Laurel Park, caught a very game PRINCESS KOKACHIN at this distance.

8th Race LRL (3:58 EST): RED WINE TIME seeks a re-run of her race for $25,000 two back, when she broke from post 10, hesitated, swung 6-wide and floated out in mid-stretch when second to the 42-1 winner. GWYNEDD exited a triple key race, then ran second to Dotada, who repeated in a starter allowance in her next start. PERFORMANCEANXIETY and THE HAUNTED ROOM were runaway maiden winners at one mile recently and round out the Pick 4 ticket.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis

The feature at Cal Expo goes in Race 6 when 2-year-old colts and geldings compete for a $20,000 purse in California Sires Stakes action. The 0.20 Pick 4 begins in Race 7. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 7

1-Delightfully Wild (8-1)-This veteran mare drops in search of its 1st win of the year (0-5) but has won 19% of CalX starts (19-99). Gets the services of James Kennedy who picked over the 2/7. This is a soft spot and comes right back in 5 days, so best to respect at a square price.
5-Uniquerock (5-1)-Another who drops to the lowest level this meet but loses Svendsen to the Plested entry #4. Can pass foes down the lane and this race could set up for a closer. There is some gate speed inside, the fractions should be lively and that could help this 5-year-old.
6-Prom Queen (5/2)-Similar profile to the one above excepts wins more often, (8-35) in 2022 and has posted 12 wins in 51 CalX starts. This is another who will benefit from a quick pace and hopefully won't be over bet.

Race 8

6-Swan Country (5/2)--There isn't much form to be found in this leg. This Trembly pupil has a good pilot in Thayer and has been cashing checks versus Open company, but is 0-7 at CalX.
7-Adagio De La Tour (7/2)-This 13-year-old makes his 5th start since November and this time comes back within a week. Was facing Open company without any success but maybe now the kinks have been worked out . Posted a 153.1 mark at Lexington in 2022, and had 7 wins in 34 starts. Banked over $50k last season and might have met a beatable field.

Race 9

4-Heads Up Boys (8-1)-Faces easier here, gets a new set of hands in Plano and drops to the level of its last win on 1-22. Needs a trip but should be in striking range turning for the wire versus this bunch.
6-Capitol Hill (10-1)-Price shot hasn't taken a picture in 5 tries this year but also faces somewhat easier. Svendsen could have this veteran racing close to the leaders and be in the hunt at the wire.

Race 10

3-Outlawnothnbutsmrt (12-1)-Dropped to this level in last, raced better and can improve again with a good trip. This post draw should help Goulet work a more efficient trip.
5-Bombay Hanover (2-1)-This mare has been facing better but is camera shy and some might fade. Slow starts can be an issue but Plano comes back, and at this level he should provide a more aggressive steer. Using and won't offer any value but versus this kind is difficult to leave off the ticket.
6-West Coach Beast (9/2)-Should be in the mix and would expect Thayer to be on the point or in the pocket around the 1st turn. This 10-time winner in 2022 hit the board in 3 of 6 at CalX and has posted 1 win. This is another drop and pop candidate.

#3 Calicoco Tracking type might get an honest enough pace to kick at in this one, and he was a good fit with similar last time out after dropping out of a string of stakes tries.
#2 Copter He was sharp in the debut win at Delta earlier this month, and he lures Geroux to the saddle for this local try. Seems like an obvious player if he transfers that form.
#4 Clear as a Bele He loses the win rider from the debut to another logical player in #7 Lordy Lordy, but he overcame a trip that isn't always easy -- slow start with a quick rush into the pace. Interesting.
Race Summary Calicoco landed a few underneath shares in stakes company before rallying well for second at this level last out, and I think he might get an okay setup with a couple potential pace players to battle early.

Fair Grounds - Race #7

#4 Single Shot He was better when back on the turf last time out, and now he'll make the third start of his winter campaign in a race where he should be able to control the tempo. He seems capable if they let him relax early.
#8 Oneforvivi He has proven to be a pretty reliable finisher, and he turned in a good effort with similar off the layoff last time out. Wouldn't be any surprise second off the bench.
#3 Perrins He's another going second off the break here after tiring in deep stretch off the bench last out, but I worry he's going to be a bit overbet in here.
Race Summary Single Shot needs to bring another step forward off that last one, but I think he's in line for a nice trip up top. Would be happy at anything like the 8/1 ML price.

Fair Grounds - Race #8

#9 Duxonthepond She found a good level when dropped in last time out to score, and I think she'll get a decent run of things from out here, spying a few potential forward players from the high draw.
#7 Bet on Bourbon Forward player can lead or press, and she's a three-time winner facing mostly horses in search of their second lifetime win, as those cheaper Louisiana-bred races don't count against her here. Wouldn't argue with anyone landing here -- her statebred form seems competitive.
#5 Jazla She's a fairly consistent type, and she finally graduated last out when finding the front on the drop in for $12,500. This is a really reasonable spot for her to come back in, and something similar would make her tough.
Race Summary Duxonthepond might off a playable enough price after a solid effort last out, and she may still have a bit of upside in this third start off the layoff.
