Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Friday, January 20
Posted on January 19, 2023 by David Aragona

    RACE 3: PRAIRIE FIRE (#2)

Perhaps the drop in class will wake up Chloe Rose (#4), who figures to vie for favoritism in this spot. Yet I have trouble taking a short price on a runner who has been in such dubious form. I thought she was a little interesting dropping back in for a tag last time and she failed to finish off that race after contesting the pace. This is a weaker field, but it feels like she’s just not the same horse that we saw in the first half of last year. Greatest Love (#1) has a right to improve second off the layoff for Charlton Baker. She ran a decent race last time out when running for the claiming waiver in a cheaper spot. If she could get back to the form that we saw out of her when she was previously in Baker’s barn last June, she would be tough for this field to handle. Yet obviously plenty of time has passed since then. The horse that I prefer out of that Jan. 5 race is Prairie Fire (#2). She probably should have won that day, as she got shuffled back soon after the start when Jose Lezcano was unsuccessful in attempting to hold his rail position. She still came with a strong rally to just miss in an effort that was better than the speed figure indicates. She got claimed by a low-profile barn out of that race, but didn’t run that badly first off the claim last time. Though she was only competing for a $16k tag, that was a much tougher spot than this, as winner Melting Snow earned a big speed figure for the level. We also saw runner-up Vegas Weekend return with a much improved effort in her next start out of that race. This mare is better form than it appears, and the price should be fair.

    RACE 4: BIG VENEZUELA (#5)

I don’t have a major problem with likely favorite Doctor Love (#3), who looks like the horse to beat. He ran pretty well first off the claim for Tom Morley, attacking a pace that came apart while only beaten by a couple of late runners. The slight turnback in distance figures to suit him, and Tom Morley is a strong 18 for 76 (24%, $2.25 ROI) second off the claim over the past 5 years. The one issue with this horse is that his form is exposed at this point, so you’re not going to get the kind of prices that he’s been in his recent starts. I prefer him to the other likely short price, One Whirlwind Ride (#2). This gelding did improve slightly off the claim for Rob Atras, but he’s moving up in class and needs to do a bit better to beat this field. He’s never been the most reliable win candidate and there appears to be other speed in the field for him to deal with. My top pick is Big Venezuela (#5). He comes off a poor effort at this level, but I don’t want to be too hard on him for that loss going 9 furlongs. The distance is probably too far for him, and he was also setting a pace that came apart. I thought he ran pretty well in his prior start at this level going a mile. He carved out some legitimate fractions that day and just got a bit tired in the late stages, though still earned a strong 104 TimeformUS Speed Figure. He hasn’t sprinted much in his career, but I like this slight turnback for him and he’s drawn well outside of his main pace rivals. He also figures to be a fair price for an underrated trainer and jockey.

    RACE 7: SENIOR INVESTMENT (#5)

This 9-furlong optional claimer seems totally wide open, as none of the 6 runners stands on particularly solid ground. I suppose the ‘now’ horse is Little Demon (#4) as he returns just 6 days after a career-best performance here last Saturday. This guy was competing in cheap claiming races last summer, but he’s turned into a different horse since getting purchased by David Jacobson. For what it’s worth, Jacobson is 6 for 21 (29%, $1.96 ROI) off 4 to 8 day layoffs on dirt over 5 years, and he’s 3 for 6 (50%, $4.08 ROI) with last-out winners in that sample. This field might not be too much tougher than the one he defeated last week, but he does have to stretch out. Locally Owned (#3) is perhaps one of the more trustworthy options given his positive experience at the distance. He got a confidence boost when dropped into some cheaper races late last year, and it seemed to work, as he’s generally been back in decent form lately. He almost got he job done going this distance last time but couldn’t quite reel in the hardy 10-year-old Rough Sea. This is a step up in class, but it’s not the strongest field for the level. Be Better (#6) is a total wild card as he tries to get back on track after a series of poor efforts. Perhaps getting back on Lasix will prove key for a horse who used that anti-bleeder medication in both victories last summer at Monmouth. Yet I’m not sure it’s quite that simple, so I would still need a pretty generous price to give him another chance. No Burn (#1) could play out as the controlling speed if he gets out of the gate, but that’s been an issue in his last couple of starts. He’s another who hasn’t been in the best form recently. In such a wide open race, I try to look for value and I think Senior Investment (#5) could offer the best opportunity as likely the biggest price in the field. While it’s a negative that he’s lost 13 races in a row, he’s nevertheless shown up with solid efforts in most of his recent starts. He ran well behind the promising Unbridled Bomber in November, which was the last time that he made use of his tactical speed. Since then he’s been cut back to one-turn races, which don’t seem to suit him as well. He also caught a sloppy track last time, and he’s never run well on that kind of going. This stretch-out should benefit him, and he would also be suited by a more aggressive ride from Lezcano given this race’s murky pace scenario.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Ready Soul
                    Backups/savers: 5-Vantastic

Forecast: Ready Soul returns to his claim level, where two races back the veteran gelding wired the field in a similar $50,000 middle distance grass affair in an effort that if repeated should be more than good enough to handle this assignment. That win was accomplished as the controlling speed; today, with other speed signed on, the Doug O’Neill-trained son of More Than Ready might need to settle in the second flight and attack from there. He’s won that way in the past, so if the race flow dictates that strategy leading rider Juan Hernandez has the option to employ it. Vantastic might be more comfortable around one turn but he has won over this course and distance in the past, and with the switch to Frankie he will be dangerous from off the pace if the fractions up front set things up for a closer.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 6-Big Switch
                    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Big Switch is listed at 6/5 on the morning line and looks every bit of that on paper. The John Sadler-trained filly has been away since last May, but her workouts indicate she is fit and ready, and having won her debut we know she can fire fresh. When last seen, the daughter of Mr. Big captured the Melair Stakes for state-bred foes two-turning over the local main track, and while she’s facing open company in this first level allowance event she holds an obvious and distinct edge based on speed figures and is likely to outclass this field. We’ll use her as a short-priced rolling exotic single but otherwise pass the race.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Soaring Sky; 1-La V.
                    Backups/savers: 3-Unwritten Code

Forecast: This abbreviated turf sprint for $25,000 claiming older fillies and mares requires a spread in rolling exotic play, with the three inside runners looking to have an edge over the others. Soaring Sky is seeking her first win since arriving from Europe, and after chasing home much tougher stakes and allowance foes in her first three local starts she may have finally found her friends. The John Sadler-trained import will have plenty of pace to chase, so if she’s given the patient ride that worked best for her overseas the lightly raced 5-year-old mare should be capable of tagging the suspect leaders close home. Based on her Irish form, she’s more than good enough to win at this level. La V. has a prior win over the Santa Anita turf course and is another that might appreciate patient tactics. She was rushed off her feet in her last two starts and paid for it late; perhaps she should be allowed to do her best running late despite the temptation of gunning to the front from her rail draw. Unwritten Code seeks her third straight score while moving up another notch on the class ladder, and while she’s unproven on grass she has the kind of early zip that will make her dangerous if she can shake loose early. At 5-1 on the morning line, she’s worth including somewhere on your ticket.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Six Feet; 2-Tom’s X S
                    Backups/Savers: none

Forecast: Six Feet outran his 6-1 odds when finishing a solid runner up in his debut vs. maiden $50,000 foes last May, but then disappeared. The Ryan Hanson-trained gelding returns protected in a sign of confidence in this state-bred straight maiden dash while showing a work tab that should have him fit enough, so with Ramon Vasquez riding him back combined with the addition of blinkers the son of Dads Cap looks extremely live in a below average race for the level. Tom’s X S, a closing second after a slow start over five furlongs on grass in his debut at this level last month, was likely best in that race and will be tough to beat if he can duplicate that performance on dirt. However, his pedigree is strictly grass, so we’re not sure that he will, though he still must be considered a major player and the one to beat. These are the two we’ll be using in rolling exotic play while leaving out the 5/2 morning line favorite, Magnificent Ride. The Clubhouse Ride gelding is drawn comfortably outside and has numbers that can win, but he’s already an 11-race maiden and has failed as the odds-on favorite in two of his last three starts.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Itzel; 5-California Bling; Rylan Jayne
                    Backups/savers: 7-Always California

Forecast: Itzel exits an infinitely tougher straight maiden sprint on dirt for juvenile fillies at Del Mar in her debut last month and realistically drops into the maiden $62,500 ranks today while facing a field she should be able to outrun from start to finish. The daughter of Mo Town remains above her original $42,000 purchase price, so this is where she belongs, and as a daughter of Hollywood Derby winner Mo Town she should move up on grass. The shortened trip to five and one half furlongs won’t hurt, either. California Bling was nowhere two-turning on grass up last time out but turns back in trip and ran quite well in her debut sprinting over the all-weather surface at Golden Gate Fields in which she closed with energy after a slow start to wind up third. A repeat of that race today makes her dangerous. Ryan Jayne fifth sprinting on turf vs. straight maidens at Del Mar in November, is another that should appreciate this easier assignment. Leading jockey Juan Hernandez rides her back, a positive sign. Also worth tossing in is the first timer Always California, based at San Luis Rey Downs where she put together a decent series of works for a clever outfit. She certainly won’t have to be a world beater to fit with these.

                    Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Head Start; 5-Twentyseventrouts;
                    Backups/savers: 4-Never Sway

Forecast: Anything goes in this restricted (nw-2) $25,000 claiming sprint for fillies and mares. Spread as deeply as your budget allows. Head Start plummets in class and at this level should have every chance to regain her winning form. She’s won over the Santa Anita main track in the past and has enough early zip to be on the lead or at least in a favorable stalking position outside. She’s been started and stopped on a few times in a seven race career so there’s a question of condition but if she fires her best shot she can win. Twentyseventrouts has numbers that fit in this league and will appreciate this considerably softer assignment. She has a prior win (her maiden) over the local main track back in March of 2021, and after being rested for two months shows a recent work tab that appears fairly promising. Never Sway lacks tactical speed but if there’s a pace meltdown she should be heard from late. Freshened since early November, the Craig Lewis-trained filly usually gets at least a piece of it and won over this track and distance when breaking her maiden last May.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-The Grey Wizard; 2-Ajaaweed
                    Backups/savers: 4-Agatino

Forecast: The Grey Wizard returns to the first-level allowance ranks after finishing a closing second in the marathon Hollywood Turf Cup-G2 at Del Mar in late November. This clearly should be an easier spot (and it is) though to be frank the race he exits was far below standard for a graded stakes. His only win was an all-weather score at this distance at Dundalk in Ireland last year, but he’s had just seven starts and therefore has room for further improvement, so with rising speed figures the Graham Motion-trained gelding rates top billing. Ajaaweed is now 6 years old and remarkably will be trying grass for the first time (how is that possible?). Can’t think of any reason why he wouldn’t like it. Winless in two years, the son of Curlin once had some quality, having finished second in the Remsen S.-G2 as a two-year-old, and recent workouts have been especially sharp. Agatino stretches out to 10 furlongs for the first time and should enjoy the trip. Another Irish invader with only seven outings and therefore with plenty of room for improvement, the Phil D’Amato-trained gelding removes blinkers (like this angle) and charts reasonably well off his closing third place at this level over a middle distance at Del Mar in late November. However, he was unplaced with some trouble (but not that much) in a dull outing earlier this month, so we’re not quite sure what to expect today.

                    __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ____________________

Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-My Man Bags; 9-Sunrise Journey
                    Backups/savers: 8-Let’s Rejoyce

Forecast: My Man Bags missed in a photo at 3/5 at Los Alamitos last month while failing to duplicate his impressive bottom-rung (and highly rated) $8,000 claiming score at Del Mar in his previous race, but the Mark Glatt-trained gelding remains protected in a sign of confidence and should be given a chance to make amends. A three-time winner in nine career stars, the lightly raced 5-year-old clearly has had issues but gets a considerable break in the weights with the switch to good bug boy Aguilar so the son of Daredevil may bounce back with this best stuff. Sunrise Journey was off form in his last two starts, but a wet track at Los Alamitos last time out might have been a legitimate excuse. He drops a notch below his claim level, is comfortably drawn outside, and has won 13 races during his career, so we have to use him. Let’s Rejoyce is a perfect one-for-one over the Santa Anita main track and projects to be part of the pace throughout. The Los Alamitos-based runner has numbers that fit, so we’ll toss him in on a ticket or two as a saver.

                    RACE 9: Post: 4:37 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Feathers; 8-Jibber Jabber; 5-Harpers Gallop
                    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Feathers was below form when missing at 6/5 in a similar mid-level claiming turf affair for fillies and mares last month at Del Mar but trainer Jeff Mullins, Jr. (filling in for his suspended father) has won three of four starts since taking over so we suspect this veteran mare will rebound with a top effort in her first start off the $32,000 claim. Always most effective when held up early and produced late, the Irish-bred mare retains Juan Hernandez and was sharp two races back when winning over this course and distance from far off the pace. Jibber Jabber can be a late threat when she’s feeling up to it and is another that should benefit from this easier assignment. With the some help up front, she is likely to make some serious noise under Frankie in the closing stages.
Harpers Gallop stretches out again and likely will be prominent throughout, perhaps inheriting a stalker’s role with a couple of other speed types drawn inside her. First or second in nine of 22 career starts, the seven year old mare switches to Flavian Prat, has won over this course in the past, and must be considered a contender with this significant drop in class.

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

                      January 20, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a compact 9-race card scheduled. The feature rolls in Race 7, a Filly and Mares Open Pace with a $40,000 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 6, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                      Race 6

2-Morning Has Broken (5/2)-Bako trainee has done well versus better and should be forwardly placed from the start. Usually is in the hunt at Yonkers (37-11-2-12).
6-Village Jade (2-1)-The Burke barn has been rolling along in the new year and this 5-year-old mare has hit the board in 3 of 5 starts at YR with 1 picture. This will be a test but raced on 1-13 at M1 and could be tighter than others.

                      Race 7

5-Jody (9/5)-Comes into this affair riding a 2 race Big M win streak (12-30 & 1-13). Has hit the board in 14 of 24 starts here with 4 wins but this level could be a challenge. Deserves a long look but beware of a short price.
7-Lit De Rose (6-1)-Went on a form spree from 11-11 through 12-22 racking up 5 straight at YR and most wins were versus better than this. Has won 52% of her races on this oval (12 of 23) and is worth a swing at this price. Could be tough to beat if dialed on high.

                      Race 8

5-Marty Monkhouser A (2-1)-Team Stratton has heated up and this 14-year-old should be a main player against $15k claimers. Could blast out, land on the point, and make every call a winning one.
7-Aces Rock (20-1)-Bettor's Delight 6-year-old got in a race at Fhld on 1-7 and finished last. That performance adds to the juicy price but does show a win here versus this kind on 12-2 and will use coming out of the Holiday break.

                      Race 9

1-Rockathon (7/2)-Put a mile in on 1-14 at M1 and now drops to a spot to shine. Posted a win here at this class on 11-1 and started from the rail. History could repeat itself.
8-Ourrhythmnblues N (5-1)-Yonkers record is only 1-10 but was a check-getter racing with $50k claimers. The post should help the price but could be over bet off the 152.2 mile at the Big M.

                      $1.00 Late Pick 4

Gold Square’s Cyberknife, a multiple Grade 1-winning son of 2018 Pegasus World Cup champion Gun Runner, was one of the most successful 3-year-olds in 2022, winning the Arkansas Derby (G1) and Haskell Invitational (G1) and finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1), beaten a head by Cody’s Wish.

Scheduled to make his final career start in the Pegasus before embarking on a stallion career, Cyberknife is trained by Brad Cox, who saddled Knicks Go for a victory in the 2021 Pegasus World Cup prior to the 2021 Horse of the Year’s runner-up finish last year behind Life Is Good.

Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who saddled Arrogate for a Pegasus World Cup triumph in 2017, trains Karl Watson, Michael Pegram and Paul Weitman’s Defunded, a 4-year-old gelded son of Dialed In that closed out the 2022 season with victories in the Awesome Again (G1) and Native Diver (G3). Godolphin’s Proxy, trained by Michael Stidham, is a 5-year-old homebred son of Tapit that earned Grade 1 credentials in the Clark (G1) at Churchill Downs, his 2022 finale.

C2 Racing Stable and La Milagrosa Stable’s White Abarrio, Gary Barber’s Get Her Number, Bruce Lunsford’s Art Collector Jet Set Racing Stable’s Super Corinto and Fernando Vine Ode’s O’Connor are other Grade 1 or Group 1 winners among the top dozen invitees.

White Abarrio won the $1 million Curlin Florida Derby (G1) going 1 1/8 miles last April at Gulfstream and is trained by defending Championship Meet leader Saffie Joseph Jr., also represented on the invite list by Daniel Alonso’s Skippylongstocking, third-place finisher in the Belmont Stakes (G1) who capped his sophomore season by winning the Harlan’s Holiday (G3) Dec. 31 at Gulfstream, and Chilean Group 1 winner O’Connnor.

Get Her Number won the American Pharoah (G1) in 2020 and was twice Grade 1-placed in 2022 including a second in the Cigar Mile, a half-length ahead of White Abarrio. Art Collector won the 2021 Woodward (G1) and successfully defended his Charles Town Classic (G2) title in 2022. Like O’Connor, Super Corinto parlayed a Group 1 victory in Chile into wins at Gulfstream.

Grade 2 winner Stilleto Boy, third in last year’s Pegasus World Cup; Simplification, winner of the Fountain of Youth (G2) last winter at Gulfstream; and Oaklawn Handicap (G2) winner Last Samurai round out the top 12 invitations.

Woodward runner-up Law Professor was removed from the reserve list leaving it at four (in order of preference): Greenwood Cup (G3) winner Ridin With Biden; Hoist the Gold, third last out in the Malibu (G1); Endorsed, fourth in last year’s Pegasus World Cup; and Arkansas Derby runner-up Barber Road.

California Racing Partners, Ciaglia Racing and Ryan Hanson’s One More Bid, last out winner of the Mathis Mile (G2) Dec. 26 at Santa Anita, was added to the main invitation list for the Pegasus Turf following the defection of Grade 1 winner In Love, the only changes in the top 12.

Two-time defending champion Colonel Liam continues to top invitees to the Pegasus Turf. Robert and Lawana Low’s 6-year-old finished sixth in the Dec. 31 Fort Lauderdale (G2) at Gulfstream, his first race in 281 days. He is joined by City Man and Grade 1 winner Decorated Invader, respectively 1-2 in the Fort Lauderdale for trainer Christophe Clement.

The main invitees include Ivar, a Brazilian-bred multiple Group 1 winner in Argentina that won the 2020 Shadwell Turf Mile (G1); Master Piece, winner of the Eddie Read (G2) and second in the Del Mar Handicap (G2); Hollywood Derby (G1) winner Speaking Scout; Who’s the Star, riding a three-race win streak in the Durham Cup (G3), Autumn (G2) and Valedictory (G3) on Woodbine’s all-weather surface; and 2022 Bay Shore (G3) winner Wit, third by less than a length in the Hollywood Derby.

Jordan Wycoff’s Atone has placed four times in graded-stakes including the 2021 Fort Lauderdale and most recently the Mint Million (G3) last fall at Kentucky Downs. He ran fourth behind Colonel Liam, beaten 1 1/2 lengths, in the 2022 Pegasus Turf. Trainer Mike Maker won the Pegasus Turf with Zulu Alpha in 2020.

Charles Fipke’s Lady Speightspeare is the lone female on the invitation list. The 5-year-old Speightstown mare owns four career graded-stakes wins – the 2020 Natalma (G1) and 2022 Nassau (G2), Trillium (G3) and Seaway (G3), all at Woodbine. She exits a third in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) Nov. 5 at Keeneland.

Team Valor et. al’s Hurricane Dream has been group-stakes placed four times in Europe that has yet to race in the U.S. He was beaten a head when second in the one-mile Brunner Oettingen Rennen (G2) last September in Germany.

Cellist, Law Professor and Street Ready came off the Pegasus Turf reserve list, which now includes, in preferred order, multiple graded-stakes placed Good Governance, fourth last out in the Fort Lauderdale; 2022 Knickerbocker (G3) winner King Cause; and Dark Shift, winner of the Royal Hunt Cup last summer at Royal Ascot.

The Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf saw Grade 3 winner Kate’s Kingdom and Stolen Holiday, winner of the Dec. 31 Suwannee River (G3) at Gulfstream, removed from the main invite list and replaced by Spirit and Glory and Sweet Enough.

Trevor Harris’ Sweet Enough was elevated from the reserve list. Trained by Hall of Famer Roger Attfield, Sweet Enough won three times in her native England before coming to the U.S., where she capped 2022 with an optional claiming allowance victory going 1 1/16 miles Dec. 29 at Gulfstream.

Michael Nentwig, Michael Dubb, Beast Mode Racing, John Rochfort and Robert Falcone Jr.’s Spirit and Glory is an Irish-bred mare that has won two of six North American starts topped by the Virginia Oaks last fall at Colonial Downs. Last out the 4-year-old ran fourth in the Tropical Park Oaks Dec. 26 at Gulfstream.

British-bred Lady Rockstar, by Frankel, was second by a length in the Suwannee River. Perseverancia exits a runner-up finish to Dalika in the Nov. 24 Cardinal (G3) while Scotish Star, third in the Chillingworth (G3) on dirt at Santa Anita last fall, finished sixth as the favorite in the Suwannee River.

Bridlewood Farm’s multiple stakes winner Bay Storm captured the Incredible Revenge last summer at Monmouth Park and ended her 2022 season running second by a nose in the Mint Ladies Sprint (G3) at Kentucky Downs and third after setting the pace in the one-mile Suwannee River.

Artie’s Princess, Dalika, Justify My Love, Queen Goddess, Shantisara and Wakanaka remain from the initial list. Shantisara earned Grade 1 credentials while winning the 2021 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Keeneland and is trained by Chad Brown, who saddled Regal Glory for a victory in the 2022 Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Wakanaka, who is trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, captured the Fall Harvest to conclude a productive 2022 season that included a victory in the Dance Smartly (G2) at Woodbine and a runner-up finish behind Regal Glory in the Just a Game (G1) at Belmont. Al Stall Jr.-trained Dalika, a hard-hitting 7-year-old daughter of Pastorius, earned Grade 1 credentials with a victory in the Beverly D. (G1) at Churchill Downs in August and also won the Ladies Turf (G3) at Kentucky Downs and the Cardinal (G3) at Churchill.

2021 American Oaks (G1) and 2022 Santa Ana (G3) and Robert J. Frankel (G3) winner Queen Goddess is trained by Michael McCarthy, who saddled City of Light for a victory in the 2019 Pegasus World Cup. Artie’s Princess won the Presque Isle Masters (G2) for defending Championship Meet leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., while Justify My Love is a Brazilian-bred Group 2 winner in Argentina that hails from the same connections as Ivar.

The lone horse on the reserve list is new addition Mona Stella, owned by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Andie Biancone and Patrick Biancone. The multiple stakes-placed Mona Stella exits a solid runner-up finish as the favorite in the one-mile Sunshine Filly & Mare Turf Jan. 14 at Gulfstream.

The 6-year-old Irish-bred captured the 2022 Man O’ War (G1) at Belmont and finished off the board in the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) last time out.

COX CONFIDENT IN CYBERKNIFE AHEAD OF $3M PEGASUS WORLD CUP

                            January 19, 2023 | By 1/ST BET
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Two-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Brad Cox says he’s as expectant of a big performance on Jan. 28 by Gold Square LLC’s Cyberknife in Gulfstream Park’s $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) presented by Baccarat as he was with Knicks Go the past two years. Knicks Go won the 2021 Pegasus to kick off what proved to be a Horse of the Year campaign and was second last year behind Life Is Good, a finalist for 2022 Horse of the Year.

“It’s going to be a good race,” Cox said by phone from New Orleans. “We felt confident with Knicks Go both times. He ran two great races. Obviously, one was a winning effort and the other was second to a very, very good horse. I feel every bit as confident with this horse as I did with Knicks Go the two previous seasons.”

The 1 1/8-mile Pegasus World Cup for 4-year-olds and up headlines a program featuring eight stakes, seven graded, worth $5.3 million in purses including the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1) and $500,000 Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf Invitational (G1).

Cox loves what he’s seeing in Cyberknife’s training since the likely Pegasus favorite finished second by a head behind favored Cody’s Wish in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) at Keeneland, including another powerful workout Sunday morning at the Fair Grounds. With jockey Florent Geroux aboard, Cyberknife worked five-eighths of a mile alongside multiple stakes-winner Warrant in 1:00.60 before working on past the wire to finish in 1:12.60 for six furlongs.

Cox said Cyberknife galloped out seven-eighths of a mile in 1:25.40. Warrant’s official work time of 1:00.60 was the fastest of the morning among 44 works at the distance. Cyberknife was the only horse to work three-quarters of a mile.

“I feel we’re right where we need to be for him to run a big race,” Cox said. “We’ve got one more work here at the Fair Grounds, and then we plan on shipping that following Monday.”

The Pegasus will be the career finale for Cyberknife, a son of 2017 Horse of the Year and 2018 Pegasus winner Gun Runner, before retiring to stud at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky. The now 4-year-old colt will try to tack on another Grade 1 to go with victories in the Arkansas Derby and Haskell Invitational. He also was second in the Travers (G1) and third in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1) during last year’s $2 million season.

G1 Winners Art Collector, Super Corinto Breeze Sunday for PWC

Bruce Lunsford’s Grade 1 winner Art Collector continued working toward the Pegasus World Cup with a five-furlong breeze Sunday morning at Payson Park in 1:01.60.

The 6-year-old son of Bernardini, who has won 10 of 20 starts and $2.3 million, will be making his first start since finishing fifth in the Lukas Classic (G2) Oct. 1 at Churchill Downs.

“He went very well this morning,” Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott said. “I was happy with him. He galloped out well and cooled out. It’s looking like he’s coming into the race well.”

Consecutive winner of the Charles Town Classic (G2) and Alydar at Saratoga and the 2021 Woodward (G1), Art Collector was originally being considered for the Cigar Mile (G1) Dec. 3 at Aqueduct and Harlan’s Holiday (G3) Dec. 31 at Gulfstream, the local prep for the Pegasus.

“We were thinking of the Cigar Mile, but we lost some time with him due to a foot abscess,” Mott said. “Then we considered Harlan’s Holiday, but we felt we just needed more time.”

Jet Set Racing Stable’s Super Corinto breezed a half-mile in 49.03 seconds at Gulfstream Park Sunday morning in preparation for a start in the Pegasus World Cup.

The work was the fifth in a series of works since the Amador Sanchez-trained 5-year-old captured a Dec. 8 optional claiming allowance at Gulfstream. The Argentine-bred son of Super Saver was a Group 1 winner in Chile before being sent to Sanchez, for whom he finished second behind Chilean Group 1 winner O’Connor in his U.S. debut Nov. 12.

Both Chilean imports, who took turns beating each other in Group 1 races before heading to the U.S., are among the 12 horses invited to the Pegasus World Cup.

Everything Clicking for Ivar Heading into G1 Pegasus Turf

After Ivar encountered a couple of setbacks the past couple of years, trainer Paulo Lobo is happy that everything has been clicking for the 7-year-old Brazilian-bred horse heading into Gulfstream Park’s $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1) Jan. 28.

Ivar had his penultimate Pegasus Turf work Saturday at The Thoroughbred Center in Lexington, Ky., tooling five-eighths of a mile in 1:02.

“Ivar is ready,” Lobo said. “His work [Saturday] was very good, in company nice and easy, like he likes to do. His final work will be next Saturday here, and then we’re going to ship him either that Monday or Tuesday.”

Ivar has competed in the past three runnings of the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) on turf. He finished fourth by a total of one length at Keeneland this past fall, third in 2021 at Del Mar and another good fourth at Keeneland in 2020. Six of the eight horses that finished in front of Ivar in those races came from Europe.

“I think his race was very good,” Lobo said of the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Mile won by European standout Modern Games. “He lost to a very top horse. Javier Castellano was riding him for the first time. He rode a very good race, and since then we’ve pointed for the Pegasus Turf and we’ve never missed a day and never had a bad day. Everything that we planned is happening, no problems.”

Ivar won Keeneland’s 2020 Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) in his fourth U.S. start after being a leading 2-year-old in Argentina. Lobo has had to adjust plans at times the past two years because of minor issues and turf cancellations. Ivar ran only three times in 2021 and four times last year, when he resumed competition off an eight-month layoff to win the Jonathan B. Schuster Memorial at Horseshoe Indianapolis. He was second in his two starts before the Breeders’ Cup, in the Woodbine Mile (G1) won by Modern Games and Keeneland’s Turf Mile (G1), a race Ivar won in 2020.

“We were ready to run last May and had a little foot problem that delayed his first race for 2022,” Lobo said. “But he’s been doing very well since. If you look at his past performances, he’s almost always running in Grade 1 races. It’s always tough. The three times he ran in the Breeders’ Cup, he ran very well. He has been representing America at a top level.”

Castellano will be back on board in the Pegasus, Lobo said.

Lobo said Grade 1 winner In Love will not run in the Pegasus Turf but that the 6-year-old Brazilian-bred mare Justify My Love will compete in the $500,000 Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf Invitational (G1) on the undercard. Like Ivar, Justify My Love is owned by Bonne Chance Farm LLC and breeder Stud RDI LLC and was sired by the Japanese-bred and raced Agnes Gold.

Justify My Love was a Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed in Argentina before being sent to Lobo last year. Off a nine-month layoff, she was sixth in her first two starts before capturing a Churchill Downs’ turf allowance race Nov. 19, her last start.

“She’s a very nice filly,” Lobo said. “It took a little while for her to adjust here, but she had a very nice win at Churchill Downs. She’s in top form now, physically and mentally. I think she’ll run well over there. The race is very tough, but I think she’s going to enjoy a mile and an eighth. She’s training super, this filly. Super.”

                              Charles Town - Race #6
#4 Alli Bobby She steps up in a logical spot after the maiden win, and she has been a pretty reliable finisher around two turns when in claiming company. Think she might be an ok fit here.
#6 Pearly Ghost She stacks up well here on the drop out of allowance company, but she also has a tendency to give away ground late in the lane and probably gets overbet here.
#1 Philmary Castle She moved up nicely when getting around two turns for the first time last out, and she might be quick enough to find herself up on the splits again here from the fence.
Race Summary Alli Bobby might be a decent mid-range price in here while stepping up to try winners for the first time, and I think she might land a great first-over kind of trip.
                              Charles Town - Race #7
#6 Sound Off He has historically done really good work here, and he can be a pretty stout finisher on his best day. Mild worry about the race shape, but I think he'll come alive late.
#3 Dixie Drawl He ran a couple okay races here last year, but I still think he's better on a full-size surface. Tactical player should work out the trip.
#4 Outlier He's a good fit with these while coming back off a Grade I try and a couple allowance starts in New York, none of which went all that well. He's probably overbet here while getting back on a track he's just 1-for-5 over. The trip should be great from close range.
Race Summary Sound Off has some appeal from downtown in here, as one of his better running lines would keep him in the mix with obvious players like Dixie Drawl and Outlier.
                              Charles Town - Race #8
#6 Devil's Canyon He failed to stay in his first two starts at Laurel, but the waters get a bit easier here, and he might work out a good trip near the top with this cheaper bunch.
#1 Gorun I guess he's supposed to win this, but he's already had 13 tries, and it isn't like he's a fresh face at this level with three non-threatening underneath shares with similar lately. Tough, but not with my money.
#4 Sloe Gin Biz Actually think he has a decent enough claim on top honors here, but he's another one with plenty of tries and not a whole lot of excuses -- this will be start number 23. Still, I think he gets a nice trip, and his one-paced tactical style might play well here on the drop and give him the jump on the chalk. Considered him on top.
Race Summary Tough to get enthused about much in here, and Gorun is easily the most likely winner as the chalk. I think Devil's Canyon and Sloe Gin Biz provide some palatable price alternatives if you're trying to get past the chalk in the multis.
