Friday CFB Free play. My selection is on the 'over' between UAB and Western Kentucky at 8 pm et on Friday.


One thing we know for sure is that Western Kentucky is going to get its share of offensive plays off, noting that it is averaging 30 rushing attempts and 44 passing attempts per game this season. The Hilltoppers are absolutely stuffing boxscores, particularly with their aerial attack, completing 32+ passes in five straight games entering Friday's showdown with UAB. The Blazers check in 4-2 on the campaign but have certainly benefitted from a favorable schedule - favored by double-digits in five of six games to date. Teams have certainly been able to run on the Blazers defense, averaging 144 rush yards per game on 4.1 yards per rush. If the Hilltoppers can get their ground attack going here in addition to their explosive passing game, they'll undoubtedly hang another crooked number on the scoreboard, noting that they've have an incredibly high floor in terms of offensive production, with their season-low coming in at 27 points. UAB is almost a reverse image, noting that it has run at will on the opposition while yet to really get its passing game going. That should change here, though. Despite being involved in plenty of close games where game script wouldn't necessarily lead the opposition to throw the ball consistently, opponents have attacked WKU through the air to the tune of 40 pass attempts per game. Last year's meeting between these two teams totalled 'only' 51 points but that was with both passing games struggling (neither team threw for more than 162 yards). I believe we have shootout potential here, noting that the 'over' is 34-18 in the Hilltoppers last 52 games as a home favorite, averaging 64.1 total points in that situation. Take the over.

Utah's 123-102 win at home against the Nuggets in Wednesday's season opener caught everyone by surprise. Denver was suppose to make easy work of a Jazz team that many believed to be tanking for the No. 1 pick. I have to think some of that was Denver potentially looking ahead to Friday's big showdown with Golden State. I could see this going the exact opposite for the Jazz on the road against a very good Timberwolves team. Got to think Rudy Gobert is going to be motivated to show out against his old team. I got Minnesota winning this thing by double-digits rather easily. Bet the Timberwolves +8.5!

I'll recommend laying the 1.5 goals, as I expect Colorado to not only win this game, but to do so by a sizeable margin. That makes the "puckline" option very attractive. Seattle is off a 4-3 OT loss at home to St. Louis. It can't score well, averaging just 2.80 GPG, while allowing 4.00. The Avs are off a 4-3 OT home loss to Winnipeg. They'll be eager to take out their frustrations after that setback. Colorado averages 4.25 GPG, while conceding 3.50; consider the Avalanche on the puckline!

The night racing season in Victoria continues at Moonee Valley on Friday night with an eight-race card scheduled for Manikato Stakes Night. The Group 1 sprint worth $2 million headlines a competitive night of racing on a track rated a Good 4, with the rail in the true position throughout. As always, we expect it to be no disadvantage to be up on speed throughout the night, so make sure to stake accordingly.

The first event is set to jump at 6:15pm AEDT.

Moonee Valley Best Bet: Taunting

The Michael Hickmott-trained Taunting was scratched from Morphettville last weekend and saved for this 955m scamper. The four-year-old gelding simply went far too hard out in front during the Listed Wylie Handicap when finishing third, but a step back to a BM78 over 955m looks to be an ideal recipe for success. He draws barrier three with Damian Lane on board and with no speed drawn underneath him, look for Frosty to hold the rail and take a sit just off the leaders’ heels throughout. He will need a bit of luck at the top of the straight, but if the run appears, we expect Taunting to explode late on and ultimately prove a class above this lot.

Next Best at Moonee Valley: Silent Sovereign

We will be looking to make our presence felt in the opening event when the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Silent Sovereign steps out of the Group 2 Rose of Kingston Stakes into something easier. The six-year-old mare was screaming out for a mile plus when resuming over 1400m and gets that when she steps out over 2040m. She was a smart winner of the Group 2 Queen of the South Stakes during the Adelaide Carnival in May and if she is anywhere near that type of performance, she simply has too much class for a field like this. Look for John Allen to have the Dalakhani mare settled midfield in the moving line and when asked for an effort, with a bit of luck Silent Sovereign can negate any potential track bias and finish over the top of her rivals.

Best Value at Moonee Valley: Miss Roseiano

Things have not gone to plan so far this campaign for the Peter Gelagotis-trained Miss Roseiano but a low draw and a favourable track for leaders could be the tonic for success. The three-year-old filly showed plenty of potential during her juvenile campaign, claiming the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview, before splitting the smart duo of Revolutionary Miss and English Riviera in the Blue Diamond Prelude. She clearly has above average ability and from barrier three with Jordan Childs on board we expect to see the filly take up the running. If Miss Roseiano can hold out those who are drawn out wide, she has a high-cruising speed and at a price will give her rivals something to catch.

NSW racing heads to Scone on Friday for an eight-race card. We currently sit on a Heavy 10 track, and with plenty of rain forecast across the Hunter Region we’re likely to be on a Heavy 10 all day. The rail is out 3m from the 800m marker to winning post and true the remainder.
Best Bet at Scone – Cloudland

Our best of the day comes in race six with Cloudland for the Kris Lees yard. The Swiss Ace gelding comes here in outstanding form winning first-up at Scone over 1300m by 0.3 lengths, though to the eye the win was much better than the margin. He was hard held crossing the winning post and looks set to handle these heavy conditions on Friday based on that effort on September 23. That day it was a similar rated track to what we’re expecting and assuming that’s what we get the 1400m should be no issue. He steps up to Class 3 here, but it looks an easy enough assignment for the four-year-old to keep his winning record intact. Dylan Gibbons picks up the ride and expect him to ride aggressively to pinch a spot forward and possibly the one-by-one. If he lobs there, it’s race over.

Next Best at Scone – Loud

Bjorn Baker trains this three-year-old filly by Ocean Park as she looks to break her maiden status on Friday afternoon. Loud was unlucky not to win last start at Bathurst over the 1200m when beaten a lip by Kiara Diane. She started as a short-priced favourite on that occasion, but got too far back on a day where you simply couldn’t make up the ground late. She’s third-up this preparation now and strips fit for what looks a comfortable task as she strives to notch her first win for the camp. Although she’s drawn a wide gate that doesn’t bother us as we think Mitchell Bell will push forward and possibly even lead with a lack of tempo in the race. If she can get her own way up in front she should be too hard to run down. With fitness on her side, Loud looks a great bet.

Best Value at Scone – Rosie Impact

Rosie Impact comes here on a very short back-up after finishing fourth at Newcastle on October 15 and looks ready to win third-up here. Richard and Will Freedman train this mare by Real Impact and looks to be on an upward trajectory in form. She reached very talented heights when competitive at Group 1 level behind Gypsy Goddess last preparation and finally looks to be recapturing that form after hitting the line strong in her first two hit outs. This is a very likeable race for Rosie Impact at BM58 level and we even get the ultimate gear change with jockey Grant Buckley getting back on this girl. In her 13 career starts, Buckley has been aboard for both her two wins and she is a massive chance of making it three wins come Friday afternoon. A mid-field sit with cover for the pair and they’ll be hitting the line strongly to score.
