Presque Isle Downs Selections and Analysis for Oct. 17
        Dick Powell

Dick Powell offers his picks and analysis for the Monday racing card at Presque Isle Downs.
        Race One:

1st: (4) MUY CHISTOSA – shipped here from Gulfstream Park and promptly won at 2-5 to break her maiden in her ninth try. She came back against much better and had a rough trip so now the daughter of Practical Joke drops to a more realistic class level.

2nd: (5) BODE BY YOU – did nothing on the Tapeta at Turfway Park but since coming here she has thrived. Daughter of Munnings was claimed for this price in a race that she ran second in, then came back and ran the same race for Ron Potts.

3rd: (6) MORE RANSOM – added blinkers and Lasix two starts back and went gate to wire for Tim Girten.
        Race Two:

1st: (5) NIGHT RIDE – chased the pace in his well-bet career debut here from post 1 and draws much better today. If he shows the normal improvement second time out, he should be able to stalk the pace and take advantage of the prevailing bias.

2nd: (7) AZTEC LEGEND – gunned to the front and held on for second in his career debut. Son of hot, young sire Sharp Azteca can stalk from here for Tim Hamm who wins 22% on synthetic tracks and 19% with his maiden special weight starters.

3rd: (2) SLICK EVANS – first-time starter by Runhappy, who wins 16% with his maiden special weight runners.
        Race Three:

1st: (2) SILVERY RILL – broke her maiden going five furlongs at Delaware Park, then came back and raced evenly against winners. Daughter of War Front tries Tapeta for the first time for Christophe Clement – 16% with his synthetic track starters.

2nd: (5) HIDEKI – broke her maiden on the Tapeta at Turfway Park then came here six months later and just missed against this level in very fast time. He had a troubled trip from post 1 last out but draws much better today with Erin Walker back aboard.

3rd: (3) DETERMINED HOPE – took her 10 tries for this daughter of Medaglia d’Oro to break her maiden in her Tapeta debut.
        Race Four:

1st: (6) JAMA DILLON – has raced mostly on turf in his career but he finally tries a synthetic track. He dropped some in class last out going five furlongs on the turf and just missed so he will probably drop far back before rallying for Pablo Morales.

2nd: (2) GOLDEN SURVIVOR – after running well against better, he finally dropped to this level and missed by a head as the even-money favorite after missing the break. Matt Kintz wins 28% second start out of his barn and he gets Gallardo back.

3rd: (4) UP FOR THE CHANCE – ran well on the dirt before coming here and racing evenly for John Fennessy.
        Race Five:

1st: (3) NEVER KNOW CHRISTY – went gate-to-wire two starts back on the Tapeta at Turfway Park then came here three months later and held on for this. Freshened up for 77 days, she returns for Bill Cowans, who wins 27% in this spot.

2nd: (1) SCAT ATTACK – won two in a row on the dirt at Arizona, then shipped to Mountaineer Park off the claim by Juan Silva and won by five lengths. Silva wins 27% first start after a win and 23% with his overall claimers.

3rd: (7) VEIL – nine-year-old mare has run great on the Tapeta at Gulfstream and Woodbine and is well spotted here.
        Race Six:

1st: (5) AMERICA’S JUSTICE – won his Tapeta debut here against this class level then went back to Finger Lakes and faded. Son of American Pharoah comes back for Beth Miller-Saul, who wins 20% with her route runners.

2nd: (6) PATRIOT DRIVE – made a menacing middle move two starts back in a very fast-paced race then came back against this claiming level and won by a neck. Shelly Radosevich wins 20% first start after a win and 17% going long..

3rd: (1) GROUNDED – horse-for-the-course has been tiring lately so he looks for class relief. Maybe his speed will hold from post 1.
        Race Seven:

1st: (3) DAKOTA DANCER – speedy daughter of Freud just missed going gate to wire against stakes company two starts back then was a game second against similar company to these. Gaddiel Martinez rides – flat-bet profit with his last 150 route mounts.

2nd: (4) BALI BELLE – one-dimensional closer tries Tapeta after racing on turf in all of her career starts. Christophe Clement wins 19% second start off the layoff and 17% first start after a maiden win. Pablo Morales gets the mount.

3rd: (2) THISLADYIS THE LAW – has won three times here and was a game second at this allowance level last out.
        Race Eight:

1st: (6) KEYPIT – beat this level going two turns three starts back then just missed last out when allowed to set a dawdling pace. She turns back to a long sprint but speed hasn’t been holding lately and she should be fit from her route efforts.

2nd: (4) RUN LAUGHING – horse-for-the-course has prospered since dropping down in class. She raced wide two starts back but then ran a good third last out after being up on the pace from the start. Bill Martin is an amazing 0-for-27 with Huber Villa-Gomez.

3rd: (9) SQUAD UP – romped by six lengths two starts back then ran ugly when moved up to allowance company.

We’re racing at Muswellbrook on Monday afternoon to kick-off our racing week.

The rail sits in the true position the entire circuit and sit on a Soft 7 track, expect some slight improvement with a couple clearing days, however with rain expect on race-day Heavy 8 could be on the agenda come the first.

The first race gets underway at 1:15pm AEST and we’ve got a competitive eight-race card to do the form for.
Best Bet at Muswellbrook – Sugoi Legend

Our best bet of the day comes in the fourth race on the card in the form of Richard & Will Freedman-trained gelding Sugoi Legend. This horse by Maurice has had just the one start to his name, but that was a very competitive maiden at Warwick Farm on October 3. He was back and travelled wide turning for home that day and made up a stack of ground late to only be beaten four-lengths on the post. The extra 100m here to the 1500m, and a more favourable barrier draw should see him figure in what looks a moderate maiden. We expect him to be one or two pairs back off the speed, then when asked to get around the leaders be too strong for them. Looks a very nice type going forward.

Next Best at Muswellbrook – Miss Santorini

We’re happy to be with the mare from the Kris Lees yard Miss Santori in race-two. She comes here in better form than what it reads with a gut-busting run first-up at Port Macquarie, just pretend she never went around. She raced wide without cover throughout on September 25 and she was never able to cross the field, come Monday afternoon from gate two expect Koby Jennings to take all luck out of the equation, and Miss Santorini should be able to take up her usual pattern of leading. She’ll roll along and be very tough to run down, particularly with market elect Samiballerina already scratched, we may have to take a shorter price, but her winning chances only improve.
          Next Best

          Race 2 – Silk #3 Miss Santorini (2)

          4yo Mare | T: Kris Lees | J: Koby Jennings (61kg)

          $4 with Bet365
Best Value at Muswellbrook – Hard To Dismiss

This mare by All Too Hard is going outstanding this preparation. A last-start winner at Tamworth, Hard to Dismiss looks exactly that on Monday afternoon. She’s looking for back-to-back wins after being competitive in Highway races in town before stepping back in grade at Tamworth on September 26. She’s got a negative style getting back in the running but she’s also ultra-consistent to offset that, and at each-way odds with online Bookmakers we’re happy to take a risk with her in a somewhat open BM66 affair. Mitchell Bell will have no choice but to take the Scott Singleton-trained galloper to the rear of the field, but she’ll be storming home late to test her rivals late.
          Best Value

          Race 6 – Silk #4 Hard To Dismiss (7)

          4yo Mare | T: Scott Singleton | J: Mitchell Bell (57kg)

Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Early Pick 4 Analysis

            October 17, 2022 | By Al Cimaglia

Woodbine Mohawk begins the week with a 12-race card. The feature goes in Race 9, a Preferred 2 Trot with a $34,000 purse. The 0.20 Early Pick 4 starts in Race 4, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

            Race 4

3-All Wrapped Up (4-1)-Didn't get the best of trips, searched for cover, and then had to go it on his own. Raced better than the line looked and finished gamely. Looking for more down the lane and should offer a fair price.
5-Truffle Too (5/2)-Takes a sizeable drop and JMac gets the assignment. Has cashed checks versus some tough foes and there is really no excuse for not taking a picture here. But hasn't won since 7-18 and won't single.

            Race 5

2-Mayhem Like Me (4-1)-Broke and lost all chance on 10-8 and is only 3-33 at Mohawk. Looking for a better price than the morning line. Roy could sit inside, use one move down the lane and trip out for a win.
3-JM Jack of Hearts (3-1)-Takes a big drop to the basement and this is another who is out of excuses. Tough to leave off the ticket but wins about as often as the seasons change.
6-Real Willey (7/2)-Raced big coming off a 2-month hiatus and the 2 that finished ahead are not working tonight. Should be tighter and ready to pick up only the 2nd win of the year. (25-1-4-7)

            Race 6

2-Toughsonofbeach (6-1)-Benefitted from lively fractions and a sharp steer by JMac to pop at big odds. Won't be 35-1 but should offer a square price and this race could set-up in a similar fashion.
5-Snap Test (7/2)-Here is another threat to roll by down the lane but needs a more alert start. Makes its debut for the Marfisi barn off a claim and Roy sticks. Has cashed 2nd place checks in the last 2 starts and may have a little extra this time to claim the top prize.

            Race 7

3-Sis (3-1)-Gets class and post relief plus makes its 1st start for the Dean stable. Roy is still in the bike, and may have found a spot to break her maiden (8-0-1-1) at a short price.
4-Dewitt This Moment (5-1)-Basically went 1st over into a 28.1 third quarter and faded down the lane. Could be in the mix with the right trip. Cullen takes the lines, and my guess is the odds will be longer than 5-1.

            0.20 Early Pick 4

            3,5/2,3,6/2,5/3,4
            Total Bet=$4.80

              Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #2
              Picks Notes
#7 Aztec Legend He showed good pace and stayed on nicely when second in the debut run, and he draws well to prompt the issue again here from the outside. Price may not be much, but something similar to the first try probably does the job here.
#2 Slick Evans Capable team sends out this firster in a race that actually has a decent bit of form from the few running lines on paper so far. Check him out on the tote and track.
#5 Night Ride He has to turn the tables on the top choice from that last run, but he might be a bit tighter with that race under his belt, and it wouldn't be a surprised to see him stick around a bit better here.
Race Summary Aztec Legend showed good pace in the debut try, and it really looks like any step forward off that run would likely get him a diploma against this group.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #3
              Picks Notes
#6 Wild Irish I thought she'd run a bit better going long last time out, but she turns back in a really reasonable spot against this crew, and her local sprint form has been pretty consistent. Mid-range price chance.
#2 Silvery Rill She was a good fit with the locals in that last one, and she should be in line for another good trip spying the pace. Capable player here, but I wouldn't want to land on this one at any short price.
#5 Hideki She's capable of better than she showed last time out, and she's an obvious threat here if she's able to get back to anything like the two-back effort.
Race Summary Wild Irish should offer an okay price in here, and they get her right back to her best game after the route experiment...did not go well. Cutback finisher can land this

Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
              Picks Notes
#1 Lady Outoftheblue She might get a cozy trip from the inside while saving some ground, and there are enough forward players in here to think she relaxes and comes running late. Her form has been reliable through three starts, and she doesn't seem overmatched.
#8 Starship Belmont She's capable of better than that last one, and I've been chasing her for a few starts locally. Think she's a bit better when she's able to relax off the splits, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see her bounce back here. Want her on the tickets.
#10 Midnight Pirate Riser has run off three in a row now with cheaper groups, but she wasn't totally overmatched when facing similar here earlier this season. Would be no surprise.
Race Summary Lots of ways to go in this one, including a look to #4 Bali Belle and #2 Thisladyis the Law, but Lady Outoftheblue stepped up nicely into allowance company in that last one, and she might get a really nice run of the race while trying the local footing for the first time.

                Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

                Parx - Race #1
                Picks Notes
#2 LIL MISS HOTSHOT (4-1) Classy 8-year-old can use her speed wisely in this spot, good value play.
#1 FRISKY FEELING (8-1) Flopped on drop to this level, good record at Parx and distance, could awaken off claim.
#5 CANOOCHEE (5-2) Rallied past ‘Hotshot’ to finish second in shorter route race.
Race Summary LIL MISS HOTSHOT dueled inside of the 5-2 winner and gave way after middle fractions that were nearly identical to a same-day, $7500/nw3 claimer for the boys. She can make good use of her speed in this field as she looks to surpass $400,000 in earnings. Bet to win and place.

                Parx - Race #3
                Picks Notes
#5 MAJOR CAM (3-2) Game try at Delaware off four-month layoff, returns to claim level, today’s Best Bet.
#6 STARSHIP GOTHAM (5-1) Bounced off rail by favorite Tough Workout at 7F, losing all chance for second.
#3 DADASHEV (8-1) Finished in the money at three distances in his last six starts.
Race Summary MAJOR CAM ran a good one off the claim by Ness and should graduate with a duplicate effort. He angled out at the quarter pole to take aim at the 9-2 pace setter but settled for second best. Bet to win and place and play a 5-6 exacta box.

                Parx - Race #6
                Picks Notes
#3 SON OF A SAINT (8-1) Gets class relief, starts fresh, slowed by pace and sharp winner in latest.
#1 SOCIAL GROUP (3-1) Missed photo finishes at this distance in his last two starts as the favorite.
#6 WAGON BOSS (8-5) Pressed and led briefly in mid-stretch in a tougher condition against four rivals.
Race Summary SON OF A SAINT raced 3- and 4-wide throughout, tried to launch a bid coming out of the final turn but raced evenly in the stretch for twice this claiming price. Risque Rebel controlled the pace and won for the fifth time in his last eight starts. He starts fresh and is a tempting 8-1 on the morning line, so bet to win and place.

                      The Walker Group Picks

                      # 1 STARSHIP TAXI 8/1

                      # 3 DOCTOR LEE 8/1

                      # 4 JUSTIN FRONT 7/2

I've got to go with STARSHIP TAXI and is a decent value-based wager given the 8/1 line. Could provide positive gains based on respectable recent speed figures with an average of 80. Reliable average speed figures in dirt sprint races make this racer a key contender. Hard to pass on this gelding with Batista in the saddle. DOCTOR LEE - This selection will feel the med change - now going off Lasix today. Has decent Equibase Class Figures relative to this group - worth a look. JUSTIN FRONT - Has run very well when racing a dirt sprint race. Baird has a strong win percent with horses racing in dirt sprint races.

                        #6 ROAD TO HEAT (ML=5/2)

ROAD TO HEAT - Jockey jumped on this gelding's back for the first attempt on Sep 14th. Should be in touch with the horse even better this time around. We have lots of early speed with this steed. He could wire this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 AISLE RUNNER (ML=7/5), #2 BLACK EYED BANDIT (ML=7/2), #3 SMOOTH BLUES (ML=5/1),

AISLE RUNNER - Generally I need a sprinter to have some recent success in short distance affairs in order to play him. Hard to back the public's top choice when he continues to lose as the favorite. BLACK EYED BANDIT - Garnered a somewhat easily forgotten speed rating last time around the track in a $6,250 Claiming race on Aug 31st. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that rating. SMOOTH BLUES - Hard to keep chasing this kind of 'bridesmaid' horse.

                        STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Bet on #6 ROAD TO HEAT to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds

                          Parx Racing - Race #2 - Post: 1:22pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $22,000 Class Rating: 83

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

                          #6 COMPOUND IT (ML=8/1)
                          #5 FRENCH TOAST (ML=5/1)
                          #3 JARLIAN (ML=9/2)
                          #1 TWO PRINCES (ML=6/1)

COMPOUND IT - He got a decent speed rating the last time he tried this trip. Look for this gelding to run lots better right here. Last event at Parx Racing finishing ninth in the slop is no indication of his true ability. FRENCH TOAST - Lots of positive 'vibes' attached to this pony and his connections. JARLIAN - The race may set up nicely for this mount's late kick and he's probably the best stretch runner in the field. Out of the money finish last race out at Parx Racing was better than it looked on paper. He improved position down the lane and never gave up. Closed a ton of ground in that last outing at 7 furlongs. Wouldn't be astonished to see him win today. TWO PRINCES - Looking like a potential overlay in this race at M/L odds of 6/1. Finished fifth in last race at Parx Racing but was close at the end. After the affair aboard this horse on Sep 5th, the rider is going to be in touch with the gelding much better. Closed a ton of ground in that last effort at 7 furlongs. Wouldn't be astonished to see him win today. Three consecutive improved speed ratings (78-80-83) make this one a solid contender.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #4 SPEIGHTSTER RED (ML=2/1), #7 GRAZELY (ML=3/1),

SPEIGHTSTER RED - Can't really be sure that the latest rating of 86 is valid since it was garnered on a muddy track. Hard to put your money on the win end of any thoroughbred that finishes second and third as often as this one does. This gelding hasn't been getting the job done as the public's top choice. GRAZELY - This field is a whole lot tougher than the ones he met in the last clash.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - COMPOUND IT - Ramirez is making good money with this horse. Tops in earnings per start.

                          STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Have to go with #6 COMPOUND IT on the win end if we get at least 7/2 odds

                            # 6 OUR STORMY SOPHIA 15/1

                            # 7 PAPA'S SILVER 2/1

                            # 1 MISS SCHILLER 20/1

I think OUR STORMY SOPHIA is a competitive pick particularly if the morning line of 15/1 holds. PAPA'S SILVER - Widenmaier has her trained soundly to break promptly out of the starting gate. Earnings per start in dirt sprint races is solid for this pony. MISS SCHILLER - Humber is trying to score with this one by bringing her back so quickly.

Horse Racing picks for Parx race track on Monday, October 17: Hitch up to Wagon Boss

                              12:55 pm Parx (Race 1) – Towson 8/5 (2-star play)

Below par fourth in a $7,500 claiming contest over this course and distance on her penultimate start but made no mistake when a change of tactics saw her make all the running dropped to this level on a sloppy track here earlier this month. Came home half-a-length clear of her 5 rivals that day and while Haleem R Lee’s charge looks the main pace angle here and is selected to overcome a wide draw to complete a double.
                              1:49 pm Parx (Race 3) – Major Cam 3/2 (2-star play)

Placed third in a $10,000 maiden claimer over a mile-and-one-sixteenth at Churchill Downs in May and registered his best effort in two starts since when a length second in a $16,000 maiden claimer at Delaware Park when debuting for handler Jamie Ness last month. The winner that day has gone in again since and dropping in grade he looks capable of providing jockey Frankie Pennington, who boasts a 22% strike-rate (106/480) at this meeting with a winner.
                              3:10 pm Parx (Race 6) – Wagon Boss 8/5 (2-star play)

Put a couple of below par efforts behind him when finishing a neck second over this course and distance in a $5,000 claiming contest last month. Led in the stretch on that occasion and having performed well at a higher level when runner-up in a $10,000 claiming event here 4 starts back Scott Lake’s representative is selected to register a 14th career success receiving weight from most of his rivals here with useful apprentice Jeiron Barbosa booked to ride.
