Spa selections 2022: Saratoga picks August 13
In Spa Selections, our correspondent provides his Saratoga picks for key races on today’s Saratoga card!

Race 4 – Grade II Saratoga Special Stakes

                    1. #2 Damon’s Mound (7-5) – This one will likely remain the second choice and was every bit as dominant as Gulfport last time, although he may need Super Chow to apply early pressure

                    2. #4 Gulfport (4-5) – If this colt by Uncle Mo gets away from the field early and avoids Super Chow, he should win barring a torrid pace, as he has won easily in both starts

                    3. #3 Valenzan Day (12-1) – Didn’t break well last time and had too much ground to make up, but could be one at a nice price to be running late and hit the board with a better break

                    4. #1 Super Chow (8-1) – This one comes off a huge workout and has the early speed to contend with Gulfport, but needs to go an extra furlong and a half this time around

                    Race 9 – Maiden 105k

                    1. #2 Leading Contender (8-1) – Rosario has an impressive winning percentage when riding for Chad Brown, and this colt by Gun Runner looks ready in his debut

                    2. #1 Unlimitedpotential (3-1) – This Pletcher and Repole runner gets Irad Ortiz as a part of an entry, and comes off an impressive work a week ago

                    3. #8 Final Approach (6-1) – Another first timer who starts for D. Wayne Lukas and is hard to pass up purely based off the impressive works including two bullets

                    4. #7 Happy Bob (9-2) – First time lasix and maybe the sharpest of those who have run before, but needs to finish a bit better in the stretch this time to have a chance

                    Race 10 – Grade I Fourstardave Handicap

                    1. #3 Regal Glory (6-5) – Has won all three at Saratoga and is just a step better than these if he runs his best, plus has good versatility which gives him options here

                    2. #1 Casa Creed (5-2) – Maybe not one that will win, but should be closing late even though he probably prefers to go shorter and can get a winning trip with the right pace set-up

                    3. #4 Masan (2-1) – Chad Brown’s other runner who doesn’t quite have the speed figures and class of Regal Glory, but comes off a grade III victory and should get a good stalking trip here

                    4. #5 Get Smokin (8-1) – One that likes to grab the early lead and will likely do so here, but holding leads has been an issue, although he can still hang on to hit the board

                    Race 11 – MC 40000

                    1. #7 Greg’s Honor (3-1) – Loses Rosario but picks up Irad Ortiz, and should be running late especially if there is some early pace if someone presses Smart Joker

                    2. #2 Smart Joker (6-1) – Showed improvement with the switch to turf last time and should be near the early lead, maybe takes another step forward with another turf try

                    3. #9 Calloway Peak (8-1) – Adds blinkers and improved his positioning with the class drop last time out, but can’t be as far back this time and needs to break a bit better here

                    4. #5 Left On Boylston (6-1) – In both tries at this distance, this gelding finished third, but is another who tends to rate and may need pace to aim at

Rocket Picks : Del Mar, Gulfstream Park, and Saratoga for August 13, 2022
                        By: Aaron Halterman

It’s time for another Saturday of racing! For the free pick 4, we will head back to Saratoga for the Late Pick 4 on the card. We will also have full card selections for Del Mar and Churchill Downs for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out.

Below is our free late Pick 4 for Saratoga:

                        Saratoga August 13, 2022

                        Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#1 Portfolio Company drops down in class for this race after taking on stakes runners in his last four starts. He should get the job done in this spot. #11 Daunt will have a big chance in this spot if the pace sets up like it looks like it is going to on paper. His late closing style will be tough to hold off with pace to run at late down the lane.

                        Race 9: Maiden Special Weight
                        freestar

#1 Unlimitedpotential debuts in this spot for Pletcher after a bullet workout on August 6th over this race. He looks ready to roll for this one. #4 For Good should move forward off of his debut race, which saw him run fourth over a muddy track at Belmont Park.

                        Race 10: Fourstardave Handicap (G1)

#3 Regal Glory will take on the boys in this spot after dominating the females all season long. She looks ready for this next challenge, while this race has produce female winners in recent years. #4 Masen has won two straight races; however, this race looks tougher than what he has been facing.

                        Race 11: Maiden Claiming

#3 Good Solider takes a big drop down in class for this race after struggling in two straight maiden special weight events over the turf. #2 Smart Joker was fourth at this level last time out after setting the early pace. He may improve in his second race over the turf today.

                          #13
Canterbury Park Late Pick 3 for Aug. 13
                          Ashley Anderson

Canterbury Park features a quartet of stakes races on Saturday's card, including the $100,000 Minnesota Derby and $100,000 Minnesota Oaks, listed as the seventh and eighth races, respectively, on the nine-race card.

TwinSpires.com will be offering a special all-stakes bet back promotion for Canterbury (Races 2, 3, 7, 8) and will return up to $10 on your win bet if your horse finishes second or third in any of the four stakes.

Below we look at the win contenders for the Minnesota Derby and Oaks, then build a Pick 3 ticket that includes the final race of the evening.
Bet live racing at Canterbury Park
                          Race 7: Minnesota Derby, 1 mile and 70 yards (9:10 p.m. ET)

The first two choices on the morning line, #3 Love the Nest (2-1) and #4 Doctor Oscar (9-5), will be trying a route distance for the first time in this race for three-year-old colts and geldings.

Doctor Oscar beat Love the Nest by a length last out in the six-furlong Victor S. Myers S. on July 16, but trainer David Van Winkle is just a 5% winner with horses making their first start at a route distance, while jockey Chad Lindsay is 4-for-32 racing routes.

Love the Nest's trainer Joel Berndt produces a much higher percentage of winners (23%) running a route for the first time, and he's a 19% winner with horses making their second start off the layoff.

Let's fade the favorite and back Love the Nest, along with Berndt's other runner, #8 Cousvinnysacanuck (10-1). He clocked an 84 Brisnet Speed rating at one mile when winning an allowance at this track on July 17 and will stay with regular rider Luis Fuentes, a 30% winner with route distances.
                          Race 8: Minnesota Oaks, 1 mile and 70 yards (9:40 p.m. ET)

The females tackle one mile, 70 yards in the following race, and a number of runners will be stretching out to a route distance for the first time.

The morning line favorite #8 Brewhouse (3-1) is one such filly, and she'll be looking to maintain her unbeaten record in her first try beyond six furlongs.

One of four runners for McLean Robertson, a 28% winner in non-graded stakes, Brewhouse last won the Frances Genter S. and beat a number of today's race rivals, including three stablemates — #3 It's Her Time (12-1), #6 Honey Bella (12-1), and #11 Gypsy Reward (8-1).

The Tapit granddaughter will retain the services of Nik Goodwin, who's won 38% of races paired up with Robertson.

We'll side with Robertson's top choice on the morning line and also play #5 Lady Clare (10-1), who won last out at a mile in an allowance optional claimer at this track. Two back, she was beaten by a head to #4 Start Singing (8-1), who re-opposes here, and romped to a 10-length win at the same distance three back, posting an 81 BRIS figure in her decisive victory.
                          Race 9: $5,000 claiming, one mile (10:10 p.m. ET)

In the final race on Saturday, #5 Riviera Champ (5-2) is a slight favorite over #7 Shinboro (3-1) after coming home second by 1 3/4 lengths in a one-mile claimer at this track on July 2. Trainer Jonathan Wong is a 29% winner with horses making their second start off the claim and a 25% winner in claiming races. Riviera Champ will also switch to hot jockey Harry Hernandez, who is 7-3-2-0 in the last seven days.

We'll back the morning line favorite alongside the well-related #4 Malibu Channel (9-2), who has been running on turf and will switch to dirt in addition to dropping down two class levels. Trainer Karl Broberg is a 28% winner with horses dropping down two classes and a 21% winner with runners transitioning from turf to dirt. Hot jockey Ry Eikleberry (20% winner this meet) will pick up the mount and has gone 4-for-7 when paired up with Broberg over the last week. Eikleberry's also a 26% winner with routes.

                          $2 Pick 3: 3, 8 / 5, 8 / 4, 5 ($16)

                              #15
LAUREL PARK PICKS AND PONDERINGS: AUGUST 13, 2022
                              John Piassek

                              RACE 1: CLAIMING $8,000, 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 6 FURLONGS

                              2-1-6-5

Ten races on the docket for a picture-perfect Saturday. #4 Bigmancan (9-2) has won two of his last three dirt starts at Penn National, consistently running brisnet figures in the upper-70s. He likes to stalk the pace and pounce and should work out a great trip here. Tyler Conner, who rode him last time, is named on just him. #2 Royal Thunder (9-5) takes a drop in class after a disappointing start against Maryland-bred allowance types last out. His trip was not as troubled as his running line would indicate; he simply didn’t show any of his customary early speed and was well-beaten. He handily beat $12,500 horses two starts back, but now drops even further down the class ladder. His form from earlier this summer would win this going away, but I’m a bit suspicious at low odds based on that last race. The chances of #1 Subject to Change (5-2) depend on what happens with Royal Thunder. Subject to Change was a handy winner three starts back when he went uncontested on the lead, but faded late after getting pressure in his most recent two outings. Royal Thunder is the most likely one to apply pace pressure. If he forces Subject to Change to run early, that one is likely to be in trouble. If Royal Thunder shows little again, however, Subject to Change will have things his own way on the lead.

RACE 2: MAIDEN CLAIMING $20,000, 3, 4, AND 5-YEAR-OLDS, FILLIES AND MARES, 1 MILE (GRASS)

                              10-12-3-6

#10 Block Party (5-1) makes her first start since her debut in May at Tampa Bay Downs. She rallied well from last and got up for fifth, with a figure of 66. She returned to the worktab in mid-July for new trainer Justin Nixon and should improve second time out. #12 Jackie B Good (6-1) closed well for second in her last grass start, finishing behind only Eight Danzas, who won a Pennsylvania-bred allowance race on dirt by open lengths next out. This filly should be at home at this class level. #3 Please Marry Me (4-1) was originally entered in a $30,000 race last Friday, but it was wiped out due to thunderstorms. She has lots of early speed and should encounter minimal pressure on the front end.

From the Spa: August 10 Midlantic-breds in Saratoga stakes
‘From the Spa’ keeps you up to speed with all the Midlantic-breds running in Saratoga stakes this summer.

RACE 3: CLAIMING $10,000 (CONDITIONED), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 6 FURLONGS

                              5-4-6-1

#5 Drive by Layover (6-5) has run at least a 79 in four of his last five starts, and closed well to get second at this condition last out. Will be tough if he runs his race. #6 Remembering Wilbur (7-2) has not missed the board in five starts on this track and drew off to win going away after setting the pace in his last start here in April. He had a brutally wide trip on grass last out but should work out a better trip here. #4 Dolce Vita (5-2) is in improving form and did win a n/w2L race last out, but he was racing on a rail-favoring track. It’s possible he gets another biased strip here, of course, but I wouldn’t count on it.

RACE 4: STARTER OPTIONAL CLAIMING $25,000, 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 1 1/16 MILES (GRASS)

                              9-8-1-6

#9 Boat’s a Rockin (7-5) has been unstoppable this year. Not only has he won two races in a row in gate-to-wire style, he’s won them by a combined 7 1/2 lengths and never looked like he was in danger of losing at any point. He should run away and hide from this field once again. #8 One Two Kid (6-1) overcame a slow pace to get up and win against similar at 18-1 last out. Usually, he’s more forwardly-placed than he was last time, which will work to his advantage in this spot. Jamie Ness has a coupled entry in here; #1 Pretty Good Year (4-1) looks like the better half. He has no early speed, which doesn’t make him a serious threat to Boat’s a Rockin, in my opinion. However, he has great closing speed and has rallied well in his last two races despite getting caught very wide both times. If he can manage to save ground here, he can rally from the rail or close to it and round out the exotics.

RACE 5: CLAIMING $8,000, 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, FILLIES AND MARES, 6 FURLONGS

                              5-1-7-4

This race pits the top three finishers at this condition on July 17, #5 Dat Deres Gold (8-5), #1 Sick Pack Sara (9-5), and #7 Stay Out (5-1) against each other. Dat Deres Gold sat the trip just off the lead and kicked clear to win by two lengths for her second straight win. Sick Pack Sara, who held on for second after setting the pace, is a committed front-runner who will encounter plenty of pace pressure from her outside. It’s possible she sneaks away on the lead, but it’s more likely she’ll get softened up on the lead and Dat Deres Gold will once again be able to get away. Stay Out made mild ground to get third in her third start off the break and looks for further improvement here.

RACE 6: ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL CLAIMING (N/W3X), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 1 1/16 MILES (GRASS)

                              5-7-1-3

A competitive field of six, including three Maryland Million eligibles, will line up in today’s co-feature. #5 Nick Papagiorgio (4-1) got up to win the Find Stakes two races back with an 86, in his second start off a long layoff. Last out in the Prince George’s County Stakes, he proved no match for classier rivals but managed to hold fourth. He should be more at home against these. #7 Summer to Remember (7-2) went gate-to-wire at Delaware Park last out and is a serious threat to wire these. That was just a n/w1x race last time, however, and while he faced some tough fields in New York earlier this year, this will be a class test nonetheless. The trip might have to carry him to victory. #1 Scarlett Sky (5-2) won the Transylvania Stakes at Keeneland last spring, but has missed the board in his four starts since. He hasn’t been seen since the Appleton Stakes this spring, when he bolted to the outside. He has back-class and should be ready to fire a big one for Shug McGaughey.

RACE 7: STARTER OPTIONAL CLAIMING $20,000, 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 6 FURLONGS

                              1-7-2-4

#1 He Hate Me (9-5) never got a breather in his last start at Parx, but nonetheless held off all challenges and won by a neck with a season’s-best figure of 91. He’s been improving with every start this year. #7 Meru (3-1) is also coming off his best race of the year, having earned an 84 after getting a great trip in victory at Monmouth Park last out. He has some of the best late pace figures in the race and will be primed to pack a punch. #2 Yes Sir Robert (9-2) was impressive in victory two races back at Churchill Downs, but showed little after racing wide on the pace in his local debut last out. He gets a jockey switch to Victor Carrasco and will try to work out a better trip, having moved four-wide after breaking from post position two.

RACE 8: CLAIMING $25,000 (N/W2L), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, FILLIES AND MARES, 1 1/16 MILES (GRASS)

                              2-5-3-9

#2 Helluva Lady (3-1) drops to this condition for the first time. She ran a 78 last out against Maryland-bred allowance runners, which was far and away a career-best mark, but she was outclassed and well-beaten. #5 Vodkatini (9-2) exits the same race, and flattened out after a wide trip. In her prior grass start, she was no match for loose leader Cupid’s Strike, who came back to finish second in an open n/w1x allowance. However, Vodaktini held clear of the others and secured a comfortable second. #3 Evangeline Allions (5-2) made a strong move and struck the front in the stretch last out, but flattened out late and got third. Nonetheless, she’s been solid against these types all year long and should at least hang on for a share.

RACE 9: ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL CLAIMING (N/W3X), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 6 FURLONGS

                              4-3-5-1

This race was originally scheduled for last Friday, but it was cancelled due to the aforementioned thunderstorms. Some of the entrants came back, including #4 Eastern Bay (4-1). He’s won twice at this level in his last three starts, though didn’t do quite as well as usual going 5 1/2 furlongs last out. However, stretching back out to six furlongs should help the cause. #3 Alwaysinahurry (7-2) exits the same race as Eastern Bay. He closed well from off the pace and lost by a head to Factor It In, who was making his first start of the year. Alwaysinahurry improved to a 90 in that race, and his usual low-90s figure should be good enough to contend here. #5 Yodel E.A. Who (2-1) has run back-to-back career-best figures and lost a photo finish to Fortheluvofbourbon, a multiple stakes winner and four-time winner this year.

RACE 10: MAIDEN CLAIMING $20,000, 3, 4, AND 5-YEAR-OLDS, FILLIES AND MARES, 1 MILE (GRASS)

                              6-7-10-11

#6 Pensively (3-1) got first jump on a loose leader in her last start at Colonial Downs, and she managed to outkick everyone except favored Golden Effect and held second. Looks primed to get another great stalking trip. #7 Missawlet (4-1) led almost the whole way around last out but got caught late at 33-1. She had showed speed in the past, but that was the first time she held on that long. It was a promising performance. #10 First Lady Di Da (4-1) is coming off a lifetime-best figure of 69, earned when finishing fourth behind Missawlet last out. She struggled in her first two starts off the layoff but is rounding back into form.
