Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    September 20, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
This evening Northfield Park has a 15-race card ready to roll with the $1.00 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11

2-Man Can he Shoot (2-1)-Cashed a 3rd place check in its 1st local start and seemed to flatten out in what was a 152.4 mile. This will be the 2nd start in the Looney barn and comes back in 7-days instead of over 2 weeks. Should be a threat with a smooth trip.
4-Keystone Memphis (9-1)-This 10-year-old cashes checks but is only 1-58 over the past 2 years. The last 2 starts have been better and gets post relief. Davis picked the one above but just in case that 12-year-old isn't dialed on high this gelding should be in the mix at the wire.

    Race 12

1-Stonecold Bluechip (5-1)-Three-year-old came off the bench with 2 straight wins and now bumps up in class. Will respect chances for the upturn to continue with this post draw.
2-Pappy's Legacy (6-1)-The last 2 with Davis Jr. have been good and comes off a sharp win from the 2nd tier. Steps-up but so do a few others and will use at what should be a solid price.
5-Spatacus Bluechip (2-1)-This is a race without a standout and not loving the short price. Merriman steers, drew well but this 3-year-old is only 2 for 32 lifetime. Comes off a 151.4 mile so won't dismiss but will hope for others to provide more value.
6-Pike Rock (5-1)-Has had 3 sharp efforts in a row and should be able to be forwardly placed for Myers. Pet Rock 3-year-old has hit the board in 7 of 9 at NFLD with 2 pictures. Has learned some lessons on the fair circuit and could be ready for a trip to the winner's circle tonight.

    Race 13

2-The Big Picture (7/2)-Has been in good form over the last 3 races and now makes the 1st start for the Farmer barn. Was bet down in last but had an equipment break. Will look for a clean trip and a big try this evening.
3-Victor Hic (2-1)-Tripped out to win from the rail in last. This is another Davis Jr.-Looney combo, and the program chalk looks like a major player.
4-Routhland (5/2)-Makes the 3rd start for the Oliverio barn and is often in the mix but seldom cashes the top check. Merriman should put this Captaintreacherous 3-year-old in play and could look to make one big move down the lane.

    Race 14

6-Pet My Rock (6-1)-Stopped using Lasix about 3 weeks ago and this race isn't loaded with good form. Did close nicely for a change last week, off a rough trip. Slow starter will be steered by Davis Jr., and he has an aggressive style of driving. Looking for an alert start and for this 4-year-old to be in striking range turning for the wire at a good price.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    2,4/1,2,5,6/2,3,4/6
    Total Bet=$24

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #3
#2 Wingspun She moved up a bit when sent around two turns last time out, and she might be able to get a similar type of trip spying the pace today. She may offer a decent price, too.
#4 Mark the Moose He went sort of evenly in the debut run, but it came in a decent race and might set him up for something better this time around. Pedigree says yes to the move around two turns.
#1 Carnivore Blinkers go on for this first start off the claim, and it's always a nice move to see new connections protect their runner off the claim. Needs better, but this isn't the deepest group.
Race Summary Wingspun should get the right kind of trip here, and anything like the 4/1 ML offering would seem playable in a race without a whole lot of depth.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
#6 Cinco de Mandee Forward player couldn't quite stay last time out when facing winners for the first time, and she has been pretty reliable when racing over the local footing.
#2 Bourbon Rebellion She has been toiling at this level for a bit, but maybe she is sitting on something better in this third start off the layoff. Best stuff would do here.
#3 Single Lady Pressing speed should get a perfect, first-over trip with these, but she may not offer a fair price while stepping up to try winners for the first time.
Race Summary Cinco de Mandee might be worth a look at a square price, as Bourbon Rebellion and Single Lady may take more than their share of the action. I'll try to get her in with the logical pair.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#3 Poquito Rose Class riser is worth a look in a race with a handful of forward players, as she is in good form and loves the local footing, and she has some ability to settle and finish here.
#2 Elia Maybe the blinkers coming off will give her a chance to relax just a touch off the pace, but I still wouldn't want too short a price to land here after a couple of losses at short prices.
#4 Don't Make Me Beg Speed has a bit of a rating gear that should serve her well with these, and she proved a good fit when hiking to this level last time out. Underlay?
Race Summary Poquito Rose steps up in good form, and the projected race flow works in her favor, as she can settle off the splits and finish.

        Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

        Indiana Grand - Race #1
#1 Shofar Was fourth in the Caesar's Stakes and drops down to an optional claiming; won two back and can return to top form.
#2 Slick Silver Has good route speed and can get to the front end here; has been with some outstanding rivals and fits here.
#6 Lastchanceatglory Was up for second last out and has been competitive at this level; can be in a good stalking position and should be able to finish well.
Race Summary Shofar has been running vs. good company and has the class to run well at this level; gets the edge in a tough race.
        Indiana Grand - Race #4
#2 Miss Sugarbaker Has been terrific in winning her last two races with plenty to spare; can handle the step up.
#4 Chardana Lost a photo at this level last time out and is yet to win at this distance; can be in the mix from start to finish.
#6 D D Seven Thirty Was an easy winner two back and then closed well for third last out; will be a big late player.
Race Summary Miss Sugarbaker has found her best stride in her last two and can send her winning streak up to three.
        Indiana Grand - Race #8
#6 Flying Samurai Can get a good trip from just off the pace and can be there when if and when the frontrunners fade; in a good spot.
#8 Book of Romeo Ran evenly last time and can have a strong presence in deep stretch.
#4 Moonshine Justice Has good speed and has spent a lot of time on turf; could be tough to catch.
Race Summary Flying Samurai can show a big closing move here and should be difficult to hold off.

Event: (201333) Napoli at (201334) Udinese
          Sport/League: ISAL

          Date/Time: September 20, 2021 2PM EDT
          Play: Napoli -117
Serie A - Napoli at Udinese
Quick Synopsis: We discussed in yesterday's free play that despite being a perfect 3-0 this season that it would be a tough spot for Roma against an 0-3 Verona side and they went on to lose 3-2. It's a different outlook here as this shapes up perfectly for a Napoli squad playing well and laying a short number against a Udinese side that are overachieving here thus far in the season with a couple wins over newly promoted sides and a opening day draw against a struggling Juventus side. Our number has this approximately 53 cents higher at -170 so this is a play based on value and game set up. Best of luck all.
          The play is Napoli -117

Race 8 - Maiden Claiming - 8.3f on the Dirt. Purse: $22000 Class Rating: 60

FOR MAIDENS, TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 118 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $25,000, IF FOR $20,000, ALLOWED 2 LBS.

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 3 STREET HUSTLE 5/2
                # 1A HEARTNESS 9/5
                # 2 NEIGH DUDE 8/1
I think STREET HUSTLE is a quite good choice. Appears to be the type to be helped with second time Lasix here. With Sanchez getting the mount, watch out for this animal. Displays sound Equibase speed figs on average overall when measured up against the rest of this group of horses. HEARTNESS - In the upper half of earnings per start at the distance/surface in this field of horses. In against a much softer bunch than last time out. NEIGH DUDE - With Hiraldo controlling the reins on him, this colt will almost certainly be able to break out sharply in this contest. Well above average win clip at this distance/surface.

                  Thistledown - Race #8 - Post: 4:20pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $9,500 Class Rating: 51

                  Rating:

                  #3 BO RHAPSODY (ML=3/1)
                  #1 CHOCOLATE SOLDIER (ML=7/2)
                  #7 REACHNFORASIXPACK (ML=12/1)

BO RHAPSODY - A pony coming back this rapidly after a good effort is a good signal. Getting a break of 5 lbs from last race at Thistledown. He should make the most of this advantage. CHOCOLATE SOLDIER - Really have to believe this beautiful animal is going to be very close at the finish line. REACHNFORASIXPACK - It looks like Pilares had to be more familiar with this gelding on Aug 24th when riding him for the initial time. Back atop again today. When Pilares and Zielinski unite on horses the return on investment has been fabulous at +57. Was in a $5,000 Maiden Claiming race at Thistledown in the last race. That clash had an Equibase class figure of 57 and he is moving down right here. A certain win candidate.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #2 ONLY ONE WAY BACK (ML=5/2), #5 ANGEL'S SOUPERSTAR (ML=9/2), #4 OUR MAGICAL GIRL (ML=5/1),

ONLY ONE WAY BACK - You always think this horse has a shot to win, but he falls short regularly. Pedestrian speed figure last time out at Thistledown at 5 furlongs. Don't feel this racer will improve too much in today's event. ANGEL'S SOUPERSTAR - Can't wager on this vulnerable equine in today's sprint of 5 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a sprint event of late. OUR MAGICAL GIRL - Not normally the kind of equine one plays off of any kind of long breather.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #3 BO RHAPSODY on the nose if you can get odds of 7/2 or more
                  EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,3,7]

                    Louisiana Downs - Race #8 - Post: 5:47pm - Maiden Special - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $19,000 Class Rating: 64

                    Rating:

                    #2 SCRAPBOOK (ML=6/1)
                    #7 TAPPIN'TIME (ML=6/1)

SCRAPBOOK - The 64 most recent race speed rating looks strong in the TrackMaster PPs. I have to believe Beavin is making a good move here. This filly can only benefit from the shorter distance. Maiden is switching over to the dirt, and may not have liked the turf last out. Has a good chance to be a first time winner. TAPPIN'TIME - A win percent like 30 is fantastic for any jock/trainer tandem. Lozada should be able to place this filly right behind the early speed. Ideally, Lozada will rate behind the leaders, then rally on the turn. The morning line odds on this filly are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of trainer Duhon. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #4 HENNYS GRINNING (ML=9/5), #6 MADISON JOY (ML=7/2), #3 PLUM GOOD (ML=9/2),

HENNYS GRINNING - August 28th is the last time we've seen this filly around. Have to be a little bit leery. Will be hard for this horse to beat this bunch off of that last speed figure. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure close to today's Equibase class figure, so put her on the questionable challengers list. MADISON JOY - A runner should have more early zip at 1 mile to get me going about her winning probability at 6 1/2 furlongs. No races since Dec 5th, probably too long ago to do well this time around. PLUM GOOD - I don't have a positive vibe about this questionable contender in this affair.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #2 SCRAPBOOK on top if we're getting at least 7/5 odds

                      Race 4 - Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $6200 Class Rating: 67

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 124 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $2,500

                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 2 MISTER G. Q. 3/1
                      # 4 LORD VADER 5/1
                      # 6 HIGH SPEED CHASE 9/5
MISTER G. Q. is my choice. Is tough not to consider based on speed figures which have been very good - 56 avg - of late. Has very good front-end speed and will almost certainly fare quite well versus this field. Must be given a chance based on the very good speed rating garnered in the last affair. LORD VADER - Earning some nice paychecks in dirt sprint events. Should go off at a decent number and has some positive angles going for him. HIGH SPEED CHASE - I can't pass on this gelding given one of the top rider and trainer combos on the grounds. Anaya has strong numbers that point to this gelding to be a strong contender.
