Al Cimaglia: Scioto Downs Early Pick 4 Analysis

    May 25, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
Tonight, Scioto Downs has 14-races ready to roll. The 0.50 Early Pick 4 kicks-off the card and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 1

1-Wildfire Flasher (5-1)-Broke in last in ScD season debut and has had issues in the past. But if minds manners should be in the hunt in a wide open affair.
2-Amour Cruiser (6-1)-Only 1-19 lifetime is not a reason to toss versus this field. Will spread in this leg and look for some value in what appears to be an otherwise chalky sequence.
6-Calvin L (5-1)-Winless in 4 tries here but last start at NFLD was an improved effort from the 2nd tier and that's reason enough to use. Plus, did take 4 pictures last year and only #8 had a similar total with 5 wins.
8-Sixby Hanover (3-1)-Shows good gate speed, should be forwardly placed and is fast enough to win. But is 0-7 this year and can't seem to pass anyone down the lane. Maybe the plan will be to get the top and not look back.

    Race 2

3- Imma Bee (1-1)-Drew off in last at .30 on a dollar versus this kind. Unless the trip is brutal or not 100% the same should happen tonight.

    Race 3

4-Just A Passenger (3-1)-Banked over $58k in 2020 and hasn't found the winner's circle in 11 tries this year. This is a soft spot and Tyler Smith has driven before, so will look for a determined effort versus a suspect field.
5-Crews Hilltopper (5/2)-Trevor Smith sticks after a solid effort from post 10 against this kind. Cashed checks versus better and has had success here hitting the board in 20 of 43 starts here. Could leave and has the gate speed to be put in play early.

    Race 4

1-Astroffical (8/5)-Comes off a big try in last from post 10, rejoins the Morgan barn and should be bet hard. Likes to get on the engine and the plan will be to not look back.
4-Rockin Peggy (7/2)-Needed last and now makes 2nd start at ScD this year. Team Tharps entry has taken pictures here and should get a better trip than in last. Could end up in the pocket behind #1 and look to roll by down the lane.

    0.50 Early Pick 4

    1,2,6,8/3/4,5/1,4
    Total Bet=$8

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Parx Racing - Race #7
#1 Recycle The only turf try came with better at Delaware, and it was the best of his three career starts so far. Think he might have some off-the-pace ability in a spot with plenty of pressing types who may not all stick around late.
#5 Makoto He's really logical here with some versatility in his running style, and he should be able to settle just back off the pace and watch everything unfold.
#7 Doctor Doom He makes sense, but I wouldn't be too enthused in the turf debut at anything like the 2/1 ML price. He has faded late in both two-turn tries but does offer some class appeal.
Race Summary Recycle and Makota might end up getting similar trips, but the former should be a better price on the board. The pace may not be wicked, but it also might have a couple players prompting things throughout. Let's see if Recycle can settle, save some ground and finish.
      Parx Racing - Race #8
#2 Shanghai Superfly Same rider named on both halves of the entry, but they did both go in that last one, so you might get the teammate as well. This guy has some finishing ability and brings a bullet work to this one. Reliable runner can be there again.
#6 Fortheluvofbourbon He's the clear one to beat on form, but he'll have to fire a good one off the August layoff while stepping up again. Tough call -- I'd be interested at something like the 5/2 ML but not much shorter.
#7 Ego Man Pressing type has a very mild ability to relax, and that should serve him well from the outside draw. Layoff is a concern, but the trip should be there for the taking.
Race Summary Shanghai Superfly is one of two entered from the Jamie Ness barn, and their complementing styles should work well together if they both run today, and 'Superfly might get the last run with these.
      Parx Racing - Race #10
#1 Zoomer There are several forward players signed on in this spot, but most of them are content pressing the splits. This guy doesn't always fire, but he can run from just about anywhere in the race, so I'm hoping the rail draw will mean a send mission in a race with no other confirmed front-end speed.
#2 Dixie Drawl If the top choice does decide to try for the front end, this one might draw up a really dreamy trip tracking that pace. He has some positional speed and a pretty consistent ability to finish. Right there.
#3 Alwaysmining He's one who may find a spot near the front, but he will need something better than the local debut last out if he's going to land this one.
Race Summary All of the forward players signed on here want to press a little bit, and Zoomer might be best positioned to have a go for it early. He has shown pace in the past and would be a threat on the engine if they go.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Scioto Downs - Race #4
#1 ASTROFFICIAL Won at this level in April, could return quick claim dividend with rail draw.
#8 JERAMAYA 11yo reeled off three consecutive victories at Miami Valley before latest try.
#3 AMERICAN SWEET PEA Put up through DQ two back, troubled trip as fave in follow up.
Race Summary Astrofficial came out at the half-mile marker, waited on live cover that never fully developed and closed willingly while 4-wide. She broke stride as the odds-on favorite at this level two starts ago. Play 1-3 and 1-8 exactas.
        Pocono Downs - Race #2
#3 DOUBLEOFFTHEWALL Fits well on best, figures up-close throughout.
#4 DELIGHTFUL SUMMER Middle move, flattened out as sub 2-1 faves ran 1-2.
#1 LET 'ER BUCK Chased 7-5 winner, passed by 8-5 second choice.
Race Summary Doubleoffthewall, no factor from post 7 in the faster division of a split race, can make good use of her speed with a better post and a return to her prior form out of town. Play a 3-ALL exacta.
        Northfield Park - Race #10
#7 WALKNAFTERMIDNITE Out-dueled 8-to-5 shot for lead, won in same spot.
#3 KNIGHT ON ICE Second from post 8 in split race that timed 1/5 slower.
#5 MILAN BLUE No factor of late, gets major driver change, gets pace to run at.
Race Summary Walknaftermidnite made a strong second-quarter brush, dueled with 8-to-5 pace setter Smile E Coyote to the 3/4-mile mark, cleared on the turn and held on for the upset victory. He remains eligible for the same condition, so let's make him today's Best Bet. Play 7-3 and 7-5 exactas.

          #5
          Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

Will Rogers Downs - Race #5
#5 Tesuque Lost to a photo last out and makes her third start off the claim for Broberg; fits nicely here.
#1 Sheza Hot Flash Won the last time she was on the track and comes off a well-beaten fifth at Lone Star; back in with Oklahoma-breds.
#4 River Liberty Was claimed two back and was sixth in a sprint last out; will improve in her return to a mile.
Race Summary Tesuque can get a perfect trip here and can outfinish her rivals here; solid state-breds.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #6
#6 Princess Asya Set the pace and held on going a mile last time and is back to a sprint; capable of a repeat score.
#5 Gray Sky Mesa Was an easy winner in two of her last three races and has the speed to be a factor throughout.
#3 Flatoutcountry Won two of her last three and is in off an allowance triumph; very good over the strip.
Race Summary Princess Asya has speed and can benefit from turning back off a win at a mile.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #9
#7 Number One Dude Was a winner in all three of his Oklahoma-bred races, including two stakes; hasn't done much in his last two, but his first in the Springboard Mile and the last was in a wide-open allowance at Houston. Big improvement is expected.
#3 Euroexit Won an allowance race two back and gave way in the slop last time; big player is this is over a fast track.
#5 Just Chillin Stretched out after an easy maiden win; should have no problem getting to the lead but could be strongly challenged by the distance in his first two-turn attempt.
Race Summary Number One Dude romped vs. state-breds last fall, could be in a perfect track position and should be able to take command when it counts the most.

                  Belterra Park - Race #6 - Post: 3:00pm - Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $12,900 Class Rating: 83

                  Rating:

                  #10 HOPTOWN HONEY (ML=6/1)
                  #4 SKYVALUE (ML=9/2)

HOPTOWN HONEY - In my opinion, you need 'class' to be successful on the grass. This one has the highest average class figure in the group. The last time I saw this horse was at Turfway Park in a race with a class figure of 98. Dropping a significant amount in Equibase class figure in today's event puts her in a solid position in this event. This jock and conditioner have a lucrative return on investment when they combine forces. Another way to judge class is EPS (earnings per start). This horse has the uppermost in the bunch. I think she'll be close at the finish. SKYVALUE - Strong win percentage this jockey and conditioner tandem have been putting together. Combs drops her down to this level. You don't need too much more from the pp lines to think this horse should be one of the top contenders at this level. Filly has shown some early speed. This shorter trip should be better for her. Forgive the out of the money finish on the off track in the last race. Under better track conditions, has a good chance in this event. A little change in scenery has got to do this animal well. Reading the PPs, it seems like she likes to visit the winner's circle at multiple race tracks.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #7 LAPIS STORM (ML=3/1), #8 HAMPTON SPRING (ML=4/1), #9 CRIMSON RIDE (ML=8/1),

LAPIS STORM - Difficult to take this questionable contender at these odds after the result (fourth) in the last race. This questionable contender will probably need at least one more start after the lackluster showing following the extended time off. HAMPTON SPRING - Very long layoff, then came back and finished fourth. Tough to expect much better in today's event. Don't believe this mount will make a winning move today. That last speed rating was mediocre when compared with today's class figure. CRIMSON RIDE - Campaigner ran a great speed fig last out, but that was on a sloppy track.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - SKYVALUE - Her TrackMaster turf figure is tops among these horses. This filly deserves your wager.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #10 HOPTOWN HONEY is going to be the play if we are getting 5/2 or better

                    # 9 MY BOY LOLLIPOP 8/1
SHINNY looks to be a respectable contender. Diodoro has this gelding racing well and is a quite good choice based on the formidable speed figs recorded in sprint races lately. Could beat this group given the 96 speed figure garnered in his last outing. He has a quite good distance/surface win record - 1 for 3. I'M AN EIGHT - With a solid 85 average speed rating at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. This gelding obviously likes the distance, going 2 out of 5 in his races recently. MY BOY LOLLIPOP - Ought to come out strong - I have liked the way this gelding has moved promptly to the lead recently. Has to be given a chance - I like the numbers from the last race.

I have to support PENTIMENTO here particularly if the morning line of 8/1 holds. Has a strong record at the distance and surface, which makes me have to consider this gelding. CLOSE THE CASE - Looks very strong versus this group of horses and will probably be one of the early speedsters. Should be given a chance based on the decent speed figure recorded in the last contest. CACAHUETE - Expect a much improved outing with the drop. Decent selection to take this race going in a dirt route.

                        Parx Racing - Race #7 - Post: 3:37pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $26,000 Class Rating: 71

                        Rating:

                        #3 READY REWARD (ML=6/1)

                        #2 CHARLIES SAFARI (ML=9/2)

READY REWARD - I know he'll be way back, but he's got a fabulous kick coming home. Have to give this horse a good look. In recent races, has posted the best speed ratings on the turf at this distance. Ran a lackluster race at Middleburg last time out. Racing on a fast track puts this gelding at the top of my contenders list. DOCTOR DOOM - Trainer Vega moves this thoroughbred to a lower class rank to face a less competitive field. Look for a good race in here. Another way to assign class is earnings per race. This mount has the highest in the field. I think he'll be close at the finish line. CHARLIES SAFARI - I am keen on that most recent race on May 11th at Parx Racing where he ran second. When this jockey and handler are put together you have to take a look. Gilardo and Coletti have been fantastic together. Finished runner up, but easily runner-up over the third horse. Those types usually run well next time out. When a thoroughbred drops at least 5 pounds (like this one is), you must take notice. It may not seem like much, but this should help.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #5 MAKOTO (ML=3/1), #8 DENNARD (ML=5/1), #1 RECYCLE (ML=6/1),

MAKOTO - This gelding recorded a speed rating in his last clash which probably isn't good enough in today's race.

Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro is much better and should we this game very easily. They do already have they group won and will likely be rotated here with Serie A kicking off week 1 this upcoming weekend, but they are plenty deep to still win this by multiple goals.
A team from Brazil or Argentina has won this competition in 11 of the last 12 years and I think we will see the class of the Brazilian league over a much weaker Venezuelan league here in this game as we did in the first meeting. That game was the only game Atletico did not win in this group as they sit 4-1-0 with a 13:3 goal differential. However, despite drawing that game 1-1 in Venezuela, they dominated the game with 71% possession and generated 29 shots, nine of them on goal, compared to just nine total shots and six on goal for La Guaira.
La Guaira have scored just two goals in five games in this group and I simply don't see them getting on the scoreboard here.

Both teams have subpar bullpens as Los Angeles relievers are ranked 25th in the league in ERA (4.96), 27th in FIP (4.94), and 2nd in HR/9 rate (1.56). Texas relievers lack overpowering stuff (9.0 K/9, 22nd) and rank 17th in WAR (0.8). Los Angeles starter Andrew Heaney toes the rubber with a 5.31 ERA and 4.25 FIP, together with an alarming 1.85 H/9 rate and a 36.6% hard contact rate. Heaney is 2-5 with a career 5.17 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in thirteen career starts against the Rangers.
From a technical standpoint, the Angels are 21-5-1 OVER in their last 27 home games versus left-handed starters and 25-8-2 OVER in their last 35 home games versus teams with a losing record. Finally, the Angels are 13-0 OVER since September 28, 2019 at home following a game in which they had more strikeouts than hits. Take the OVER as Oskeim Sports' Free Pick Winner for Tuesday, May 25.
