Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

    November 27, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia
The Meadowlands has a Black Friday 13-race card set to go this evening. The 0.50 Early Pick 4 begins in Race 6. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 6

1-Spectre (5-1)-Comes off a win and now bumps up but hasn't raced since 11/13. Has won before when skipping a start and Dunn sticks. Using instead of the two program chalks that have post 10 and 8.
4-Silvermass Volo (9/2)-McCarthy steers and that won't hurt. In from PcD and hasn't won all year but for the most part has been facing better. It's not easy to read this race, but if the 7 and 10 get out the gate without going off stride there should be a lively pace. That could work well for this 8-year-old because he likes to roll late.

    Race 7

4-Questichap (5-1)-Shows a break on 11/20 at Phl and has raced from the back in the last 2 starts here without any issues. Trotted the 2nd half in 55.1 and could be ready for a more aggressive drive. Has been a winner in 3 of 5 at the Big M and will look for a big try tonight.
5-Cover Girl (3-1)-Makes 2nd start in the Takter barn and 1st on Lasix. Just missed last week as a 3/2 choice and Gingras should put in play early.
6-Beyond Ordinary (7/2)-Merlander trainee is often in the hunt but is only 3 for 26 lifetime and has 1 win in 6 tries here. But has been competitive in Big M races and might be meeting a beatable field.

    Race 8

3-Exotic Dancer (7/2)-Dave Miller opts to drive #8 an Alagna pupil and Dunn takes a spin. Not concerned about the driver change and Jen B trainee has grinded out 9 wins in 22 starts this year. Barn can keep them good for a while and this mare won last week at this class.
4-Arnie's Angel (6-1)-This is a game mare but is slow off the gate and trip dependent. There is some speed inside and the 8 should be leaving as well. This race may set up for a closer.
8-Odds On Naples (3-1)-This will be only the 4th start this year, not sure why but there have been issues. Has qualified 4 times at the Big M since 9/19 including 2 times this month with the last timed in 152.3 with a 28 second last quarter. Looking for an aggressive steer and is a threat if fires hot of the bench.
9-Alkippe (9/2)-Had the 1-hole on 11/13 and came 2nd after a tough trip. Usually races off cover so could find a trip from out here and is another who can benefit from fast fractions.

    Race 9

1-Justlikehim (6-1)-Not sure leaving from the rail helps but usually finds a way to be in the mix at the wire. The barn has been doing well in the past 30 days. Using in a race without a standout and will play against the morning line chalk #4.
5-Henderson Seelster (7/2)-Often works in Philly but has 4 wins in 21 starts in East Rutherford. Andy Miller knows well and will likely try to get on the engine. There isn't much gate speed in this race and could be one soft quarter from picture time.
9-Fashion Creditor (9/2)-Zeron gets the drive this evening and will bank on him getting a close-up seat. Did leave last week from post 10 to get the point and faded down the lane. Not the kind of post relief you would hope but this is a better starting spot. Has been facing tougher and Big M record is good. Beware, if can be put in striking range.

    0.50 Early Pick 4

      Jeff Siegel's National Best Plays - 11/27/20

      November 27, 2020
Jeff Siegel’s Best Plays for Friday, November 27, 2020

Aqueduct Race 5 – Post Time: 1:46 ET
      4 – Basquiat (4-1)

Though he could only manage to finish second as the even money favorite in a recent allowance race to subsequent stakes winner Ever Dangerous, this son of American Pharoah ran well enough in defeat to indicate he can make amends in this listed stakes race restricted to 3-year-olds. In a race that probably will be slowly run early, the C. Brown-trained colt needs to be allowed to show his natural speed (he wasn’t last time) and if ridden with more aggression today he should be able to show his best stuff. At 4-1 on the morning line he's worth a gamble.

      *

Aqueduct Eighth Race – Post Time: 3:15 ET
      5 – Thankful (4-1)

Improving with every start, this daughter of American Pharoah faces her stiffest task to date in this year’s renewal of the Comely S.-G3 over nine furlongs but if she continues to improve she could easily be up to the task. Most recently the T. Pletcher-trained filly captured a first-level allowance race in late September with a career top speed figure and then was scratched as a main-track only entrant in the Winter Memories S. on turf two weeks ago. With proven winning form over this distance and a healthy series of recent works, she offers wagering value at or near her morning line of 4-1.

      *

Del Mar Seventh Race – Post Time: 3:30 PT
      4- Say the Word (5-1)

Appears to have found his niche as a turf marathoner after registering a career top victory in the 12-furlong Northern Dancer S.-G1 at Woodbine last month and arrives for his California debut in peak form for new trainer P. D’Amato. The long-winded son of More Than Ready has appeared very sharp in a pair of local breezes, picks up F. Prat, and with a little help up front should be capable of proving superior when the pressure is turned on from the quarter pole to the wire. In a contentious edition of the Hollywood Turf Cup-G1, the veteran gelding looks appealing at 6-1 on the morning line.

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Laurel Park - Race #2
#8 Flight Map Showed the way early before fading in that last one, and the winner came back to just miss with allowance company. Can't imagine we're getting the 8/1 ML price.
#4 Shackqueenking Chased throughout in the slop in the debut run, and there's little reason to think he can't handle the added ground at this trip. Probably the one to beat, but I can't imagine taking the 7/5 ML offering.
#2 Street Ruckus Took plenty of action as the 8/5 chalk in the debut run, but he only went evenly that day and will return now with blinkers for this second trip to post. Chance.
Race Summary Flight Map comes out of a race won by a longshot who validated that form when rising to face winners, and this guy should find himself right up on the splits again from the wide draw.
        Laurel Park - Race #4
#5 Joycee Haz Pizzaz Has landed a trio of runner-up efforts in recent starts, and he should be able to handle the added ground going a mile today. Second choice with a big chance.
#6 Super Dancer The clear one to beat off the last couple of runs, but he has had eight chances and is now coming off a pair of career-best efforts. There's a real chance for regression here at a short price.
#7 Aliferous Didn't show up at all when facing easier last time out, but if he's able to get back to something like the two-back run, that'd be good enough to keep him in the mix with these.
Race Summary Joycee Haz Pizzaz should be able to find a good spot near the top while trying a mile today, and he seems less risky in this spot than the likely chalk, Super Dancer.
        Laurel Park - Race #7
#4 Kiss the Girl Hasn't really realized the early career potential, but she has a little upside in this second start off the layoff, and the price should be right to give her a chance here.
#1 Queen of Tomorrow Reliable type is a good fit with these, but I'd want every bit of the 5/2 ML offering to think about this one with a potentially tricky rail trip waiting for her.
#8 Judi Blue Eyes Tactical type steps up off a nice score at Parx last out, but she'll need every bit of that big effort right back if she's going to hang with these. Might be a bit short on the board at the 5/1 ML price.
Race Summary Kiss the Girl has been in with some pretty good groups throughout her career, and perhaps a second straight go in allowance company off the layoff will allow her to show her best today

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          The Meadows - Race #2
#4 YOU SAID IT Parked long way two back, can stalk and pounce in ideal spot.
#1 JUMPIN JAKE FLASH Finished distant second to 9-5 runaway after :27.3 third quarter.
#3 TOWNSLIGHT HANOVER Could take some catching with Palone and favorable post switch.
Race Summary You Said It drew away to an upset win three starts ago, then was flushed out before the half and grinded first-over in an unsuccessful follow-up try. He could be forwardly placed in this field and should surpass $100,000 earnings mark.
          Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #3
#4 POWERFUL CHRIS Set pace, failed at odds-on in confidence-building spot.
#8 SPRINGBRIDGEVISION Overpowered top one from same post, knows how to win.
#3 WINDSONGMAGNIFIQUE Rallied into fast pace to finish second at notch below.
Race Summary Powerful Chris, yet to recapture her 3yo form, controlled the pace on the drop to this level but settled for second best as the odds-on favorite. Give her another chance with new pilot in bike. Play 4-3 and 4-8 exactas.
          Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #5
#1 BETTER BE DONNA N Fast pace, hard duel took its toll on late bet-down, moves outside in.
#2 JIMBELINA In good form cycle, double-digit odds will cease in bid for 24th win.
#4 LADY ROCKNROLLA A Ultra-consistent form produced pair of seconds at this level recently.
Race Summary Better Be Donna N worked to clear in :26.3, dueled hard with a 13-1 shot to the half, then held okay in the pocket until mid-stretch as the beaten favorite. She can control the pace from the rail and is today’s Best Bet.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

Gulfstream Park West - Race #4
#2 Choose Joy Fleet filly has won two of three career starts and her only dud was off an 11-month layoff; was very sharp in her second back and there's no reason to believe she can't come up big again going two turns.
#3 Itsmyluckycharm Has come up employ lately in trying three on the turf but the only dirt races on her form showed wins; can get back to good form under Lopez.
#4 Dream Marie Was fifth in the G2 Black Eyed Susan and most recently was a non-threatening second in a similar race as this last time out. Poses a late threat.
Race Summary Choose Joy faces tough company but she's shown gameness and is ready to take on any; should be able to stretch out.
Gulfstream Park West - Race #8
#4 Worth Avenue Was fourth at a higher level last time and should be able to improve on the drop; tough mare fits well here.
#3 Ima Daredevil Was an easy winner vs. N3L company and has taken three of six starts overall; has enough speed to stay close and has a kick to be a big factor in the stretch.
#1 Bahamian Girl Has excellent speed, can benefit from the inside post and could be difficult to catch.
Race Summary Worth Avenue has been against better than this and can get back to her good finish going 6.5 furlongs.
Gulfstream Park West - Race #9
#2 Henry's World Has shown speed from the outside in his last three and gets a boost here from an inside post; can be in front and with the good trip should be able to dig in.
#4 Balistico Has the ability to operate with the lead and could benefit from stalking a rapid pace.
#7 Kantharos' Image Just missed off a 11-month layoff and can be tough in his second back; a threat at this level.
Race Summary Henry's World is very rapid and recently has had wide trips; can be sharp with this ground-saving journey.

                      # 7 BEAUTIFUL GAME 10/1
LOCK ON has a formidable shot to take this outing especially at 12/1. With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Haldar will probably have this gelding in excellent position to win the competition. Had one of the top speed figures of this group of horses in this race in his last race. May best this group here, showing very strong figs of late. DISTORTEDATTHEBAR - The big drop in class can only aid this horse today. Has very good Equibase Class Figures relative to this group of animals - worth a look. BEAUTIFUL GAME - Is worth careful consideration and may be a bet - strong Speed Figures (77 average) at today's distance and surface recently. This equine has a terrific winning percentage in dirt sprints.

                        Charles Town - Race #5 - Post: 9:02pm - Claiming - 4.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,000 Class Rating: 69

                        Rating:

                        #6 UNCANNY (ML=5/1)
                        #1 INTRACTABLE (ML=8/1)

UNCANNY - I'm expecting this fine animal to run a strong race in today's event. INTRACTABLE - The jock/conditioner duo of Ho and Magill has a strong ROI together.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 BARBSGRAY LION (ML=2/1), #8 WIGGLE IT JIGGLEIT (ML=5/2), #2 PRINCESS JANET (ML=8/1),

BARBSGRAY LION - Hasn't raced or had any morning drills since Oct 23rd. Not much value on this favorite. WIGGLE IT JIGGLEIT - Finished seventh last time. Would have to improve to hit the board in today's event. Don't believe this horse will make a winning move in today's race. That last speed rating was run-of-the-mill when compared with today's class figure. PRINCESS JANET - Unlikely for this horse to make an impact with no recent success in a sprint race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #6 UNCANNY to win if you can get odds of 5/2 or more

Cross Country Pick Four - Race #1 - Post: 1:46pm - Stakes - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $100,000 Class Rating: 104 Gio Ponti S. AQU

                          Rating:

                          #2 AJOURNEYTOFREEDOM (ML=6/1)
                          #8 VANZZY (ML=12/1)
                          #6 PRICE TALK (ML=9/2)
                          #11 BODECREAM (ML=5/1)
                          #4 BASQUIAT (ML=4/1)

AJOURNEYTOFREEDOM - This mount obviously likes the conditions for today's race. Has garnered the highest Equibase speed figure on the turf at the distance/surface. Maker is strong in grass routes. This animal should have no allowances if he doesn't win. Entered the Bryan Station at Keeneland last race out and raced on the soft turf finishing fifth. Will most certainly do better in today's race. Last raced at Keeneland with a poor post. I swiped some data from The Brain, and his computer says the inside should be a big help to this one today. VANZZY - When I handicap a race on the grass, I think sometimes class ratings are more important than speed figs. This thoroughbred has the highest average class in the entire group. This thoroughbred has shown the capability to win at different racing venues. Making the move from Woodbine for today's event, I have to believe he's ready to run. PRICE TALK - Using this rider/trainer combination is a good choice. Horses out of the barn of Abreu have been solid on the grass. Should do well today. BODECREAM - Comparing how the horses in this field have fared under similar conditions, I see this animal has the highest Equibase speed figure for the distance and surface. Had a solid closing move last time out, running the last quarter in less than 25 seconds. A similar performance today, and it's straight to the winner's circle. BASQUIAT - This trainer brings horses to the grass in shape and ready to win, winning over 20 percent of the time under similar conditions. In my opinion, you need 'class' to be successful on the turf. This one has the highest average class rating in the bunch.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #10 CITY MAN (ML=6/1), #12 RECONVENE (ML=6/1),

CITY MAN - Has tasted defeat as the public's choice twice. A repeat is probably in store. RECONVENE - Acquired his best rating last time around the track, but the track conditions may have played a major role in the outcome.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - AJOURNEYTOFREEDOM - Last time is deceiving, better than it looked. Will give a strong performance this time out.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #2 AJOURNEYTOFREEDOM on top if we're getting at least 6/1 odds

SATURNCLOUD has a quite good shot to take this race. Has performed soundly lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 80 avg speed figure. Reason to like this mare as she has in the saddle one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. Has formidable early speed and will probably fare admirably against this group of animals. JUPITER S. - With a nice Equibase class figure average of 84, has one of the strongest class advantages in this group. She has been running soundly and the Equibase Speed Figs are among the strongest in this group. BELLIGERENT - Has performed solidly lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 66 avg Equibase speed fig. She has a good opportunity for this race as trainer, Uranga, has very solid win clip with horses going this distance.
