Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Late Pick 4 Analysis

    September 18, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia
The Meadowlands has a competitive 13-race card ready to go this evening. There will be two carryovers which bettors will focus on and both should lead to large pools. One is in the 0.20 Late Pick 5 and the other is in the 0.50 Late Pick 4. My focus will be on the Late Pick 4 which begins in Race 10 and it has a $38,390 carryover.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 10

6-Aquaman Hanover (10-1)-Looking for a price to kick things off with #9 coming off a break at PcD. Loses Dunn who picks Takter's #9. But Todd McCarthy can put in play and with an advantageous trip could surprise at a big price.
8-Summa Cum Laude (3-1)-Won here on 7/31 from the 7-hole in gate to wire fashion in 151.4. Dave Miller takes a seat and he will steer the only one in this field to record a win at the Big M.
9-Always A Miki (5/2)-Dunn sticks here and made a costly miscue in the Pass final on 9/5. Best to not overlook this Takter trainee but Dunn will need a to work a smooth trip.

    Race 11

3-Fifty Cent Piece (8-1)-Has 2 Big M starts, both were from the 9-hole and showed good gate speed to finish 2nd each time. This is a bigger test but has a post edge over the 2 program chalks. Could trip out and best to consider at this price.
6-Kings County (8-1)-Started 3 times at Plainridge Park as an odds-on chalk and broke in the last 2 starts. 1st time Todd McCarthy which also adds to the risk, but this race is a head scratcher. 4-year-old has the speed to beat this crew and will use at this price. Has hit the board 3 times with a win here and shows no breaks at the Big M.
7-Thunder (3-1)-Broke on 8/20, then on 9/5 qualified with hopples in 153.1 and missed beating Ramona Hill by a neck. Conway Hall 4-year-old has big speed and can take a picture if minds manners.
9-HL Revadon (10-1)-The post makes the price and is super consistent at the Big M, has 3 wins in 13 starts and has only been off the board once. Mark Mac needs a big-time steer and some luck but here is another price shot worth using.

    Race 12

1-Heart Of Mine (5/2)-This filly is too good to leave out from the rail but is only 1-6 lifetime. Makes her Big M debut and should be bet hard.
4-Think Of Galaxies (5-1)-Returns to a 1-mile oval and might be sitting on a big try. Was hung out to dry at YR last week and could be overlooked at the windows tonight. Has the gate speed to be on the point or in the 2-hole, best to respect.
6-Fire Start Hanover (3-1)-Will probably be fine on the big track, if doesn't work too hard to get the top. Maybe Dunn takes back as there is some speed inside. Should be a major player but not sure how the trip will work out and may not offer any value.

    Race 13

2-Gamblin Mo (6-1)-Has only 1 win in 7 starts but has faced some very tough company. This colt has the motor to roll by late and should be a square price. If the pace is solid a picture could be in the cards as long as Callahan can put into striking range.
4-Crunch Hanover (7/2)-Crunch might be the fastest colt in the field and has the gate speed to control the race. Should have a good shot to cash the biggest check but has never raced on a larger oval.

    0.50 Late Pick 4

    6,8,9/3,6,7,9/1,4,6/2,4
    Total Bet=$36

Jeff Siegel's National Best Plays - Friday, Sept. 18, 2020

      September 18, 2020
Jeff Siegel’s National Best Plays for Friday, September 18, 2020

Belmont Park – First Race. Post time: 1:00 ET
      1 – Zainalarab (8/5)

Diminutive daughter of War Front was a $1 million Keeneland yearling purchase and makes her debut in this six furlong sprint that ushers in the fall Belmont Park season. She’s done everything asked in the morning for a barn that hits at a strong 21% with first-timers while displaying excellent quickness, so we’re expecting a winning effort first crack out of the box from this War Front filly out of Monmouth Oaks winner Delightful Joy. At 8/5 on the morning line we can use her in the win pool and as a rolling exotic single.
      *

Belmont Park – Sixth Race. Post time: 3:36 ET
      6-Lowcountry (8-1)

Here’s a good price chance in this maiden special weight juvenile filly turf miler. This Frosted filly from the Grade-2 placed Lemon Drop Kid mare Kiawah Cat has done all of her preparation at Fair Hill training center, and based on her consistently good workout times she may have enough ability to spring a surprise in this wide open affair. The M. Stidham barn has solid stats with first-timers, and the barn’s go-to rider K. Carmouche takes the call, so let’s try the Godolphin homebred at or near her morning line of 8-1.
      *

Golden Gate Fields – Seventh Race. Post time: 4:15 PT
      5-Scherzo (5/2)

English-bred filly makes her U.S. debut after a couple of promising all-weather runs overseas, and if she duplicates either one of those efforts today the daughter of Golden Horn should earn her diploma in this one mile grass affair for distaffers. She gets Lasix and high-percentage jockey K. Frey following a relatively brief work tab that indicates the M. Padilla-trained sophomore arrived in the Bay Area fit and ready. The barn does very well with these types of imports, so at 5/2 on the morning line she should be able to outclass the competition.

Weekly Bankroll Builder: September 18 Gulfstream Park Late Pk4

        September 16, 2020 | By Brian Nadeau
With the Stronach 5 potentially canceled this week due to the wildfires in California, let’s focus our attention at Gulfstream Park and look at Friday’s late Pk4(R6-R9), which looks like the perfect example of the “less is more” play that you might be able to hit several times.

*** Please take note that this analysis is done upwards of 48 hours in advance, so obviously weather, track conditions and especially late scratches can and will have an effect. Please check back around 4pm Friday for an update. ***

        Race 6: 2yof MSW at 6 furlongs

A modest group of juveniles means #5 SPEEDING (5-2) is going to be tough to beat, as she was a close 3rd on debut on the turf when bet to 9-5, is bred to love the main (Into Mischief out of a Tapit mare), and has a big experience edge over what looks like her main rival. And that brings us to #10 GLADYS (7-2), who is a full-sister to the immortal Rachel Alexandra and has some decent works for her debut, though note her dam Lotta Kim is now 19 and hasn’t really produced anyone else of consequence, so you might want to tab the tote on this one (as with any of the other firsters).

Pk4 A horses: 5,10 (listed in order of preference)

Barboza isn’t really known for his debut runners but he’s a decent enough 13%, so #6 STRONG AZTECA (5-1) is worth a look off a slew of works, and with main Zayas (40% here for the barn) riding. Let’s also use #9 PENS STREET (15-1), who has a quartet of sharp works for Crichton, who is a solid 17% on debut, and this outside attack post helps too.

        Pk4 B horses: 6,9

        Potential B add-ins: #7 Make a Scene (12-1), #4 Najwa (8-1), #2 Toolegittoquit (12-1), and #8 Mastering Bella (6-1)

        Race 7: 3up AOC (25k/N1X) at 5 furlongs (turf)

If there’s a spread race in the sequence this is it, as several have shown enough firepower to be a player on their best day. With that being said, I’ll go with the class and price of #2 IKEISGREAT (8-1), who has been at CD and Kee on the turf and run well, and should like this summer GP group a lot better. Clearly the horse to beat is #9 FULLY LOADED (5-2), who shows two very fast wins since the Sanchez claim and drew the perfect outside attack post for his pressing style. You get upside and a price with #1 GETTHE MUNY BERNIE (9-2) and heavy speed with #5 GO GONE GONE (7-2), so let’s use them on the top line as well.

        Pk4 A horses: 2,9,1,5

I’m a bit against the fast 8/16 race that #6 SOLDOLLIE (8-1) and #7 SUBLIE APPEAL (5-1), as both might regress off what were out of the ordinary runs, and don’t have a lot of speed either. The cutback might be too sharp for #10 JOYFUL HEART (6-1), but he has some back class and has been running well, so he’s worth inclusion too.

        Pk4 B horses: 6,7,10

        Potential B add-ins: NONE

        Race 8: 3up 6.25k claimer at 6 furlongs

It looks like Barboza has #5 JAMAICAN (3-1) after a fast chasing 2nd at the level last time, and a repeat would make him tough from close range. If he doesn’t get it done then #3 STARSHIP APOLLO (5-2) is next in line, as he was just a head back last time, will be closing, and might like the extra half-furlong a bit more.

        Pk4 A horses: 5,3

The secondary contenders seem a cut below, though #2 STAR JUANCHO (6-1) would be a player off his last dirt run, which came against better, while #1 KAREN’S COVE (5-1) wasn’t too far behind the top pair last time.

        Pk4 B horses: 2,1

        Potential B add-ins: #9 Spa Jazz (15-1)

        Race 9: 2yof 40k MCL at 1-mile (turf)

The finale looks like easy pickings for #3 YAKA (2-1), who was 2nd, beaten just a neck, in an MSW last time and meets a terribly weak crew (on paper) while taking the biggest drop in racing.

        Pk4 A horses: 3

There are two firsters who you have to use, as neither #6 SILVER SKY SMOOTH (5-1) or #11 MS. MELANIA (4-1) will have to be stars to have a say, though the former has some slow works, and the latter drew terribly, which is why they are on the second line. The experience of #8 LEARNT (15-1) makes her worth a look, and that debut 5th at the level wasn’t that bad, in a race about as fast as Yaka’s on figures.

        Pk4 B horses: 6,11,8

        Potential B add-ins: NONE

        The tickets:

        Main Ticket: 5,10 with 2,9,1,5 with 5,3 with 3 = $8 (play multiple times)
        Leg 1 B Backup: 6,9 with 2,9,1,5 with 5,3 with 3 = $8
        Leg 2 B Backup: 5,10 with 6,7,10 with 5,3 with 3 = $6
        Leg 3 B Backup: 5,10 with 2,9,1,5 with 2,1 with 3 = $8
        Leg 4 B Backup: 5,10 with 2,9,1,5 with 5,3 with 6,11,8 = $12

          #5
          Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

          Belmont Park - Race #1
#3 Jade Empress Mott miss chased and was a close 2nd on debut, for a barn that rarely cranks them, did well to draw outside the two firsters, who will be her main rivals, adds blinkers, and should only improve off that tightener; look out.
#1 Zainalarab Stiff ML favorite will be bet hard for Brown, as she cost $1 million as a yearling, but the rail is no bargain for a 2yo on debut, and she might want a bit more ground before showing her best as well; trying to beat at underlaid odds.
#2 Exact Pletcher firster goes for a prolific 2yo debut barn but note this gal cost only 82k, so the expectations might be a bit more modest, though that 9/12 bullet best-of-76 says she seems to be able to run, and has some speed; playable.
Race Summary The experience edge the 3 owns on the 1 and 2 is a big one, plus she's drawn outside, and figures to move forward in a big way off her debut, so play her to win and place, while getting some added value by using her to kick off the early Pk5, as the betting public might stick with the two firsters from the big barns, which means a win by the pick would knock a lot of tickets out right off the bat.
          Belmont Park - Race #4
#5 Petit Fills Newcomer runs on dirt for the first time and goes off the Lawrence claim after a meek Spa turf 7th, but he's got some Euro class, and will run all day; upset special.
#4 Rocketry The heavy favorite is the class and wins this with his best, though he enters off eight straight losses, and it's fair to say he's lost a bit on his fastball; backwheel time.
#1 You're to Blame Logical contender is another who has seen better days but owns a lot of class, and his losing streak is at nine, so he's worth trying to beat too; using underneath only.
Race Summary You just can't play the 1 or 4 at the short prices off 17 straight losses, even if they are still the two to beat, but the 5 has some reasons to think he's going to run well here, and the price will be right to find out too, so play him to win, and use him in the early Pk5/Pk4 as well, since budget players won't be on him at all, which means a win over the two heavy favorites would add plenty of value to both sequences.
          Belmont Park - Race #8
#7 Prairie Fire Stretch runner didn't break and was further back than normal at the Spa, so the blinkers will help with the early focus, and his prior runs were strong too, so in a race loaded with early speed, she looks primed for the back; mows them all down in the lane.
#3 Good Credence Versatile sort stalked early and beat the pick last time quite comfortably last time, and she'll get first run again today, but there's so much heat early on here that chasing and lasting will still be a big ask, at what figures underlaid odds as well; second-best.
#6 Fierce Lady Speedster found a rating gear last time, and she had plenty of trouble too, while finishing well ahead of the pick, so if she can settle again she'll be tough, though her style has always been to be involved early, which would be doom late today; mixed signals.
Race Summary Pace makes the race and this one is loaded with early speed, which will really hurt the chances of some of the favorites, while really helping those of the pick, so give her a look in all the slots, and especially the late Pk5/Pk4 as well, since she'll be a square price, and a win would go a long way in spicing up both sequences, especially off such a dud last time.

            #6
            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

            Laurel Park - Race #5
#1 Confectioner Tactical type finished up nicely in the only career turf try, and he has been sitting closer in the three starts since then with blinkers on. Think he's the right one.
#10 Straitouta Congtin Tough to love the 13-start maiden, but his recent form is reliable enough and fits for an underneath piece with this group.
#4 Hinting Races as a gelding with blinkers on for the first time, and he owns a pretty good turf run from his career debut.
Race Summary Confectioner would be plenty attractive at anything like the 9/2 ML offering, as he should be in line for a really nice, tactical trip.
            Laurel Park - Race #8
#3 Payntdembluesaway She's a neck away from being a perfect 5-for-5 sprinting on the lawn, and she'll be in line for an excellent trip from close range. Tough at a short price.
#7 Little Skiff Best stuff might be good enough to land an underneath piece in this spot, but her form is on the spotty side.
#1 Di Tries the turf for the first time with some decent running lines in tow. Her last was solid at Monmouth, and she has the tactical pace to work out a trip from the inside.
Race Summary Payntdembluesaway owns recent running lines that would almost surely handle these, and she has fired fresh off the layoff before.
            Laurel Park - Race #9
#9 Devotion in Motion Pace tends to give way late, but there isn't much other speed in here for him to deal with in the early going. He seems faster than the guy drawn outside of him, so this one may be on the engine.
#10 To the Front He owns a bit of a rating gear, so he's likely to press the top choice out of the gate. Cat and mouse kind of trip with the top choice?
#1 Mister Frank's Way Not much for this guy to write home about in 2020, but he's trying a turf sprint for the first time, and he might like the abbreviated trip on the lawn.
Race Summary Devotion in Motion and To the Front should find themselves right on the lead, and the former should offer a better number on the board while having a bit better early pace.

              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              Harrah's Philadelphia - Race #1
#3 HAMMER CREEK Holds tactical advantage in pace-less race, switches pilots again.
#8 PICTURE THIS Has enough speed to get early position and make gimmick wagers pay.
#2 SODA PUMP Finished ahead of ‘Hammer,’ moves outside in.
Race Summary Hammer Creek failed to sustain a first-over bid after a :57.3 middle half against several of the same rivals he meets today. He figures up close in a field that lacks speed, so let’s make him today’s Best Bet.
              Meadowlands - Race #1
#8 LEAR SEELSTER Seeks re-run of monster close to win in amateur drivers’ race.
#3 SCIROCCO MISTYSAID Pair of thirds at Big M in July, no threat in fast out-of-town races.
#6 FOREVER WORTH IT Rallied for a win and two seconds in last four, gets right set-up.
Race Summary Lear Seelster closed with a mid-track flourish to win going away from post 10 at 32-1 odds. He should get more pace to run at with a few new shooters in the field. Play an 8 with 3, 6 with ALL trifecta.
              Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #1
#3 J P OSCAR Could return quick claim dividend in three-peat attempt.
#1 MISSION THREE Two wins from post 4 inward at this level recently.
#5 BROOKLETS JUSTIFIED Steps up for Moreau after back-to-back wins at odds-on.
Race Summary J P Oscar saved ground in sixth, picked up live cover, tipped 3-wide in early stretch and blew past the 2-1 pace-setter. Thinking he can handle the class hike for new barn with a duplicate performance.

                Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

                Gulfstream Park - Race #5
#2 Galileos Ballerina Ran an even fifth in a much tougher spot last time and can bring a late run much like she did in her maiden win in her debut at Fair Grounds.
#5 Afficionado Ran an even third last time out and has been on the board in four straight; good enough to be a factor throughout.
#6 Mijet Gave way late after setting a much-too-fast pace vs. many of the same last out; will be a big player if she can slow it down a bit on the front end.
Race Summary Galileos Ballerina can benefit from a fast pace and will likely improve in her second over the course and second off a layoff. Miguel Vasquez has been a hot rider over the past week, with eight wins.
                Gulfstream Park - Race #6
#4 Najwa Was a wide third in her debut and has had a decent work since that one; likely to improve in her return.
#5 Speeding Was a good third in her debut, which came in a turf race; moves over to the main track and has good recent works to her credit.
#10 Gladys Has a long list of workouts in preparation for her debut. Medaglia d'Oro filly can be a factor at first asking.
Race Summary Najwa was a non-threatening third in her debut, gets more distance and can sustain a rally in her second attempt.
                Gulfstream Park - Race #7
#9 Fully Loaded Is very fast but without the early lead has won two of his last three; will get a good run from the outside and can collar the speedsters in the lane.
#5 Go Gone Gone Just missed in a race that went in :54 4-5 for five furlongs on turf; extremely fast and will ensure another ultra-quick pace.
#4 Shoshone Brave Set the pace for a half-mile, then gave way after putting down the fast fractions; that was his first in nine month and he can improve in his return.
Race Summary Fully Loaded probably isn't fast enough to get the lead, but that should work in his favor as he can stalk the pacesetters. Should have enough left to hold off late runners.
