My 500♦ Winner last night was on the Philadelphia Phillies. Today they're my free winner on the New York Mets, as it's a cheap price considering how well the Phils are playing right now.

And this might be a bit of a motivated start for Zack Wheeler, who was with New York last season, and decided to sign with its biggest rival. Today he steps to the hill for the Phils, whom he's already made quite an impression with this season.

Wheeler is 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA, and has been a bright spot in a staff that has struggled to a league third-worst ERA (5.69). What Wheeler has done to help his case is stay ahead in counts, and keep hitters on edge. He's done a good job of setting them up, and while he has the lowest strikeout rate of his career, he's creating outs by getting hitters to overswing and ground out or pop out. Bad news for the struggling Mets, who have lost two in a row.

Rick Porcello is up for the Mets, and brings a 5.68 ERA to the rubber with him. I admit, he's been better in his last two starts, than he was in the first two, but today he runs into a buzzsaw.

          Philly completes the sweep.

          4* PHILLIES

Another day, another easy comp-play winner, as the Phillies blasted the Mets 6-2 on Saturday and easily covered the run-line (-1½ runs). For Sunday’s freebie on the diamond, we’ll head to the Twin Cities and play the Royals-Twins series finale “under” the total.

Two young, but talented, starting pitchers going in this one. Let’s start with Minnesota right-hander Randy Dobnak, someone I admittedly knew little about till two weeks ago. Dobnak has been absolutely dominant in four starts, going 3-1 with a 0.90 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP. Facing the White Sox, Indians, Pirates and Brewers, Dobnak has allowed a total of two runs, 13 hits and five walks in 20 innings.

After Dobnak came up short in his first start (falling 10-3 at the White Sox), he has won his last three by scores of 4-1, 5-2 and 4-2. All three easily stayed under the total. Dobnak also made one start late last season against the Royals at home and yielded just one run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 4-3 victory — which stayed well under the total of 11.

The Royals will counter Dobnak with rookie Brady Singer, who is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA through his first four big-league starts. That includes Monday’s 4-2 home win over the Twins in which Singer allowed just two runs on five hits in five innings. So far in the early going of what the Royals hope will be a long, productive career, Singer has been extremely consistent: The right-hander has pitched exactly five innings in all four of his starts; he’s given up exactly five hits in his last three outings (after allowing just three in his big-league debut); he’s yielded exactly two walks in every start; and he’s surrendered exactly two runs in three of his four trips to the mound.

Like the Twins with Dobnak, the Royals have stayed under the number in three of Singer’s four efforts (including Monday’s 4-2 win over Minnesota). Not only that but yesterday’s 7-inning doubleheader in which both the Twins and Royals scored 4-2 victories — with both staying below the total — the under is now 7-1 in the last eight meetings between these AL Central rivals dating to the final week of the 2019 season. What’s more, both have been “under” teams so far in 2020 — after Saturday, each squad is 13-8 to the “under”).

My free play for Sunday is the streaking Arizona Diamondbacks, who have won three straight and will finish off the weekend set against the dinged up San Diego Padres.

It seemed to be destiny in last night's 7-6 win, as the Diamondbacks were up 7-3 heading into the ninth, when the Friars waged a furious rally. But after plating three, pinch runner Jorge Mateo was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first base on a single to end the game.

In addition to their three-game streak, the Snakes have won 7 of 10, and much of their success has been their newfound offense that rapped 14 hits last night. They suddenly rank eighth in the league with a .252 batting average, and in the month of August rank third overall with a .279 batting average.

Though Arizona starter Robbie Ray stumbles in with a 10.59 ERA, I trust him in revenge-mode, as this marks his second start against the Padres. In his first outing against them, which was his season debut, he gave up three runs in 3.2 innings at Petco Park on July 25.

I won't bother listing Ray or Garrett Richards, though, as I'm banking Arizona's offense. Take the small home pup price.

MLB public betting, line movement for August 16
                          Patrick Everson

The Yankees are one of just three teams playing .700 ball or better this season. New York will surely be favored Sunday night against Boston, but books held off on posting the opening line Saturday.

MLB betting odds are on the board for a 14-game Sunday slate to wrap up the weekend. In the AL East, the first-place Yankees close out the day with a prime-time clash against the last-place Red Sox. Plus, Dodgers-Angels and Brewers-Cubs series finales are on the docket.

Caesars sportsbooks provided insights on MLB opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Sunday’s games.

                          MLB line movement

The Yankees are on a four-game win streak, including the first two games of this four-game set against the Red Sox. Although Sunday’s starters appear to be set – J.A. Happ for New York and Chris Mazza for visiting Boston – most sportsbooks didn’t post an opening line Saturday night for this 7:08 p.m. ET meeting.

In the weekend battle of (sort of) Los Angeles, the Dodgers won the first two games and go for the sweep of the Angels in a 4:10 p.m. ET start. Caesars opened the Dodgers -160 and went to -171 late Saturday night, with the Angels +156.

The Cubs still own MLB’s best record, at 13-5, but they lost the first two games of this series and aim to dodge a sweep in Sunday’s 2:20 p.m. ET contest. Chicago opened -130 and Milwaukee +120 at Caesars books, and there was no line movement Saturday night.

                          MLB public betting

The Consensus indicates plenty of early public support for the Cubs, who were landing 70 percent of picks Saturday night. The Dodgers were drawing 62 percent of early Consensus picks.
