The Giants made a big move toward the wild card by going 20-6 from June 30th through July 31st over a one month period. But they’ve since gone 1-6 in the month of August and really need to get things turned around here against a Philadelphia Phillies team that they are trailing in the wild card race.
Ace Madison Bumgarner is here to save the day as he started the only game they have won in August. The Giants are 7-1 in Bumgarner’s last eight starts, and he has gone 3-0 with a 3.19 ERA during this stretch. He is 4-3 with a 3.57 ERA and 1.146 WHIP in 11 career starts against the Phillies.
Aaron Nola has really been off his game this season compared to last. He has a 4.56 ERA in nine road starts this season. Nola hasn’t been able to figure out the Giants, going 1-1 with a 6.46 ERA and 1.631 WHIP in three career starts against them.
The Phillies are 6-13 in their last 19 vs. a left-handed starter. The Giants are 6-0 in Bumgarner’s last six home starts. San Francisco is 12-3 in its last 15 home meetings with Philadelphia. Bet the Giants Thursday.

The two bottom teams in the NL West will face off tonight when the Padres (52-61) host the Rockies (52-62) in San Diego. While neither team can be happy with their current standing, only a half-game separates these two clubs.
The Padres, who are relatively dependent on the long ball, lead the Rockies in the home run department by a total of 173 to 148. However, Colorado is better offensively overall. With a 105-run advantage over the Padres, the Rockies’ 607 runs scored on the season is good enough for seventh in the majors.
Those statistics will place a bit more pressure on the shoulders of Eric Lauer (6-8, 4.43 ERA), who starts for San Diego tonight. The left-hander has struggled mightily when it comes to playing the Rockies. Against Colorado, Lauer has a 12.51 ERA in four starts.
For the Rockies, right-hander Jon Gray (10-7, 4.03 ERA) will start. When he faced San Diego in June, Gray recorded 10 strikeouts over six innings in a win. In his career, Gray is 10-3 with a 2.87 ERA against the Padres.
While the Padres are winless in six straight games when Lauer starts against teams with a losing record, the Rockies are 10-2 in Gray’s last 12 coming off four days of rest.
