8-Unit Play. Take #114 Carolina (-10) over Tampa Bay (1 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 24)
Note: This is our Divisional Game of the Year.
Tampa Bay's cover against the Falcons on Monday Night Football was a fluke. Jameis Winston played out of his mind. The Bucs got a ton of calls all night from the refs. The Falcons missed some golden opportunities to really put that game away - and the Bucs still needed a backdoor touchdown in the final minutes to cover. Tampa Bay was decimated going into that game against Atlanta. And then they lost 10 more players to injury. They are without three of their best defenders at DT, LB and CB. And now they could be without two starting offensive linemen, wideout DeSean Jackson, and tight end O.J. Howard. They just don't have anyone. The Bucs also have to go on the road after a short week and play a team that manhandled them 17-3 the first time they played. This is just a bad matchup for Tampa Bay. Winston doesn't have the patience or the accuracy to handle Carolina's Cover-2. And if the Panthers were able to shut down and harass Aaron Rodgers last week they can do the same to Winston this week. Tampa Bay doesn't have anything to play for and they just don't have enough healthy bodies. They have lost four straight games, there are rumors of dissension in the lock room, and after maxing out (and losing) on MNF I just don't see them coming with a huge effort in this one. Carolina, on the other hand, could still win the NFC South and they are jostling for playoff position. They've been dominating at home and they should be able to physically dominate this beat-up Tampa Bay team on both sides of the ball. Make no mistake: Carolina won't hold back or take it easy on a division rival. I think that they could bury the Bucs early, and if they do then Tampa Bay will likely just roll over. I'm playing for a blowout from a Panthers team that's won six of seven and is highly motivated.
