      Preview: Senators at Capitals

      Gracenote
      Nov 21, 2017

Alex Ovechkin began the season with a flourish, recording an opening-night hat trick in a 5-4 shootout victory over the Ottawa Senators on Oct. 5. The three-time Hart Trophy recipient looks to recapture that magic and snap a six-game goal drought on Wednesday as the Washington Capitals host the Senators.

While Ovechkin is mired in a modest goal-scoring slump, fellow forward Nicklas Backstrom has failed to find the back of the net in his last 15 games - although coach Barry Trotz believes the Swede is knocking on the door. "Against Minnesota (on Saturday), he could've had a hat trick, and they're not going in easy for him," Trotz told the Washington Post. "I think you get more concerned when you're not getting any chances. ... Would I like more? Yeah, absolutely." Ottawa would accept anything as it has mustered just three goals overall in its last three games (0-2-1) and is 0-for-11 on the power play in that stretch. "As of right now, it's not going the way we want to," Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson said. "It's something we know and that we're trying to figure out. We're going to have to find a way here to sort that out as soon as possible."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet East, TVAS (Ottawa), NBCSN Washington

ABOUT THE SENATORS (8-5-6): Ottawa recalled 2015 first-round pick Thomas Chabot from Belleville of the American Hockey League on the heels of the scary head injury sustained by fellow defenseman Mark Borowiecki in Sunday's 3-0 setback to the New York Rangers. Chabot excited the Senators' fan base with two assists in three games during the team's season-opening western Canadian road swing, although coach Guy Boucher told the Toronto Sun that expectations need to be tempered. "We're happy to see Chabot here, but don't make it any bigger than it is," Boucher said. "He's here because (Borowiecki is injured). He's still developing. He still has some things to work on, but we're definitely going to use his strengths."

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (11-10-1): Washington has been outscored 17-9 during its last four games (1-3-0), with Lars Eller netting the team's lone goal in a 4-1 setback to Calgary on Monday. "I know this team can bring a lot more than that, than what we've been showing. It's been a little bit of a theme for us lately," Eller said. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored two goals and set up two others in his previous three games before being held in check versus the Flames, but the 25-year-old Russian looks to fluster the Senators again after notching three assists in the first encounter.

      OVERTIME

      1. Ottawa RW Mark Stone, who scored twice in the first meeting with Washington, has 10 goals in the last 12 games overall.

      2. Capitals G Braden Holtby has surrendered 11 goals in his last three outings (1-2-0) after permitting that same total during his six-game winning streak.

      3. Ottawa C Derick Brassard scored a goal and set up two others in the first encounter with Washington, but has just five points (all assists) in his last 11 games.

      PREDICTION: Capitals 4, Senators 2

          Preview: Rangers at Hurricanes

          Gracenote
          Nov 21, 2017

Finnish linemates Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho are proving to be a nice one-two punch for the Carolina Hurricanes. The duo looks to continue its offensive surge Wednesday as Carolina attempts to extend its home point streak to six games when it hosts the New York Rangers.

The 23-year-old Teravainen leads the Hurricanes with 19 points, collecting 10 during his current four-game streak, while Aho has notched nine in the same span to raise his season total to 17. Aho, 20, also is riding a four-game goal-scoring streak after tallying in Sunday's 4-2 triumph over the New York Islanders as Carolina improved to 3-0-2 in its last five at home. The Rangers hope to avoid a third consecutive road loss after being blanked 2-0 at Columbus on Friday. The club bounced back two days later as Henrik Lundqvist posted his second shutout of the season in a 3-0 home victory over Ottawa.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG2 (New York), FSN Carolinas

ABOUT THE RANGERS (10-9-2): Mika Zibanejad scored his 10th goal of the season Sunday to move one ahead of Michael Grabner for the team lead. The 24-year-old Swede has reached double digits in 21 games and is four tallies away from matching his total from last season, which he registered in 56 contests. Captain Ryan McDonagh is sixth on the team in points with 12 - all assists.

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (9-6-4): Teravainen's recent efforts earned him the NHL's First Star of the Week honors. The left wing claimed the title by scoring five goals - including his first career hat trick, which was registered in a span of 7 minutes, 5 seconds against Dallas on Nov. 13 for the second-fastest natural hat trick in franchise history - and setting up five others during his four-game point streak. Aho, who scored 24 goals as a rookie last season, opened 2017-18 with a 15-game drought before rediscovering his touch.

          OVERTIME

          1. Hurricanes RW Josh Jooris returned to the lineup Sunday after missing the previous contest with a lower-body injury but saw his point drought reach seven games.

          2. Nearly half of the Rangers' 66 goals this season (32) have been scored by players younger than 26.

          3. Carolina is attempting to climb up the Metropolitan Division standings as it has earned points in seven of its last eight games (5-1-2).

          PREDICTION: Rangers 3, Hurricanes 2

              Preview: Flames at Blue Jackets

              Gracenote
              Nov 21, 2017

The Columbus Blue Jackets are on a tear but another team hitting its stride will try to cool them off when the Calgary Flames pay a visit to Nationwide Arena on Wednesday night. Columbus answered a four-game skid with a four-game winning streak as it prepares to face the high-powered Flames, winners of four of their last five games.

Calgary, which is making the fourth stop on its six-game road trip, has scored at least four goals in each of its wins during the current 4-1-0 stretch. Johnny Gaudreau is sparking the Flames' offense with a six-game goal streak and a career-best 10-game point string, helping Calgary go 7-3-0 in that span. "They have a lot of similar traits as us," Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno said. "You've got the high-powered offense, the great defensemen and a good goalie. So, I'm expecting a great matchup and an exciting game because of the talent out there. We look forward to playing these guys." Defense and goaltending actually have provided the impetus for Columbus, which has permitted only four goals during the four-game run.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet360 (Calgary), FSN Ohio (Columbus)

ABOUT THE FLAMES (12-8-0): Gaudreau is in the midst of a torrid stretch with seven goals in the last six games and 19 points in the last 10, including five consecutive multiple-point contests. "He's making something happen every shift," center Sean Monahan said. "To be able to play on his line, it's a lot of fun right now. That confidence is hard to take away from a guy like that, so he's going to continue to do that." Monahan is on a roll of his own with seven goals and 13 points over the past nine games, giving him a team-leading 12 tallies.

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (13-7-1): Foligno has been held off the scoresheet for a dozen games, matching the longest stretch of his career, and may be moved to wing when injured center Alexander Wennberg rejoins the lineup. With Foligno struggling, coach John Tortorella moved Pierre-Luc Dubois to center on a line with Artemi Panarin and liked what he saw out of the rookie. "He wasn’t overwhelmed playing with Panarin," Tortorella said. "I don’t think he was bothered at all about the positions he was put in and he was playing with one of our top guys."

              OVERTIME

              1. Blue Jackets G Sergei Bobrovsky is 5-2-2 with a 2.17 goals-against average versus the Flames.

              2. Calgary is 7-for-18 on the power play over the past four games.

              3. Columbus C Lukas Sedlak (ankle) will return to the lineup Wednesday after missing 13 games.

PREDICTION: Blue Jackets 3, Flames 2

                  Preview: Blackhawks at Lightning

                  Gracenote
                  Nov 21, 2017

The Chicago Blackhawks may be starting to turn their fortunes in a positive direction with two straight wins and could gain a big boost if they can go into the holiday with a road victory against the red-hot Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night. The Blackhawks responded to giving up seven goals against New Jersey by beating the New York Rangers 6-3 and then knocking off two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh 2-1 on Saturday.

“I find that we’re moving better and skating better,” Chicago coach Joel Quenneville told reporters. “We still think there’s better puck management internally, on every single line, and that could make us better. That’s where the upside has to come from.” Artem Anisimov posted five of his team-leading 10 goals in the last three games for the Blackhawks, who will need to put together another strong offensive effort against the NHL’s top scoring team Wednesday. Steven Stamkos leads the league with 35 points and Nikita Kucherov has an NHL-best 17 goals for the Lightning, who are putting up 3.95 per contest with points in 17 of the first 20 games. Tampa Bay tries to avoid its first losing streak of the season after dropping a 5-3 decision Saturday to the New York Islanders at home.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, NBCSN Chicago

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (10-8-2): Rookie forward Alex DeBrincat has also played a big part during Chicago’s 3-1-0 run while posting four goals and two assists during the stretch to push his season total to 13 points (seven goals). Patrick Kane leads the team with 19 points, recording a goal and four assists in the last four games, and fellow forward Nick Schmaltz registered six assists in the past three contests. Corey Crawford (9-7-0, 2.19 goals-against average, .933 save percentage) allowed four goals to win the last two games after allowing six versus New Jersey.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (15-3-2): Yanni Gourde emerged last season when Tampa Bay’s injury list grew and has not lost his spot, putting up six goals and eight assists with a plus-11 rating in the first 20 games. Gourde has played on right wing with center Brayden Point (eight goals, 20 points) and left wing Ondrej Palat (five, 12) on a second line that has produced offensively while often also being matched against the opponent’s top line. Defenseman Jake Dotchin, who missed the last two practices with an undisclosed injury, is considered day-to-day.

                  OVERTIME

                  1. Tampa Bay G Andrei Vasilevskiy (14-2-1, .928 save percentage) beat the Blackhawks twice last season.

                  2. Chicago LW Brandon Saad recorded six goals in the first six games of the season but managed one in the last 14.

                  3. Gourde had the overtime winner against Chicago last March and the Lightning have earned a point in the last four meetings (3-0-1).

                  PREDICTION: Blackhawks 3, Lightning 2

CFL Betting NotesOttawa RedBlacks 4-7-1 SU, 8-4 ATS vs. Montreal Alouettes 3-8 SU, 4-7 ATSPoint-spread: Ottawa -2Total: 48Game OverviewOttawas recent three-game run both SU and ATS came to a sudden end last week, but it still has the slight edge in the East to repeat as division champions. The total stayed UNDER in that loss to the Tiger-Cats and it has now stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in nine of the RedBlacks last 10 games. Adding injury to insult, quarterback Trevor Harris is expected to be out several weeks after badly bruising his shoulder in that loss. With Harris out of the lineup for Ottawa, Montreal has an excellent opportunity to make up some ground in the East, but it is going to need a much better effort from its defense. The one strength of this team coming into this season was its defense, but going back to a 41-40 loss to Winnipeg on July 27, the Alouettes have allowed at least 32 points in five of their last six games.Betting TrendsOttawa has won seven of the last eight meetings both SU and ATS including a 32-4 victory against Montreal on Aug. 31 in a game that closed as a PICK. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings.
