                Preview: Hawks at Wizards

                Gracenote
                Nov 11, 2017

The Washington Wizards will try to put together consecutive wins for the first time in nearly three weeks when they continue a four-game homestand against the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday in their first matchup since the first round of the playoffs last season. The Wizards are 3-5 since opening the season 3-0, but they put things together on both ends of the floor in a 111-95 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday.

It was the squad's best defensive effort in a span of five games, the first four of which saw it give up an average of 115.3 points. "It's a start," coach Scott Brooks told reporters. "It's not solved, our defense, but it's a start. It was a solid basketball game for a lot of guys." The Hawks have been more competitive of late, first snapping an eight-game slide at Cleveland and then suffering narrow defeats against early Eastern Conference front-runners Boston and Detroit. However, after Friday's 111-104 loss to the Pistons, Atlanta had allowed at least 110 points in six consecutive games.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), NBCSN Washington

ABOUT THE HAWKS (2-10): Kent Bazemore scored a season-high 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting in Friday's loss after shooting under 50 percent from the field in his previous nine affairs. Five others reached double figures for Atlanta, which was done in by a 19-point second quarter in falling for the sixth time in its last seven road games. "Hopefully we can build on the second half, the way we played," coach Mike Budenholzer told the media. "It's really how we need to play for the whole game. Not good enough in the first half and dug ourselves a hole."

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (6-5): John Wall scored 23 points, Bradley Beal had 22 and Otto Porter Jr. chipped in 20 in the win over the Lakers as Washington shot 51.8 percent from the floor. Seven reserves combined to score 22 on 8-of-21 shooting, continuing a theme of some lackluster bench play for the Wizards, who entered Friday's action with an average of 29.6 points from their substitutes - 24th in the NBA. The starters should be bolstered by the continued progression of forward Markieff Morris, who scored 16 points in 17 minutes Thursday in his fourth game since returning from hernia surgery.

                BUZZER BEATERS

                1. Wall averaged 29.5 points and 10.3 assists in Washington's 4-2 first-round series win over Atlanta in April.

                2. Hawks C Dewayne Dedmon is shooting 69.4 percent over his last four games.

                3. Porter is shooting 51.1 percent from 3-point range.

                PREDICTION: Wizards 109, Hawks 99

                    Preview: Clippers at Pelicans

                    Gracenote
                    Nov 11, 2017

The New Orleans Pelicans found a groove during an impressive road trip and they will try to translate their success to the home court against the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday. After a 3-5 start that featured three home losses, the Pelicans went 3-1 on their swing and the only loss was a four-point setback in the finale at Toronto.

The star duo of Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins combined for 38 points and 22 rebounds - both well below their season averages - and New Orleans had just enough sloppy moments while falling to 5-3 on the road. "Off our turnovers and their second shots, they ended up with 38 points," coach Alvin Gentry told the medai. "That's a lot of points to give up in an NBA game." The Clippers have been scoring enough points but making far too few stops on the other end during a four-game losing streak, including Friday's 120-111 setback at Oklahoma City. Guard Patrick Beverley (knee) and forward Danilo Gallinari (glute) were both absent and star forward Blake Griffin was 5-of-19 from the floor in the setback.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), FS New Orleans

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (5-6): Los Angeles is 1-6 since a 4-0 start and opponents are averaging 114.3 points during the four-game slide. It was competitive on Friday only because of reserve guard Lou Williams, who hit six 3-pointers en route to 35 points in 39 minutes. Beverley has already been ruled out for Saturday's game while Griffin could probably use some rest after averaging 18.3 points - more than four below his season average - on 34 percent shooting during a three-game stretch and playing 40 minutes Friday night.

ABOUT THE PELICANS (6-6): While Davis and Cousins were somewhat kept in check at Toronto, guard Jrue Holiday erupted for season highs of 34 points and 11 assists. "Jrue played incredible (Thursday)," Cousins told reporters. "It sucks that we couldn't give him the help that he deserved tonight and to help pull out this win. He had a huge night, he carried us the entire night, and like I said, it just sucks that we couldn’t be a supporting cast for him." Cousins averaged 31.5 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in two games against the Clippers last season while still with Sacramento.

                    BUZZER BEATERS

                    1. Williams is averaging 24.7 points while making 11 3-pointers in a three-game stretch.

                    2. The Pelicans released veteran F Josh Smith on Friday.

                    3. The Clippers won two of three meetings last season.

                    PREDICTION: Pelicans 111, Clippers 105

                        Preview: Kings at Knicks

                        Gracenote
                        Nov 10, 2017

The New York Knicks are winners of six of their last eight games, but the health status of star forward Kristaps Porzingis is concerning. The Knicks hope to have Porzingis back on the floor when they host the Sacramento Kings on Saturday.

Porzingis sat out a 112-99 loss at Orlando on Wednesday with elbow soreness and indicated to reporters that it is an ongoing issue. "It bothers me a little bit but not that bad," Porzingis said, according to the New York Post. "It's always, I have to get the swelling down and then I'll be fine again. But I think once the season's over I might have to do something about it. I just can't keep going like this every year." The Kings are winners of back-to-back games after dropping seven in a row and are watching their own young players try to become stars. Rookie point guard De'Aaron Fox went 4-of-13 from the floor on Thursday but knocked down the most important shot of the contest with a go-ahead jumper in the final seconds to seal a 109-108 win over the Philadelphia 76ers.

                        TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Sacramento), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE KINGS (3-8): Fox, 19, is averaging 12.3 points in 27 minutes off the bench and is earning the respect of the team's veterans. "For that guy, at that age, to be able to take that shot after the shooting night that he had, even when the play may not have been drawn up that way, that just shows guts," veteran guard Garrett Temple said, according to the Sacramento Bee. "A lot of guts, a lot of gall to be able to take that shot and make it. Pure." Fox logged 11 more minutes on Thursday than starting point guard George Hill, who managed two points on 0-of-4 shooting in 19 minutes.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (6-5): Porzingis became the unquestioned star of the Knicks when Carmelo Anthony was traded on the eve of training camp and is optimistic about the direction of the team. "I think we have better fundamentals," Porzingis told the New York Daily News. "Defensively, we're going after it every night. We may not do it 48 minutes, but there are parts of the game where we actually lock in. We do our defensive system the right way. And we just play hard. That's the main difference." Porzingis is leading that defensive effort with an average of 2.3 blocks while putting up 30 points on 51.2 percent shooting at the other end of the floor.

                        BUZZER BEATERS

                        1. Kings PF Zach Randolph is averaging 18.3 points over the last four games and posted a season-high 20 on Thursday.

                        2. Knicks SF Tim Hardaway Jr. is averaging 21.7 points over the last seven games after putting up 9.8 in the first four.

                        3. New York took both meetings last season despite Porzingis going a combined 12-of-37 from the floor.

                        PREDICTION: Knicks 106, Kings 99

                            Preview: Grizzlies at Rockets

The Houston Rockets are back to doing what they did last season - letting James Harden be one of the best players in the game while leading the team to victories. Harden will try to guide the Rockets to a fifth consecutive win when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday.

Harden followed up a 56-point, 13-assist performance in a win over Utah on Sunday with a triple-double on Thursday, collecting 35 points, 13 assists, 11 rebounds and five steals in a 117-113 win over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. "We rely on him, and we'll always rely on him," Houston coach Mike D'Antoni told reporters of Harden. "...But when you're a superstar, you're going to carry the team a lot of times." The Grizzlies take pride in stopping the opposition's best players and limited Damian Lillard to 12 points on 4-of-16 shooting in a 98-97 win at Portland on Tuesday. "Defense has a lot to do with communication," Memphis center Marc Gasol told reporters. "It allows you to see a little bit of what's going to happen, maybe half a second or a second early, and it brings also trust. The guy on the ball knows where you're going to be at and then you get a little bit higher and more into it and you just trust the next guy behind you, and that's what defense does for you."

                            TV:
8 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Memphis), AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (7-4): Memphis wrapped up a 2-1 west coast trip with the win at Portland and is seeing Houston for the third time already in 2017-18. The Grizzlies had little trouble stopping Harden and company in those first two games, holding the Rockets to an average of 89.5 points and limiting Harden to 21 points on 35.9 percent shooting. Memphis did not have a starter score in double figures in a 103-89 home win over Houston on Oct. 28 but is getting better production of late from point guard Mike Conley, who reached 20 points in each of the last three games.

                            ABOUT THE ROCKETS (9-3):
Houston acquired Chris Paul over the summer to take some of the load off Harden, but Paul has been out since the season opener with a knee injury and is not expected back until next week. "I do see in a week or so that we'll get Chris Paul back and take a lot of that off of (Harden)," D'Antoni told reporters. "The season's long. (Thursday's) focus was to win this game. Then we've got to worry about Saturday." Harden logged 43 minutes on Thursday and is averaging 36.2 minutes while putting up 29.9 points, 10 assists and 4.9 rebounds.

                            1. Rockets PF Luc Mbah a Moute (knee) sat out Thursday and is day-to-day.

                            2. Memphis SG Ben McLemore (foot) is expected to make his season debut on Saturday.

                            3. Rockets SG Eric Gordon scored exactly 20 points in each of the last three games.

                            PREDICTION: Rockets 108, Grizzlies 101

                                Preview: Cavaliers at Mavericks

                                Gracenote
                                Nov 10, 2017

The Cleveland Cavaliers are losers of six of their last eight games and stand as one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA. The Cavaliers will get a chance to get themselves right on the defensive end when they visit one of the worst offensive teams in the league in the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday.

Cleveland allowed its opponent to score at least 112 points in each of the last 10 games, capped by a 117-113 loss at Houston on Thursday that kicked off a four-game road trip. "I thought with the effort and the energy, if we play like that every night we'll be a lot better," Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue told reporters of the defense after holding the Rockets to 46.8 percent shooting in the loss. "They had us scrambling around early. ... Overall, I thought we were flying around defensively and trying to run guys off the 3-point line, contesting shots." The Mavericks had yet to reach 112 points in a game until breaking out in a 113-99 win at the Washington Wizards on Tuesday that snapped a six-game slide. "You know, I thought everyone did a great job chipping in," Dallas forward Harrison Barnes, who scored a season-high 31 points, told reporters. "It was a great win for us."

                                TV:
8:30 p.m. ET, FS Ohio (Cleveland), FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (5-7): James missed most of the preseason due to ankle issues and rolled his left ankle in Thursday's loss. "It's been the story of the early season for me kind of turning my ankles," James, who plans to play on Saturday, told reporters. "Just lace them up tighter and get back out there." James delivered 33 points in 40 minutes in the loss and is averaging 29.3 points on 60.1 percent shooting, 8.9 assists and seven rebounds in 38 minutes -- second-highest minutes average in the league heading into play on Friday.

                                ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (2-10):
Dallas hasn't had much reason for optimism this season aside from flashes of brilliance from rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr., who scored a season-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds and eight assists in the win over Washington. "Dennis Smith was a great basketball player tonight," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle told reporters after the game. "He was great in all areas. He demonstrated aggression, poise, smarts and leadership, and it's great to see. He's worked so hard and it's been frustrating, obviously, at times, but to have it come together on the road in really a must-win game with where we're at is really great to see. Now, he's just got to duplicate it." Smith is averaging 18.5 points over the last four games.

                                BUZZER BEATERS

                                1. Cavaliers reserve F Jeff Green scored a season-high 27 points on Thursday -- his first 20-plus outing of the campaign.

                                2. Mavericks PF Dirk Nowitzki scored in single figures in each of the last three games.

                                3. Dallas snapped a four-game losing streak in the series with a 104-97 win at home on Jan. 30.
