      RICE vs. WESTERN MICHIGAN
      PLAY: RICE -2.5

Rice is a team that has flown under the radar this season and because of that we catch a nice number. The Owls are virtually playing a home game here as Reliant Stadium is their home away from home as it is just five minutes from the Rice campus. Obvious advantages include maintaining a consistent practice schedule, being able to sleep in their own beds and eat meals they are used to, and one unique advantage is that they won't be impacted by travel schedules. Ad in a six-game winning streak and Rice is rolling.

Western Michigan also had a very solid season, going 9-3 including a marquee win against Illinois on a neutral field. Its three losses came against Nebraska, Central Michigan and Ball St., all bowl teams and all on the road. I believe the record is not quite as good as it looks however as the Broncos were outgained in each of their last three games and four of their last five. The offense has the ability to be explosive but the defense allowed too many big plays and if ever there is a big play offense, it is Rice.

As with Western Michigan, all of the Owls losses came on the road and those were against a much tougher Vanderbilt, Texas and Tulsa, all bowl teams as well and better ones at that than what the Broncos lost to. The winning formula all year has been to slow down the opposing team just enough to allow the offense to rack up points. The offense has done just that in compiling a 41.6 ppg scoring average. Conversely, Western Michigan averages 29.8 ppg.

Rice quarterback Chase Clement was 6th in the nation in pass efficiency and averaged 318 passing ypg. He threw 41 touchdown passes and only seven interceptions during the regular season. His main targets are Jarrett Dillard who had a nation-best 19 touchdown catches and James Casey who had a C-USA record 104 pass receptions. Western Michigan is 96th in the nation in pass defense, yielding 249 ypg. On the other side, the Rice defense played well down the stretch and pressured the quarterback much better.

If this game does turn into a shootout which it looks like it will, Rice has the edge as it is 14-4 ATS when both teams score 28 or more points over the last three seasons. The Owls are 8-2 ATS with a total of 63 or greater. Western Michigan meanwhile does not recover well from big losses as it is 4-13-1 ATS in its last 18 games after a loss of 20 or more points. The Owls are poised for a 10-win season for just the second time in history and a bowl victory for the first since 1954. They get it done in front of the home crowd. 8* Rice Owls.

        Nite Owl Sports

Los Angeles Clippers @ Sacramento Kings
        Pick: 3 units Under 192

When I first looked at this match -up, I had to take a shower to get the "stink" off of me, because yes, both of these teams are THAT BAD right now -- clearly the two worst in the NBA. But while in the shower, I started to think about why these two teams have been so bad, and the primary reason is that due to injuries to their best offensive players (Kevin Martin for Sacto and Zach Randolph for Clippers), THEY CAN'T SCORE! Looking at their recent games, we see offensive outputs by both teams which were downright “offensive” to their coaches, fans and other “supporters” -- try an average of < 80 ppg by Clips in their last 3 (85,76 and 75), and in the UGLIEST OFFENSIVE PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR, a ridulous 63 points scored by the Sacto “Queens” in their last game, at home no less, in a 40+ point whipping by the angry Celtics coming off of an unusual upset loss at Golden State, with that Boston-Sacto mis-match being a big victory for us on Sunday. So I then checked the opening totals line, which I clearly expected to be somewhere in the mid 180s given both teams' recent offensive ineptitiude, but it wasn't -- there it was, with a 192 total hung on this Ugly Game of the Month.

With the NBA regular season being over six months long, teams are going to go through phases, both good and bad, which are in many cases affected by injuries to key players, which has been the case for Sacto for nearly a month, since their main “go to guy” K-Mart went down with a serious ankle injury. And while the Clippers appeared to be making a resurgence of some sorts after acquiring Zach Randolph by trade a few weeks ago (one of the few good front office moves in the history of the franchise), with a huge OT win in Portland just about ten days ago, they have recently reverted to the same old Clippers once Randolph sustained a knee injury and became unavailable. And things got even worse with another knee injury to a key player, rookie offensive sparkplug Ricky Davis, who is now also “on the shelf.” As NBA cappers, we need to be sensitive to these phases and take advantage of them, as we are doing here.

So take the under 192 and watch something else more entertaining, but wait for a good result on this game.

          College Football
          Nevada -3 over Maryland
Its not a shock to see Nevada favored here. For starters the Wolfpack have a better offense and are used to playing on the smurf turf in Boise. Maryland had a shot to get into the Orange Bowl, but because they lost their final two games they get a Tuesday afternoon game in the bitter cold on a blue playing surface. Maryland is the most hot and cold team in the nation and I do not expect them to be as focused for this game as Nevada will be. Take the favored Wolfpack.

          Western Michigan +3 over Rice
Rice has the homefield advantage and the majority of the fans will be supporting them, but I think that is the only real advantage they have. This is a game in which the team that makes more stops on defense will obviously win the game. In my eyes the Western Michigan defense has shown the ability to play tight at times. Rice's defense is just awful. Western Michigan has a big time offense and should play slightly better on defense. Take WMU.

          Oregon +2.5 over Oklahoma State
The Cowboys were over shadowed by the three BIG 12 teams that are getting all the attention. Those teams also were the only teams to beat Oklahoma. What all three teams had in common were superior offenses. Oregon brings a great offense into this game and actually has the ability to stop teams on defense. The Big 12 was known for its great offense mostly because the defenses stunk. Oregon is more balanced and if they did not have to run into USC every year they might be a Top 5 program. Take the Ducks.

          NBA Basketball
          Suns -3 over Grizzles

          NCAA Basketball
