NFL Week 8 lines that make you go hmmm...
    Peter Korner

Before this past week, Oakland’s offense had scored 53 points in the previous four games. How will the Silver and Black do against the Bills vaunted defense?

Minnesota Vikings vs. Cleveland Browns (+9.5, 37.5)

Being on neutral ground, the offshore opener of Minnesota -7.5 was quickly devoured by those sharp bettors who were expecting higher, like myself. I made this at least -10.5 bordering -11 from the get-go.

Minnesota has quickly become a defensive force in the league allowing 17, 14, 17, 10 and 16 points in its last five games. That stop unit going against a Cleveland offense that is struggling mightily, scoring 7, 14, 17 and nine points in the past four weeks, appears to be good reason that the difference between these two will easily cover any betting number out there up and including the closing line. The Vikings’ point total has improved in three straight weeks. The Browns are losing by an average of over 16 points per game in their last four weeks and nearly by 9.5 for the season.

If you were hedging like most of us early in the betting, taking the Vikings now, instead of later, would be the wise move. Cleveland backers, all two of you, would best benefit by waiting this one out and checking back later to grab a potential double-digit number to your liking. Being that the perception that a difference of 10 is a key number (which it really isn’t), I don’t see this getting maximum play on Minnesota too consistently once it gets that high. Chances of this going over 10 points are minimal.

My strategy here also involves the fact that this is a “special” game, we might not see a letdown by the favored Vikings in a spot like this. Now at 5-2, the last thing Minnesota needs is a closely-fought game in which I am sure they have marked as a notch in the win column. If Cleveland had any talent, particularly at the quarterback position, they could surprise and stay close. But this is certainly not the case.

Insight into Vegas' opening odds and early sharp action for NFL Week 8 betting
There are some very interesting matchups on the NFL Week 8 schedule and we get the story behind those odds from Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports at the Wynn Las Vegas, who gives his insight into the opening lines and early action.

Oakland Raiders at Buffalo Bills (-2.5, 45.5)

Oakland comes to Buffalo for what has become quite a shootout whenever these two teams’ cross paths. I absolutely agreed with the offshore opener of the Bills -3, but early betting has been on the Raiders, partly due to the stunning (and home field advantage) victory over the Chiefs this past week.

Before that, the Raiders were slipping into an abyss that was quickly putting an end to their season. I made this around Buffalo -3 (-120), looking at how the Bills are performing at home this season. In fact, home field has been a huge play between these two as the home team has won six straight times.

Before this past week, Oakland’s offense had scored a mere 53 points in the previous four games. Buffalo has had one of the best “points against” defenses in the NFL all year long. The Bills are playing well, playing better at home, and are feeding off their underdog status. They seem to have the emotional edge in this game.

As an oddsmaker, where my suggestions to bookmakers with parlay cards were under the microscope, I have always deemed the early movement downward to be a set-up for the casinos to print up their cards south of the key 3. A little money early in the week will turn out to be much larger the other way come kickoff. If you like Buffalo, don’t expect this number to drop off much more. The early money did its job. If you like Oakland, I firmly believe you will see 3’s hit the board again come game day so you might want to sit this out until the weekend to play.

Carolina Panthers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-2.5, 44)

I made this game more of a toss-up, closer to Tampa Bay either a pick or -1 at best. I understand Carolina’s awful play against the Bears in Chicago this past weekend, but the Panthers were coming off a tough three-game stretch against some quality opponents and when they found themselves down by two touchdowns off turnovers.

The Bears were able to crank up the defense in a position of power and keep the Carolina offense at bay. The fact that the Bears mustered just three points of offense all day themselves has me thinking that we need to throw that game out and look at this matchup with new eyes.

Tampa Bay has lost four of the last five games. It’s given up just under 30 points per game during that span. Though Tampa Bay did score 27 points off a monster day by QB Jameis Winston, it came against a Bills secondary that was hit with multiple injuries to their cornerbacks during the game.

Tampa Bay doesn’t look to be too strong of a force the rest of the way while Carolina, currently in second place, needs this game to not only to wipe away the unpleasant taste of last week’s results, but firmly entrench themselves in the NFC playoff picture. At this point, there’s a huge difference between 5-3 and 4-4.

I don’t see this number heading up any time soon during the course of this week. I see a strong play on the dog where bettors are planning to see a bounce back game by the Panthers in a totally winnable game. Grab as many points as you can if you’re backing the Panthers. Wait until game day if you like the Buccaneers and be prepared to only lay a point or two max at that time.

Jeff Skinner is picking up right where he left off last season and hopes to continue his early-season scoring surge when the Carolina Hurricanes host the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday afternoon. The 25-year-old left wing registered a career-high 37 goals in 2016-17 and has posted six tallies in the first nine games of this season after scoring in Carolina’s 2-1 loss to St. Louis on Friday night.

The Hurricanes have dropped three of their last four contests and coach Bill Peters told reporters Friday that his team - which has lost four one-goal games in the first month - needs to execute better in certain situations. “We need to learn, and we haven’t done it yet, to win 1-0, to win 2-1,” Carolina’s veteran forward Justin Williams (one goal, five assists) told reporters. The Hurricanes may have to do it Sunday when they face the Ducks, who held the red-hot Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov off the scoresheet in a 4-1 victory at Tampa Bay on Saturday after giving up eight goals in their previous contest. “When it goes like it did last game, you want to make sure you come back and are as sharp and as good as you can be,” Anaheim goalie John Gibson (31 saves) told reporters after the team’s third win in four contests. “You put a little more pressure on yourself to come out and do what’s needed.”

TV: 5 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Anaheim), FSN Carolinas

ABOUT THE DUCKS (5-4-1): Captain Ryan Getzlaf was a dominant force in Saturday’s victory with three assists in 24:16 while playing a key role in cooling off the Stamkos-Kucherov combination. Rickard Rakell notched a pair of goals against Tampa Bay to take over the team lead with five and defenseman Brandon Montour recorded his fourth goal and second assist in the last six games. Defenseman Sami Vatanen made his 2017-18 debut after offseason shoulder surgery on Saturday and finished with three blocks and a hit in 17:12 of ice time - 3:24 shorthanded - while replacing Korbinian Holzer in the lineup.

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (4-4-1): Carolina’s offense has been up and down in the early season and the power play is a big part of that inconsistency, going 1-for-15 in the last five games after a decent start (4-for-17). Forward Teuvo Teravainen, who is tied for third on the team in points with five, left Friday’s game with an upper-body injury and his status for Sunday is uncertain. Cam Ward (1-1-0, 2.54 goals-against average, .941 save percentage) played well in his second start while Scott Darling (3-3-1, 2.70, .899) gave up two or fewer goals in three of his first four starts before allowing 10 combined in the last three.

      OVERTIME

      1. Anaheim G Ryan Miller (wrist) was activated from injured reserve Saturday and could make his season debut on Sunday.

      2. Carolina C Elias Lindholm, who owns five points in nine games, is one assist shy of 100 for his career.

      3. The Ducks have won six of the last seven meetings, including both matchups last season - one in a shootout.

      PREDICTION: Hurricanes 4. Ducks 2

          Preview: Penguins at Jets

          Gracenote
          Oct 29, 2017

The Winnipeg Jets suffered two overtime losses against top Eastern Conference teams on a quick two-game trip earlier in the week and can avenge one of them when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday night. The Jets dropped a 2-1 decision at Pittsburgh on Thursday and lost by the same score at Columbus one night later, giving them at least a point in six of the last seven games.

“We had the right mindset,” Winnipeg captain Blake Wheeler told reporters. “(Thursday) was a tough one. (Friday) was a tough one. We had ‘em where we wanted ‘em. Tough back-to-back. … I think that’s a pretty good situation. It’s just too bad we weren’t able to close ‘em out.” The Jets gave up an average of 36.5 shots in the two overtime losses and hope to give their goalie a little easier night when they face the star-studded Penguins, who are in a mini-funk offensively with six goals combined in the last four games. Pittsburgh fell 2-1 at Minnesota on Saturday, getting only a power-play goal from Evgeni Malkin in the first period. “I don’t think we’re good enough 5-on-5 right now,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan told reporters. “We tend to be one-and-done in the offensive zone.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NHL Network, TVA, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh, Sportsnet (Winnipeg)

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (7-4-1): Malkin and Phil Kessel, who had an assist Saturday, both boast 12 points to lead the team while captain Sidney Crosby is next with 11 after managing just one (assist) despite 19 shots in the past four contests. Defenseman Kris Letang notched an assist against Minnesota to push his season total to seven points, but the former All-Star is a minus-11 in the first 12 contests. Sullivan told reporters he will make the decision on his starting goalie Sunday between backup Casey DeSmith and No. 1 Matt Murray (four goals allowed last three games).

ABOUT THE JETS (4-3-2): Steve Mason, who was brought in as a free agent to be the No. 1 goalie, stopped 35 of 37 shots in the loss to Columbus - his best start of the season after allowing 16 goals in his first three outings. “He played great,” Wheeler told reporters. “I think we finally gave him a fighting chance. … There were a couple of times in the first period we were stuck in there and he battled hard for us.” Left wing Nikolaj Ehlers has been kept off the scoresheet in the last two games after notching all six of his team-leading goals in the previous five contests.

          OVERTIME

          1. Kessel, who reached 300 goals in Thursday's win over Winnipeg, has 10 points in his last seven contests.

          2. Winnipeg F Joel Armia missed Friday’s game with an undisclosed injury and is questionable for Sunday.

          3. The Penguins have scored 17 goals combined while winning the last four meetings with the Jets.

              Preview: Capitals at Flames

              Gracenote
              Oct 29, 2017

The struggling Calgary Flames hope to wake up their dormant offense as they continue a season-long, seven-game homestand against the rejuvenated Washington Capitals on Sunday night. Calgary, which stands 29th in the league at 2.27 goals per game, has been held to two or fewer tallies in eight of 11 games and managed to score just eight times during its current 1-4-0 stretch.

The Flames began their monster homestand with a 2-1 loss to Dallas on Friday, allowing two power-play goals for the third consecutive game and coughing up a lead while outshooting the Stars 30-24. “Both teams had their moments,” Calgary captain Mark Giordano told reporters after the loss. “The bottom line is we are getting our looks, we just have to put them in.” The Flames better find their touch when they take on the Capitals, who regained some momentum and climbed back to .500 with a 5-2 victory at Edmonton on Saturday as Evgeny Kuznetsov recorded a pair of goals and captain Alex Ovechkin notched three assists. The bad news is that Washington is 1-1-0 so far on its three-game road trip, was beaten in four of its previous five games and has been outscored 12-3 in the second of back-to-backs to lose both this season.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCSN Washington, Sportsnet 360 (Calgary)

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (5-5-1): Ovechkin and Kuznetsov lead the team with 15 points apiece after their big nights while Nicklas Backstrom has 12 after returning from a one-game absence due to illness. Devante Smith-Pelly scored a goal Saturday after coach Barry Trotz elevated him to a top-six role with Ovechkin and Kuzentsov, while Backstrom centered T.J. Oshie (nine points this season) and Jakub Vrana. Defensemen John Carlson (28:51) and Brooks Orpik (27:47) both played big minutes against Edmonton, while goalie Braden Holtby got the start and stopped 38 shots after Thursday's rough outing at Vancouver in which he surrendered five on 22 shots.

ABOUT THE FLAMES (5-6-0):Calgary is also just 2-for-23 with the man advantage over the last seven contests, but their struggles on the penalty kill have dropped them to 27th in the league (76.6 percent) overall. “We have to find that mojo back here to kill penalties,” Flames coach Glen Gulutzan told reporters. “My experience with these things is they get mental. You get into patches where you can’t keep the puck out of your net, like we are right now.” Left wing Johnny Gaudreau, who had the lone goal Friday, leads the team with 13 points and Calgary could get veteran right wing Jaromir Jagr (lower-body) back in the lineup Sunday.

              OVERTIME

              1. Washington C Lars Eller had a goal and an assist in Saturday’s win after managing just one point in the previous five contests.

              2. Calgary C Sean Monahan leads the team with five goals (one on the power play) and a plus-4 rating.

              3. The Capitals have earned at least a point in the six consecutive meetings with the Flames (4-0-2).

              PREDICTION: Capitals 3, Flames 2

                          Preview: Bucks at Hawks

                          Gracenote
                          Oct 28, 2017

The Atlanta Hawks played five games in a row on the road to begin the season and did not find home all that comforting when they finally returned on Friday. The Hawks will try to earn their first home win in their second opportunity when they host the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday.

Atlanta welcomed back former franchise player Paul Millsap on Friday and could not stop his new team, the Denver Nuggets, in the fourth quarter en route to a fifth consecutive setback, 105-100. Millsap is one of several players to depart over the summer and the Hawks are enduring a rough transition without three of their top four scorers (Millsap, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Dwight Howard) and best perimeter defender (Thabo Sefolosha) from 2016-17. The Bucks are beginning a stretch of five of six on the road after going 2-2 on a four-game homestand, including a 96-89 loss to the Boston Celtics on Thursday in their lowest-scoring performance of the season. "I thought the ball just didn't move tonight as it has in the first couple games," Milwaukee coach Jason Kidd told reporters after the loss. "It's a great lesson learned, we'll watch it (Friday) and understand how we've got to move the ball. We got some good looks but when the ball didn't move it wasn't a pretty game to watch."

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Southeast (Atlanta)

ABOUT THE BUCKS (3-2): Milwaukee is in every game because of 22-year-old star Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is averaging 35 points on 62.4 percent shooting, 10.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2.4 steals. Antetokounmpo suffered through his worst shooting performance of the young season with 28 points on 10-of-21 from the floor Thursday, but still impressed his teammates. "He's special," point guard Malcolm Brogdon told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel of Antetokounmpo. "He's our leader; we follow his lead. But I think that sometimes we've got to help him, and we've got to be there for him like he's there for us. Continuing to trust each other and continuing to make sure it's a reciprocal relationship going forward, I think we'll be successful."

ABOUT THE HAWKS (1-5): Atlanta is building its offense around 24-year-old point guard Dennis Schroder, who became the unquestioned leader of the team when Millsap and company departed over the summer. Schroder missed two games with an ankle injury and returned at less than 100 percent on Friday but still managed 20 points and six assists in 33 minutes. “I played him a little bit more than I wanted to, or intended,” Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer told reporters of Schroder. “He never wants to come out. Considering he hasn’t played for five days and coming off a pretty good sprain, it’s impressive what he did. He wanted to be there for his teammates. He’s a tough guy, for sure.”

                          BUZZER BEATERS

                          1. Hawks SG Marco Belinelli is 10-of-16 from 3-point range in the last two games.

                          2. Milwaukee SG Tony Snell is 15-of-23 from the floor, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range, in the last three contests.

                          3. Atlanta took three of the four meetings last season, including both on its home floor.

                          PREDICTION: Bucks 109, Hawks 96

                              Preview: Spurs at Pacers

The San Antonio Spurs' undefeated start is a thing of the past after a 114-87 loss at the Orlando Magic on Friday night, and the lack of two veterans may be starting to catch up to the team. The Spurs will try to bounce back when they continue the four-game road trip by visiting the Indiana Pacers on Sunday.

San Antonio is without All-NBA forward Kawhi Leonard (quad) and veteran point guard Tony Parker (quad) and is leaning heavily on power forward LaMarcus Aldridge. Aldridge delivered 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting and 11 rebounds on Friday but only two other players finished in double figures with 12 points apiece and the Spurs ended up shooting 33.7 percent from the field. The Pacers are trying to find out what kind of team they are after following up 130-107 win at Minnesota in which they shot a franchise-recorded 66.7 percent from the field, with a 114-96 loss at Oklahoma City in which they shot 33.7 percent. "They made us work," Indiana coach Nate McMillan told reporters of the Thunder. "They were very physical, defensively, with a lot of grabbing and busting through screens. I think it just wore us down."

ABOUT THE SPURS (4-1): Dejounte Murray won the right to replace Parker in the starting lineup in training camp and got off to a hot start before going into a slump over the past two games. The 21-year-old was held scoreless on 0-of-6 shooting in a win at Miami on Wednesday and managed seven points on 2-of-9 from the floor in Friday's loss. Murray's struggles opened up more playing time on Friday for backup Patty Mills, who recorded 12 points and three assists in 21 minutes but was just 4-of-14 from the field.

ABOUT THE PACERS (2-3): The only Indiana player to shoot better than 50 percent from the floor in Wednesday's loss to Oklahoma City was guard Victor Oladipo, who scored 35 points on 11-of-18 shooting against his former team. Oladipo, who came over during the summer in the deal that sent Paul George to the Thunder, is quickly establishing himself as the leader of the offense for the Pacers while averaging 26 points on 50 percent shooting. "I like Victor's pace," McMillan told reporters. "He's doing a good job of not forcing the issue. His shot selection has been better. He's knocking down shots and in a pretty good rhythm, and we try to go to him as much as possible because he was the one guy with the hot hand. He's just playing at a nice pace."

                              BUZZER BEATERS

                              1. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich (1,154) needs one win to match Phil Jackson for sixth on the all-time list.

                              2. Pacers C Myles Turner (neck, concussion) sat out his fourth straight game on Wednesday and is day-to-day.

                              3. San Antonio took both meetings last season and six of the last seven in the series.

                              PREDICTION: Spurs 106, Pacers 91
