The Atlanta Braves had not produced much success against the Philadelphia Phillies this year until late last month, but they have a chance to end the season series with five straight victories. The Braves can finish a three-game sweep and win for the fourth straight time overall when they host the National League East rival Phillies on Sunday afternoon to complete their home schedule.

Johan Camargo delivered a pinch-hit, two-run double in the eighth inning to break a tie and Atlanta went on to earn a 4-2 victory Saturday while the rookie infielder improved to 17-for-43 with eight RBIs in 13 games this month. Rookie left-hander Luiz Gohara goes after his second career victory when he takes the mound for the Braves in the finale and Philadelphia counters with righty Nick Pivetta, who is 2-0 against Atlanta this year. The Phillies (61-94), who won 12 of the first 14 in the season series, have dropped three in a row overall after winning eight of their previous 11 contests and are in a four-way battle to avoid finishing with the worst record in baseball. Philadelphia’s rookie Rhys Hoskins registered an RBI double Saturday for his only hit of the series and has not homered in nine consecutive games after going deep 18 times in his first 34 major-league contests.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Nick Pivetta (6-10, 6.57 ERA) vs. Braves LH Luiz Gohara (1-2, 6.06)

Pivetta won for just the second time in nine starts Monday when he held the Los Angeles Dodgers to two runs on four hits over six innings with eight strikeouts. The 24-year-old Canadian rookie boasts 129 strikeouts in 122 innings but has given up 25 homers in 24 games and owns a 7.29 ERA on the road. Camargo (three RBIs) and Ender Inciarte (two walks) are both 2-for-4 against Pivetta this season.

Gohara makes his fourth career start after permitting four runs on 11 hits across a season-high 6 1/3 innings with four strikeouts on Tuesday in a loss to Washington. The 21-year-old Brazilian posted his first career quality start on Sept. 13 in his second outing when he yielded two runs (one earned) over six innings at Washington. Gohara has struck out 16 in 16 1/3 innings with just four walks and one homer allowed among 21 hits.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Inciarte recorded his 194th hit of the season Saturday, pulling him within six of becoming the first Brave to reach 200 since Marquis Grissom (1996).

    2. Philadelphia CF Odubel Herrera is 0-for-16 over his last four games with seven strikeouts, dropping his batting average to .224 in September.

    3. Atlanta 1B Freddie Freeman, who is two home runs shy of second straight 30-homer season, missed Saturday’s game due to illness and is considered day-to-day.

    PREDICTION: Phillies 6, Braves 4

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (81-73) at Pittsburgh Pirates (70-85)
        DATE/TIME: Sunday, September 24 - 1:35 PM EST
        WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

        Preview: Cardinals at Pirates

        Gracenote
        Sep 24, 2017

The St. Louis Cardinals will have a chance to make up ground with head-to-head contests against their chief competition in the National League Central next week, but they need to prevent the hole they are in from getting any deeper. The Cardinals wrap up a three-game road series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, hoping to hold their ground in the division as well as in the wild-card race.

St. Louis had a four-game winning streak snapped with an 11-6 loss Saturday in which starter Lance Lynn was tagged for eight runs and didn’t get out of the first inning. The Cardinals are five games back of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central and 1 1/2 behind Colorado for the second NL wild-card. St. Louis plays its final seven games at home – four against the Cubs and three against second-place Milwaukee. The Pirates are reduced to playing spoiler, as Saturday’s win was only their third in the past 16 games.
TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), ATT SportsNet-Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH John Gant (0-0, 3.86 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (7-7, 4.73)
Gant will take his first turn of the season for the Cardinals after five relief appearances. The 25-year-old made seven starts for the Braves in 2016 and allowed three earned runs or fewer in five of them. Gant has made two relief appearances in his career against the Pirates, allowing two runs (one earned) over 2 1/3 innings.
Taillon is winless in his last six outings and has a 5.46 ERA and only one quality start over that stretch. The 25-year-old was a victim of poor run support Monday, as he allowed two runs over five-plus innings in a 3-0 loss to Milwaukee. Taillon is 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA in four starts against the Cardinals.

        WALK-OFFS
        1. St. Louis OF Tommy Pham is 12-for-27 during a six-game hitting streak and hit his 22nd home run Saturday.
        2. The Pirates were 7-for-14 with runners in scoring position Saturday and are 9-for-23 in such situations in the series.
        3. Cardinals 1B Jose Martinez will be unavailable for the series finale due to a sprained left thumb.

        PREDICTION: Pirates 7, Cardinals 5

            Sep 24, 2017

The Tampa Bay Rays need a lot of help and a near-perfect finish to reach the postseason, but they are intent on ending 2017 strong as they go for a series victory against the host Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. Tampa Bay is five games behind Minnesota for the American League’s second wild card with seven to play but flexed its muscles by scoring 17 runs while winning its last two contests.

The Rays went deep twice to set a franchise record with 218 homers - topping last year’s 216 - in a 9-6 victory on Saturday and Chris Archer will try to turn his month around when he takes the mound for the series finale. Baltimore counters with ace Dylan Bundy, but it was eliminated from playoff consideration Saturday after losing for the 14th time in 17 games despite a five-run rally in the ninth inning. The Orioles will finish under .500 for the first time since 2011 and must put together a few wins over their final six games to avoid finishing last in the AL East. Rookie Trey Mancini has been a major bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season for Baltimore and is riding a 13-game hitting streak during which he is 18-for-54.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), MASN2 (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Chris Archer (9-11, 4.02 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Dylan Bundy (13-9, 4.24)

Archer recorded his first quality start in four outings this month on Tuesday, when he allowed two runs over six innings in a 2-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs. The 28-year-old, who is 4-7 lifetime against the Orioles, is 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA this month after combining to post a 3.26 ERA over July and August while going 3-2. Jonathan Schoop is 8-for-22 versus Archer, who is 11 strikeouts away from matching the career high of 252 he set in 2015 and 7 2/3 innings from his third straight with 200.

Bundy is winless in his last three starts after giving up six runs and seven hits over 4 1/3 innings of a no-decision against Boston on Monday. The 24-year-old Oklahoma native still has produced six quality starts in his last eight outings, serving up five homers in that span after permitting 21 in his first 20 appearances. Eva Longoria (13 at-bats) and Logan Morrison (12) have each gone deep twice versus Bundy, who is 1-1 with a 5.19 ERA in three starts against the Rays in 2017.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Tampa Bay C Wilson Ramos, who belted a grand slam on Friday, is 15-for-34 with four homers and 12 RBIs over his last 10 games.

            2. Baltimore CF Adam Jones is 7-for-16 in his last four games while teammate 3B Manny Machado has hit safely in six straight contests.

            3. Rays RHP Alex Colome, who notched his 46th save Saturday, is two shy of the franchise's single-season record set in 2012 by Fernando Rodney.

            PREDICTION: Rays 4, Orioles 3

The Kansas City Royals are clinging to American League wild card hopes and cannot afford any more losses. The Royals will try to take advantage of a team well out of the race and earn a series win when they visit the Chicago White Sox for the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday.

Kansas City squandered a four-run lead in Friday's series opener but recovered with an 8-2 win on Saturday and sits 4 1/2 games behind the Minnesota Twins in the race for the second AL wild card. "We've got to win," Royals manager Ned Yost told reporters. "(Friday's loss) made the mountain we're climbing a lot steeper. Wish we had won that. Minnesota has to next play Cleveland, which is red hot. We just got to win." The White Sox are a half-game ahead of the Detroit Tigers in the race to stay out of the AL Central basement and just looking for steps forward from young players like Yoan Moncada, who scored at least one run in each of the last five games and nine of 10. Chicago is hoping righty Lucas Giolito is a future cornerstone of the rotation, and he will make the start on Sunday opposite Royals righty Ian Kennedy.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Ian Kennedy (4-12, 5.39 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Lucas Giolito (2-3, 2.58)

Kennedy has not won since July 26 and failed to complete six innings in any of his last six contests. The California native lasted five frames at Toronto on Tuesday, allowing two runs and three hits while absorbing the loss. Kennedy last pitched at Chicago on Aug. 12 and was reached for three runs and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings without factoring in the decision.

Giolito is winless in his last three outings despite surrendering six earned runs in 18 1/3 innings over that span. The 23-year-old scattered two runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 frames at Houston on Tuesday but was stuck with the loss in a 3-1 final. Giolito started at Kansas City on Sept. 13, yielding one run and four hits across 6 1/3 innings without factoring in the decision.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. White Sox 1B Jose Abreu reached 25 home runs and 100 RBIs for the fourth straight season with a pair of RBIs on Saturday.

                2. Kansas City C Salvador Perez is 12-for-26 in his last seven contests.

                3. Chicago RF Avisail Garcia is 3-for-18 over his last six games.

PREDICTION: White Sox 5, Royals 2

The Brewers snapped a three-game skid with a 4-3 win Saturday, at least temporarily keeping alive their hopes of catching the Cubs in the National League Central.

The Cubs would have been going for a sweep if not for Orlando Arcia’s game-tying home run off Wade Davis in the ninth inning Saturday, which led to Travis Shaw’s game-winning two-run shot in the 10th - also off Davis. Milwaukee had been 0-54 when trailing after eight innings, and their first ninth-inning comeback couldn’t have come at a better time. The two-game swing in the standings pulled the Brewers within 4 1/2 games of the Cubs in the division and one behind Colorado for the second NL wild card. The Cubs will try to win a fifth consecutive game started by left-hander Jose Quintana.
TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, TBS, ABC 7 (Chicago), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jose Quintana (10-11, 4.27 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Chase Anderson (11-3, 2.74)
Quintana is 6-3 with a 3.95 ERA in 12 starts since the Cubs acquired him from the crosstown White Sox. The 28-year-old Colombian had a streak of three straight quality starts snapped Sunday against St. Louis, as he exited after 5 2/3 innings having allowed three runs with eight strikeouts. Quintana is 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA in three career starts against Milwaukee.
Anderson has been outstanding in 10 home starts, going 5-0 with a 2.34 ERA. The 29-year-old continued his breakout campaign by winning his third straight start Tuesday at Pittsburgh, striking out eight over six scoreless frames. Anderson beat the Cubs on Sept. 9 in Chicago and is 3-1 with a 3.68 ERA in six career meetings.

                    WALK-OFFS
                    1. Davis had converted all 32 save chances this season and 38 straight dating to last September.
                    2. Brewers LF Ryan Braun has multiple hits in five of his past eight games and is batting .364 with four doubles, a triple, and two homers during that stretch.
                    3. Cubs 2B/OF Ben Zobrist is 5-for-11 with a double and a homer against Anderson.

                    PREDICTION: Brewers 4, Cubs 3

The red-hot Oakland Athletics have been putting a damper on the Texas Rangers' postseason hopes and look to continue playing spoiler when they host the finale of their three-game set on Sunday. Texas entered the series 2 1/2 games behind Minnesota for the second wild-card spot in the American League but has fallen 4 1/2 back with eight remaining following two straight losses.

The Rangers dropped a 4-1 decision in the series opener and managed just four singles in Saturday's 1-0 setback as they fell to 4-4 on their nine-game road trip. Carlos Gomez recorded one of the base hits and is 4-for-10 in three contests after missing some time with an ankle injury. Oakland extended its winning streak to six games with Saturday's triumph and has captured seven in a row at home. Khris Davis went deep in the victory to reach the 40-homer plateau for the second consecutive season, joining Jimmie Foxx (1932-34) as the only players in franchise history to do so, and set a career high with his 103rd RBI of the year.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), NBCSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Martin Perez (12-11, 4.70 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Jharel Cotton (8-10, 5.81)

Perez won seven consecutive starts before a pair of outings against Seattle that resulted in a home loss and a no-decision on the road. The 26-year-old Venezuelan allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings in the setback on Sept. 13 but was much better at Seattle on Tuesday, when he gave up just one run and four hits over 6 1/3 frames. Perez split two turns against Oakland in April and is 6-6 with a 5.03 ERA in 14 career starts.

Cotton is ready to make his first start since Sept. 13 as he was scratched from his previously scheduled outing due to a groin strain. The 25-year-old Virgin Islander recorded a victory in his most recent turn despite allowing three runs and six hits in five innings at Boston. Cotton had one of his best performances of the year against Texas on Aug. 27, when he gave up two runs - one earned - and four hits while matching a season high with nine strikeouts over six frames to improve to 2-1 in three career outings versus the club.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. The Athletics, who have won 13 of their last 16 overall games, still play five of their final eight games against Texas.

                        2. Rangers bench coach Steve Buechele will serve as interim manager for a second straight game as Jeff Banister flew home to Texas to be with his ailing mother.

                        3. Oakland LHP Sean Manaea was scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday due to tightness in his upper back and also could miss his next turn.

                        PREDICTION: Rangers 8, Athletics 3

                            WNBA Finals History – 1997-2016

-- The league went to a best-of-five format during the 2005 season. In the 12 series, we’ve seen five sweeps (3-0), four matchups go to a decisive Game 7 and three series end in four games (3-1).

-- The Sparks have won the WNBA Championship three times, including last year’s victory over Minnesota.

-- The previous title for the Sparks came in 20012 when the franchise pulled off the rare repeat.

-- Los Angeles failed to three-peat in 2003 as it was defeated by the now defunct Detroit Shock.

-- Since the 2011 season, Minnesota has won three championships and finished runner-up twice. The victories included two sweeps.

-- The Lynx have alternated titles the last six years and if that trend continues, they’ll be champions this seasons.
