The Thundering Herd of Marshall had a remarkable season by any standards. Many fans of the West Virginia school are disappointed they weren’t matched up in a bigger bowl game against a more well-known opponent. Marshall is set to play in the Boca Raton Bowl against Northern Illinois. They were 12-1 on the year, with their only loss coming to Western Kentucky. For those unfamiliar, Western Kentucky had the 3rd best average yards per game running average in the nation, and the 6th highest average scoring offense. The Herd lost that game by just a single point in overtime, 67-66. Marshall is ranked 5th nationally in rushing averaging over 275 yards per game on the ground, putting them at 5th in the country. Offense is the key for Marshall and think the Thundering Herd put an exclamation point on a great season with big output in Boca Raton Bowl. The MAC had down year which makes us believe that Northern Illinois has little chance at pulling upset. Take Marshall
6 Unit Play Take #705 New Orleans -1 over Indiana (7:05pm est):
Much better Western Conference squad here with New Orleans who if they were in the Eastern Conference would be an above average team this season but are somehow in last place in thei NBA Southwest division despite being above .500 overall on the season. They come into this one playing some decent basketball of late with a win over the red hot Oklahoma City Thunder in their last game which was on the road. They covered over a solid Houston team in the road game before that as well and had 2 more point spread covers in the two previous away games making them 4-0 against the number in their last 4 road contests. The Pelicans have also covered their last 3 games versus teams from the Eastern Conference and overall have played the 2nd toughest schedule to date in the NBA.
The Pacers return home here after 3 straight road contests. They are coming in off a win but that was over a bad Minnesota squad which I think helps our cause in this one also. If you look at the top 16 teams in the NBA (a spot where New Orleans is at right now), Indiana is just 2-15 this season versus those squads. The Pacers are also just 5-8 at home on the year and 4-11 versus teams from the Western Confernece and those 3 of those 4 wins were over Minnesota, LA Lakers and Utah which are the 3 worst teams in the Conference.

Poinsettia Bowl 20 Units Navy 7-5 SU, 5-7 ATS) +3 over SAN DIEGO STATE (7-5 SU, 6-5-1 ATS) Prediction: Navy by 7 Played at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego Starting Time: 9:35 EST TV: ESPN COMMENTS: This game is being played on San Diego State’s home field and that is the only advantage the Aztecs have. Everything else falls Navy’s way. The most important edge for the Midshipman is the simple fact they come to play and win. And then there is that triple option offense Navy runs—and it befuddles every opponent who seldom sees it. Navy was playing its best at the end of the season, going 5-1 in its last six games with the only loss coming to Notre Dame, 49-39, on a neutral field in Baltimore.

6:00 PM --
Boca Raton Bowl 10 Units Northern Illinois (11-2 SU, 7-6 ATS) +9.5 over Marshall (12-1 SU, 7-5-1 ATS) Prediction: Marshall by 3-4 Played at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, FL Starting Time: 6:05 EST TV: ESPN COMMENTS: The inaugural Boca Raton Bowl matches the champions of the Mid-American Conference (Northern Illinois) and of the American Athletic Conference (Marshall). The Boca Raton Bowl matches up two of the best running attacks in the nation, with each team ranking in the top 20 in rushing yards per game. The seventh-ranked Thundering Herd are led by Devon Johnson, a junior who has rushed for 1,636 yards and 16 TDs this season, although he has been limited to seven carries for 63 yards in the last two weeks due to a shoulder injury. The Huskies rank 14th nationally in rushing with a balanced attack led by Cameron Stingily (895 yards, 13 TDs) and quarterback Drew Hare (850 yards, eight TDs). On paper these two teams seem evenly matched, which makes Northern Illinois the choice. And then there is the issue of the elephant in the room. While no one from Marshall will admit it the Thundering Herd is disappointed to be playing in this bowl game. They were on their way to a perfect 13-0 season and a major New Year’s Day bowl when they were upset by Western Kentucky 67-66, sending that hope crashing to the ground. We will see a lot of offense in this game and there is even a chance Northern Illinois could win straight.
Partly cloudy. Winds southeast at 10-15 m.p.h (Boca Raton, FL) Game-time temperature: Around 75.
