2011 Off topic thread(basketball,movies,etc whatever)
One of my favorite things in the whole wide world is when someone walks into the academy with a bb in JJJ or some other entertaining TMA. There was a fat ninja guy once that kept wearing his BB for weeks. They all stop coming after a couple weeks though, all of them. Most never return after one day.
That probably makes me a douche, but what are you going to do.
I don't have any problem whatsoever if someone wants to train shoto Ryu Aikido or whatever. None. I train for fun, not self defense. And it would be hypocritical to mock their overall ability and lack of sparring skill, while ignoring the fact that we don't train with strikes. If they enjoy what they are doing, they should keep doing it. It just irks me when TMA guys try to act like they are deadly killers.

I agree.
It's a big thing for muay Thai guys to rag on any striking art that's not MT, saying that other styles' sparring rules are not as realistic, that other styles are not full contact, that other styles, use too much padding, etc.
But not everyone who does martial arts is doing it to be a professional fighter. A lot of people are just doing it for fun, or doing it because they appreciate the sporting side of it. I talked to a TKD guy the other day on Sherdog who isn't interested in doing MMA. Olympic TKD is his thing and that's all he wants to do.

I'll be the first to agree that most TMA guys can't fight for shit. But there's always going to be that small component of guys who are really serious and who "get" their art and are actually pretty bad ass. For instance, I think those guys in that Shotokan vid I posted the other day could probably fuck a lot of dudes up.
I think this post illustrates the situation pretty well. Just substitute Kung Fu with something else.
