Originally posted by MMAJunkie.comA key welterweight matchup is in the works between Thiago Alves (19-8 MMA, 11-5 UFC) and Martin Kampmann (18-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC).
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has confirmed with sources close to the fighters that verbal agreements are in place for the matchup, which is expected to take place at an as-yet-unannounced March 3 event.
The matchup was first reported by MMAWeekly.com.
Alves looks to build on the strength of a UFC 138 submission win over the previously unbeaten Papy Abedi. The popular American Top Team product is just 2-3 in his past five outings, but that run includes losses to UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, perennial contender Jon Fitch and recent up-and-comer Rick Story.
Meanwhile, Kampmann recently snapped a two-fight losing streak with a UFC 139 decision win over Story. The impressive win came on the heels of two controversial decision losses to Diego Sanchez and Jake Shields.2013: +8.24u(increased unit size on 5/19)

Thiago Alves-Martin Kampmann said set
Former welterweight contenders Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann have agreed to meet on March 3, a source with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com on Wednesday.
UFC has not yet officially announced the fight.
Alves has struggled to find consistency since dropping a unanimous decision to 170-pound champion Georges St. Pierre in July 2009 at UFC 100. He is 2-2 in his last four fights.
But Alves (19-8) looked sharp on Nov. 5, when he beat Papy Abedi by submission at UFC 138.
The win earned Alves a shot at Kampmann (18-5), who, on Nov. 19, defeated Rick Story in an impressive unanimous decision at UFC 139 to end a two-fight losing skid.
Neither Alves nor Kampmann currently is ranked among the top 10 welterweights by ESPN.com.

Who is ranked if not either of them? I realize Alves has slipped a bit but to drop him out of the top 10 completely? Welterweight gets pretty thin after the 6th or 7th guy as it is.2013: +8.24u(increased unit size on 5/19)

I don't think neither of them being in the top 10 is incorrect.I'd put Diaz,GSP,Penn, MacDonald,Fitch,Rumble,KOS,Shields,Ellenberger, and Condit ahead of both of them and could probably find more if I thought about it.2015 MMA BETTING CHAMP

I disagree about Macdonald and Rumble. Aside from Hardy and Brenneman who has Rumble ever beaten? Not to mention he's making his debut in another weight class in just two months. MacDonald hasn't beaten anyone aside from Nate Diaz and Mike Pyle, neither of whom were even close to top ten when he beat them. So we have GSP, Fitch, Koscheck, Ellenberger, Shields, Diaz, Condit, Penn, and???2013: +8.24u(increased unit size on 5/19)

For the record, I think that if Kampmann is not top 10 then he's 11 or 12.
He beat the shit out of Diego, just didn't have enough "Octagon control." And the Shields fight was really close as well.
The judges easily could've gone the other way on either fight, and if they had, no one would even question that he's top 10, especially after having just beat Story.I heart cockComment
