I meant Karo/Ishii as guy's with judo, not necessarily that they have not translated it... Karo has made his judo work, some guys don't. Judo gets a bad rap because a lot of the pure judo guys are not seen as being as good at takedowns as the wrestlers. But I think this has more to do with judo mindset than anything. People forget that Maia and Jacare are judokas too... Jacare was a judo guy before he was a bjj guy. His takedowns have worked quite well in mma. I always make sure to mention Jacare in my judo players in MMA set.

I didn't known Maia and Jacare are judo-trained. Although I can see it in Maia's case in the Sonnen fight with the way he got him to the ground.

As for Rosholt, if you can't pick up submission defense, I count that as not translating it. Its like saying some bjj guy has translated his bjj well, if only he could get takedowns. He can't, so it doesn't matter.

Hmm. . . I guess I more see it like a BJJ guy who gets lit up on the feet.

^^ fairly certain they are both blackbelts in judo too. Most of the oldschool bjj studs are judo blackbelts... little known fact, judo is more popular than bjj in Brazil. A lot of the kids train judo. And most of the academies cross train with judo or wrestling. Despite what most people think, most bjj guys do work diligently on their takedowns, but it just looks shitty when you are fighting someone better at them. Perfect example is watch Galvao's highlights, he has beautiful judo. He hits big air throws all the time. But against Woodley, he looked like he never worked a takedown in his life.

I would have never guessed that Judo is more popular than BJJ in Brazil. Half the time I'm surprised BJJ isn't the national sport already!

^ It is funny, because basically every Brazilian we are familiar with is a fighter or bjj player. They don't export a lot of other stuff here, acai berries and Zumba.

BUt I talked to a Brazilian girl once that was not connected to bjj. And she was familiar with Gracie and jiu jitsu about the same way my wife is... she knew she had heard of it, but that was it.
