I thought it would be the other way 29-28. The last 2:30 Melvin didn't do a whole lot.... The last :04 he did.
He landed all the shots in the third and when Torres had him down he didn't do a whole lot with it.
It's a good point... to what extent is everything weighted? Melvin landed shots and Torres took them... but Torres seemed to be all over Melvin, taking him down, working for control. I just thought that would make up for some of the standup . .
Anyway...
To me, control and useless takedowns are definitely overshadowed by damage and powerful strikes. If Torres had been running a grappling train on Melvin and been throwing up all kinds of submission attempts, you'd have a good argument for him winning. But honestly, I only remember seeing the one kimura/straight armbar attempt. As it stands, Torres had some takedowns and control, but the rounds were stolen by Melvin snapping his head back on multiple occasions with all manner of punchs, kicks, and knees.

That makes sense to me... had Torres thrown another sub attempt or two in the takedowns, there'd be more of an argument. . .

I would have liked to see Gracie and Davis fight tonight. Just from a marketing standpoint, it would have been a good debut for both of them. Obviously, I thought that BEFORE I knew the results.
Personally I wouldn't touch Serra at those odds, I think Trigg is being very much underestimated. Serra has only fought once a year for the last five years or so, he has said on numerous occasions he would rather train than compete in MMA(grappling tournaments not withstanding). I would put a last minute bet on Couture if the line isn't outrageous. Look for Swick if there's still a decent line out there though, I think he's going to surprise people tonight.
