That 98 fig this filly registered in her last affair tells me she's a major player in today's event. ALPHA BELLA - Pletcher has an 'uncoupled' entry here. Best to watch out for the longer priced half. Saez and his horse make quite a tandem. Together they've been winning at a clip of 50 percent. You probably should toss that last race at Belmont at the Big A on the soft turf where she finished off the board. Should do well right here in this race without the slop. IMPLICATED - I seem to always make money betting Brown horses on the grass. That barn has a solid win pct for this distance/surface. I like a pony that manages to finish in the money as often as this filly. Almost always in the money so don't leave her out of your exotic bets. CAIRO CONSORT - A filly like this one, almost always on the board, usually makes an excellent trifecta key horse. This filly has impressed last two times out posting strong speed figs. With a repeat performance, she'll probably win this race. Ortiz and his horse make quite a tandem. Together they've been winning at a clip of 50 percent. STARTUP MENTALITY (IRE) - Brown is great in grass routes. This equine should have no justifications if she doesn't win. Came home in quick time last time around the track. A positive sign.

Gowell Stakes | Purse $125,000 | Six Furlongs | Fillies, Two Years Old

Analysis and top win contenders:

Trial (9) was extremely impressive in her debut on November 18, showing not only a lot of ability but the mental attitude of a horse with experience, although she had none before that race. Breaking eighth of 10 at the same six furlong distance of this race, Trial was about nine lengths behind after a quarter mile had been run when she began to lengthen her stride. Still fifth and six lengths behind the leader with a quarter mile to run, she began to pick up tempo and put in a very strong rally to win by almost two lengths at the end. She gets the same post position for this race and that will allow her to stay out of traffic trouble while at least five, and up to seven, of the other horses all try for the lead in the opening quarter mile, with at least a couple battling through the lead for the opening half-mile while those in a stalking position are forced to go too fast by pressing the pace. Since the race, Trial has put in two workouts on the all-weather surface at Turfway for a solid trainer in Tom Drury (18% wins on the year), the most recent the 11th fastest of 136 on the day for a half-mile, which is very strong for a two year old. As such, Trial is sending all the right signals to improve and win again.

Candi Girl has run four times, two on turf, one on dirt, and most importantly one on all-weather. That effort on all-weather came at Turfway Park just 15 day ago and was good enough for high percentage trainer Brad Cox to decide to wheel her back quickly in this stakes race. That effort on December 8 also came following nearly three months off so there’s room to improve as well second off the layoff. Jockey Concepcion had decided to make Turfway his home for the meet and has been quite impressive in winning 11 of 56 races (20%) so far, including three of five for Cox, one of those aboard this filly. She closed from fourth of 10 to finish second in her debut in July so even though she won after racing close up in second in the early stages two weeks ago, she may not get caught up in the likely hot and contested early pace scenario, making her a strong contender to win in this field.

Julias Dream (3) ships in from California for excellent trainer Mike McCarthy, off a win at five furlongs on turf. She won at the same distance on grass in her debut in August, with her only poor race on conventional dirt. Good efforts on turf often translate very well to similarly good efforts on all-weather, and in that last win on November 10, Julias Dream showed some mental fortitude in being passed after leading past the half-mile mark, staying second for another quarter mile, then asserting herself in the final strides. Red hot jockey Machado (24% wins at the meet to date) takes the mount and like Candi Girl, Julias Dream fits as a contender here if she doesn’t get involved in the likely hot and contested early pace.

With a slightly lesser chance to win than the three above, Pipit (8) can be considered a contender, at the least for any exacta and trifecta tickets we play in this race. She wanted no part of a two-turn race last month when seventh of eight in the Grade 3 Grey Stakes at Woodbine but her previous three starts, all sprints, were excellent efforts, particularly her only win to date in July. In that race Pipit sat last of four and about five lengths off a moderate early pace before moving up nicely on the turn to get the lead into the stretch before drawing off by four lengths. That effort came in a non-graded stakes just like this one, making her the ONLY stakes winner in the field and the cut back to one turn certainly helps her chances to run well.

The five horses I think will contest the early pace and get tired after battling for the lead are Baraye (1), who has to go from the rail as fast as possible so as not to let any horses get in front of her, Logistics (2), who also draws inside and has to be sent to the lead, Leslie’s Loot (6), Secret Glenda (10) and Pinotslilgirl (11).

Bets:

Win: I think if this race were run as-is 100 times, the three main contenders – Trial (9), Candi Girl (7) and Julia’s Dream (3) – would win around 75 of those hundred races.

Therefore each has a 25% chance to win and that equals 3 to 1 fair odds for win bets on any of the three. I would say if two of the three are 4 to 1 or more, then betting on both is a good idea.

#6 Private Creed There have been a lot of really deep turf sprint stakes here over the years, but I'm not sure this is one of them, and this guy has recent credentials that make him tough if he can just hold form.
#4 Just Might He's definitely not what he was a couple years back, but he can still show some sharp pace from time to time, and there is still a little punch in him -- he was only a length and change off the Breeders' Cup winner at Horseshoe Indianapolis this summer. Maybe.
#9 Sosua Summer Think those Saratoga tries from the summer would keep him in the frame, but that was really peak form that he hasn't quite duplicated elsewhere. Wouldn't argue much with anyone landing here.

Race Summary Private Creed is an honest finisher who probably find a decent spot not too far off the splits today, but he can be placed almost anywhere out of the gate and owns a Grade I placing at this trip. Think he'll handle these.

#5 Legadema Wonder if she might be the real deal after a sharp debut run, and she looks to get a pretty positive race flow today while stretching out in a spot that doesn't appear to have a lot of other early burn.
#6 West Omaha She has enough pace to keep up with the top choice early, and they may end up in a cat-and-mouse game on the backstretch that could decide this one. The main worry.
#3 Sistina Chapel Honest finisher got around two turns nicely enough in those last couple tries, and that kind of baseline effort seems good enough to at least make her a late player if the top two hook up.

Race Summary Legadema has to stretch that 5 1/2-furlong sprint pace around two turns, but I think she can control the tempo in here and might still have some upside.

#4 Neat Little bit of intrigue here while trying the dirt for the first time, as he was sharp in the graduation run and backed it up with an easy score here on the turf last month. He's obviously a talented turf horse with a future, but I don't blame the barn for wanting to find out about him at this time of year on the main track. I'll take a chance.
#2 Catching Freedom It's a two-deep race for me with these two. This guy had a nightmare trip last time out at even money -- it was actually pretty dreamy up to the quarter pole, but he never found a way through and was on and off heels the rest of the way while seemingly full of run. There might still be a lot of upward trajectory here.
#6 Nash He's probably supposed to drill these if the November Churchill score was any indication of what's coming next, but I'm hoping the guy drawn widest will be breathing down his neck the whole way. I'm going to try to beat him, but I'm interested to see what he's made of on the rise.

Race Summary Nash will be the buzz here -- he rolled home to graduate last time out and might control this one throughout. Catching Freedom is a really obvious trip note horse off his last, and Neat tries the main off a sharp turf score for a sire whose runners are typically about 3% better on the dirt than turf. Worth a shot.

Northern Illinois played a very weak schedule of opposing offenses this season to suppress their numbers. When they stepped up in class, they gave up 35 points to Toledo and 35 to Nebraska. I think Arkansas State will hang a big number on this overrated defense.

The weather looks good for a shootout in the Camellia Bowl with temps in the 60's and only 5 MPH winds expected at kickoff in Montgomery, Alabama. Northern Illinois is 6-0 OVER in its last six games away from home played on turf. Thomas Hammock is 9-2 OVER in road games after playing a game where 60 or more combined points per scored. Both of these teams are coming off a loss and both have been struggling over the course of the month. They're still averaging an impressive 47 made field goals per game this season. Meanwhile, Indiana has allowed 12 straight opponents to connect on 43 or more field goals. Everyone scores on the Pacers and the Magic were no exception earlier this season as they hung 128 points on Indiana on this floor on November 19th. UConn has won 25 of their last 27 home games and this team ranks in the top 20 in both offensive and defensive efficiency. They are also one of the top offensive rebounding teams in the nation (7th) which should give them some extra opportunities vs STJ who ranks 278th in defensive rebounding. UConn is 6-0 at home winning by an average score of 94-60 and we like them to take care of a transition St John’s team with nearly all transfers in their rotation. Lay it.
