Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    June 26, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway begins the week with an 11-race card. The 0.50 Pick 5 starts in Race 5 and has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 rolls in Race 8, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

3-Rock Diamonds N (3-1)-Team Jen-Joe entry is seeking its 7th straight picture. Won at 1-1/16th in last and made it look easy wiring the field so the 1 1/4 might not pose an issue. Could make every call a winning one again but the one below should have something to say.
4-Anothermasterpiece N (2-1)-Tritton entry made it looks easy last time as well and cruised home in an extended distance event. It will be interesting to see which one of these two settles for the pocket ride and they should be battling to the wire.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

6-Covered Bridge (5/2)-Beat this kind in last coming off cover to roll by at 3/5. Can't see the price being 5/2 but should be better than 3/5 and this field can be had in the same fashion. The 3 inside horses are stepping up, and there should be a fight to see who lands on the point as a few have good gate speed. The factions should be plenty hot, and Stratton usually does a great job of putting the Gillis trainee in striking range to get up at the wire.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

2-Speed Man N (5/2)-Usually is in play early and at this level should land on the point. With this post draw shouldn't have any excuse for not being able to seal the deal but can't completely trust.
5-Shine A Light (3-1)-The Engblom barn has cooled off and recent form has been dull. But could wake-up on the drop and might be overlooked at the windows in what appears to be a very chalky sequence.
6-Funatthebeach (3-1)-The last three haven't been great tries, bad posts, tough trips and just hasn't been at the top of his game. Drops to a spot to shine, should be bet and could roll by this crew with a smooth trip.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

1-Odds On Capitalism (2-1)-This sequence should finish the way it started with the 2 chalks slugging it out for top honors. Something isn't right with this 4-year-old but almost wired the same kind from the 8-hole last time. The winner of over $192,000 in 2022 could be on the engine again and may take its 1st picture this year (0-6).
3-RJ Sports Image (5/2)-Led from start to finish versus easier last time and now steps up. Has the gate speed to be on the point or in the pocket behind the one above. Doesn't have the back class of #1 but did draw off by over 7-lengths and was simply racing against the clock. Bartlett gets the assignment and that is a positive driver change so best to respect chances of doubling up.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    3,4/6/2,5,6/1,3
    Total Bet=$12

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#1 Orphan Exchange She showed a little pace before fading in the debut run, but that came with a better special weight bunch and might set her up for something better this time around. Tennessee-bred in with a chance.
#9 Ana L She woke up a bit when trying claiming company last time out, and the extra drop today might make her tough. She showed a little finishing ability last out that should serve her well in a race without many others who want to stay on late. Tough.
#6 Cairo Winner She'll try the local crew for the first time after failing to stack up with similar in Florida, but I'm not sure this sharper one-turn trip is her best game anyway. Wouldn't surprise on the move north, but not a whole lot of enthusiasm here for me.
Race Summary Orphan Exchange has some room to improve with the debut run under her belt, and she might be a bit more involved early with the addition of blinkers this time around.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
#5 Cantstealmythunder Nothing really wrong with the debut run in which he showed the way before settling for second, and he's the clear one to beat right back today if he has any room to come forward off that first run. Not sure you need to overthink this one.
#1 R Admiral He fits on overall form, but he has had a lot of chances already and doesn't have much upside at this point in time except maybe the change of scenery today.
#4 Nathaniel's Hope He's a little cheap for these on paper, but the recent form is pretty solid, so maybe he can hold that form and land a piece of this tougher spot at a price.
Race Summary Cantstealmythunder caught a logical winner in that last one, and that effort gives him some room to improve while heading to post for the second time. Guessing he's going to hit hard.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#3 Emerald Citadelle She should be a price after a couple fades off the bench, but she isn't meeting a ton of serious other pace and might be able to sneak away early to hang around for a piece late. Maybe.
#8 Song of Indy She's the one to beat and should get a great trip right in behind the more committed speed, and she has some logical upside in the second start off the break. Can do.
#9 So Moxie Dropper has been in with better company in recent starts, and this kind of cheaper conditioned spot might be enough to give her a claim on a piece of this while getting past some of them late.
Race Summary Emerald Citadelle has some price appeal and might be good for a thrill in here. She's going to need to stick around a whole lot better than she has in recent starts, but maybe the other forward players won't breathe down her neck too much early today?

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Louisiana Downs - Race #2
#2 FIVE O FOX (9-2) Has speed, can travel the distance in second try at this level.
#5 NOBLE CONNECTION (5-2) Showed pulse at Churchill Downs, adds blinkers for new barn.
#7 BELLA’S GATSBY (2-1) Bid 3-wide to brief stretch lead, can return quick claim dividend.
Race Summary FIVE O FOX Stalked a ‘much the best’ 5-1 winner ran second in his first start locally at 6F. He led at the stretch call in two route races at Oaklawn Park and could take some catching in this spot. Bet to win and place.
        Louisiana Downs - Race #4
#1 LETSTAKEITOUTSIDE (7-2) Drops off layoff, shows two 5F bullet works, presumably with blinks on.
#4 OURQUICKDRAWMCGRAW (5-2) Stands 8/1-3-1 in most recent sprint attempts.
#2 GTUONEBUCK (8-1) Ranged up on 3-to-5 winner, settled for second best in five-horse field.
Race Summary LETSTAKEITOUTSIDE shied from a rival to his outside early and never recovered as the beaten favorite for $10,000 when last seen in February at the Fair Grounds. He plunges to the bottom level after facing the likes of recent allowance runaway Alexis S (3-10, $43k) and recent $7,500/nw3 runner-up Bankroll. Let’s make him today’s Best Bet.
        Louisiana Downs - Race #5
#1 CITY NIGHTS (2-1) Game try in defeat off layoff, strictly one to beat but wouldn’t expect 2-1.
#4 TAPIT TWICE (5-1) Left too much work after another slow start, trainer has +87% ROI in last month.
#6 LOOKIN AT BETTY (10-1) Passed more than half of field while wide in debut sprint, use in gimmicks.
Race Summary CITY NIGHTS won a hard duel from the second favorite, only to give way to the deep closers at 7-1/2F on the Lone Star Park lawn. If he runs like he did in his first start as a gelding, he should be in the winners’ circle. Play 1-4 and 1-6 exactas.

              # 6 LUCKY DUDE 3/1
              # 8 COLE SPUR 8/1
              # 7 ROBUST 12/1
I give my vote to LUCKY DUDE here. Has to be given consideration against this field displaying very strong figures lately and an average Equibase Speed Figure of 65 under similar conditions. Delacruz has been on fire the last month, winning at a nifty 18 percent clip. He has been running strongly and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the most favorable in this group. COLE SPUR - Is a definite contender - given the 72 Equibase speed fig from his most recent race. A solid 84 avg class fig may give this gelding a distinct class edge versus this group of animals. ROBUST - Could provide positive dividends based on formidable recent speed figures with an average of 65. When this rider and conditioner team up, gamblers often make money.

                Mountaineer Park - Race #4 - Post: 8:15pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $9,400 Class Rating: 65

                Rating:

                #2 SEA MONSTER (ML=5/1)
                #9 RED ROCKET GIRL (ML=8/1)
                #6 COACH MACHEN (ML=8/1)

SEA MONSTER - Batista comes to ride again after getting to know the mare in the last race. RED ROCKET GIRL - The Jun 13th event at Mountaineer Park was at a class level of (76). Dropping to a lower class rank drastically, so she should be in a good spot. Coming off a fourth place finish at Mountaineer Park, some may skip this horse. I'm not. She just missed hitting the show spot, and has pretty good M/L odds today. This animal didn't run well in the slop in her last start at Mountaineer Park. You probably should ignore that showing. COACH MACHEN - I think this mare is very ready right now. I like the fact that Ewell brings her back to a race so quickly. Always watch out for the longer priced horse when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. This mare is obviously on the improve with Equibase speed figures of 46, 50, 57 last three out. Have to like the way Ewell has raced this mare back into shape off the layoff. Animal is well spotted in this sprint and I think she'll run well today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 VINTAGE SPARKLE (ML=3/1), #5 BET THE QUEEN (ML=9/2), #7 ALITTLESLICEOF PIE (ML=5/1),

VINTAGE SPARKLE - Don't figure that this steed is worth 3/1 in this affair. BET THE QUEEN - You figure that this horse is going to finish first just because she's always close. Just doesn't win regularly. ALITTLESLICEOF PIE - Can't play this mount in today's sprint of 5 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a short distance race recently. You figure that this equine is going to finish first just because she's always close. Just doesn't finish first frequently. The effort last time around the track on October 29th probably won't hold up against stiffer competition when they turn for home. This filly earned a speed fig in her last race which likely isn't good enough in today's race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #2 SEA MONSTER on the nose if you can get odds of 5/2 or more

                  Louisiana Downs - Race #7 - Post: 4:53pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $15,000 Class Rating: 69

                  Rating:

                  #7 MIRI A COINCIDENCE (ML=8/1)
                  #2 RUNANDHIDE WIND (ML=5/1)

MIRI A COINCIDENCE - Was in a $10,000 Claiming race at Oaklawn Park last out. That event had a class number of 78 and he is moving down in this field. A certain strong challenger. Just check out his recent speed fig, 71. That one fits in this bunch. RUNANDHIDE WIND - The August 3rd event at Delaware Park was at a class level of (85). Dropping down the ladder based on class rating points considerably, so he should be in a good position. Recent speed ratings show strong pattern of improvement.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #4 UPTOWN SOCIAL (ML=5/2), #9 AUX ARCS (ML=7/2), #3 MORO FLASHBACK (ML=4/1),

UPTOWN SOCIAL - You should normally gamble against chalk that haven't raced or show no activity in the morning over the last 3 weeks. AUX ARCS - Had a grueling stretch drive on May 5th and followed it up with another one. Probably won't see him doing it this time out. This gelding garnered a speed fig in his last affair which likely isn't good enough in today's race. MORO FLASHBACK - The speed figure in the last race doesn't fit very well in this contest when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's event. Mark this horse as a vulnerable competitor.

                    Race 3 - Trial - 330y on the Dirt. Purse: $2900 Class Rating: 81

QUARTER HORSE 330Y, TWO YEAR OLDS ELIGIBLE TO THE TRIALS. WEIGHT 124 LBS.

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 8 PAR T HAR D 6/1
                    # 5 APOLLITICAL STREAKIN 10/1
                    # 2 LIEBRITA 8/1
PAR T HAR D is my choice. Foals of this sire have given wagerers very strong profits in their first tries. He could prove much the best if bloodlines hold true. Respectable jockey and trainer combo winning 23 percent of their races working together. APOLLITICAL STREAKIN - Sire -Apollitical Blood- has produced progeny who have done well in their first efforts. Sire figs point to this filly being close at the wire. LIEBRITA - There is a formidable possibility of an increase in speed as this filly changes blinkers (on) for the first time. She looks very good in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the halfway point.
