Thistledown – 5th race: 7-Onasa (3-1). Post time: 1:52 ET

Developing with every start, this sophomore colt earned a career top speed figure when dismantling a maiden special weight field over a wet fast (officially labeled muddy) main track at Hawthorne in March with complete authority. Though moving up a notch after accompanying stable mate Two Phil’s on the 357 mile van ride from Chicago to North Randall, the Larry Rivelli-trained shipper should be able to successfully handle the tougher assignment. Freshened for three months but from a barn that hits at a superior 39% (plus a massive ROI) with the layoff angle, the son of Always Dreaming can step forward again while offering excellent wagering value at anywhere near his morning line of 3-1 in the win pool and in rolling exotic play.

Belmont Park – 6th race: 3-Luguria (7/2). Post time: 3:41 ET

We’re not sure how she will handle the potential softish footing due to the expected overnight rains, but we fully expect this lightly raced $275,000 Keeneland purchase to produce a career top performance in the listed Wild Applause Stakes after finishing fifth with a somewhat less than ideal trip in her seasonable bow in the Edgewood Stakes-G2 last month at Churchill Downs. Saving ground behind the leaders to the head of the lane, she lacked room briefly to lose some of her momentum before flattening out late to wind up fifth behind Heavenly Sunday but beaten just a length and one-half at the wire. She ran like a short horse, and just as she did last year when producing a significant forward move between her first and second races, we’re expecting the Chad Brown-trained sophomore to be fitter and stronger with that effort behind her. The Christophe Clement-trained Breath Aways is the likely favorite and the one to beat, but at 7/2 on the morning line this daughter of War Front is worth a reasonable gamble.

Gulfstream Park – 7th race: 1-Dreams Float (8/5). Post time: 3:54 ET

Here’s a talented first-time starter that appears ready to win right now in this two-turn maiden special weight all-weather affair restricted to 3-year-old fillies. The well-regarded daughter of Uncle Mo from stakes winning Martha’s Moon has done some very good work in the morning for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. in a series that includes a recent bullet drill (4f, :48.3b, fastest of 11) and several other morning moves that caught the eye. A leggy, lengthy filly that has “router” written all over her, this $230,000 Keeneland yearling purchase lands the favorable rail and really doesn’t have a whole lot to worry about from those that already have been exposed. At 8/5 on the morning line and likely to go even lower than that, she can be played as a confident single in the various rolling exotics.

The Americans

Big Invasion has won 6 stakes in the US and exits a runner-up just 14 days ago in the Grade 1 Jaipur at Belmont. Christophe Clement takes on a massive challenge in Race 3 Saturday, the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes. He’s hovering around 15 to 20-1 in the British books. Note American-based Undrafted won this event in 2015 at 14-1 odds. The Yanks have a victory in Tuesday’s Queen Mary by Crimson Advocate to boast so far. US interest in the Jubilee also includes the British-based Kinross, last seen when third in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland.

The Main Event

The $1 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes moves up on the card to Race 3, whereas most Royal Ascot features go as the day’s fourth. The 6-furlong sprint features Australian star Artorius, who is favored around 9-2 with the British bookmakers in a wide-open field of 16. He ran third in this race last year. Highfield Princess returns from just 4 days on the shelf, running second in Tuesday’s King’s Stand and looking to improve on a sixth-place effort in last year’s Jubilee. Kinross makes his seasonal debut and was a smashing course winner here last fall in the British Champions.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

The Meadowlands has a 14-race card scheduled and the headliners will compete in Graduate Series action. The 0.50 Early Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus. The weather forecast is calling for rain throughout the day. Comments and selections below are based on an off-track.

Race 6 (8:25 PM EST)

3-Pappardelle (6-1)-Team Joe-Jenn entry could be stretched out after an acclimating race and was used hard in the early going. Willing to take a swing at the morning line price that it could be picture time in the 2nd M1 start.
5-I'wont Backdown AS (4-1)-This is another 4-year-old that will be 2nd time Big M. Started from post 11 last time and did roll the 2nd half in a big way and finished with a 26.3 last panel. Should be a main player and hopefully won't be over bet.
6-Looks Like Moni (7/2)-Came out of the Jiggy Jog race like the one above. Also started from the 2nd tier, this time Zeron could land on the point and not look back.

Race 7 (8:50 PM EST)

2-Boiler Maker (9/2)-Broke in last but now Stratton is between the pipes, and he does well with this gelding. Could be sitting close to the lead throughout and should be rolling late at a solid price.
3-Nuttin But Finesse (5/2)-Comes off some rough trips against Open company at Stga and has hit the board in both starts here. Drops to a soft spot and should be in the hunt at the wire.
4-Lyons Pegasus (5-1)-This is the 2nd start after a sick scratch and draws well. There's little doubt Gingras will leave, and that plan has worked before at this level.

Race 8 (9:15 PM EST)

4-Pleaseletmeknow (5-1)-Just missed last time and was DQ'd from 2nd and placed 8th. Raced big, will look for another top try and could be better after a race on the surface.
5-Mad Max Hanover (8/5)-Left from post 9, worked hard to get on the point and never looked back in a very quick 147.4. Deserves respect setting a new lifetime mark from the 9-hole. But will be bet and the 3 & 7 could make it difficult to repeat.
7-Stonebridge Helios (7/5)-Similar to the one above, set a 147 mark leaving from the 9-hole and should be right there at the line again.

Race 9 (9:40 EST PM)

4-I Did It My Way (5/2)-Raced on smaller ovals until shipping in for the last start here. Raced well but disappointed as an odds-on choice and has a chance to make amends at a better price.
7-Dreamfair Arnie B (2-1)-Pelling pupil comes off a big effort in its M1 debut but wasn't able to catch a well-meant winner, Stonebridge Helios. Could be better tonight and it appears that only #4 may stand in the way of a picture.

Race of the Week: $1.5M Saudi Derby | Saturday, Feb. 25

The Lead:
The world's eyes will be on the $20 million Saudi Cup on Saturday from the Middle East, but the undercard provides several competitive wagering opportunities as well. One of those stands out in Race 6, the $1.5 million Saudi Derby, where the international pool figures to be heavy on the Japanese and American contingents.

Through the first 7 weeks of 2023, our Xpressbet Race of the Week betting strategies have netted $2,768 in returns for $700 invested -- including 4 winners returning $1242, $430, $520 and another $576 a week ago. Plying our trade in international races like this isn't the norm, but we'll see if a hot hand extends to the desert.

Field Depth:
Graded stakes winners HAVNAMELTDOWN from California and CONTINUAR from Japan will garner the headlines and support on the international parimutuel tote. These kind of races always are difficult to judge on class, though ES UNICO's last company line in Dubai stacks up nicely as well.

Pace:
FROM DUSK and HAVNAMELTDOWN ought to insure a blistering pace over a mile. Several others of these sprint-bred types could push the issue and a finisher has a major chance in this set-up.

Our Eyes:
Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

1-Es Unico: Clear runner-up in the UAE 2000 Guineas trial over 7 furlongs on dirt at Meydan, this southern hemisphere 4-year-old transferred his form nicely from Uruguay. Finished up with sharp interest behind highly regarded Tiger Nation in Dubai, a race capable of winning this. Es Unico is by sire War Secretary, who owns a purely American pedigree by War Front out of outstanding turf/synthetic mare Upperline.

2-Loreley: No match for Es Unico in Meydan’s UAE 2000 Guineas trial a month ago, but post-race scope detected mucus that may have impacted performance. Clasico Argentina winner prior in front-running fashion may be part of the pace. Southern Hemisphere 4-year-old is by fleet US sire Kentuckian and out of a mare by Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus.

3-Almulhem: Late May 20 foal gives away development to Northern Hemisphere types and obviously those from Southern Hemisphere. Runaway maiden mile winner over this track on December 24, besting 18 runners by 3+ lengths. Has a sprint/mile US pedigree, pure Todd Pletcher, by More Than Ready and out of the mare Morrow Cove (by sprinter Yes It’s True).

4-Almurtajiz: No match runner-up to Saudi Derby rival Commissioner King in the Ministry of National Guard Cup over this track Dec. 16 going the same mile trip. Showed promise in November romp over 7 furlongs locally. Win-early pedigree by Good Magic out of American mare Vieja Luna; should handle distance.

5-Atta Alghali: Son of Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Karakontie would appear turf-bred on top, but dam was solid dirt performer in Chicago. Third-place finisher over this track Jan. 27 in the Saudi Derby qualifier. He had to almost stop cold on the far turn and re-rallied nicely before losing steam late. Could be a late factor with a cleaner trip.

6-Baalb: Deeper foundation than most of the local Saudi sophomores, running 6 times back to early September and winning 2 of 3 over the track in Riyadh. Maternal grandson of star US sprinter Classy Mirage is by Irish sprint/mile sharpie Beldardo. Comes off a disappointing race, but intrigues some.

7-Commissioner King: Kentucky-bred son of Pimlico Special winner and Belmont Stakes runner-up Commissioner, he exits a 4-length win Dec. 16 in the local Ministry of National Guard Cup. Dam was a solid stakes sprinter in Maryland. Winner of 2 of 3 lifetime ranks among the top local hopes.

8-Continuar: Cattleya Stakes winner in Japan’s Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifiers in November, he’s a son of top US sprinter Drefong. Note last year’s Saudi Derby runner-up also was a son of Drefong via Japan. Connections seek path from Saudi Arabia to Dubai to Louisville if all goes to plan. Twice has run 1-1/8 miles, so distance will not be an issue at a mile for this colt from the female family of legendary Japanese mare Almond Eye. Was a bit one-paced last out in the Cattleya victory.

9-Derma Sotogake: Hard-fought dirt winner in Japan’s Zen Nippon Nisai Yushun last time out, he’ll be one of that nation’s multiple major reps in the Saudi Derby. Japan has won this race 2 of its 3 years in existence and finished 2-3 in last year’s event. Derma Sotogake defeated Saudi Derby rival Continuar in a matchup last year, and this is a son of Mind Your Biscuits, the US-based sprinter who had much success in Dubai. He carries the Sunday Silence bloodlines on the damside for class and stamina.

10-Ecoro Ares: Outsider among the Japanese contingent, ninth beaten 14 lengths most recently in a turf sprint. Son of US sprinter Unified, who did stretch out to win the 9F Peter Pan around 1 turn. Dam won 3 routes in US on dirt and turf.

11-From Dusk: $900,000 Ocala 2-Year-Old purchase by hot young sire Bolt d’Oro (and out of a half-sister to $1.6M turfer Get Stormy) has been wildly inconsistent in Japan to date. He’s performed better shorter in distance and has exceptional early foot – owing to his 9-4/5 drill at OBS. From Dusk should be part of the pace.

12-Havnameltdown: Trainer Bob Baffert won this race last year wire-to-wire with Pinehurst, who ran in many of the same races as this colt – specifically, the Del Mar Futurity at 2 and San Vicente at 3. His only career loss in 5 starts came when barnmate Cave Rock wired the Del Mar Futurity. Havnameltdown was gifted the lead in the San Vicente and cruised up top; that scenario will be more difficult to attain in the Saudi Derby. Not only did his American barnmate win this race last year, but also note Cowan represented the US well in 2021 when runner-up.

13-My Map: Saudi Arabia’s leading contender is perfect in 4 starts and notched the local prep victory in the Saudi Derby qualifier. By Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Liam’s Map, he sat patiently inside last out, split horses professionally and had a nice turn of foot to open up before idling a bit to the wire. With a hot pace expected, he’s a danger late as the locals look for their first win in this race.

Most Certain Exotics Contender:
ES UNICO really caught my eye in Dubai and the race shape looks favorable for his style. The Southern Hemisphere 4YOs always perk my attention in these spring international races with their developmental edge.

Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
ATTA ALGHALI can improve off a troubled trip and gets a good set-up.

Canterbury Park - Race #1

#6 Kal El	Think he should land a perfect trip from this draw, and I'm hoping he's just playable as the likely second choice in here. Third off the bench for his best?
#2 Undertow	Get the feeling one of these two will decide this one, and this guy might be just a touch more tactical than the top choice. He's also likely to be overbet but probably has some upside in the second career turf start.
#5 Mr. Insensitive	He steps up off a decent comeback run on the turf, but I'm hoping he ends up just being a little pace bother for the likely chalk while the top choice settles in just behind them.
Race Summary	Kal El is quick enough to avoid having to finish from too far out of it, and he might find himself in a perfect spot spying a couple slightly quicker players early on.

Canterbury Park - Race #6

#4 Red Cents	Think he might be set for better after a modest debut and a fading turf run in his 2-year-old season, and he has some upside while getting back here and adding Lasix.
#5 Lo Lo's Laughter	Forward player was always in touch in the debut run before settling for second, but he would probably hit pretty hard here if he were able to move forward in this second career start.
#2 Harleezy	He's debuting in a spot that doesn't feel like the deepest one we're going to see here all season, and it wouldn't be a shock to see him land a share at first asking. Get a good look at him.
Race Summary	Red Cents hasn't stayed late in either of his first two starts, but I think he might be ready for something better while returning as a sophomore at what I hope is a fair enough price.

Canterbury Park - Race #7

#10 Bob's All In	Pretty decent mid-range price lean here for me, as his sort of plodding finishing style might play well enough in a spot with several players who do their best work on the front end. Could see the pace coming back in a way that helps him home.
#8 War Chest	Think he is another who would benefit if the pace hooked up and started to come back, as he has a handful of decent finishing lines on his page, and he's a mid-range price player with this group if he can get back to some of those races he produced here last year.
#5 Overly Lucky	Not a whole lot wrong with that comeback off the long layoff here earlier this month, and while I'm not sure if he has a whole lot of upside here as a 7-year-old, he can be in the mix if he holds the form from that last one.
Race Summary	Bob's All In gets the edge at what I hope is a decent price off some modest running lines, but he's a one-paced grinder who might plug his way into a big piece of this if the pace shows.

#4 MACASSA (4-1)	Right set-up, right price to upstage recent in-the-money finishes at this level.
#1 LAVEAU (2-1)	Piling up the checks – and burning serious money while doing it.
#6 ACQUIRED TASTE (7-2)	Dueled and tired on cutback from turf route, takes another class drop.
Race Summary	MACASSA chased the 3-to-2 winner in the 3-path and held second at this distance. She should sit a perfect stalking trip and can win at a boxcar price with slight improvement. Bet to win and place.

Gulfstream Park - Race #7

#1 DREAMS FLOAT (9-5)	Turning heads in the morning; dam was a stakes-winning router.
#4 TO THYSELF B TRUE (6-1)	Faced boys in her debut, raced evenly in fast-paced follow-up.
#3 STARSHIP AGENDA (5-2)	Bumped, rallied for minor awards twice behind short-priced winners.
Race Summary	DREAMS FLOAT has been working up a storm for her debut for Joseph. If she carries over her morning speed, she should go a long way in this field. Her dam was a second-out winner, 3-for-8 overall and a stakes winner sprinting and going long. Bet to win and place.

Gulfstream Park - Race #8

#7 SUPER CHOW (9-5)	Multiple stakes winner led long way in Grade III try at this distance.
#6 LIGHTNING TONES (15-1)	Improved as gelding, big step up in class, can rally onto exotic tickets.
#5 MR. PEEKS (5-1)	Widened under a drive in maiden win with first-time Lasix.
Race Summary	SUPER CHOW won his last four non-graded stakes races by combined 13-3/4 lengths, three as the odds-on favorite and three in wire-to-wire fashion. He draws a favorable post in a speed-laden field and returns with another month off between starts. Play a 7/5,6/ALL trifecta.

6^th race [Wild Applause, 1 mi TURF] – (3) Liguria won the Jimmy Durante (G3) at Del Mar in December for Chad Brown after a maiden breaker at Aqueduct. She made her 2023 debut at Churchill Downs in the Edgewood (G2) and finished fifth on a turf course that was not to her liking but was beaten by less than two lengths. (8) Breath Away became a stakes winner at Gulfstream Park in the Sanibel Island in her third start of the year for Christophe Clemente. She backed up a race high speed figure from that victory in her next start when she finished second in the Hilltop at Pimlico during Preakness weekend. (6) Soviet Excess won her last two starts at Gulfstream for Todd Pletcher. (2) Tax Implications beat the top choice who is her stablemate in their career debuts by almost seven lengths as the favorite. She then ran second in the Chelsea Flowers in October at Aqueduct and has been off since then.
7^th race [Clm 16000, 1 1/16 mi] – (1) Cool Quartet won 2 of his last three 3 races for a $12,500 claiming price. (3) Blake B. will make a significant drop in class having run last for a $25,000 tag and won a starter allowance back in November at Aqueduct. His current form does not look good on paper, maybe the class relief is what he needs. (6) Higher Quality won his last two starts at Belmont Park and was claimed from both of them for $14,000 and then $10,000 most recently. (2) Truculent was claimed from 4 out of his last 5 starts for prices ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 with one victory in the sequence.
8^th race [Alw 95000 N1X, 1 1/4 mi TURF] – (7) Pioneering Spirit won his last two starts for Linda Rice moving from a maiden claimer to a starter allowance at Belmont. Speed figures increased and Jose Ortiz stayed on board. (6) Royal Spirit is also from the Rice barn and he has four excellent finishes in starter allowances. (1) So High was last seen in the Manhattan (G1) two weeks ago and drops back to the allowance ranks where he can use his early speed. (4) Fighter in the Win won twice in France going the ten furlong distance and has also shown a preference to go to the lead early in the race.
9^th race [OC80k/C, 1 mi] – (2) Gerrymander will exit a series of graded stakes races and gets Lasix for the first time for Chad Brown. (1) Venti Valentine ran her last four times in NY-bred stakes with a win two races back at Aqueduct. She is a past stakes winner against open company. (6) Movie Moxy won a second-level allowance convincingly back in May for Linda Rice at the Belmont. (5) Tap the Faith made her 2023 debut in a stakes race at Delaware Park having won an allowance in December at the Big A.

1st race – (3) Medaglia Forever missed by a neck last time and should make amends here. (1) Forever After All was second in six of seven starts and should complete another exacta. (5) Methodology should benefit from her debut and be a main factor. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-5.
4th race – (7) Sahlabiya can control the pace and lead throughout. (6) Callie’s Grit was second the last two times and should be the main threat. (8) Retrospect could be a factor in her debut. (1) No Guilt should benefit from a rail trip. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-6-7-8. Doubles: 1-6-7-8 with 2-3-6.
5th race – (3) Luna Moth (C) dropped from 3-1 to 2-1 and drew clear for a nice win. (2) Pigalle looks like the one to fear. (6) Gray Frost will be hard to catch in a small field. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-6. Doubles: 4-5-7-8 with 3-5-8-9.
7th race – (4) Grand Love exits stakes company and will enjoy the class relief here. (3) Mo Town Mayhem rallied strongly to break his maiden and figures to be the main competition. (1) In Color ships in from California and cannot be ignored. (9) Willow Bend could perk up in a claimer. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-9.
9^th race – (2) Matareya beat a classy field last time and should handle this field. (1) Hidden Connection shapes up as the main rival here. (5) Society will benefit from a turnback to a sprint. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-5.

Main Contenders:
Soviet Excess (6) rides a two race winning streak and even though she’s the only horse in the field trained by Todd Pletcher opens at 6 to 1, so we absolutely have to look at her first when deciding who might be the best win bet. The filly finished second in two straight, before the wins, and all four races were routes, two on the grass. She fits on all counts in this non-graded stakes for three year old fillies and has every right to post the mild upset, at higher odds than she should be or has been in her last two wins where she was the 3 to 2 favorite in both.
Liguria (3) is one of two saddled by Chad Brown, the other being Tax Implications, who has much less chance to win as she hasn’t run since October whereas all the other seven in the main body of the race have run this year. Liguria finished second to that stablemate in her debut last September then won two in a row including the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante Stakes in California, before taking the winter off. She returned in the tougher Grade 3 Edgewood Stakes on Derby weekend last month and wasn’t disgraced as she was beaten a neck and three heads for second in a five horse blanket finish for the runner-up spot. Logically improving in her second start back off the layoff and with Irad Ortiz, Jr. aboard, Liguria would be no surprise if victorious in this situation.
Breath Away (8) opens as the 2 to 1 favorite so is likely a poor win bet as compared to Soviet Excess for sure and possible as compared to Liguria (who opens at 3 to 1). Breath Away won around two turns on turf in her career debut, then two later won the two-turn Sanibel Island Stakes in Florida, this past April. On Preakness weekend she was sent to post as the 9 to 5 favorite in the Hilltop Stakes, made a big move from eighth on the turn to lead in the stretch, then was passed and beaten a half-length at the end while two lengths clear over the third horse. That was a career best effort with a 98 Equibase Speed Figure not as good as the 101 Liguria earned in the Edgewood and slightly better than the 95 figure Soviet Excess Earned on April 30. Rosario rides back and as she’s never been worse than second in four starts, Breath Away certainly must be considered as a win contender on any pick 3, pick 4 or double tickets we play involving this race at the least, as well as for exactas.

Win Bets: Soviet Excess (6) can be bet to win at odds of 5 to 2 or more. I might consider a win bet on Liguria (3) as well, as long as she’s higher than 2 to 1.
