The Americans

US-based juveniles are in the hunt in the day’s first race, the listed Norfolk Stakes at five furlongs. American Rascal, the first foal out of superstar mare Lady Aurelia, looks to build off a smashing debut at Keeneland. The Wesley Ward trainee romped by 10-1/4 lengths in his dirt unveiling. Gulfstream Park’s automatic bid winner No Nay Mets also goes postward for trainer George Weaver. Weaver won Tuesday’s Queen Mary with a similar GP qualifier, Crimson Advocate. And later, the Ascot Gold Cup in Race 4 doesn’t have an American-based runner, but US punters are quite familiar with 2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf 1-2 finishers Yibir and Broome.

The Main Event

Race 4 is the Group 1 $340,260 Ascot Gold Cup for the marathon stayers. The two and one-half mile test lands exactly at the midpoint of the five-day Royal Ascot meeting. The 2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf top 2 re-match here with Yibir and Broome, adding another chapter to the Godolphin-Coolmore rivalry. Neither is among the favorites with the British bookmakers. Coltrane came off a 200-day layoff to easily win the local Gold Cup trial prep and is the likely public choice. Trainer John Gosden had the 3-time Gold Cup winner Stradivarius dominate this race from 2018-2020 and looks to pass the baton to Courage Mon Ami, an unbeaten son of Frankel taking a major class and distance rise.

Hawthorne - Race #5

#3 I'm Box Office	She turned in just a couple even efforts in Indiana last season, but she's back off the bench for this local debut with what I think is still some upside to run to. Just a touch overlooked today?
#2 Dream Fly	She's an honest enough finisher, but she has already had a handful of chances and came up short a couple times at Belterra last year. Obvious player, but she's probably overbet running out of this barn.
#5 Patience Worth	She has been landing some non-threatening underneath shares on the main track and now tries turf, but I do have a mild worry that one of the cheaper ones in here is going to keep her honest early if she wants to show pace again.
Race Summary	I'm Box Office might be better than what we have seen so far, and I'm hoping the presence of the Ward and Harty runners in here will keep the price just playable enough. Wouldn't be surprised to see something solid today.

Hawthorne - Race #7

#4 Kathaan	Think she's going to hit hard in here, as her best stuff is already competitive, and she seems likely to get a fair enough pace with the presence of a few pace players in the gate with her.
#3 My Lips Are Sealed	She's another who might get a decent setup from a bit off the speed, and I think she makes for a dangerous one-two punch for Chris Block today.
Race Summary	Had a little interest in #2 Plus Chic while trying this route trip, but I worry her previous sprint form leaves her a bit too close to the splits early. Think she might end up liking two turns in the end. That said, Kathaan should benefit if all the potential speed stays lined up, as she has some competitive efforts with solid company lines.

Hawthorne - Race #8

#1 Play Twenty	Think you can give her a pass on that last one in hopes she'll be back to her best on the main track, and she looks like she should be able to control the tempo in a race without a ton of serious early burn.
#4 Lucy's Lookin Left	Her local form has been super consistent, and I'm not going to hold the try against pricier at Keeneland last out against her. Obvious player if you think she's getting back to her baseline effort.
#7 Shez Reckless	She is another who has some upside on the move back to the main track, and she at least has some semblance of a rating gear that might serve her well from the high draw.
Race Summary	Play Twenty was denied the lead and couldn't hang when trying this level off the claim last out, but I think the surface switch today gives her some bounce-back potential while drawing perfectly inside for a guaranteed send mission.

Race Summary	MADE BIRDIE arrives off a series of slow workouts at Monmouth but can’t be discounted in this barn. Her dam was 34/4-7-5 with a $110k bankroll. Bet to win and place.

Delaware Park - Race #6

#3 TAPPIN JOSIE (4-1)	Ultra-consistent sprinter and $250k earner takes on the boys for first time.
#2 RUN POPPY (8-1)	Impressed with blinks in 4-horse field but last three foes to beat him are 12/1-0-0 since.
#7 BOUND BY DESTINY (2-1)	Filly is working bullets, gets Lasix for 3yo return, 4-for-4 at Delaware.
Race Summary	TAPPIN JOSIE, first or second in 10 of 13 starts, won her last five non-stakes sprints at various venues and held her own in stakes company recently. She made a late run but couldn’t reach Late Frost (3-4, $155k) in her last race. She takes on the boys today but is worth a win and place bet nonetheless.

Delaware Park - Race #8

#5 FIRST TO LAST (6-5)	Takes magnified class drop in this field, one mile distance should suit.
#2 DEPUTY DONNIE (4-1)	Far back in MSW debut, barn 15-percent with maiden claimers.
#6 SOCIAL JOE (15-1)	Can rally into gimmick wagers if he averts another troubled break.
Race Summary	FIRST TO LAST passed the loose leader but got caught two starts back, then dueled to mid-turn before the odds-on favorite and others passed by in a longer route race than today in his last start. He will have no excuses on the class drop in this field. Play a 5/2,6/ALL trifecta.

2nd race – (3) Fifth Avenue (B) had some trouble in his debut at Churchill Downs and still finished fourth. Looks best here. (8) Lambo seems ready for a big effort in his debut. (2) Golden Symphony is another firster with promising works. (5) Hey Joe Joe should be a factor here. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-5-8. Doubles: 2-3-5-8 with 3-5-6. Pick 3: 2-3-5-8 with 3-5-6 with 1-5-6-8.
3rd race – (5) Everso Mischievous was an impressive maiden winner and can handle winners here. (6) Communication Memo flopped in a stakes but can bounce back here. 2nd race [OC 62k/N2X, 1 mi TURF] – (5) Easter ran his two best American speed figures this year in an allowance win at Aqueduct and then a Grade 3 at Pimlico on Preakness weekend where the third-place finisher won at Monmouth Park recently. (3) Duke of Hazzard makes a drop in class after his debut for 2023 when he broke slowly and rallied very wide to get third in a top allowance condition at Keeneland. (4) Chasing the Crown was an allowance winner at Churchill Downs in April. (6) Sky and Sand gets blinkers on and is projected to be on the lead.

3rd race [Clm 12500, 1 mi] – (6) Greatest Love was claimed from her last two starts and now Linda Rice drops her down a notch off a short layoff and can get loose on the lead. (4) Vallarand ran for a $20,000 tag three weeks ago. (5) Raffinity has been in good form recently and makes a bit of a drop down. (2) Carly Hustle was a winner three starts ago with a speed figure that beats this field.

6th race [OC 80k/N3X, 6F] – (4) Nova Rags has six top three finishes including a win last time in a N2X allowance and might get a contentious pace to set up his closing move. (5) Colonel Bowman has now won four races in a row and 6 out of his last 7 starts with two N2X wins in there. (3) Mr Phil tried the Runhappy (G3) after winning his first start of the year on the front end in this condition, so they opt for the $80,000 claiming option now. (2) Secret Rules has 2 wins from his last 3 starts and may be one of the pacesetters.

8th race [OC 62k/N1X, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (8) Big Brass Bed was a maiden winner for Chad Brown last time at Monmouth beating a horse that came back to win her next start. (6) Quarrel was fourth in the Soaring Softly (G3) in her first start of the year after a maiden breaker in November. (5) Livelovenlaughter gets blinkers on and may get to the lead in her second start of the year. (4) Root Cause was a maiden winner at Gulfstream Park in March for Brown also and then tried winners at Churchill last time.

KAREN'S WAY - Last time around the track was at Delaware Park in a race with a class figure of 82. Dropping drastically in Equibase class figure this time puts her in a solid position in this race. Trainer, Stites, has been deliberate with this mare off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. RUN LAURA RUN - All systems look good for this mare. Last work, 2nd fastest of the day, shows she's fit and ready. This mare won at this distance on February 1st and was at a higher class than today. I usually like playing sprinters who are 3-4 races into a come back. IMAGISM - Don't often see a favorable ROI like +112. This jock/trainer duo has done well together over the last twelve months. Have to like the way Graci has raced this filly back into shape off the layoff. Horse is well spotted in this sprint and I think she'll run well today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 QUEEN ROSEMARY (ML=2/1), #5 TILTED TIARA (ML=4/1), #2 PEACEARELLA (ML=8/1),

QUEEN ROSEMARY - Can't bet on this racer in today's sprint of 6 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a sprint event recently. Would have to get better off that sixth place finish last out to make an impact here. The speed ratings are going downward. I'm not throwing a few bucks at this mount off of that trend. TILTED TIARA - In this type of situation, this steed's inability to make up ground in the last race is a troubling signal. PEACEARELLA - Tough to wager on this steed this time out. Make her show you something in a short distance contest before you bet on her in a race of 6 furlongs. She had to show me more against that weaker field in the last race on December 14th to get my support today.

I've got to go with NIXA. Shows formidable Equibase speed figs on average overall when measured up against the rest of this group. Must be carefully examined in this event if only for the respectable speed rating put up in the last affair. Must be considered given the class of races run recently. SHARON'S GREY HOPE - Granitz has this filly racing well and is a very good selection based on the very strong Equibase Speed Figs earned in sprint races recently. This trainer has the most favorable return on investment in this field with entries racing at this distance and surface.

COYOTE ROAD looks quite good to best this field. Had one of the best Equibase Speed Figures of this group of horses in his last contest. Overall the Equibase speed figs of this horse look respectable in this contest. This gelding has posted some nice finishing positions in his last several efforts. HEZA HANDFUL - Could best this group of animals based on the Equibase Speed Fig - 91 - of his last outing. Must be used in the exotic offerings. FALCONS FURY - Earned a solid speed rating in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this affair. Has performed very well recently in route races, posting a nifty 80 avg speed figure.

MYSTIC CREED - I like when a thoroughbred has dropped in class at least five class points like this one did in the last race and then runs against a similar field right back. Bourgeois must've found the right class. Always watch out for the longer priced equine when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. Sophisticated selectors will tell you that this racer has strong pace. This equine didn't run well in the mud in her last race around the track at Evangeline Downs. You may want to overlook that effort. THISONEISFORYOU - Finished in the place spot, but easily 2nd over the third horse. Those types usually run well next time out. Taking a big class drop in class rating points from her April 28th race at Evangeline Downs. Based on that valuable data, I will give this one the edge. Delcid comes to saddle up after getting to know the filly in the last affair. A repeat of that last effort on April 28th where she garnered a speed figure of 77 looks high enough to score in this race.

EXPECT A DANCER - Will be tough for this horse to beat this field off of that last rating. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's Equibase class figure, so put her on the vulnerable contenders list. GOLD PLUS - Doesn't look to be in a strong situation in today's event. BANK ON IT - This filly hasn't had any strong finishes in short distance contests in the last 60 days. This pony ran a mediocre speed rating in the last race. She shouldn't run better and will probably lose in today's event running that number.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - MYSTIC CREED - It's so important to jump out to the lead in a race less than a mile on a bullring. This horse has the speed and the favorable post to do both. Could go to the lead and never look back.
