    #2
    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Hawthorne - Race #1
#1 Kitten Rocks Solid lean in the opener with this one, as she gets back around two turns, and the winner of her two-back race with some of these was back to win here the other day to continue a recent tear. Think she's capable of better than her last pair.
#2 Ghaaleb's Dreams She showed just a little bit of late interest on the turf when coming back off an 18-month break, and now she gets some decent class relief while making the second start off the bench. Obvious player, but not sure how much to expect there to be in her tank as she makes just her 10th career trip to post in six calendar years.
#4 Cairo Summer It has been some time since she won a race, but her form is among the most reliable overall in this group, and she makes a lot of sense to weave into the underneath spots in the gimmicks. Wouldn't put up much of an argument with anyone taking a shot on top here.
Race Summary Ghaaleb's Dreams has obviously had her issues with four very long layoff lines on her page through just nine lifetime starts. Obviously her running lines look competitive on the drop, but I'd be wary if the price got too short. Kitten Rocks should get a great trip right up near the top in a race without a ton of pace.
    Hawthorne - Race #6
#2 J Z's Fine Wine I like that she turned in a career-best try off the bench in that first start of her 3-year-old season, and she's tactical enough to find a good spot near the front while not meeting a ton of early burn on paper. Lands it second off the bench?
#4 Pacific View She has a big claim on this one after turning in a couple honest efforts with similar local company last month, and she's probably right there again if she's able to hold that form.
#3 Joyzella There isn't anything really compelling on form to think she'll jump up and win this, but she's a reliable enough sort to think she'll plug away again, and that leaves her in with a chance with her baseline try if everything falls just right for her.
Race Summary J Z's Fine Wine is probably going to take a little bit of cash after outrunning her 18/1 odds last out, but she may still offer an appealing enough mid-range price while having some logical upside today.
    Hawthorne - Race #7
#11 Noble Creeker He's a little interesting to me at what should be a playable price while getting back on the grass, as his only two turf starts came early in his career with special weight company, and he's worth a look on the grass with this kind of company.
#3 Lawmaker His form isn't quite as all over the place as it first seems in context of today's race, as his turf route tries have been pretty decent, and he has never been in this easy. Obvious player, but I'm not totally sold.
#5 Handsoffthegoods They obviously have some pretty modest hopes for this one despite a damside pedigree that has produced a lot of nice horses. Wouldn't surprise to see him be good enough to land this soft debut spot.
Race Summary There have been 13 similar races run here in the last few years, and they have been won by 13 different barns -- feels like everyone is kind of throwing things against the wall and just hoping for the best in limited races at the local level. Noble Creeker has a little price appeal while trying turf with claimers for the first time.

      #3
      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Penn National - Race #1
#1 TORRID (9-2) Improving quickly, went well in his last two 6F sprints off similar rest.
#3 COFFEE WITH ALEX (2-1) Beaten favorite at Parx, worked in :34-4/5 on move into top barn.
#5 Z’S SO GOOD (7-2) Should sit ideal trip in speed-laden field, last won with Rodriguez up.
Race Summary TORRID is a new horse since adding Lasix. He dueled to the quarter pole and held second two starts back, then romped to break his maiden. He might need to find a passing gear in a solid field at this level, but the 9-2 morning-line price is well worth a win and place wager.
      Penn National - Race #2
#5 RECYCLE (9-5) Plays catch-me-if-you-can at proven level and on proven surface.
#2 ON THE EDGE (10-1) Tries turf; dam ran 1-2 in 10 of 25 starts at Penn National, mostly in dirt routes.
#3 RECONVENE (5-2) Can’t seen to avoid trouble lines, can’t afford another one with lack of pace in here.
Race Summary RECYCLE, a lightly-raced 5-year-old, has two wins on turf, gets class relief and will take some catching in this spot. Don’t expect 9-5 but expect a victory in his second start in the last seven months. Bet to win and place.
      Penn National - Race #5
#2 SYLVIA I AM (8-1) Chased fleet-footed fave in grass route, live longshot in return to sprinting.
#4 GOLDEN TREASURE (2-1) Rode rail, steadied on turn, ‘closed fast’ to finish second.
#6 WARRIOR’S WAY OUT (8- Beattie-trained firster in well-drilled from the gate for his debut.
Race Summary SYLVIA I AM swung wide nearing the stretch but was out-kicked by a pair of 5-to-2 shots in a main-track route two back. He gave way chasing a fast pace on the turf last out and could fire on the cutback to a sprint. Bet to win and place and play a 2-4-6 exacta box.

            Parx Racing - Race #3 - Post: 1:34pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $23,000 Class Rating: 64

            Rating:

            #5 DIANE'S COMET (ML=5/1)
            #6 TONALA (ML=12/1)

DIANE'S COMET - After the affair aboard this horse on April 25th, the jockey is going to be in tune with the filly much better. This rider/trainer duo has been producing a very profitable ROI, right at +232. TONALA - Santaella-Calderon brings her right back. I recommend you stay with this strong mare. Mare put in a good late run at 7 furlongs and should relish the added distance today.

            Vulnerable Contenders: #1 UNADULTERATED (ML=6/5), #2 SPEIGHTSTER'S GOLD (ML=9/2), #4 CREME CARAMEL (ML=5/1),

UNADULTERATED - Hasn't been winning lately when made the morning-line favorite. Take a look at her record. Had to show me much more last time out. Never made much of an impact. I checked out her pps and she hasn't done well out of the one slot. Finished sixth in her most recent performance with a disappointing fig. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this bunch. SPEIGHTSTER'S GOLD - You always think this animal has a shot to win, but she just misses regularly. CREME CARAMEL - Don't feel this entrant will make an impact in today's event. That last speed figure was mediocre when compared with today's class rating.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #5 DIANE'S COMET is going to be the play if we are getting 7/5 or better
            EXACTA WAGERS: Box [5,6]

              # 5 O CIGANO 6/1
              # 2 REINSURE 4/1
CALL WEST figures to be the bet in here. Garnered a sound Equibase speed fig in the last race. Can run another good one in this affair. O CIGANO - Recent figures for the jockey - 15 win percent - make this gelding stand out in this group. With Diaz controlling the reins on him, this gelding should be able to break out early in this race. REINSURE - Has to be considered - I like the figs from the last race. I like the jockey on this gelding - very good chance to win the race.

QUARTER HORSE 330Y, FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WITH AN AVERAGE SPEED INDEX OF 90 AND UNDER.

MARYLAND MAGIC has a respectable shot to take this race. Must be given a chance here on the basis of the figures in the speed department alone. He has a very good distance/surface win record - 16 for 53. Has quite good Equibase Class Figures relative to this group - worth a look. CHICKSDIGMYMONEYBAGS - Will likely be one of the early speedsters of the group going into the halfway point of the contest. With a strong 81 average speed figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's affair. HAD TO BE RELENTLESS - Should keep the impressive string of finishes intact today. This racer has some longshot handicapping angles going for him.

                  Penn National - Race #2 - Post: 6:29pm - SO - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $19,000 Class Rating: 90

                  Rating:

                  #5 RECYCLE (ML=9/5)

RECYCLE - This gelding is in good physical condition, having run a good race on May 29th, finishing second. A repeat performance from any of last three races around the track, and this one should be in the winner's circle. The latest speed figure of 90 is the top last race speed figure in the bunch. This gelding has a lot of ability on the grass. Could be long gone by the time they turn for home and hit the stretch.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #3 RECONVENE (ML=5/2), #8 MOON WARRIOR (ML=6/1), #6 GALILEE (ML=6/1),

RECONVENE - Just can't invest in any steed right back after he doesn't hit the board after any extended rest time. Finished fourth in his most recent effort with a somewhat easily forgotten speed fig. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this bunch. MOON WARRIOR - Hasn't been close at all recently. This gelding earned a speed fig in his last event which likely isn't good enough in today's race. GALILEE - You always believe this animal has a shot to cross the finish line in first, but he falters most of the time. Unlikely that the speed rating he earned on Aug 24th will be enough in this race.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - RECYCLE - According to my information, has the speed to wire this group. With a competent ride by Hernandez, this one could win easily.
