Al Cimaglia: Running Aces Late Pick 4 Analysis

    June 6, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Running Aces has a 10-race program ready to go. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7. The sequence has a $3,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 7 (9:12 PM CDT)

4-Bombay Hanover (9/2)-Team Plano entry should offer a square price. Likes to stay inside and will look to brush by down the lane. Could land in a close-up seat and get sucked around.
6-Robbie Burns N (7/2)-Drops to a better level to compete after facing Open Handicap company. The 12-year-old should be engaged tonight and Cutting can have in play once the wings fold. Has enough back class to get the top and fight down the lane against this kind.

    Race 8 (9:34 PM CDT)

1-American Dreamer (5-1)-Took a week off and has shown the ability to win off that type of schedule. Came a close 3rd in his 2023 Aces debut. Warren should be right there at the top of the stack turning for the wire.
6-Saddle Up (3-1)-Came out of the pocket down the lane to be 1-length better than the one below. Looking for the same type of trip and the 5-year-old can stay good for another picture.
7-He'zzz A Wise Sky (4-1)-Warren sticks with #1 so Cutting gets the assignment and he has the gate speed to land in a close-up seat. Went off as a chalk versus this kind from the same post and best to respect here. Looking for the pilot to save some juice for the stretch drive.

    Race 9 (9:56 PM CDT)

3-Handsome Harvey (5-1)-Harvey has been a dominate winner in the last 2 starts, Actually the Plano pupil has been in sharp form for quite a while. Bumps up but shouldn't blush at the competition and will look for another big try.
8-Sneaky Hill (5-1)-Looking for a solid price and has shown gate speed in the last 2 starts from the inside. My take is Jenson will duck and then look to come off cover with a well-timed move. That plan could work as the fractions should be lively and this 4-year-old can close in a hurry.

    Race 10 (10:18 PM CDT)

3-Cenalta Firedragon (6-1)-Not sure why Plano was so anxious to pull out of 3rd before the 1st turn in last. Maybe it didn't matter the winner was well-meant and is not in this field. With that in mind will use looking for a big try and maybe a less taxing trip.
7-Setoncruisecontrol (10-1)-Tried wiring easier from post 7 and faded down the lane. Gets a positive driver change in Warren as the trainer was steering. Should get a good early seat, and the price play has shown early speed in the last 2 starts. Will look for a more manageable trip and to be in the hunt at the wire.

    0.50 Late Pick 4

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #4
#10 Dust Storm He's a swing here, but his one local try produced the best race of his life, and maybe he finds a decent spot tracking the pace. Price should be right to see if this is just his favorite footing in this second try off the bench.
#8 City of Clouds He draws well to prompt the splits from the outside, but he wasn't a really serious threat late last out at 2/5 on the tote, and it wouldn't be a shock to see him give away ground late again. Tough call.
#5 Italian Symphony She rallied well enough to get past City of Clouds when they met last time out, and this one has a little upside in the second career start. Wouldn't surprise.
Race Summary Dust Storm ran really well in his only local try, and maybe he's sitting on something better here after chasing and fading in the Horseshoe Indianapolis comeback try. #9 Diamondhard Stone is worth a look while returning off the layoff, too, as the winner of his debut here last year won a stakes race here yesterday and tried a couple stops along the Derby Trail -- this one might make some noise.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#4 Spirited Sol He has done all of his work going shorter, but he should find himself right up on the pace while stretching out, and there's some upside here in the second try of the season. Wouldn't be a surprise to see him take up the running in a race where the rest are happy to press and settle a bit if needed.
#1 Nice Ace He has enough speed to be in the conversation into the first turn with the top choice, and he landed a couple stakes races here last season, so you know the footing isn't going to be an issue while returning off the Woodbine dud.
#2 I Wanna Win He's a good fit on overall form, but I wonder if he's probably a little better on dirt at Thistledown than he is here. Still, he's really reliable and has shown a lot of grit late in his races.
Race Summary Spirited Sol tries two turns here, but I think he might be fast enough to find the front or a share of the lead with the rail runner, and I'm hoping he'll be just a little overlooked with the two drawn nearest to the fence likely to take some action.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
#1 Alation There are three or four of them drawn out wide who are likely to flash a little pace or chasing speed, and that may leave this one in a really cozy place just behind the pace on the inside when the early dust settles. Think there is a lot to like here, especially at what might be a mid-range price.
#7 Dontlookbackatall She's probably supposed to be tough here with some classier running lines on her page, and she has enough pace to stay in the frame early even while cutting back today.
#8 Rusty My Brother She stepped forward really nicely when getting her feet over the local footing in that second career start, and she might still have some upside with just the two tries under her belt. Dangerous if she moves up at all with Lasix.
Race Summary Alation should put herself into a good spot with her positional pace early on, and I'm hoping she ends up tracking a few players who are slightly quicker early while waiting for a seam.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Fort Erie - Race #2
#2 CLOSING BRIEF’S (4-1) Has ingredients to win debut; sire’s offspring produce 21-percent profit in debut.
#5 MIMI’S HOLIDAY (5-2) Sat golden trip when DQ’d from win in first race of Fort Erie meet.
#4 ONLY AT MIDNITE (9-2) Launched career at Woodbine, takes the plunge for 3yo debut.
Race Summary CLOSING BRIEF’S hails from a high-percentage barn with maiden claimers and she’s by a 15-percent first-out sire and out of a dam who 6-27 with an $85k bankroll. Give her the nod with a win and place bet as the co-light weight in the field.
        Fort Erie - Race #4
#3 AUTUMN’S SO FLASHY (3 Improving, should adapt to turf, must stay in closer contact early.
#5 CORE (9-5) Outdueled 5-2 second fave, led in 4-path in mid-stretch, just missed at this distance.
#2 VERY DEBONAIRE (6-1) Solid gate work in final prep for debut, sire produces 14-percent turf winners.
Race Summary AUTUMN’S SO FLASHY ran her best race at Fort Erie last out, rallying from far back to finish third in a Maiden Special Weight sprint. She has the bloodlines to transition to turf, as her dam was a minor stakes winner and Grade III-placed on the lawn. Bet to win and place.
        Fort Erie - Race #5
#3 GLITTER BAY (3-1) Consistent, versatile sort, exits fast race, piled up the checks prior at Tampa.
#6 MISS BRENTWOOD (2-1) Two wins, two near misses in last five starts, can use her speed well.
#1 LETS RUN TWO (4-1) Surged in mid-track to catch the favorite, steps up off the claim.
Race Summary GLITTER BAY adapted well to off-the-pace tactics in Florida with five consecutive in-the-money finishes, then earned her top speed figure on the jump into allowance company. She picks up weight on the jockey change for a barn that is 3-for-12 on the turf-to-dirt angle in the last month. Bet to win and place and play a 1-3-6 exacta box.

              Presque Isle Downs - Race #7 - Post: 5:42pm - SO - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $22,000 Class Rating: 97

              Rating:

              #2 STRIKE THE TOP (ML=8/1)
              #4 HEIRLOOM KITTEN (ML=7/2)
              #6 UNFLAPPABLE MAX (ML=8/1)

STRIKE THE TOP - Rogers must have known this gelding would run well at this track. Won his last race here on May 23rd and now goes for a double. I like to wager on this handicapping theory, a thoroughbred coming back off a sharp effort within the last thirty days. HEIRLOOM KITTEN - Good winning percentage this jockey and trainer pair have been putting together. The 91 most recent race speed figure looks strong in the TrackMaster PPs. UNFLAPPABLE MAX - After a pair of sprints, he's routing today, which is probably what this gelding wants to do. Recent Equibase speed figs show dominant pattern of improvement.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #7 KENTUCKY COOL (ML=3/1), #1 ALABAMA SLAMMER (ML=9/2), #3 GRADED ON A CURVE (ML=6/1),

KENTUCKY COOL - Unlikely that the speed rating he garnered on March 31st will hold up in this affair. ALABAMA SLAMMER - Tough to play any racer like this that didn't hit the board after the extended vacation and comes right back. GRADED ON A CURVE - Don't think this racer will make an impact in today's race. That last speed figure was somewhat easily forgotten when compared with today's class figure.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #2 STRIKE THE TOP on the nose if you can get odds of 3/1 or more

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 2 KINGOFTHERAINBOW 5/1
                # 5 LOADEMUPJUSTICE 5/2
                # 4 UNBRIDLED VICTOR 3/1
I've got to go with KINGOFTHERAINBOW. This bunch is much softer than the last one he faced. He has competitive class ratings, averaging 82, and has to be considered for this event. With a solid rider who has won at a competitive 17 percent clip over the last 30 days. This has to be one of the top choices. LOADEMUPJUSTICE - Meeting a much softer field than last time out. Overall the speed figs of this horse look competitive in this contest. UNBRIDLED VICTOR - Has to be considered here on the basis of the figures in the speed realm alone. Has to be given a chance - I like the figures from the last race.

                  Parx Racing - Race #7 - Post: 3:22pm - Claiming - 7.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $28,000 Class Rating: 83

                  Rating:

                  #15 BATTLE OF YORKTOWN (ML=8/1)
                  #6 MINXZHIPPSDONTLEYE (ML=6/1)

BATTLE OF YORKTOWN - The rider/trainer duo of Sanchez and Taylor has a strong return on investment together. I really like sprinters that make a fast turnaround. MINXZHIPPSDONTLEYE - This front-runner is running a shorter distance today. Should promote his chances. Past Performances show this pony with 3 improving speed ratings. Pennington should be on a horse ready to go right here. The 85 recent race speed fig looks good on paper.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #5 GLIDING AFLEET (ML=7/2), #10 TAP THE CANDY (ML=4/1), #9 SAL N LOUIE (ML=9/2),

GLIDING AFLEET - The Brain cautions me to stay away from ponies in sprint affairs that haven't hit the board in short distance races recently. A bit of a less than stellar try when this colt finished fifth. The pace configuration just isn't too promising for this speedy one. Many other ponies would have to scratch to upgrade his hopes. Should be difficult for this horse to beat this field off of that last speed fig. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class rating, so put him on the questionable challengers list. TAP THE CANDY - It looks like too much early speed is signed up in this race. This early speedball will almost certainly get roasted on the front end. This racer hasn't shown very much in the last couple of events. SAL N LOUIE - Can't bet on this entrant in today's sprint of 7 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a sprint race recently.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #15 BATTLE OF YORKTOWN to win. Have to have odds of at least 9/5 or better though

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 3 CHAMPION BY DESIGN 5/1
                    # 4 YOUR AWESOME BOSS 5/2
                    # 7 SMOOTH TALES 8/1
CHAMPION BY DESIGN has a strong shot to take this race. Is a contender - given the 68 speed rating from his most recent race. Has to be considered here on the basis of the figures in the speed department alone. This animal has a fantastic winning percentage in dirt sprints. YOUR AWESOME BOSS - He has been running solidly and the Speed Figures are among the most favorable in this group. Must be carefully examined given the class of races run lately. SMOOTH TALES - A nice ROI of +48 with this rider and handler combo. Dediego ought to be able to get this gelding to break out sharply in here.
