Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    May 30, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Northfield Park has a 0.50 Pick 5 carryover of $20,367.99 and there is an estimated pool of $125,000 for the sequence that begins in Race 6. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 has a guaranteed pool of $10,000 with a 14% takeout, it starts in Race 11, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11

5-Thornbush Hanover (8/5)-The Schillaci trainee does like to win and should be a main player on the drop in class. Merriman could race near the top of the stack, or on the point and look to play catch me if you can.
7-Tremendous Play (9/2)-This veteran is the other entry from the Schillaci barn and could provide a nice price. Has been facing much better and this is the level for a picture. Needs a sharp steer but the usual pilot Greg Grismore knows well. Does have good gate speed and could land in a close-up seat.

    Race 12

2-Elver Hanover (6/5)-This Burke trainee is 0-8 this year and now drops to a level where excuses aren't allowed. Last year, won 8 times and banked over $96,000. This year doesn't like to pass foes and can't finish off miles when on the point. It's wake up time.
3-Bambino Joe (7/2)-Joe doesn't like to win and recent form has been dull. But versus this kind could land in the 2-hole and trip out. Might be overlooked at the windows, the one above could get pounded.
7-Aim For Glory (25-1)-Hasn't won since 4-4 and has been dropping looking for a picture. This is the same level as its last win and should be a juicy price. Will use and hope Stahl decides to leave because he could land in a decent seat and maybe will hunt down the 2 above.

    Race 13

6-Captain Butler (9/5)-Took a picture at this class in last with a strong 56.2 back half and deserves respect here. Wrenn could be aggressive with the big chalk and will likely look for the lead off the gate. That plan could work but not sure racing on the point is the Butler's strong suit.
9-Remembering Shorty (4-1)-If Merriman can get off the gate and be able to get rolling before the half with some live cover the 6-year-old will be in the hunt. My take is Wrenn will be bet hard, he will look to land on the point and Shorty could be stalking.

    Race 14

2-Club Scene (8/5)-Comes back at the same condition looking for its 3rd straight win. Should have his way with these again and will probably be an odds-on choice. Many will single and it is understandable, but this 3-year-old will only be making its 6th lifetime start.
7-Dontfeardonttell (9-1)-This price shot has hit the board in 2 or 3 here with 1 picture and could make some noise but Stahl will need to leave. If driven aggressively, and #2 doesn't have his fastball, this 3-year-old can pass foes down the lane to surprise.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    5,7/2,3,7/6,9/2,7
    Total Bet=$24

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #4
#2 Magic Life Winner of her debut last summer went on to place in a listed stakes spot at Woodbine, and it wouldn't be any surprise to see her land this one fresh off the bench while making her sophomore debut.
#1 Zip Code Envy Top pair seem a cut above the rest in here, but this one might take just a touch more cash? The local form is pretty reliable, but I think the top choice's upside gives her the edge.
#6 Uppity Up She's a fresh face in a spot that doesn't seem to have a lot of heft outside the top two, but she gives me the feel of a horse I might be a bit more interested in next time around -- maybe at a mile?
Race Summary Magic Life and Zip Code Envy make for what feels like a top-heavy race, but the former may offer a slightly better number with some upside off the bench today. She was well meant in the debut last year and may be ready to go.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#6 Reinvest Think he might be in line for a pretty dreamy trip in behind the committed pace types, and he can probably find a more tactical spot than he did when outrun the whole way in Grade III company at Keeneland last out. Not sure he's 10/1 here, but he's a solid lean for me on race shape.
#1 Declared He's another who gets a decent enough race flow today with a couple potential forward players to set things up for something from a bit off the splits, and he has some upside with that last race under his belt when unable to reel in a pace player.
#9 Brazillionaire He had been pretty reliable until that dull Gulfstream run to end his 5-year-old campaign, but it's probably worth giving him a pass on that based on how out of form that was for him to stop like that coupled with the fact that he hasn't been seen since. Fresh press and pounce trip? Interesting enough.
Race Summary Reinvest and Brazillionaire have the most appeal in here for me, with Declared being a logical player in this second start off the layoff. Interested to see how the prices on these three shake out...
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#2 Yardman Wouldn't count him out here while making the second start of his career, as he was never involved with better at Delaware at 43/1 in October. Easier spot and some growth might do the trick.
#4 Point Loma He hasn't stayed late in any of his four career starts, but he might be tighter in this second start back after speeding off and stopping in the comeback run for twice this price.
#7 Nathaniel's Hope He has a slight finishing ability that might serve him well in a spot littered with quitting running lines, but this is also his 17th career start with no discernible upside. Capable player wouldn't surprise on form, but he's a no for me.
Race Summary Check Yardman out ahead of this one, but I think he might be ready for better while dropping into a much softer spot today off the bench. Price might be ok with a big question mark on his overall ability.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Fort Erie - Race #1
#6 SEVEN IS A BREEZE (2-1) Can’t seem to avoid wide trips, works indicate readiness for return.
#2 FOREST SELECTION (7-2) Returns to Canada after surviving long duels for back-to-back victories.
#4 WORKIN OUT (3-1) Beaten fave in Fort Erie allowance last fall, winner of race is 0-8 since then.
Race Summary SEVEN IS A BREEZE rallied widest for two wins and a second when last seen at Fort Erie in the fall. He faces another small field off a series of solid 5F workouts for his seasonal debut. Bet to win and place.
        Fort Erie - Race #3
#5 D’LUCCI BOY (9-2) Well-traveled 5-year-old has shown little in limited starts, all or nothing today.
#2 BREACH OF TRUST (5-2) Showed pulse on Woodbine lawn, sheds 9 pounds.
#3 TIMMINS (9-5) Money burner runs for cheapest claiming price in his 19th start.
Race Summary D’LUCCI BOY traveled a long way to get here and was beat by 40 lengths the only time he ran on turf. But he hails from a good barn, his dam was a three-time winner on the lawn and he can awaken in a weak field. Play a 5-ALL exacta.
        Fort Erie - Race #6
#7 MONEY MATTERS (10-1) Bad recent form, good Fort Erie record, projects ideal trip at a price.
#1 MARTEN RIVER (2-1) Led at stretch call in last five starts, winning once, now draws rail.
#3 LETTING LOOSE (8-1) Stands 3-for-8 at track, will be running late, use in gimmicks.
Race Summary Something has to give and it’s likely going to be the pace in this 5F sprint. MONEY MATTERS at least has the right running style and recent starts under his belt. If he awakens off another claim, he could spring the upset. Bet to win and place.
