Race 7 - Maiden Optional Claiming - 5.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $20400 Class Rating: 73

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. OPTIONAL CLAIMING PRICE $30,000.

            RECOMMENDED CHOICES
            # 6 SAVONA 9/2
            # 2 HIGH GUNNER 3/1
            # 5 BLESSED ANGEL 6/1
My selection for this event is SAVONA. With a reliable 63 average Equibase Speed Fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. Look for a very strong pace improvement from this equine who enters with second time Lasix today. Perren has her trained solidly to break quickly out of the gate. HIGH GUNNER - Has decent Equibase Speed Figures and has to be considered for a wager in this competition. With Lara getting the mount, watch out for this horse. BLESSED ANGEL - Look for a formidable pace improvement from this horse who enters with second time Lasix today. Posted a formidable Equibase Speed Fig in the last race. Can run another good one in this affair.

Santa Anita - Race #3 - Post: 2:04pm - Maiden Optional Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $42,000 Class Rating: 88

              Rating:

              #2 BLUEGRASS GO GO (ML=5/2)

BLUEGRASS GO GO - I think this colt is ready to run a good one. He's had enough outings since the vacation and should be fit. The jock/trainer pair of Maldonado and O'Neill has a strong ROI together. As the only speedy sort in the race, I expect this colt to be long gone. O'Neill is hoping to get a little more out of this colt by adding blinkers today. O'Neill, the trainer, shows intent by adding Lasix in this race. A positive sign.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #3 ABELIEFINTHISLIVIN (ML=6/5), #5 MEGA MOON (ML=7/2), #4 CHAO PHRAYA (ML=4/1),

ABELIEFINTHISLIVIN - Tough to wager on this steed this time. Make him show you something in a short distance affair before you play him in a race of 6 furlongs. MEGA MOON - Almost certainly won't make much of an impression this time. CHAO PHRAYA - I just don't have a good intuition about this mount in this event.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #2 BLUEGRASS GO GO on top if we're getting at least 1/1 odds
              EXACTA WAGERS: 2 with [4,5]

Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #8 - Post: 4:04pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $31,800 Class Rating: 37

                Rating:

                #4 KISS VALENTINA (ML=6/1)
                #8 UNEXPECTEDVALENTYN (ML=5/2)
                #6 WEEKENDING (ML=7/2)

KISS VALENTINA - Trainer, Castro, has been deliberate with this filly off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. Have to make this filly a strong challenger; she comes off a sharp effort on Mar 9th. A wise man taught me to wager on the lone speed horse. Take a look at this horse. Took a class drop last time around the track at Mahoning Valley Race Cour. Castro keeps her at the same level today. I think that's a good move. UNEXPECTEDVALENTYN - Each one of this filly's recent finish positions has been progressively better. A thoroughbred coming back this soon after a nice effort is a good sign. Trainer, Bird, has been deliberate with this filly off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. WEEKENDING - A racer coming back this soon after a nice effort is a good signal.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #10 CATALINA (ML=9/2), #7 FABULOUS CLOWN (ML=8/1),

CATALINA - Tough to wager on this mount in today's event. Make her show you something in a short distance race before you play her in a race of 6 furlongs. This rallier looks to have slight chance without a speed battle on the top end. FABULOUS CLOWN - Finished second in her most recent effort with a disappointing speed figure. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to triumph after that in this bunch.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - KISS VALENTINA - This filly's superior last speed number of 37, against these thoroughbreds, makes her the overwhelming choice.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 KISS VALENTINA is the play if we get odds of 3/1 or better
                EXACTA WAGERS: 4 with [6,8]

                  # 2 COFFEE IN BED 6/5
                  # 3 LIBERAL LADY 8/1
                  # 4 LILY POO 7/2
COFFEE IN BED looks like the wager in here. Competitive shot today with second time Lasix. Should be given a chance based on the respectable Equibase Speed Figure posted in the last race. Has respectable Equibase Class Figures relative to this field - worth a look. LIBERAL LADY - A nice ROI of +37 with this rider and conditioner combo. Has been running solidly lately and will almost certainly be on or close to the front end early on. LILY POO - This filly has been consistently racing well in her latest outings. The Equibase Speed Figure of 90 from her latest contest looks decent in here.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Bee Catcher2-Westward Look; 4-Spirit Maker
                    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Restricted (nw-3) $35,000 older claimers meet over nine furlongs on grass in the Monday lid-lifter in a wide open affair that requires considerable coverage in rolling exotic play. We’ll use three but even that might not be sufficient. Bee Catcher is winless in nine career starts over the local lawn but has several back speed figures that are good enough to beat this field, and from his rail post the Dan Blacker-trained gelding is guaranteed an ideal ground-saving, second flight stalking trip. At 4-1 on the morning line he seems as good as any. Westward Look was nearly 90-1 in a straight $32,000 claiming sprint in his California debut after arriving from the East last month and completely outran those odds when finishing a willing runner-up while earning a career top speed figure. In his first start for trainer Tim Yakteen, the 5-year-old left his previous form behind with a pace-stalking/pressing trip. We’re not sure if he can duplicate that type of performance at this much longer distance, but if allowed to establish the running without pressure he might be able to see out the journey. Spirit Maker is a one-paced grinder exiting a series of tougher starter’s allowance events. Like our top pick, he’s had nine chances without winning over the Santa Anita turf course and clearly isn’t one to trust, but based strictly on numbers he has something of a look, so we’ll toss him in.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 5-Rosy Edge
                    Backups/savers: 1-Kiss My Kat

Forecast: Rosy Edge returns to her claim level and ran very well when second against a similar bottom rung maiden claiming field two races back, an effort that if repeated today should be good enough to earn a diploma. Overmatched on grass in her most recent start when facing tougher maiden $50,000 foes, the daughter of First Samurai adds blinkers for the first time and gets a break in the weights with the switch to bug boy Aguilar. She projects to enjoy a good pace pressing trip and then have every chance from the quarter pole home. Kiss My Kat flashed good early speed in all three of her starts to date but has yet to show any desire to finish under pressure. She’s likely to clear the field and on that basis alone probably is worth tossing in as a saver or a backup on your rolling exotic ticket.

                    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Abeliefinthislivin launches a comeback for trainer Peter Miller and finds a relatively soft spot in his first outing since last summer in this maiden optional claiming main track sprint. Extremely fast on speed figures – he was third behind two of the best colts in the current national 3-year-old ranks in Cave Rock and Practical Move – the son of Arrogate shows a :59 2/5 five furlong breeze at San Luis Rey Downs nine days ago to have him cranked and ready. At 6/5 on the morning line and certain to go lower, he is a no value but highly logical rolling exotic single.

Main ticket (in order of preference): Book Smart
                    Backups/Savers: 2-Wyfire

Forecast: Book Smart, an Emerald Downs invader who hadn’t been out since August and showed only modest form, made his Southern California debut for trainer Mark Glatt and ran lights out in defeat when a close second in a fast, highly-rated dash at this level nearly two months ago. He’s trained steadily since then to remain on edge and will be hard to beat if he can duplicate his dirt form on grass. We can’t say he is bred to improve on the lawn, but based on his numbers he won’t have to. Glatt’s other starter, Wyfire, probably can be included for protection as a backup. Three times second in four career starts over the Santa Anita turf course, the son of Dominus was below his best when unplaced in a similar grass dash here in mid-January but he has back form that makes him a threat and retains Flavian Prat.

Main ticket (in order of preference): Starship Defiant; 5-La Deuxieme Etoile
                    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: There’s nothing to trust in this allowance optional claiming main track miler for fillies and mares but on their best day Starship Defiant and La Deuxieme Etoile should be able to separate themselves from the others. ‘Defiant removes blinkers (love that angle) after finishing a solid runner-up under these conditions last month and not much more will be needed to handle this moderate assignment. She projects to be in a good stalking position and then be able to move when called upon. ‘Etoile stretches out again and may find herself as the controlling speed. Her third place performance over this track and distance three races back charts very well with these and if not pressured early she could take this field a very long way.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Arrest
                    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Arrest lost a toughie when unable to take advantage of a perfect ground-saving trip in a similar restricted (nw-2) mid-level claimer over this course and distance last month, going down by a head after striking the front close home. He removes blinkers, retains Kent Desormeaux, and should draft into a good second flight position and then have dead aim and every chance when the pressure is turned on. Winless in seven starts over the local lawn and just 1-for-13 (with seven seconds and thirds) in his career, the Mike Puype-trained gelding is hard to trust but on paper looks very much like the winner in a moderate affair for the level. At 9/5 on the morning line, he’s the logical top pick in a race that probably should be handled with care.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Coffee in Bed; 1-Getthemoney
                    Backups/savers: 5-Anywho

Forecast: This is a first level allowance race for 3-year-old fillies over the extended sprint distance of seven furlongs but it might as well be a graded stakes based on the talent that it attracted. Coffee in Bed didn’t display any gate speed in her debut but got in gear midway on the turn and then blew away the opposition with a highly impressive performance that resulted in a nearly two length victory. The speed figure was solid for this $500,000 yearling purchase by Curlin, who seems certain to step forward with experience and distance for trainer Bob Baffert. Getthemoney is the quicker of the two and if she returns as well as she left the daughter of Midnight Lute should be hard to catch. When last seen in September at Del Mar she toyed with maidens before being stopped on, and her recent works on the comeback trail for trainer Brian Koriner have been extraordinary. Anywho, a debut winner last fall at Aqueduct, was subsequently purchased at Keeneland in November for $290,000 and returns for new trainer John Sadler. On numbers she’ll need to step it up but her local works indicate plenty of promise and she could easily be a much better type here than she was in New York. Toss her in as a saver.

                    __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ____________________

Main ticket (in order of preference): 9-Precocious Times; 7-Tiergarten
                    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: We’ll double the finale, a maiden $50,000 grass miler for older fillies and mares. Precocious Times sprints like she’ll enjoy two turns and gets her chance after finishing with interest in a grass dash earlier this meeting. She needed to shake off the rust – the daughter of Hard Spun had been off 13 months – so with that tightener under her belt the John Sadler-trained filly appears ready for a career top effort. Tiergarten, second in a pair of photo finishes in her last two starts, won’t have to improve much to finally graduate in this, her seventh career start. For whatever it’s worth, leading pilot Juan Hernandez opts for this Clifford Sise-trained mare over our top pick, who he also rode last time out. The daughter of English Channel projects to settle into a second flight stalking position and then have dead aim and every chance in the final stages.

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

                      March 27, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a competitive Monday night card featuring action from the 2nd leg of the Borgata Pacing Series. The 0.50 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool starts in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 begins in Race 9, and the sequence will be my focus.

                      Race 9

3-Priceless Beach (3-1)-Came off cover with a 54.1 back half but couldn't get the lead and finished a close 2nd with a salty group. This time the field is not as deep, and Miller can have the veteran closer to the leader turning for the wire.
7-This Is The Plan (5-1)-Got some work in from post 7 last time. Finished 7th in the 1st start off the bench and rolled the 2nd half in a snappy 53.3. Could be blasting out and if Gingras gets the top without emptying the tank it could be picture time.

                      Race 10

1-Certifiable (9/5)-Trying hard and hasn't sealed the deal but was in with some tough winners. Could get the top or land in the pocket behind the one below and either can work for a win.
3-Ozone Blue Chip (2-1)-Fits well with this group and should be battling the one above once the wings close to the wire.

                      Race 11

1-Kerford Road A (4-1)-Bumps up after a win and draws the rail again. Brennan could use the post edge over the 2-3-4 and take another picture.
4-Provocativeprincen (5-1)-Blumenfeld claims the 13-year-old for $25k, puts him in a conditioned event and it is Bartlett's choice over #3 who has won 2 straight. Steps-up, is 0-7 on the year, could be overlooked, and offer a nice price.

                      Race 12

1-Gothic Rock (8-1)-Andrew McCarthy won with this veteran 2 back on a sloppy track at this class and he is between the pipes again. The weather forecast calls for rain, so will respect chances and hope the morning line price holds up.
2-Jojo's Place (3-1)-Won last week and was claimed by the Height barn. Steps-up but will probably get on the engine again and try to follow the same plan.
4-Hurrikanekingjames (4-1)-Adamczyk lost this 6-year-old via a claim on 3-6 and then claimed him back in the next start on 3-20. Recent form has been dull but the price should be right to take a swing and will respect the connections.
8-Shark Play (7/2)-Comes off a sharp win at this class and was claimed by Engblom. Has the gate speed for Bartlett to get a close-up seat, and it is best to not overlook as this barn continues to click.

                      $1.00 Late Pick 4

                      3,7/1,3/1,4/1,2,4,8
                      Total Bet=$32

                        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                        Mahoning Valley - Race #5
#1 Time for Cupid She comes back in a super reasonable spot after landing the graduation win last out, and I think she's in line for a pretty good run of things behind a couple forward players. Would love to see her get a patient ride on the fence while hopefully waiting for a seam inside the three-eighths.
#7 Days Remembered She will likely have a little bit of company early on, but she has been a good fit with similar in recent starts and might prove best of the pace. Tries to shake them off and hold?
#11 Rainys Girl She's not all that appealing to me as a betting option if she starts to take some cash, but she's super interesting on paper. She obviously has some issues -- she's a 7-year-old coming off a two-year layoff and making just her third lifetime start, but she has shown a good bit of talent for a cheap horse through two career starts. I don't know.
Race Summary Time for Cupid can land a good inside run here in a spot with three potentially sharp pace players drawn in, and I think she's a really great fit with this group if she can hold form from her last.
                        Mahoning Valley - Race #7
#5 J L's Rockette Speed looks for her fourth in a row, and she is the most committed forward player in this bunch, likely leaving the rest of them chasing early on. She might be able to flash that pace and turn away the outside presser.
#2 Templement She has pretty reliable form, so I'm not totally convinced she has to regress a ton off the big win last out, and I think that race is probably among the better ones that any of these exit. Honest type for a piece.
#7 Purity She should be locked in on the top choice in the early going, as she's quick from the gate but owns a mild rating gear. Think she's probably the one to beat while prompting the pace on the move out of stakes company.
Race Summary J L's Rockette has been putting on a show early in her recent races, and I think she's got a real chance to run these off their feet. Hoping the dropper outside keeps the price playable.
                        Mahoning Valley - Race #8
#8 Unexpectedvalentyn She's probably going to get bet a bit in here, but there just isn't much other finishing ability lined up in this spot, and she at least has some late grinding run that might keep her moving when most of the rest are backing up.
#9 Kiss the Red Head Think she might get a decent enough run in here to make some noise at a mid-range price. The recent form isn't much to look at, but she should be moving late and can get past some of these for a piece.
#6 Weekending Tactical speed might be a decent alternative to the top choice if you're looking for a runner who can stay in touch early and find a bit of run late. Wouldn't surprise.
Race Summary Unexpectedvalentyn has been moving in the right direction in recent races, and I think she'll trip out with this group while spying the speed early.

                          Turf Paradise - Race #3
#2 BOOSICAL LADY (8-1) Dueled 4-wide, tired in long sprint, can use her speed well in third start back.
#4 SHE SAID MY WAY (3-1) Rallied to finish second, between two next-out winners, one to beat.
#5 STAR SO FAR (5-1) Steady series of works, the latest in 1:01 from the gate, gets Lasix for debut.
Race Summary BOOSICAL LADY pressed the pace 4-wide and tired at 6-1/2F on the class drop to this level. The runner-up was a ship-in favorite from Golden Gate and the third-place finisher came back to win at odds-on for a $5,000 tag. Play a 2-4-5 exacta box.
                          Turf Paradise - Race #4
#1 SHORT JOURNEY (5-1) Runner-up rallies in same spot in February, can be speed from rail in return.
#8 SASSY TINKERBELL (6-1) Steps up after 5-wide rally to finish second in local debut, gets in light.
#7 HERSABIGGIRL (3-1) Beaten favorite in short and long sprints at this level, Hernandez sticks.
Race Summary SHORT JOURNEY rallied for a pair of seconds last month at Turf Paradise at this distance, then and ran second on three-day rest in an allowance sprint at Rillito, then ran third in a stakes race. She should be more forwardly place from the rail in this spot and is a good win and place value bet.
                          Turf Paradise - Race #6
#4 THEMANBEHINDTHEMAN (5-1) Gave way in longer route, met repeat winners in prior pair.
#5 JAKE THE GREAT (9-2) Returns in two weeks after he was vanned off as the beaten favorite.
#1 SIDE STREET DAVE (3-1) Hit board in 10 of first 18, hit slump, ran third from outside post in latest.
Race Summary THEMANBEHINDTHEMAN has plenty of long-distance experience, tired in a longer turf-to-dirt route last out and finished third in this spot two back behind Blessed Journey (8-42, $153k), who repeated as the odds-on favorite. Bet to win and place.
