1^st race [Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (3) Venge will make his first start with an extensive work tab that has two fast recent works. The son of Gun Runner is out of a graded-stakes winning dam that earned $685,000 on the track. (1) Clubhouse has three third-place finishes in a row and had early speed in two of them for Todd Pletcher. (4) Login Required crossed the finish line first in his debut at Monmouth Park this summer but was disqualified and placed third. Following a layoff he was second last month at Aqueduct. (6) Kool Kathmandu was third in his debut at odds of 5-1 and finished third behind the third choice from this race.
3^rd race [Alw 50000s, 6F] – (4) Cousin Andrew (C) comes back in two weeks after getting bet down to be the favorite in his first start following a layoff from Saratoga. Linda Rice is good with horses that are making their second start after a break. (5) Cees Get Degrees will start in New York for the first time after four excellent races where he was first or second. He had two recent starts in Kentucky which came after racing in California and moves to the Jacobson barn. (1) Hatch was second in his last two starts at this level. (6) Holey Matrimony has a second and a third in these type of races. He was the horse that came back from a more than two year layoff.

1st race – (4) It’s a Gamble was sharpened in a sprint and should respond to a class drop and stretchout. (2) Speedy Hans missed by a head and may emerge as the main competition. (7) Over the Channel was third behind Speedy Hans and should be a factor here. (6) Sonic Speed will be a stretch threat here. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-6-7.
3rd race – (6) Certain (B) was switched to turf and finished a good second while being claimed by Sisterson. Should turn in a better effort back on dirt. (3) Run Cory Run put in a strong work for his debut and should be a main threat. (2) Emperor’s Appeal rallied belatedly in his debut and cannot be ignored here. (4) Big Data tired in the final furlong of his debut and finished second. Is worth a long look here. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-4-6. Doubles: 2-3-4-6 with 2-3-4-7.
4th race – (3) Kanthari is working sharply for his debut and seems ready for a winning effort. (4) Cajun Puzzler had useful comeback race and should be in better shape for this start. (7) Papa Jojo should make a smooth switch to turf. (2) Allen Diggs looks like the one to catch here. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4. Exactas: 3-4 over 2-7 and 2-7 over 3-4.
7th race – (4) Prince of Iron returned from a layoff with a good effort and should take a step forward here. (2) One America was second at Laurel and should be the main rival. (3) Bird Wildcat will appreciate a return to dirt. (6) Double Play King was second last time and figures to be a key contender here. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4. Exactas: 2-4 over 3-6 and 3-6 over 2-4. Doubles: 2-3-4-6 with 3-4-6-8.
8th race – (6) Tall Girl was a nice maiden winner and can make it two in a row here. (3) Irony should make a smooth transition to turf. (8) Miss New York can make her presence felt in this field. (4) Riding Pretty seems set for a solid try. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-6-8.

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (December 16)

The weekend’s racing gets underway at Busan on Friday with 9 races from 12:30 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile maidens with all but one racing for the first time. (3) GEUMA DEFT blitzed a trial leading for most of it before crossing the line 2nd behind experienced winner Fashion Blade and stopping the clock in a very fast time. If he brings that form to the races, he’ll be a winner on debut here. (12) RUNNING POWER is the only one with experience. It’s good experience too as he was a very narrow 2nd over this distance on November 18th having raced handy throughout. The time was fast and while he has the challenge of a wide draw here, he can build on that. (7) FAST GUN trialled up alongside some experienced horses and while he couldn’t quit e match their times, he showed ability and can go well first up. (2) PIMI and (5) HAPPY BRIANNA are others who can considered for bold showings on debut.

Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

More juvenile maidens although this time with just one racing for the first time. We’re happy to take a chance on him though. (2) SEUNGNIUIYEONGUNG won his trial with a front-running effort in a fair time. He draws nicely here to get on pace again, he’s from the top stable at the track, and he has every chance. (10) GOODY has steadily improved across three starts so far, culminating with 2nd place finish on his latest on November 13th, when settling midfield before quickly racing up to join the leaders and then ran on. He has the fastest time by some margin among those who have tackled the distance before, and he is a big chance here. (11) META QUEEN ran midfield behind Goody on debut but returned on November 11th to run a solid 2nd over 1000M. With some more natural improvement today, she can go close again. (5) DOCTOR PANGPANG and (9) GLOBAL SKY among others in the frame.

Busan Race 3: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

A very ordinary maiden here. (5) ARTHUR KING IJI has hinted at ability across three outings so far with his most recent, a 5th place when on pace over 1200M on November 27th, his best. He draws well here, the step up to seven furlongs can suit, and he has as good a chance as any. Also stepping up in trip is (12) DOCTOR SHARK. She comes in off back-to-back 3rd place finishes at 1000M and 1200M and while she is done no favours by the draw, she has been finishing off her races well and the extended trip could be beneficial. (8) FLEX SHINHWA also has a couple of 3rd place finishes to his name and can be a placing chance again, while (11) CUQUENAN and (4) FIGHT FAMILY, who came home 4th and 6th respectively when racing one another on November 18th, are among others to consider.

Busan Race 4: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Having won an October trial, (2) SEUNGNIMAGIC KING was sent off as favourite on his debut on November 18th and he duly obliged, sitting on pace, and gradually wearing his rivals down for a narrow score in a fast time. He comes up in both class and distance here but draws nicely, is weighted well, and he can maintain his 100% record. (8) GRAPHENE RAP WORLD also comes up in class and trip. She ran 2nd on debut in October before getting her maiden win at start number two over 1000M on November 11th when making all. She carries a light weight again and should be measuring up in this company. (10) WONDERFUL VOW was a winner on debut before struggling in Listed company last time out. She returns to shallower waters here and can be given another chance. (6) MOTHER MOUNTAIN and (9) PUNGUN JOHWA are others who can enter the calculations.

Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(10) HANSEN COD GIRL was an also ran in the Listed Gyeongnam Do Min Ilbo Trophy last month but her form prior to that was good with a win and two 3rd place finishes. The most recent of those 3rd places was over this class and distance on October 30th when she overcame an even wider gate to get on pace and she looks the one to beat here. (3) JEONGDEUN-RO enters off back-to-back 3rd place finishes in all-filly races at this class and distance. She draws nicely here and can be in the placing hunt again. (6) DOCTOR KONGSUNI is yet to win in ten attempts but has no fewer than seven top-five finishes and from a fair draw can be on pace and in this a long way. (7) HALLA BAEKDU and (4) GLOBAL CHOEGO are among others with at least placing claims.

Busan Race 6: Class 5 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

(3) THUNDER FURY got her maiden win two starts back over 1200M before running 2nd on her first try at this class and distance on November 20th when settling back from a wide gate and then running on in a good time. She should have derived benefit from that experience and looks ready to win again here. (10) FINAL SEVEN comes up in class having secured his maiden win at start number three in a fast time over 1200M on November 13th. He was on pace so will have to contend with the wide draw, but he should be competitive here. (4) YOUNG BOSS is the only horse in the race to have won over this distance, something he did on his latest start at this class on November 13th. He comes up 3kg on that mark but can be in the mix again. (11) RUBY STORM gets a nice weight allowance which can balance somewhat the wide draw. He tackles the trip for the first time and can enter the calculations. (9) GALLOP BOY another in the frame.

Busan Race 7: Class 4 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Competitive race but (6) WORLD FOUR A just about has the edge. He returns here following a four-month layoff, but his form prior was very good with him yet to finish outside the top-three after five starts. His solitary win came at 1200M, but he races well at 1300M and looked very well in a trial at the start of this month. This is his first try at class 4 but under a light weight and from a good gate, he can win. (1) HARDY CHARLIE bounced back to this class with a 2nd place in September over 1200M. He comes down in the weights, should be on pace and can be in this a long way. (2) SORI TAEPUNG was a winner at class 5 level over a mile two starts back before running 2nd, again at 1600M, on his first try at this class on December 2nd having led for much of the way around. He makes a quick return here and he can be considered. (11) ALIVE STAR and (10) FLOWING RIVER among others with at least minor money hopes.

Busan Race 8: Class 2 (2000M) Handicap / KRW 90 Million

(2) FLAT BABE was a revelation when running 2nd on the Gyeongnam Governor’s Cup at Group 3 level on November 27th when settling right back and running on past some tiring fillies and mares. She tackles regular class 2 company for the first time, is fairly weighted, and she should thrive on the trip once more. (7) BURUI GEOM comes up in class having won two of his latest three, both over 1800M. He does tend to be an all or nothing type and can mix his form, but he is nicely weighted and worthy of some thought. (5) ALIVE CAPTAIN ran a close 2nd in a fast time over 1800M on his first try at class 2 level on November 18th, settling midfield before running on and beating a few of today’s rivals. He can be competitive here again. (8) CLEAR and (3) SPEED MATCH others who can make an impact at potentially each-way prices.

(2) SPICE ECTON is rapidly up in class having won three from five and finished as runner-up in the other two. His latest win came over this distance on November 18th when he settled towards the rear and then gradually improved before running away from the field. He comes down in the weights, draws very well, and can compete a hat-trick here. (11) YEONGGWANGUILEGEND comes in off a 3rd place at class and distance on November 27th when overcoming the widest gate. He gets set the same challenge here but third=up this preparation, he may be peaking fitness wise, and he can go close. (1) SEONGSIL SIHWA is up in class but nicely weighted and drawn following a front-running win over a mile on November 20th. She can measure up here. (4) DOCTOR CAESAR and (10) ONE PICK others in the hunt in a competitive finale.

RACE 3: OUTASITE (#2)

I have no argument that Cees Get Degrees (#5) is the horse to beat as he makes his first start on the NYRA circuit. He’s been in excellent form recently, particularly since getting back on dirt in Kentucky this fall. The horse he defeated two back, Mr. Thunderstruck, returned to win his next start, improving his TimeformUS Speed Figure by 8 points. And last time he got run down by a pretty talented rival in what may have been a tougher race at this level. However, I am mildly concerned about the barn change, since David Jacobson is getting this horse from Jonathan Wong, who wins at a high rate. He also has plenty of other speed to deal with in this spot, including a few rivals who may have a bit more upside. Cousin Andrew (#4) figures to take some money once again after he was beaten as the favorite last time against claimers. He didn’t get the most comfortable trip that day, having to pause briefly at the quarter pole before rallying between rivals. He will appreciate any pace that develops up front, and he did win over a sloppy track at Saratoga in July. The likelihood of a wet track could be a concern for my top pick, Outasite (#2). This horse got run down when he returned from a layoff at this level last time. However, he had a right to need a start after having not raced in 9 months. He traveled well until the top of the stretch before just getting tired when put to pressure late. I think he’ll be fitter this time, and I don’t mind the rider switch to apprentice Madison Olver. He gets some weight off, and he seems like a horse who responds to a lighter touch, not requiring particularly strong encouragement when he has his mind on running. The pace is a concern, but at least he figures to be a fair price.

RACE 5: CAIRO SUGAR (#1)

It’s pretty obvious that Silver Skillet (#2) is a deserving favorite in this relatively weak NY-bred maiden event. She showed some potential despite settling for minor awards in her first couple of starts sprinting. She made a few moves before flattening out while racing greenly in her debut, and then was hindered by a somewhat tardy start next time. They took a shot in the Maid of the Mist Stakes last time and she was hardly disgraced despite proving no match for the top two finishers. She held off Gambling Girl for third, and that one returned to finish third in the G2 Demoiselle. If she’s going to get beat, I think it could happen from the front end. Cairo Sugar (#1) is an intriguing new face as she ship in from Parx. This filly was quite green in her first couple of starts, especially two back when she was lugging in badly through the lane. The addition of blinkers seemed to straighten her out last time when she switched into a new barn. She also appeared to appreciate the stretch-out in distance, as she battled on gamely all the way to the wire after getting headed in upper stretch. She is arguably stepping up in class despite trying state-bred company for the first time. Yet, that recent 80 TimeformUS Speed Figure puts her in the mix. Furthermore, trainer Alan Bedard sent out a 57-1 winner at Aqueduct in November using this rider. The one runner stretching out that I would want to use somewhere is Lavon (#3). She obviously has to run faster, but she’s been staying on well at the end of her sprints, and she’s out of a dam who was a dirt route specialist.

RACE 7: FUNNY JOKE (#1)

Printrack (#2) is the horse to beat and catch as he seeks to extend his run of good form since getting claimed by trainer Michelle Nevin. In addition to showing improved speed for this barn, he’s also displayed a newfound tenacity in each of his last two starts. He refused to yield when challenged through the stretch two back at Aqueduct. And last time he grudgingly gave way in the last eighth after setting a very fast pace. On TimeformUS Speed Figures, he actually improved to a 107 last time despite settling for second. A repeat of that performance will make him tough to beat, and it’s a good sign that he showed he can handle a sloppy track that day, as he’s likely to encounter similar going here on Friday. The main concern for Printrack is that there is other speed in this field to push him on the front end once again. One horse who should be attending the pace is Good Skate (#5). He’s not as fast as the favorite, but he did earn a competitive speed figure at Saratoga two back. His first start off the claim for new connections last time was disappointing, but he had little chance going 9 furlongs at the N1X level. I like the turnback and slight drop in class, and will be using him. My top pick is Funny Joke (#1). He’s another who is a little light on speed figures compared to Printrack, but I think he can do better here. I didn’t love the trip he got last time when he was just glued to the rail throughout in a race won by a horse who closed outside. That was also a pretty strong $35k claimer and I don’t think he’s meeting a much tougher field despite stepping up off the claim. Most notably, Rob Atras has claimed this horse for Michael Dubb, and they are 6 for 12 (50%, $3.31 ROI) first off the claim together over the past 5 years. He’s also getting this horse from a pair of trainers, Rudy Rodriguez and Orlando Noda, who have been in some slumps recently, whereas the Atras barn has been sending out many live runners lately.
