Saratoga Picks: Spinaway S. superb betting race on September 4
                  By J.N. Campbell

Saratoga Picks: Sunday, September 4, 2022

                  Race 1: 8-2-10-5
                  Race 2: 3-4-6-2
                  Race 3: 3-2-7-5
                  Race 4: 8-10-5-6
                  Race 5: 8-1-6-2
                  Race 6: 4-3-1/1A-8
                  Race 7: 9-1-4-7
                  Race 8: 2-5-4-6
                  Race 9: 4-1-6-2
                  Race 10: 2-6-3-5
                  Race 11: 9-4-1-2
                  Race 12: 3-1/1A-9-4
Most Likely Winner: Pure Pauline #4 (Race 6)
Best Value: Mystic Eyes #2 (Race 8)

Most Likely Winner: (Race 6: Pure Pauline #4, 3/1):

HOF Todd Pletcher is coming to play on Sunday at The Spa … doesn’t he always. Stonestreet Stables needs no introduction, and they are looking to trot out a young homebred by Curlin that looks to be well-bred for her debut. She will be ridden by Irad Ortiz, who is just coming off of serving a suspension. Wrapping up the riding title should be in order for him. Pletcher does everything to perfection, and this one is going to be a talent, with a bright future. She probably will not be 3/1 when this race goes off, but we can hope …

                  Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #4

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 8: Mystic Eyes #2, 10/1):

The Pletcher picks just keep coming, and I am not going to miss playing this filly by Maclean’s Music. A 3-yr-old, not only is she getting Lasix for the 1st time, but she is making a surface switch—turf to dirt. I think that is a great move, and the class drop should be a welcome sight. This sire’s runners were born to sprint. Luis Saez and Pletcher work exceedingly well together, no matter the meet, and he knows how to hustle a mount when it counts. After competing in a number of NYRA stakes races, doesn’t this one make a ton of sense? Shhh … keep it to yourself!

                  Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #2 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

                  Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 11: Dirt, 7F, Spinaway S. (G1), $300k, 2F):

The “featured” Grade 1 Spinaway S. is a last chance for young 2-yr-old filles to make a summer splash. They will be maturing at a rapid rate from here on out, so this purse score could put them ahead in the NYRA Division going back to Aqueduct this fall (Belmont is being held in Ozone Park, fyi …). This could be Todd Pletcher’s big day, and he has a nice daughter of Practical Joke headed to the post. Kaling #1 won her debut for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners in late July with Flavien Prat aboard. If she can replicate the tracking victory, moving from a MSW to a G1, then hats-off to her. Prat is riding particularly well, but he is coming back from a cross country trip to Del Mar … maybe that will play a factor in his being fatigued? Doubt it … just fun to mention. I like this entry, but when it comes to a top choice I am “all in” on Mark Casse’s Wonder Wheel #9. She also gets a SoCal shipping jockey in HOF-er John Velazquez, who went out to ride Bob Baffert’s Country Grammer. Trained by another HOF-er, his mount on Sunday won impressively at Churchill Downs in the Debutante S. $175k. When you post the kind of speed fig that she did, it is one of those markers in the form. Her recent works on the Oklahoma Track speak to the fact that she is ready for her Spa debut. These Into Mischiefs just keep going and going … One other runner that I need to include is “The Coach’s” Naughty Gal #4. Also by Mischief, she won the Adirondack (G3) in early August. Jose Ortiz runs this offense, and wouldn’t it be something to see this filly get to the winner’s circle. It was D.W. Lukas’ birthday last week, so this would be quite a present. Here we go … the Saratoga Sunday is underway!

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Box, 1/4/9

Spa selections 2022: Saratoga picks September 4
In Spa Selections, our correspondent provides his Saratoga picks for key races on today’s Saratoga card!

                    Race 9 – Alw 95000n1x

                    1. #6 Lord Flintshire (6-1) – Was placed closer to the lead last time which didn’t work as well as his usual closing style, but with a lack of pace here, the versatility should give him a leg up

                    2. #5 Frank’s Art (5-2) – After an impressive debut, this Clement trainee came charging a bit too late but still appears to have the most upside in here if he gets the right set up

                    3. #4 Timbuktu (6-1) – This Brad Cox trainee didn’t run his best last time, but still has competitive speed figures compete with this group

                    4. #1A Catch That Party (2-1) – A tough post draw, but this part of the entry looks a bit better winning last time out in an open allowance race with little pace to run into

                    Race 10 – Maiden 88k

                    1. #7 Arisaema (6-1) – Just didn’t break well enough last time to have a chance, but this filly by California Chrome can be a factor if Lezcano has her a bit closer to the lead

                    2. #2 Succulent (7-2) – Steadily improving since the switch to turf, and continuing on this trend puts her in the winner’s circle, but might need a bit more pace to rate

                    3. #3 La Victoria (3-1) – Ran well off the layoff with Irad Ortiz and gets him back in the irons for this one, plus should be near the early pace which is good in this field

                    4. #6 Jocosity (4-1) – Was bet to favorite last time and ran a solid fourth, but still needs to take a step forward to beat some others in here

                    Race 11 – Grade I Spinaway Stakes

                    1. #5 Just Cindy (5-1) – This filly by Justify comes off a layoff after winning the Scuylerville early in the meet, as Saez jumps off Naughty Gal to take this mount for Kenneally

                    2. #4 Naughty Gal (8-1) – Got slow fractions in the Grade III Adirondack last time, but may need to sit in second this time for her best chance of winning here

                    3. #9 Wonder Wheel (3-1) – Might have the most impressive win of this group last time, and any effort close to that should be enough to at least finish in the top two here

                    4. #1 Kaling (7-2) – Gets the slight edge over Aunt Shirley and Sabra Tough who will be better value because of the running style, and should be close enough to have a chance late

                    Race 12 – MC 25000

                    1. #1 Tough Street (1-1) – Probably doesn’t deserve the even money morning line tote, but this entry looks a bit better than the rest which may be enough to win here

                    2. #9 Darn That Song (6-1) – Has finished third in half of his career races, but even in this underachieving group, this one needs to take a step forward to win

                    3. #10 Roz (10-1) – In the money five out of seven lifetime, with two thirds at the Spa this summer so maybe one to hit the board here

                    4. #3 Mouly (5-1) – Take this filly by Practical Joke over Dorothy’s the Boss hoping for a step forward after coming out of an open maiden and two maiden claimers into state bred company

Saratoga Horses in Focus for Sunday, September 4
Posted on September 2, 2022 by David Aragona

RACE 6: TAKE CHARGE BRIANA (#2)

Stonestreet homebred Pure Pauline (#4) is likely to take some money as the only debut runner in this field. She’s out of a dam who won the G2 Black Eyed Susan, who has produced one full-sibling who earned both victories on turf. Todd Pletcher is 4 for 32 (13%, $0.99 ROI) with 2-year-old first time starters in 6.5 to 7 furlong dirt races at Saratoga over the past 5 years. She’s been coming along nicely in her workouts, and was best in company from the gate in that fast drill on Aug. 21. I won’t be surprised if she runs well, but this is a tough spot for a first time starter. There are a few with experience who have a license to improve. Bill Mott sends out a pair of runners, both with upside. I prefer Misintention (#6), a Godolphin homebred who closed decently up the rail in her debut. She’s been working well out of that race, recently looking best in company with debut runner-up Arthur’s Ride, who runs on Saturday. My top pick is Take Charge Briana (#2). This well-bred Lukas filly has been coming along nicely through two career starts, and now takes the next logical step, stretching out to 7 furlongs. She was beaten by some pretty good Todd Pletcher trainees in the first couple of starts, including Kaling, who is a major player in the Spinaway. She showed improved tactical speed last time, which should serve her well from this rail draw. The added distance is not supposed to be an issue for the daughter of Curlin, and it certainly doesn’t hurt to have Prat take over the reins.

                        RACE 9: TIMBUKTU (#4)

I have no major issue with Catch That Party (#1A), who seems like the horse to beat after closing to victory at the starter allowance level last time out. He also ran better than the result indicates two back when blowing the start. He arguably does have the most natural talent of anyone in here, but his deep-closing style does make it a little more difficult to work out a trip. Frank’s Art (#5) may also attract support off his narrow loss on the stretch-out last time. However, I think this horse has gotten fantastic trips and setups in both career starts. He closed into a fast pace on debut in a race that completely fell apart in the late stages, and last time he saved ground for much of the way, riding an advantageous rail path before angling out. I prefer Timbuktu (#4) from that Aug. 10 race. He finished farther back in the pack, but just got the wrong trip. Breaking from the outside post position, he was wide around both turns, which was not a path to success when the temporary rails were down on the inner turf course that week. This horse had run well in his prior start at this level at Belmont, and the slight stretch-out in distance from last time figures to suit him. The other horse that I want to use is Citizen K (#10). I’m not as convinced that the distance suits him, but he did run better than the result would suggest in his first attempt going this far last time. He was very wide into the clubhouse turn and proceeded in the 3-path racing without cover for much of the race. That’s an especially tough trip for a horse who had previously been a closing sprinter.

                        RACE 11: KALING (#1)

This Spinaway has drawn a talented and competitive field of 10 juvenile fillies. The horse to beat is arguably Wonder Wheel (#9), who is seeking her third victory in a row after romping in the Debutante late in the Churchill Downs meet. She doesn’t have a significant speed figure edge this time, but she has trained well over the main track at Saratoga, registering an impressive series of drills leading up to this Grade 1 test. Also in the field are recent Saratoga stakes winner Just Cindy (#5) and Naughty Gal (#4). The former wasn’t beating the strongest field in the Schuylerville, but seems like one that should have no trouble with the added ground. Naughty Gal is a little tough to endorse after she blew the turn and raced so greenly through the stretch of the Adirondack, though she obviously has some talent. However, I’m most interested in a couple of local debut winners. My top pick is Kaling (#1), who was so professional in her debut score early in the meet. She had trained aggressively into that race, but showed no keenness in the afternoon, kindly rating off two horses before passing them at the quarter pole. She strikes me as one that should love this 7-furlong distance, and I’m very encouraged by the way she’s trained out of that victory. The other filly that I want is Leave No Trace (#6), who figures to be a better price. She won a weaker auction-restricted race on debut, but she traveled strongly into a fast pace to break the race open that day. The pacesetter returned to win with a much faster speed figure in her second start, and I won’t be surprised when this one has a step forward in her.

DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, September 4, 2022

                          DRF Staff

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:08 SAR 2nd BIG ENGINE (#1, 10-1) scored with a big figure shortly after being claimed by Rudy early in the year while taking advantage of a contested pace, then landed in three straight much tougher races and was not involved; good effort two back when giving game chase to a loose winner on a rated pace; barns struggles have continued but his 7yo can contend with his good race and is going to be a price. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:25 GP 3rd JOE'S HAD ENOUGH (#2, 5-1) didn't do much in his debut here Aug. 6 but not only was that his debut it came for nearly 3 times this tag. He can benefit from that run and today's drop and he's bred for dirt. Fawkes has super 2nd-time-out numbers as well. His lone sib is full-bro Cupid's Ghost (7-1-0-0, $11K). -Michael Hammersly | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:10 CBY 1st MOONSHINE MOXY (#3, 9-2) is 3 for 6 on this dirt and 0 for 8 doing anything else. Maybe a wet track helped last out but are you certain? Connections find another good spot and this filly draws fine all with Lindsay returning. This barn is 11% with horses that won their last race and that is fine with us if this gal is anywhere near morning line of 9/2. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:16 SAR 4th MAJESTIC TIGER (#3, 10-1) had little chance last time when rated wide off a slow pace going a mile; ran very well over course and distance two back while making late ground on the 1-2 finishers, who were up front all the way; had been racing in good form all year and this is the right level. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:40 MTH 6th EQUALJUSTICEFORALL (#6, 5-1) has steadily improved with each start in terms of Beyers, and that last figure he posted makes him the one to beat in this field; his running style means he's at the mercy of the race flow but if he gets an honest pace to chase he should make a strong impact in the lane. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:47 SAR 5th ME 'N SAP (#4, 12-1) improved when switched to turf last year before having that campaign cut short; good effort to win off the layoff back on the grass, and he has continued in good form up here with two less-than-ideal trips surrounding a tough beat two back; needs the right trip but he is not overmatched in here. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:11 MTH 7th VIKRAM (#4, 5-1) is quick from the gate but he also has a rating gear, and in this speed-loaded sprint he could fall into a very good spot in terms of race flow, as he has shown he can take back off the leaders and make one run; claimed out of each of his last four starts and now up in class for his new connections. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:44 WO 6th AMALFI SKY (#3, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Ron Gierkink). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:52 CBY 6th COLOR ME LEGENDARY (#5, 10-1) won his debut but then stumbled at the start in his second start versus first time winners. His third start was poor but he was trying two turns for the first time. His 377 distance Tomlinson tells us sprinting is best for now. A more outside post is another plus as is 10-1 morning line. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:05 LAD 1st FOREVER FAMILY (#1, 10-1) has some speed and adds ground while switching to the turf. We think both of those will help according to 304 turf Tomlinson and 347 distance Tomlinson. We spy a local work and it was sharp. Morales gets a leg up and often rides for this barn. A good price rounds out the appeal. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:18 WO 7th SOUPER WATSON (#3, 6-1) was in excellent Tapeta form, which included a fast N1X triumph, prior to a non-threatening sixth most recently on the turf. The closer could be along for all the spoils in this conditioned allowance/optional claimer on the main track. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:33 LAD 2nd THIRSTY SISTER(#3, 12-1) may not have cared for the green last out. This barn is 15% turf to dirt and 12% route to sprint. Route speed should come in handy today but it is the rider switch to Del-Cid that we like the most. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:01 LAD 3rd MAU MAU (#3, 10-1) just missed a Beyer turf top in his most recent and now goes second time this sod. This gelding draws great and gets good race flow. In fact, there is a lot of speed in this race. This guy will get to save some early ground and is bred to like the grass going two turns. We are expecting a nice price to entice. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:28 LAD 4th SHESMYBROKER (#3, 12-1) just got a nice confidence boost last out and now tries this dirt for the first time. Local fast works tell us she likes it here. Race flow is just plain fast so this mare should trip out well. We like that Lozada ends up here and the price could be double digits. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:28 WO 9th ANARCHY (#4, 8-1) rushed OS/$40K maidens over five furlongs on the inner turf the only time he tried the grass in his penultimate outing. With the rail in lane 3 on the main turf, he could wire this N1X field going 6 1/2 furlongs. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:34 CBY 7th DESERT GLOW (#10, 12-1) is stuck outside but there ends the knocks. She is a new turf horse that didn't get a clean trip last out. Notice that connections once again find a spot where this filly can't be claimed even though the meet ends in a few weeks. A good break is key as this filly can't afford to lose a lot of ground into the first turn. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:11 SAR 11th NAUGHTY GAL (#4, 8-1) showed potential in her debut going short, then improved rapidly to win her next start impressively with a 75 Beyer; didn't land in the strongest Adirondack last time but was clearly best once again, despite getting out all through the stretch; can afford no mistakes vs. this much stronger field but she is a forward 2yo and the seven furlongs works for her. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:49 LAD 7th LONG WARRIOR (#8, 15-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:10 DMR 7th The visually impressive maiden win by second-time starter BRIEFCASE GIRL (#9, 5-1) stamps her as an exciting prospect. She ran way with a burst of late speed to win a turf sprint by more than three lengths, and now stretches to a mile. Longer distance, tougher rivals, but the Hit It a Bomb filly looks up to the challenge. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:25 GG 6th MEET THE SHERIFF (#4, 7-2) can win his second turf sprint of the year if he can avoid being part of a wicked speed duel. Trained by Isidro Tamayo, Meet the Shirreff has ample speed to set the pace, but did win earlier this year by closing from fourth. -Steve Andersen

Today’s Horse Racing Tips September 4th

A very quiet day of racing on Sunday in the UK, with two cards only but some competitive and interesting action as a result. York are sure to have a huge crowd for a rare fixture away from Saturday’s, and there are some fascinating handicaps on the card for excellent prize money. For NH fans, Fontwell is the other meeting on the afternoon, and they will welcome the recent rain that has fallen to help the field sizes hold up and ease the ground a touch.

Ed Walker’s 4-y-o filly returned to her best form when fourth in a Newbury Group 2 last time out behind Jumby, and should relish this easier assignment in listed class at York on Sunday. A strong pace back at six furlongs should be ideal, and she can swoop late under Richard Kingscote if enjoying any luck in running when coming with her customary late charge.

Karl Burke has had a fantastic summer at all levels of competition , and he has a inherited a very well handicapped horse here (with the sad retirement from training by Joseph Tuite). There could well be dramatic improvement to come for the stable switch, and the 3-y-o went with plenty of zest from the front when last seen out at Windsor in June for his previous yard.

                              Races 1-2 (12:35 p.m. ET/9:35 a.m. PT)

                              SPECIAL $5 DAILY DOUBLE

                              Race 1: 2,11

                              Race 2: 3,6

                              (cost $20)

                              Race 4 (2:16 p.m. ET/11:36 a.m. PT)

I like #8 Jade’s Dream (8-1 morning line). Veteran NY circuit trainer Carlos Martin turns to sharp apprentice rider Jose Gomez in effort to get gelding home. Loss of blinkers, shorter distance and return to turf puts guy in Winner’s Circle — or is Mr. Ed dreaming?

                              Wager: Win.

                              (cost $20)

Mr. Ed likes #5 Stunningly (8-1 morning line) for Steve Assmusen and Jose Ortiz. Stretching out, early speedster will benefit from Churchill Downs sprint debut. Wager: $20 to Win as well as $2 Exacta and Trifecta Boxes of 5/1,3,4.

                              (cost $38)

                              Race 9 (5:01 p.m. ET/2:01 p.m. PT)

I’m betting on #6 Lord of Flintshire (6-1 morning line). On-the-rise trainer Jorge Abreu takes blinkers off and rehires Jose Lezcano as he sends colt out in search of second lifetime victory. He’s been very oh-so-close in last three races, including open allowance in last. Wager: Win.

                              (cost $20)

                              Races 9-12 (5:01 p.m. ET/2:01 p.m. PT)

                              Mr. Ed likes a $0.50 Pick 4

                              Race 9: 1,4,5,6

                              Race 10: 2,3,4,5

                              Race 11: 1,4,8,9

                              Race 12: 1,3

                              (cost $64)

                              Race 11 (6:11 p.m. ET/3:11 p.m. PT)

I’ll round out my card backing #8 Aunt Shirley (5-1 morning line) for sharp trainer Rudy Brisset, who attracts meet’s leading rider Irad Ortiz Jr. Toss muddy debut at Ellis Park. Daughter of Justify ready to rock ‘n’ roll in Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes. Wager: Win.

                              (cost $20)

                              TOTAL WAGERS: $182
