Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Early Pick 5 Analysis

Tonight, the headliners on the 12-race Woodbine Mohawk card are 2 and 3-year-olds battling in Ontario Sires Stakes Gold action. The 0.20 Pick 5 begins in Race 1. The sequence has a $100,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 1

4-GP Dreamin (9/2)-Has been racing well and could benefit from a 2-hole trip behind #5. At the very least should be a gimmick possibility and a win could add some juice to the Pick 5 payout.
7-Memo (5/2)-McNair should leave and probably only has to tackle the one above to claim the point. That's the usual game plan and fits well with this crew but hasn't sealed the deal in a long time. Went off at 7/5 in last and seeing similar here.
8-Dream Nation (3-1)-Got the top early in the mile but faded versus better. This is a more comfortable spot and could beat this group coming off a helmet.

Race 2

1-Dabra Day (4/5)-Odds-on choice should be bet down off the morning line. Has the look of a winner unless a break happens. But will bank on Roy being able to keep the young filly on a path to the winner's circle.

Race 3

1-T C Scandal (6-1)-Gets post relief, a new set of hands in McNair and should offer a solid price. Looking for an alert start and to be in the hunt at the wire.
5-Celia Bayama (9/2)-Back in town and back in the Moreau barn with Filion steering. That's a nice combo plus should enjoy the company. Has hit the board in 6 of 9 here with 1 picture and best to not overlook.
8-Tuggingoncredit (3-1)-Needs the right trip from this post but the last line was better than it looks. McClure should be leaving and can land on top or in an up-close seat. Looking for a big try and could take its 7th picture in 25 Wbsb starts.
10-Hallsglensmavis (5/2)-Likes to finish 2nd as that happened 9 times this season and 5 in a row until winning the last start. That score was the 1st race for the Barrington barn since being claimed. Will offer a better price from this post and does figure to be in the mix but it won't be as easy to land on the point this time.

Race 4

6-Timestorm (7/2)-Drops, 2nd time Lasix and looking for only the 3rd win this year plus the Auciello barn has been cold. So, there are some cross currents but should be forwardly placed and can be there at the wire.
7-Darkangeldesbois F (15-1)-Has been on the shelf since 8-15 but did have 2 nice qualifiers here at the end of September. Makes its Mohawk debut, Roy will be steering and looks like a play at long odds.
10-HP Royal Theo (3-1)-Raced well versus better and now makes a meaningful drop. The 0-10 record this year is an issue but can top this group and the post helps the price.

Race 5

7-Spicey P (8-1)-McNair returns, he has had success in the past and should leave to be forwardly placed. Getting on the engine without using much gas could be the ticket to a picture. Might get the jump on the field and be tough to catch.
10-Take A Gamble (3-1)-Comes off a couple of quick miles and will likely be bet off those lines despite the post draw. Can handle this crew with a sharp steer, rolled the back half in 54.3 in last.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #4

#2 Wild Irish	She showed some pace before giving way last time out, and she returns with Lasix with some room to improve off that first try. Anything like the 6/1 ML price would feel attractive.
#4 Patti D	She brings really reliable form with her to this one, but she has had her share of chances after nine career starts, and she may have to settle for another underneath slice with these.
#10 Huntress Moon	She draws well to avoid trouble out of the gate in this debut run, and she's meeting a group in which she won't have to be a star to score at first asking.
Race Summary	Wild Irish has a little bit of speed to use out of the gate, and she has a right to stick around better this time around while racing with Lasix.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #5

#7 Royal Engagement	She ran well in a couple of stakes tries before a dull run with Grade I company last time out, and she scored in her debut over the local footing. Looks likely to be tough with these.
#3 Battle Charge	She didn't earn a big figure in the maiden win, but she has been heading in the right direction through three starts and keeps the leading rider aboard for this one.
#10 True Blue Pearl	She was pretty solid in the debut score when tracking the pace from close range, and she should be in line for a great trip while spying the pace from the wide draw.
Race Summary	Royal Engagement should appreciate the cutback after trying Grade I company at a mile, and there's nothing in here like what she faced last time out.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #7

#2 Vintage Kitten	He has been pretty effective around two turns in recent starts and stacks up well with these, but I'd want every bit of the 4/1 ML price as he is still toiling at this level with a 1-for-22 career slate.
#6 The Programmer	Nothing wrong with his local form since adding blinkers, and he should be in line for a great trip at what figures to be an underlaid price.
#4 Templet	He might like the local footing for the new barn, and he has a bit of positional pace to use in this spot. Price should be right to give him a look.
Race Summary	Vintage Kitten might get the right trip with these while finishing from a bit off the pace, and this might be the right kind of field for him to handle after struggling to get over the top at this level.

Indiana Grand - Race #3

#3 Channel Won	Has been sporadic in his appearances since last December and was claimed out of a win at Fair Grounds; resurfaced at Canterbury in July and didn't fire. Has a lot of class to him and can be very tough at this level.
#4 Living Vicariously	Beat N3L claimers at Colonial last out, and that was his good effort in four races; speed makes him dangerous.
#9 Boa Nova	Missed by a nose last tie and won going this distance two back; has a good closing move and will be a serious threat again.
Race Summary	Channel Won has beaten better in his day and can be a big player in his first in three months.

Indiana Grand - Race #5

#1 Rocky Rush	Had a win and a second vs. open company, to whom he is no stranger; can be in the mix from the start and has been finishing well.
#4 Evil Eye	Missed by a nose last time and has two wins and two seconds in his last four; always a factor over this course.
#3 Jimmy D	Was fourth going 1.5 miles at Kentucky Downs and has been factor as he's traveled around; last won three races back at Ellis.
Race Summary	Rocky Rush can benefit from a ground-saving journey and has the speed to save position; can be there at the end.

Indiana Grand - Race #7

#2 Treaty of Paris	Was up in time at Kentucky Downs and was third in his last appearance over this course; finishes well and can get the candy in this one.
#4 Bernadette the Jet	Was second in her latest and is usually right in the ballpark here; broke her maiden three races back and proved last time she fits at this level.
#9 Shush	Broke her maiden at Arlington in her 12th career starts and has several races on her form that would make her good candidate for the exotic plays in here.
Race Summary	Treaty of Paris sprinted to a win last time but also has done well going two turns; in good form and the one to beat.

We like Villefranche on Monday evening getting a half goal head start to keep things competitive against Annecy over in the French National soccer league.
Villefranche come off a red-hot run of four straight wins but face an Annecy side who have won four of their last five themselves in a true top 3 table clash in the league.
Villefranche travel well however and are one of only two undefeated teams on the road this season, losing just once to Annecy outright over their last five H2H's as well.
We expect this to be another close encounter and like the value on the away side catching a half goal headstart here on Monday as they travel to the South-East to take on Annecy.

TIME TO SHOOT looks to be a decent contender. He has been running solidly and the Speed Figures are among the strongest in this group of animals. Looks very good to be on the lead at the first call. The speed figure of 79 from his latest race looks very strong in here. FALCONS FURY - Is worth looking at and may be a bet - strong Equibase Speed Figures (81 average) at today's distance and surface recently. With Dominguez uptop him, this colt will probably be able to break out sharply in here. HOOKED A GOODWIN - Going in a dirt route race gives this gelding a quite good shot. Always hard to beat Puhl and Gonzalez working together, winning 20 percent of their races.

This equine is tops in earnings per start. She looks good in today's clash. MONKEY ON MY BACK - A horse coming back this promptly after a good race is a good omen. The improved speed ratings over the last three races is solid. Swan drops her in this event ready to go.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 MY LUCKY HEART (ML=5/2), #3 TUA (ML=5/1),

MY LUCKY HEART - Finished third last time. Would have to get better to finish in the money in today's race. HEAR ME ROAR - Rode this horse on Aug 29th and Guerra is right back in the irons in today's contest. Ran against the males in her last race on Aug 29th. Sophisticated bettors will tell you that this racer has strong pace. I always like to see a filly getting Lasix for the second time. This one fits the bill. Another way to determine class is earnings per race. This mount has the highest in the field. I think she'll be close at the finish line. I'll bet that this filly even surprised her connections when she made her first start on August 29th and finished second. LIPSTICK LADY - I like that last effort on Sep 15th at Canterbury Park where she finished third.

MIDNIGHTONTHENILE - Don't think this horse is worth 5/2 in this event. BYE BYE JILL - In this circumstance, this pony's inability to close in the last contest is a troubling signal. Usually I need a sprinter to have some recent success in sprint races in order to wager on her. LEA N ACTION - I predict a disappointing effort for this equine in this race.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - LIPSTICK LADY - Moving to dirt today, from last race on the turf at Canterbury Park. This thoroughbred has a good chance to pickup her first win against these horses.

I think STORMY SUMMER is a strong choice. Should come out sharp - I have liked the way this mare has moved rapidly to the lead recently. Must be given consideration in this competition if only for the solid Equibase Speed Fig earned in the last contest. Has a strong record at the distance and surface, which makes me have to support this mare. FEATURE CREATURE - She should be considered given the very good speed figs. Should be considered based on the quite good Equibase Speed Figure put up in the last contest. PIQUET - Earning some good dough in dirt route events. Exhibits the look of a money-making play, averaging a solid 78 speed figure which is one of the top in this group.
