Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

Yonkers Raceway begins the week with a solid 10-race card. The feature goes in Race 7, an Open Handicap Pace with a $45,000 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 also begins in Race 7, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 7

3-Pyro (6-1)- Will go deeper in this leg looking to beat the ML chalk who drew post 7 and will be a tiny price. Steps-up but so do 3 others. Dube is the regular pilot, and he has gate speed to use. This Herrera trainee can be put in play early in the mile and should be in the hunt.
4-Rockapelo (4-1)-Shows a win at the Open Handicap class and Brennan can look to leave or race off cover. Has drawn outside in the last 2 and this post draw should help the cause.
5-Simple Kinda Man (4-1)-Steps-up after a win and has cashed a check at this class recently. Draws well, is in form and Yonkers record is a solid 7 wins in 18 starts.
6-Nandolo N (9/2)-Raced against the Preferred kind at the Big M and finished 2nd there and 2nd here the race before at this class. Should be a player with a smooth trip and an alert start.

Race 8

1-Funknwaffles (3-1)-Alagna entry drops to a more comfortable spot and with this post draw Buter has some choices. This 7-year-old has hit the board in 12 of 20 with 7 pictures.
6-Hickfromfrenchlick (7/2)-Regular pilot Mark MacDonald steers for the Schnittker barn and this will be the 2021 Yonkers debut for this 5-year-old. The game plan could be to get the point and has the gate speed to do so. Best to not overlook, fits and has won 3 of 5 here.

Race 9

2-Splash Brothers (7/5)-Lost by a nose at this class last week after being used from the 8 hole to get on the engine. This post draw should help and comes right back in sequence instead of missing a start. Went off at 1-2 and probably will be bet down here as well. Last week's winner isn't in this field, and got through on the rail after a 2-hole trip. This 4-year-old should be back in the winner's circle for the 5th time this year.

Race 10

1-Escapetothebeach (3-1)-Looking for more after a dull effort in last. Does its best work racing near the top of the stack and Kakaley should have this Morgan trainee forwardly placed leaving from the rail.
7-Bettor Memories (9-1)-Comes off an even try versus better and missed a start. Burke entry has enough gate speed to get a good seat and be in the mix at a nice price. Using and trying to beat the program favorite #4.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #3

#3 Grounded	Can't imagine getting the 5/2 ML price at post time, but it'd feel like a really nice number if he offered it. He has been really solid in a couple of local starts and is bred to love the added ground.
#4 Vintage Kitten	He's already proven around two turns, but his two local starts have produced wildly different results. Chance, but I'd want something better than the ML price.
#1 Saint Marco	He brings pretty solid recent form with him to this one, and he might wind up getting a pretty cozy trip in the pocket from this inside draw.
Race Summary	Grounded should get a great trip right up near the top in this one while trying two turns for the first time, and both sides of the pedigree suggest this stretchout will not be a problem.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #5

#11 Night Cap	This is going to be a big test to try stakes company off the Finger Lakes runs, but she has been impressive so far and should get a nice prompting trip from the outside.
#4 Just One Time	She looks like the one to beat off a very easy stakes score with PA-breds last time out when getting over the local footing for the first time, and she should get a first-over run with these.
#8 Be Sneaky	Her sprint form stacks up okay with this bunch, but she may not offer a really appealing price while trying the local footing for the first time.
Race Summary	Night Cap can play with these at a price from the high draw, as there are a couple of speed players she can press in the early stages, and she has finished off her races with some gusto.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #7

#8 Strugar	Worth a look here while getting over the local surface, as he turned in a couple of really sharp tries over Turfway's synthetic footing over the winter. He seems like a good fit with these.
#4 Race Driver	The form is there for him to be tough, but it's also not a great sign that he's dropping in for a tag for the first time off the bench for the new barn. Tough call at a likely underlaid price.
#6 English Tide	He occasionally shows a little bit of finishing ability, and that might bring him along for a piece of this late at a price.
Race Summary	Strugar might like the local course after producing some sharp tries at Turfway this winter. He's a good fit with these and should get a great trip tracking the pace.

Indiana Grand - Race #3

#1 Good Sugar	Ran an even sixth in a fast race last time and can keep good position along the rail; was a sharp third two back and can win if he runs a similar race.
#6 Son of Batman	Was second vs. similar last out and has been good in two of his last three; can be a strong factor again.
#2 Manuelito	Made a mild close to fourth last out and has run well without winning his last four; fits well with these.
Race Summary	Good Sugar was shuffled back last out and has enough speed to keep good position and has the kick to prevail.

Indiana Grand - Race #8

#5 Oro de Tejano	Has been too late in her bid against stronger company and should be able to catch up at this level.
#3 Mr. Gary D	Drops in class and will probably answer the wake up; ran an even fourth in a much tougher race last time out.
#1 Bizerk	Gets back to the turf after his last one was moved to the main track; was a closing third two back and can be a factor from the beginning.
Race Summary	Oro de Tejano moves over to the turf and has been calling out for two turns at this level.

Indiana Grand - Race #9

#6 Strong Illusion	Has been in tougher spots than this and comes in off a fifth; likely to be close-up from the start, and that's when she does her best.
#4 Myers Tiger	Has some easy wins on her form and should be able to handle the step up in class; in a good spot for her first one on turf.
#10 Lieutenant Kitty	Lost by a nose last time out and has some races on her form that would get it done here; makes her first turf attempt.
Race Summary	Strong Illusion has a turf background and takes on many that haven't tried the grass; has speed and can be in good position throughout.

She should be tough, coming off a first place finish in her race on March 20th on a sluggish track. Is ranked number one in the field in earnings per start. A solid try in this race can add to the lifetime earnings. ARROWWOOD - Runco brings her back again. I advocate you stick with this strong filly. SHYLA GIRL - When you handicap turf races, it's always a good idea to look for a thoroughbred who has a win over the course. Flores's agent must like anytime Udall gives them a mount; win percentage together is out of sight. Running 7 furlongs on the turf, you've have to look at horse's turf figures. This horse has the tops in the bunch.
