Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

      June 15, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
Woodbine Mohawk Park has a 10-race card set for tonight. The 0.20 Pick 5 with a $100,000 guaranteed pool kicks off the action. The 0.20 Late Pick 4 begins in Race 7 and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 7

3-Spittin Chicklets (9/2)-Hasn't raced since 10-19-20 but has qualified 4 times since, twice recently. Has hit the board 2 times in 8 starts at Wbsb and did face stakes company. Should be in the hunt and could break its maiden in 12th try.
9-Shes A Comedian (3-1)-Hoosier invader appears to be much faster than the rest but this is a 3-year-old filly making its 2nd lifetime start. Looks like a must use and this race consists of an interesting group.

      Race 8

2-Alwaysyourway (7/2)-Beat the $12k claimers back in April at Wbsb and has been racing on the East coast without much success. But has been racing, that should help and could get sucked around with this post draw.
4-Jaydens Place (3-1)-Another making its 1st start for a new barn, this time it's the Moreau-Filion connection. Will respect chances of being ready for a big try.
6-Mister Goodro (15-1)-Was claimed for $8k before the break and now makes the 1st start for Puddy and his usual pilot Henry. Won his last by 6 lengths and will take a swing at this price in a race without a standout.

      Race 9

5-Julerica (3-1)-Raced well before the break and will take a swing the connections have this veteran ready to fire hot off the bench. Winner in 13 of 43 starts at Wbsb could offer a fair price. McClure steers and he knows well.
6-Legion Seelster (5/2)-Makes 1st start for the Puddy barn after being claimed for $30k on 3-27. Henry has some choices with this post. Handy 5-year-old could get on the point but if not, should still be racing near the top of the stack.

      Race 10

3-Cold Freeze (7/2)-Fits with this crew and should be in the hunt. If Jamieson finds some liver cover and the fractions are honest it could be picture time.
4-Twin B Sunkissed (3-1)-Had a miscue in the last qualifier and is only 1-11 lifetime and 0-9 here but this is a soft spot for her 2021 debut. Was competitive in 2020 facing some of the best 2-year-old fillies at Wbsb and JMac should be able to work an efficient trip with this post draw.
9-Sweet Pink (6-1)-Bettors Delight 3-year-old filly is another who should like the company. Has some decent gate speed so Drury should be able to fund a good early seat and could cash the top check at a nice price.

      0.20 Late Pick 4

      3,9/2,4,6/5,6/3,4,9
      Total Bet=$7.20

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Parx Racing - Race #6
#6 La Waun He looks likely to be quickest from the outside, and he isn't meeting the deepest field today. Wouldn't want much shorter than the 2/1 ML offering to land here on the hike.
#3 Fortheluvofbourbon He ran okay in that last one when racing off the bench, and he has some room to move forward today with that run under his belt. Best stuff would do the trick.
#5 Brilliant Chase Price player may be able to get in the mix late after running an improved race last out in that third start off the break. If he can build on that effort, he has a high enough ceiling to be competitive with these.
Race Summary La Waun should be tough with sharp pace from the outside draw, and there doesn't seem to be a ton of other serious pace to hassle him in the early going, and he has turned in a couple of effortless scores at this trip.
        Parx Racing - Race #7
#4 Atta Kid Willing to take a swing here off the bench, as this guy fired fresh on the Penn turf last year and might get the right kind of setup in a race with a handful of forward players. Comes alive at a price?
#6 Crazy Kater That was a decent comeback run when going evenly with better at Pimlico on Preakness Day. If he can hold that kind of form here, it might be good enough to get him home at a mid-range number.
#1/1A Ness Entry #1A Bouncing Around is the better half of this entry, but he has failed to hit the board in three turf starts. His recent form stacks up well with these on the surface switch, while there is a little bit of decent back turf form for the #1 You Must Chill.
Race Summary Atta Kid should offer a nice number while racing off the bench, but he has run well off the layoff before and has some finishing ability in a race where that may be a benefit.
        Parx Racing - Race #11
#2 Not Shy She's not totally exposed after just four starts, and she showed a bit of life when trying claimers for the first time. Blinkers on today for the new team, and she'd be plenty attractive at something like the 4/1 ML price.
#9 Tilsa She missed by just a nose last out when leading almost every jump, but she has now had a dozen chances and probably doesn't offer fair value on the board today.
#6 Pegasus in Flight She brings some pretty solid turf form and a good comeback race with her to this one, and she ran okay against slightly better in a couple of local tries to open her career.
Race Summary Not Shy can be tough with these while taking another drop for this local debut. She might be a touch more tactical while adding blinkers today, too.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Pocono Downs - Race #1
#4 FOLLOW YOUR NOSE Followed winner after pace slowed, second best upon arrival from Florida.
#7 AVERYS HAILSTORM Rallied behind odds-on winners for minor awards at 73-1 and 83-1.
#8 SWEETONTHEBEACH Slowed pace in second quarter, tired in lane as fave, should clear from post 8.
Race Summary Follow Your Nose flushed out and followed the 5-2 runaway winner, finishing a clear second after five weeks away. She beat many of the same rivals she faces again. Play 4-7, 4-8 and 7-4 exactas.
          Pocono Downs - Race #3
#1 BEACHBLANKETLINDY Projects the right trip to upstage recent runner-up finishes.
#6 HURRIKANEMYSHANNON Late-running longshot should be used in gimmick wagers.
#2 DIXIE CHICK Stayed flat, romped at short price, draws good post.
Race Summary Beachblanketindy rallied for a pair of seconds behind the winning favorites and should sit a good trip from the rail in a speed-laden field. Play a 1-2-6 exacta box.
          Scioto Downs - Race #1
#9 SUNDANCEDIAMOND Good fit on best, but must stay flast from difficult post.
#5 ATLAS PEAK Last won in same spot but a non factor in four starts since then.
#4 TT'S D-JAY Solid numbers, seeks 17th victory, use underneath on exotic tickets.
Race Summary Sundancediamond is an all-or-nothing type play. He starts from post 9 and broke stride twice recently, but if he duplicates the two photo-finish setbacks since May, he is well worth the 6-1 morning line price. Play a 9-ALL exacta.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Indiana Grand - Race #2
#7 Defence Model Has turned his fortunes after dropping out of maiden specials; dropped to maiden $5K and lost a photo, then stepped up to maiden $10 and was a clear winner after turning back challenges throughout.
#1 Sent for His Glory Didn't fire last time but was against allowance company and had been fairly close in three prior to that one; likely to be in the mix from the start.
#3 Truckin' On Was an even third last out and is capable of battling for the lead in this one; expect a good effort.
Race Summary Defence Model was sharp in turning back rivals last out and that gameness gives him the edge this time around as well.
            Indiana Grand - Race #6
#3 More Good Times Has been with decent company and comes in from Kentucky, where he didn't reach a threatening position; was an allowance winner at Fair Grounds. Can close strongly and should come up big in his first local attempt.
#5 Bloody Mary Mornin Drew clear vs. similar here last out; has taken three of four local starts.
#2 Breeze Rider Was a wire-to-wire winner at Arlington last out and has taken three of six grass starts; troublesome on the front end.
Race Summary More Good Times is a deep loser that should be able to turn around his form here; one to hold off.
            Indiana Grand - Race #8
#2 Secretary At War Turns back from a two-turn race and was an easy winner last November in his latest five-furlong turf run. Can finish well in this spot.
#5 Rolin With Olin Had a clear lead inside the final sixteenth and was caught in the last jump; could take them all the way.
#4 Midnight Patriot Seeks his third straight win and has climbed up the class ladder lately; tough close to the lead.
Race Summary Secretary At War is back to a spring after trying 7.5 furlongs around two turns and gets a good pace setup.

              Johnny D: Royal Ascot Day 1 Preview | Tuesday, June 15, 2021

              June 14, 2021 | By Johnny D
Used to be that yours truly couldn’t give a leaky brolly for racing across the pond at Ascot Racecourse. Then, in 2009, US-based trainer Wesley Ward won the Windsor Castle stakes at the venerable meeting with 33-1 Strike the Tiger and it was big news. I wondered, why? Stateside, Ward, seemingly wins dozens of 2-year-old dashes and no one blinks. The next day, Ward won again with Jealous Mary in the Grade 2 Queen Again and the Brits were as apoplectic as if Big Ben had been muted.

In 2016, on opening day, the missus and I actually ‘went racing’ at Ascot and it was as much a spectacle as it appears on broadcasts. We touched base with old pals Ward, jockey Frankie Dettori and trainer John Gosden; proudly watched as US-based mare Tepin and jockey Julien Leparoux won the Grade 1 Queen Anne and applauded as the Queen Mother arrive in splendor. Unfortunately, we misfired with bookies on the color of the Queen’s hat; the first, but not nearly the last, errant punt of the afternoon. Despite all that, for some reason, the wife seemed most interested in a gander at a pre-Meghan Prince Harry.

Also, that day, for the first and only time in my life, I purchased a ‘bag of champagne’ for my wife. It was a split of Veuve Clicquot travelling in a clear plastic bag, including ice and handles. That Ascot officials permit fans to stroll the grounds toting bottles and ice cubes was culture-shock. Stateside, during Eagles’ games at the Linc, concession workers dutifully confiscate caps from plastic water bottles as if they were tiny hand grenades.

Tuesday is opening day at Ascot and there’s a fantastic promotion you might like. Get 10X XB Reward Points for your wagers when you play with Xpressbet and 1/ST BET over five days and 35 Ascot races, including 18 graded stakes. First post is 9:30 a.m. ET daily.

Opening day Tuesday, Ward will saddle two of nine planned Ascot starters—#17 Kaufymaker (5-2 odds) in the Group 2 Coventry (Second Race), for 2-year-olds at six furlongs, and #6 Maven (12-1) in the Group 1 King’s Stand (Third Race), for 3-year-olds and upward at five furlongs. US-based Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez will ride both and all but two of Ward’s overall Ascot invaders. Dettori, also one of the world’s best, will ride the others.

Gosden and Dettori figure to enjoy to a sterling start, Tuesday, in the Group 1, $548k Queen Anne at one mile with 2-5 favorite Palace Pier. He’s a 4-year-old colt with seven wins in eight starts and over $1 million in earnings. The afternoon’s fourth race, the $479,500, Group 1 Saint James’s Palace at one mile, is a wide-open wagering event topped by 4-1 favorite Poetic Flare, winner of four of seven lifetime. In that race, we plan to have a few quid on #4 Highland Avenue, a Godolphin runner trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick. The Dubawi colt never has been worse than second in five starts with three wins.

As you can tell, we’re way more interested in Ascot these days, so stop back in this space daily for Ascot racing previews, recaps, and tales of wagering woes. As always, Race On!

                    # 2 LOUIE P 9/5
                    # 5 REND LAKE BABY 12/1
                    # 4 TAP'S LULLABY 3/1
I give my vote to LOUIE P here. She should definitely be given a chance given the competitive speed figs. Always good to invest in a trainer with this kind of strong win percentage - 15 percent - at this distance & surface. Posted a formidable speed figure last time out. REND LAKE BABY - This horse has to be in form coming back to the track so quickly. Overall the Equibase speed figs of this equine look respectable in this race. TAP'S LULLABY - Randazzo is serious with this one, wheeling her back soon. The speed rating of 66 from her latest affair looks strong in here.

                      Parx Racing - Race #1 - Post: 12:55pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $20,000 Class Rating: 74

                      Rating:

                      #2 THEDUKE OF HAZZARD (ML=5/2)
                      #3 RULES (ML=8/1)

THEDUKE OF HAZZARD - Don't often see a lucrative ROI like +437. This jock/trainer duet has done well together over the last 12 months. This gelding usually does his best running late. Look for him way back early in the race and finishing best of all on the tiring speed horses. This gelding is in good condition. Finished third on June 2nd. RULES - I have to like this gelding's chances at the shorter distance. When Milan and Mercedes join forces on horses the ROI has been terrific at +276. The May 25th race at Parx Racing was at a class level of (80). Dropping down in class ranks considerably, so he should be in a good spot to win.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #5 I SAW IT ALL (ML=9/5), #1 JOINT AND SEVERAL (ML=2/1), #4 UNCLE MANNY (ML=5/1),

I SAW IT ALL - Difficult to put any dough on this horse on the top end. Likes to land in the money though. JOINT AND SEVERAL - This gelding recorded a speed rating in his last race which probably isn't good enough today. UNCLE MANNY - No good fortune for this steed in a sprint event over the last two months tells me that this gelding is in a formidable situation The speed figure last time out doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the class rating of today's contest. Mark this animal as a questionable challenger.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #2 THEDUKE OF HAZZARD on the win end if we get at least 7/5 odds

                        Arizona Downs - Race #5 - Post: 4:22pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,000 Class Rating: 91

                        Rating:

                        #5 AVALON KING (ML=6/1)

AVALON KING - Lone speed horses can be tough to run down. Here's a lone speed freak facing sluggish sorts today. I think that today's shorter trip should help this gelding. For my money, a bullet workout is the best indicator of readiness there is. Look at that last one - 59.8. Very impressive.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 BLOW MY MIND (ML=5/2), #4 MIDNIGHT IN MAUI (ML=3/1), #1 CATS BLAME (ML=7/2),

BLOW MY MIND - This horse hasn't been hitting the board in either of his last couple of races. The Brain tells me to keep my distance from horses in short distance events that haven't finished in the money in sprint contests recently. MIDNIGHT IN MAUI - A stretch-runner like this one needs an early battle to set things up and he isn't likely to get one in this one. Unlikely that the speed figure he notched on Apr 21st will be good enough in this contest. CATS BLAME - This horse hasn't shown too much in the last two races. Tough to wager on this runner running out of the one hole. His past performances show that he doesn't run well out of there.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #5 AVALON KING on top if we're getting at least 1/1 odds

                          # 5 THE TABULATOR 5/2
                          # 3 WOODLAND WALK 5/1
                          # 4 OVER ICCE 6/1
THE TABULATOR is my choice. His 95 average has this horse with among the most competitive speed figs for this event. Loveberry has an excellent ROI over the past 30 days (+40) which should probably help gamblers with this selection. Must be given a chance based on the solid Equibase Speed Fig posted in the last race. WOODLAND WALK - Formidable average Equibase Speed Figures in dirt sprint races make this pony a solid choice. Has been running soundly lately and will probably be up on the front end early on. OVER ICCE - He has a good opportunity for this event as trainer, Johnson, has strong win rate with horses going this distance. This conditioner has the best return on investment in this group with entries racing at this distance and surface.
