Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    May 24, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
The feature at Yonkers Raceway goes in Race 7, an Open Handicap Pace with a $37,000 purse. That race also begins the $1.00 Late Pick 4 sequence and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 7

3-Speed Man N (20-1)-Using in an interesting race, and really hasn't had a chance in both recent starts at this class. Now draws inside, usual pilot is back and has 5 wins in 17 Yonkers races. If there is an honest pace Zeron could work a trip and be in striking range.
5-Moonshine Kisses (9/2)-Lost by a head in a quick mile at this class and has been consistently in the hunt. Bartlett might be able to work a smoother journey than last week. That could lead to a picture and does have 6 wins in 17 starts here.
7-Raukapuka Ruler N (9-1)-Beat Open company, then drew the 8 and 7 posts at this level and raced from the back. Maybe it's time to expend some energy and Stratton will leave to get a close-up seat. Has the gate speed and the price should be right.

    Race 8

3-Shadow Cat (7/2)-Has climbed up the class ladder and accumulated 5 wins since joining the Fanning barn on 2-22. Had one try at this level and it came from the 8 hole but could seal the deal tonight. Might get on the engine and not look back.
6-Twin B Tuffenuff (9/2)-Gets some class relief and fits better with this crew. Last couple have been dull but if 100%, Brennan could be aggressive. Not sure if this Burke entry has enough gate speed to land on top, but should be in the hunt with a good start.

    Race 9

1-Bettor Memories (3-1)-Drops to a better level and likes to race near the top of the stack, so this post draw works well. Has missed a start but will bank on Burke having his trainee dialed on high this evening.
4-Mighty Santana N (5-1)-Tossing last from post 7 and was off for 2 weeks. This 8-year-old fits here and is often in the hunt especially when leaving from an inside post. Buter should be able to work a trip and be forwardly placed.
5-Levine (5/2)-This 4-year-old will be tested versus some seasoned veterans and not loving the morning line price. But will use because Zeron might be able to leave fast enough to land in the pocket or on top. If that script plays out chances for success go up considerably.

    Race 10

2-San Domino A (7/2)-Returns to Yonkers and is in a good spot to pick up an overdue win. Has the gate speed to race on the point. Likes the track, has 8 wins in 28 starts and this is the 4th race since returning to the Harris barn.
3-Pyro (3-1)-Here is another who should fit well, was facing Open company, and also has big gate speed. It should be an interesting start and my play is to use these two and shoot against #1 who has been idle since 5-3.

    $1 Late Pick 4

    3,5,7/3,6/1,4,5/2,3
    Total Bet=$36

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Parx Racing - Race #4
#2 Lease He has some back efforts that stack up well enough here, and he's probably a better fit at this level locally than he was down in Florida.
#4 One Slick Start The pedigree is versatile enough to think this guy can handle the new footing, but he'll also be asked to travel two turns for the first time. He's tough on form, but there are some questions at what is probably an underlaid price.
#3 One Two Kid He took a big step forward when routing for the first time, and there is plenty of green in the pedigree. His stablemate One Slick Start will get more action, but this guy is interesting, too.
Race Summary Lease heads north for this one, and he has some decent back turf tries that would probably keep him in the mix off a dull first go with winners last out.
      Parx Racing - Race #8
#10 Sambam He's bred to be better on the grass than he showed in that only turf start, and he has been fairly competitive with this kind in recent starts. Maybe he takes a small step forward on the turf to land this?
#4 Real Factor He owns form that would make him tough with these, but I don't fully trust him even while dropping in class for this one. Would be entirely unappealing at anything like the 8/5 ML price with and 0-for-13 turf slate staring back.
#7 Mt Suribachi His only two turf tries were both pretty good, so the surface switch gives him plenty of room to bounce back off a couple of dull runs to close out his 2020 campaign. Layoff chance.
Race Summary Sambam is in decent enough form to give him a look while moving back to the grass, a surface he has not tried since joining the new barn.
      Parx Racing - Race #9
#6 Always a Queen Tactical type meets a couple of players who are more committed to the front end, and she should be able to settle off the splits and finish here.
#5 Irrepressible Not really sure how much stock to put in that last one. It was a front-end romp in the mud, and those races are always suspect, but it was also her first true two-turn start and first try with blinkers. It might have been legit.
#2 Cousin Basil Forward player has a very mild pressing gear, but she also tends to give away a little bit of ground late in most of her starts. Logical on paper, but she'll need a couple things to work in her favor.
Race Summary Always a Queen can be tough from close range, as she has some reliable finishing ability and gets what should be a favorable race flow with a couple of quicker players drawn inside.

        #4
        Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

Will Rogers Downs - Race #3
#4 Ryder Rocket Made a strong move for an easy win last out and has taken two of her last three; her only loss in that period came two back when he lost a photo. Clearly enjoys the venue.
#6 True Saint Was a solid second last out and can improve in his second over the strip
#2 Daaher's Success Goes for his third straight win, including an impressive win over upper claimers here; capable of being an important factor if he runs back to his latest.
Race Summary Ryder Rocket is a matter of inches away from three straight wins and will be the one to hold off.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #5
#6 Gotta See Red Romped here in her first since November and has too much for these; quality filly can get another stakes win on her resume'.
#2 Twilight Curfew Was a non-threatening third in an allowance sprint in her first over the strip and is a legit threat at this distance.
#1 Canada Candy Has won three of her last four, including a hard-fought allowance here last out. Will press from the inside.
Race Summary Gotta See Red has the class and should be able to cruise in this two-turn event.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #9
#7 Denver City After a loss in his career debut last March, he's won three straight races and has had little trouble getting to the lead. Got a late start in his career (as a 4-year-old) but has made up for lost time.
#9 Free Dream Was up in time in a N2L claiming race last out and can be along for a piece of this; hasn't been the luckiest runner but he runs well over this track and could surprise.
#1 Onomatopoeia Held on for second last out and has the speed to be in the mix from the start.
Race Summary Denver City has been a dominant sprinter as he's been well placed by trainer Kenny Nolan and can get another win here.

              #7
Handicapped by The Turf Club Analysts

              Mountaineer Park - Race #5 - Post: 8:40pm - Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $6,800 Class Rating: 73

              Rating:

              #1 OVERKOTER (ML=6/1)
              #6 BUTTON BOX (ML=5/1)

OVERKOTER - This horse ran off the board at Mountaineer Park last time around the track on a sloppy track. He should improve right here on a fast track. BUTTON BOX - Shipped in on May 2nd to take the top prize here. Take right back again. This rider/trainer duo has been producing a very profitable ROI, right at +33. This gelding's last speed rating is high enough to prove victorious here, I'll bet on him right back in today's event. This gelding is in good form. Finished first on May 2nd.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #3 COURAGEOUS CRAFT (ML=3/1), #2 GONE PARADISE (ML=4/1), #4 IRON DRILL (ML=9/2),

COURAGEOUS CRAFT - Doesn't seem inspiring to me after the lack of any kind of closing ability on April 3rd. The Brain always warns me to keep away from ponies in sprint events that haven't finished in the money in sprint races recently. Improbable that the speed rating he notched on April 3rd will hold up in this race. GONE PARADISE - Most recent speed fig of 59 may not be legitimate since it was in the slop. Pace is so critical, and this speedy one is going to have an early speed duel on his hands. Hard to wager on this horse out of the October 20th clash. Only faced maidens in that one. Finished first in his most recent race with a substandard speed figure. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this field. IRON DRILL - Difficult to keep stabbing at this sort of 'bridesmaid' horse.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - BUTTON BOX - With speed figures of 71 and 81, this horse is showing much improvement.

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 5 DAY PASS 8/5
                # 2 STONERIDGE AMBER 10/1
                # 9 NO TAN LINES 8/1
DAY PASS looks competitive to best this field. Is a very strong contender based on figs recorded recently under today's conditions. With a reliable jockey who has won at a quite good 22 percent rate over the last month. This has to be one of the top selections. Ran a sharp last race. STONERIDGE AMBER - Has strong Equibase Class Figures relative to this field - worth a look. NO TAN LINES - Is tough not to consider based on speed figures which have been strong - 52 avg - of late. She looks quite good in this spot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the halfway point.

                  # 1 XTRAFINE XTINA 5/1
                  # 6 JUST CLASSY 7/2
HOLD THAT SMILE is the strongest wager in this race. Always good to invest in a conditioner with this kind of very strong win percentage - 23 percent - at this distance & surface. She looks formidable in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the halfway point. The odds could be right on this one. XTRAFINE XTINA - Looks formidable to be up on the front end at the first call. May best this group of animals here, showing strong figs of late. JUST CLASSY - Always good to invest in a conditioner with this kind of very strong win percentage - 16 percent - at this distance & surface. Is a key contender - given the 77 speed rating from her most recent race.

                    #8 MY SUGAR TOWN (ML=3/1)

MY SUGAR TOWN - Has happened upon a good spot this time out.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 SUMMER TUNE (ML=7/5), #4 ACTIFDASH (ML=6/1), #5 PEEKER CINCO (ML=6/1),

SUMMER TUNE - Improbable that the speed fig he recorded on May 5th will be enough in this race. ACTIFDASH - Would have to advance off that fifth place finish last time out to make an impact here. PEEKER CINCO - Would have to get better off that eighth place finish last time to make an impact here. Finished eighth in his most recent race with a substandard speed figure. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this field.
