Weekly Bankroll Builder: August 28 Stronach 5 Play

We welcome back Golden Gate Fields in this week’s Stronach 5, which once again has a 100k guarantee, and a prospective pool that should far surpass that. To refresh, the Stronach 5 is a Pk5 wager spread across as many as four tracks and up to three surfaces (dirt, Tapeta and turf), inside of 90 minutes, with a $1 minimum and ridiculously low 12% takeout. I’ll be putting together some prospective tickets in this space each week for a wager that is undoubtedly as good as it gets for the bettors.

*** Please take note that this analysis is done upwards of 48 hours in advance, so obviously weather, track conditions and especially late scratches can and will have an effect. Please check back around 4pm Friday for an update. ***

Leg 1: Laurel Park R7 (3:56 ET) – 3up 40k MCL at 7 furlongs

I never like to say a horse has to win, but #7 THE CAIRO KID (8-5) has to win the opening leg on the MSW drop, as not only are his last two dirt races a month better than anyone here, but said anyone here doesn’t come close to stacking up to his form, so I’ll take the bait and single a horse that looks about 4-5 when the dust settles.

Pk5 A horses: 7 (listed in order of preference)

Should ‘Kid falter then maybe #5 MORE TWIRL (10-1) has an upset chance, as he adds Lasix, has run just twice, and once on dirt, and gets off the rail in his dirt debut, when the rider lost the whip too. The MSW drop should also help #6 STASH MY MONEY (9-2), and his stalking style will too, but at 15-0-2-4 he’s very dicey, and came up empty at Parx, and Lake is 0-for-10 here, so tread lightly. Going second-off the layoff could help #3 BARRISTER (8-1), and is best puts him on the line with ‘Kid, but he’s been dreadful in his last two, so he’s impossible to trust and it’s implausible to think he finds that form again either.

Pk5 B horses: 5,6,3

Potential B add-ins: #2 Royal Thunder (4-1), #4 Maybe Someday (10-1)


Leg 2: Gulfstream Park R9 (4:14 ET) – 2f 35k MCL at 1-mile (turf)

A tough race, as there’s little in terms of proven turf form, but firsters #4 VIBURNUM (5-1) and #2 SAMURAI FIGHTER (9-2) both drew well, have a slew of works for solid connections, and sure don’t meet much, so they have to be used in some form. Experienced runners #5 BLUE PAYNT (3-1) and #7 BEACH CHICK (6-1) have an edge because of their runs, and the former has been 3rd twice and the latter drops from the MSW ranks, so I’ll toss them in too.

Pk5 A horses: 4,2,5,7

I can’t use #9 ZAP MAMA (7-2) on the top line off that horrific debut, plus this post is brutal, so I respect her on the drop for Maker, but there’s no way I can put her on the main ticket from out here off that unveiling.

Pk5 B horses: 9

Potential B add-ins: #6 Gulf Coast Gal (4-1)


Leg 3: Laurel Park R8 (4:32 ET) – 3up Maryland-bred N1X* at 1-mile (turf)

What do you do with the speedy # 10 DUNDALK (5-2), who wins this by 7 if he’s right, but hasn’t been seen since 6/19 and drew worst of all? The awesome works on display say you have to use him, and the fact he’s not entered for a tag off the long break bodes well too, but I’m not sure I can stand alone with him, especially since he meets a lot of other speed, and is off a trainer change (though new conditioner Dilodovio is every bit as good as O’Connell). So, with that being said, I’ll use a few others, as #2 CANNON’S ROAR (4-1) drew perfectly, enters off an open N1X win over the course, and has a stalking gear that should enable him to trip out beautifully off all the speed, while #5 BROKER’S REWARD (6-1) goes for Trombetta, who I have a lot of respect for and is 13% off this extended layoff, and this one shows some big works, shows turf races from last year that fit with everyone but Dundalk, can stalk all the speed, and note McCarthy is 28% when he rides for the barn.

Pk5 A horses: 10,2,5

I contemplated singling Dundalk before thinking otherwise, so I won’t be using any other backups with now a trio lined up on the top line.

Pk5 B horses: NONE

Potential B add-ins: #6 Seville Barber (9-2), #7 Start With Yes (6-1)


Leg 4: Laurel Park R9 (5:07 ET) – 3upfm 25k MCL at 1-mile (turf)

I don’t like the fact #4 ESTHER’S FORTUNE (5-1) blew a 3 ½-length late lead but it was her turf bow, and she’s run just twice, so off that, with a good post and a ton of upside, she looks primed for a big run. Getting back to the turf and dropping in class will help #9 PERFECT KIND (7-2), but the losses are adding up and she seems to find one or two better, so tread lightly if you’re keying her.

Pk5 A horses: 4,9

Both #6 R V TREASURE (4-1) and #12 RAZOR GIRL (4-1) have their merits and need to be used, but the former has seen her form stagnate, and the latter is marooned out wide, so I’ll relegate them to the second tier.

Pk5 B horses: 6,12

Potential B add-ins: #11 You’re Doing Fine (10-1), #10 Pearlyville (10-1)


Leg 5: Golden Gate Fields R2 (5:20 ET) – 3upfm 20k MCL at 1-mile (turf)

The finale looks like the ole ‘Use one or use them all,” and I certainly can’t do the latter, so I’ll do the former and go with #5 LEMON DROP TINI (5-2), who simply looks better than a muddled group, drops in class off a Dmr MSW, and wins this with ease off any of her previous four runs while facing tons better.

Pk5 A horses: 5

I have no clue why #7 SURFACE (2-1) is the ML favorite but she could win if the pick stubs her toe, but the local MSW run was awful and she may be regressing from her Ca. form, while both #3 KAYDA (10-1) and #2 HEATSKY (8-1) drew well and have some solid turf form, so they are worth inclusion on a backup ticket.

Pk5 B horses: 7,3,2

Potential B add-ins: #1 Foggy Bottom (9-2)

Tonight, Hoosier Park has a 14-race card set to go which will feature Indiana Sires Stakes action. The 0.50 Pick 5 starts in Race 10, the sequence will have a $10,000 guaranteed pool and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 10

5-Captain Zamperini (3-1)-Winner of only 3 in the last 41 but one victory came on 8/21 in a condition-claiming event. Since being claimed by the Ode barn, has faced better and gone faster than in recent starts. Moves up but will string along with connections.
6-The Candyman Can (2-1)-Burke trainee is only 2 for 16 lifetime but takes a good drop tonight. Raced the last half in .54 last time but was too far back versus a solid field. Should like the company and best to respect.

Race 11

2-PBR Street Gang (4-1)-Broke in last start in the Fox Stakes from the 2nd tier but that was the 1st miscue since on 6/29 in a qualifier. Tetrick was not in the bike in last, he returns and knows well. Looking for a rebound at a square price.
8-JK Going West (7/2)-This 2-year-old has had 5 starts with 4 second place finishes and has been driven fairly conservatively. Maybe it's time to get more aggressive and previous winners are not in this field.
9-Madelines BLK Jack (3-1)-Lost for 1st time in 3 starts on 8/4 to Virgo the program chalk in the next leg who won by 5 lengths. In that race was use hard for the lead and now has been off for over 3 weeks. The rest may help and doesn't need to get on the engine to win.

Race 12

3-Virgo (5/2)-Dominated in the Fox Stakes and is shooting for 3rd straight picture and Tetrick sticks. Likes to sizzle the back half and could find some live cover to do the same this time.
5-What's Your Beef (7/2)-Has been off since 8/4 but did qualify well at ScD on 8/18 and now tries Lasix for the 1st time. Brown trainee is a perfect 4 for 4 but may need this start. Hoping will be ready for a big try and will use in case #3 doesn't have his fastball.

Race 13

2-Rockinbeach (7/2)-Has begun slowly in last 5 starts but now draws back inside and regular pilot returns. Likes the track, winning 10 of 44 at HoP.
5-Ballerat Boomergang (4-1)-This is the 4th start for the Simmons barn and they have won their share. Stayed inside at this class last week starting from the rail but did pace the last half in 54.2. Bates may look to roll off cover and sweep by late for 1st win of 2020.
7-Sawyer's Desire (9/5)-Might have been a single if drew better but not sure if a picture is happening coming off cover. This colt is facing older foes and may not land on the top without a struggle, so will use and look to others for more value.

Race 14

Looking for a fair price in a race where #1 the 5/2 choice is 0-16 this year. The program chalk has faded down the lane in all 9 starts since returning to action. Plus, the last start was at this same level, so will look to beat.
4-Shadyjake (9/2)-Jake drops to a comfortable spot and should be more forwardly placed than in recent starts. Tetrick should have in striking range at the top of the lane. Has won 9 of 63 at HoP and looks to offer a square price.
6-Dont Say Goodby (6-1)-12-year-old drops to a spot to shine and could add some pop to the Pick 5 payout. Miller should be able to put in play in a race without a standout.

#3 Timeless Journey
Price player had a nightmare trip in her MCL win yet won for fun, and while this is a significant rise in class, it's a great sign to see she's not in for a tag; upset special.


#5 Hurricane Breeze
Stretch runner was just 4th to a few of these but she was close, and there's plenty of speed here, plus the course should have some give to it; will be rolling in the lane.


#7 Come Storming
Pace presser did well to draw outside the speed and horse to beat (#4), and that close 3rd behind her, and over the 5, last time makes her a big threat here; big chance.


Race Summary
The price will be right on the 3 and her run last time clearly hints that she has talent, so give her a look in all the slots, and especially to early Pk5, and to kick off the early Pk4 as well, since she's in a spot where the three favorites aren't overwhelming, and are closely grouped too, which means if this miss can move forward she'll have a chance to upset them, and add a ton of value to both sequences in the process as well. If on dirt: 3-4-5


Saratoga - Race #4

#6 Majestic West
Dangerous CD invader was just a good 3rd at this level, against what was a better group too, and this outside attack post is perfect for his style; look out.


#2 Stage Left
Logical sort will like the drop out of the N1X ranks, and the run two-back was strong, though there's no value here and he drew a tricky post; second-best.


#1 Cobble Hill
Class riser was a fast 2nd off the Rodriguez claim last time, with a number that works here, but this post, and rise in class, won't make it easy; tread lightly.


Race Summary
That 9-2 ML on the pick would be a heck of a lot of value in a six-horse field, but even 3-1 seems fair based on his credentials and post, so play him aggressively to win and place, while getting some added value by keying him in the early Pk5/Pk4 as well, since he looks to be getting all the best of it here, over a field of locals that look a bit ho-hum.


Saratoga - Race #7

#3 Matta
Lightly raced talker was a good 2nd to a rousing winner at Lrl last time, in fast time too, lures Irad, has a ton of upside, and can sit off what looks like a hot early pace; call in a scramble.


#4 Honey Won't
Versatile sort got up going 7Fs last time and now cuts back, is another who will like all the pace, and note that win came over a course with some give to it, like he'll get here; do not ignore.


#9 Rocket Heat
The wildcard wins this with his best, as he a stakes caliber runner, but he hasn't been out since Dec. and is now with Cannizzo, so he could need this off the extended break; mixed signals.


Race Summary
That 10-1 ML offers plenty of risk-reward to see if the 3 can play on the big stage, and with Irad named there's some clear intent here, so give him a look in all the slots, and especially in the late Pk5/Pk4 as well, since this is a very deep race, and if you can get a 7-1 or so home, you're going to be adding plenty of value to both sequences.

Owns a couple of nice sprint efforts already, and the pedigree is versatile enough to think the move around two turns isn't going to cause him too much trouble.


#4 Patriot Game
Can't ignore a runner like this, but he's probably going to be overbet compared to his realistic chances of winning this based on the barn.


Race Summary
My Boy Paddy outran his 81-1 price in the debut on turf, and he can probably produce a better effort than that as he gets back to the grass with some experience under his belt.

Brings a big turf pedigree to this one with versatile sire Speightstown on top of a Dynaformer mare, and she may be able to outrun her price today.

Barn does good work with these types, but not sure what to make of the spotty, spaced worktab in advance of the debut run.


#9 Superhelpful
Finished with some enthusiasm in the turf debut going short at Keeneland, and she may be able to work out a tactical kind of trip while going long today.


Race Summary
Line Dancing debuts with a pedigree tilted to this kind of trip, and a couple of name barns might command the action in this spot, leaving this filly at a playable number out of the box.

Showed some ability in that turf sprint a few starts back, and he proved a good fit with this kind of company in that last run. Chance at a price.

No doubt he's the one to beat, but this is also the day to try and beat him. He's returning off a nearly 15-month break and meets some other speed that may not make for a hospitable trip off the layoff.


#1 Seville Row
Class riser has been moving in the right direction, and another step forward would put him in range of landing a piece of this at a big number.


Race Summary
Start With Yes can get first jump while tracking a couple of pace players, and the price should be playable enough with a great race shape looming.

Jockey Christian Hiraldo wins 31% with horses shortening from 1-1/8 miles to 7 furlongs at Charles Town like 7-Code Runner. This is a spread race for me in the pick six, going 5-deep, 1-4-5-6-7.

They just introduced Triston McKenzie to the Majors and all he did was strikeout 10 Tigers while giving up just a couple of hits in his debut. He is an exciting prospect. St. Louis has been hanging in there but they ave been playing a lot of ball in a condensed period of time. Their .500 record heading into Thursday has them second in the division but they are missing a number of pitchers that are going to make it hard to compete throughout the season. Daniel Ponce De Leon has not been effective this season and is looking to get back to a full pitch count. With the Indians having the extra advantage of being off on Thursday this does not look like a good spot for the home team.

The Indians are one of the most hapless offensive teams in the league this season. At their peak, they are probably only above average but we just haven’t seen it this season. This is an interesting and important series for both teams. For San Diego they can put some distance between them and the Rox and the home side can reel them in. They are bringing an offense that is second on homers and second in runs scored to Coors Field. Chris Paddack will have to pitch better though. From a good start, he has been erratic. Most concerning of all he has given up eight homers in his last four starts. San Diego has lost three of them. Colorado is looking to get back to when they were hitting and pitching well and winning a lot of ballgames. They had an off day after sweeping at Arizona so they should be in good shape but they are under .500 at home this season. Antonio Senzatela leads the Rockies in wins but he gives up a lot of hard contact. This might not be a great matchup for him. I am worried about Paddack though so I am leaning to the home team.

Paddack has been giving up homers like crazy and Coors is a haven for the long ball. Chris Bassitt is getting the ball to start the series and he has been super steady this season. After a rough start. Houston has played themselves back into the field. Their pitching is still racked with injuries but it is working, just through some unfamiliar faces. I love their lineup even though Alex Bregman is out. They just got Michael Brantley back and they have plenty of offence even though some regulars are not hitting. Lance McCullers Jr is still struggling to get back to the form he showed before he missed a season. As a result, I am leaning Oakland here.

Both of these teams will be fresh for this one, they were both off on Thursday. A little extra freshness is more likely to help the bats than the arms so I am leaning to the over here. The Angels also have all the talent necessary and have just been underachieving, while the Mariners are simply playing at their talent level. Angels starter Andrew Heaney has been having a rough year, but he’s had to face some really tough offenses recently. He’s already pitched against this Mariners team twice this season, and both outings went well. Across the two starts he gave up only eight hits and three earned runs. Current Seattle hitters have a lifetime .157 batting average and .496 OPS against him in 63 at bats. Take Los Angeles here, as it’s only a matter of time before they get things figured out.


Over Under Pick
The over also makes a lot of sense here. With guys like Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, and Anthony Rendon, the Angels couldn’t really ask for too much more starpower in their lineup. Young Mariners starter Nick Margevicius has a 6.10 career ERA through 23 appearances and 15 starts, so I don’t think they’ll have too much trouble hitting him. In his most recent start against the Rangers, Margevicius gave up four earned runs. The Angels scored 12 in their most recent game, and that one only went seven innings since it was part of a doubleheader. The Mariners have scored at least six runs in five of their past six games, so this one should be pretty high scoring.

They’ve been a lot better than anybody expected this season, especially on offense. They’re in the top half of the league in virtually every offensive category, which nobody saw coming. Anderson pitched against this same Arizona team in his last start and absolutely dominated, tossing a complete game shutout. Weaver on the other hand has been mostly terrible this season. The Diamondbacks are lacking pop in their lineup right now, as they rank 26th in the majors in home runs and 24th in OPS. Take San Francisco on the money line.


Over Under Pick
The over also makes a lot of sense in this spot. This Giants offense has been one of the best stories in all of baseball, and they just had an eight-game streak of scoring at least five runs. Guys like Mike Yastrzemski, Wilmer Flores, Evan Longoria, Donovan Solano, and Brandon Belt are all mashing at the moment. Weaver has a 7.77 ERA through six starts, so I think they’ll be able to keep it up here. Anderson was great in his last start but had struggled right before that, giving up nine earned runs over his two previous outings. Both of these teams rank 21st or worse in bullpen ERA, so even if the starters pitch well we should be able to get some runs late.

PAPA TONY - The July 24th affair at Woodbine was at a class level of (86). Dropping to a lower class rank considerably, so he should be in a good spot. I cannot ignore the fact that this gelding is working extremely well. Another way to evaluate class is earnings per start. This horse has the topmost in the bunch. I think he'll be close at the end. RADIO NOWHERE - I have to like this gelding's winning probability at the shorter trip. When a sprinter is back in a race less than 10 days after his last outing, it generally means he's fit. I just may give this one a shot. Should rebound off last race where he did run out of the money, but was within five lengths at the end. NORTHERN SOLUTION - The jockey and handler combination have a lucrative return on investment when they team up. KINLEE'S SONG - When this jock and conditioner join forces you have to take a look. Johnson and Singh have been wonderful together. Horse has improved at least two speed rating points in last two races. I look for that to continue to trend in a positive direction in this event.

VICTOR'S DESTINY - Hard to put your money on the win end of any horse that finishes second and third as regularly as this entrant does. When looking at today's class rating, he will have to garner a better speed rating than last time around the track to compete in this dirt sprint. ICE CHALLENGE - This thoroughbred just hasn't looked fit recently. LILLZ NOT CRYING - This horse will probably need at least one more start after the lackluster showing following the extended vacation. Not likely for this participant to make an impact with no success lately in a short distance affair.

Should be given consideration here on the basis of the figs in the speed section alone. This selection will feel the med change - now going off Lasix today. Is worth careful consideration and may be a bet - strong Equibase speed figs (68 average) at today's distance and surface lately. GOLDEN RULE HAVEN - His chances to score are much better this time around facing this easier lot. Could beat this group given the 64 speed figure earned in his last outing. MY INTEREST - Facing a much easier group than last time out. Has been racing very well and has among the top speed in the race for today's distance.

Under normal track conditions, has a chance in this event. SPANISH EXCHANGE - Have to make this filly a contender; she comes off a good outing on August 6th. Widely used handicapping theory - 3rd or 4th start after a vacation generally leads to a big effort. A live one today.

Let’s take a gamble with this first-time starting juvenile filly in a five furlong turf dash that on paper looks fairly wide open. The daughter of Carpe Diem out of a half-sister to Lucky Pulpit breezed a sizzling quarter mile in 20 4/5 seconds at the OBS April sale preview session while displaying quick action and super speed and should be plenty of fit after a healthy recent series of easy drills for trainer P. Eurton. If she breaks with her field, she can win, so at 6-1 on the morning line let’s use her in the win pool and in all of our rolling exotics.

Freshened since May, Message has been looking quite sharp in morning drills for B. Baffert and should fire a big shot in the five-runner edition of the Tranquility Lake S. for older fillies and mares. Most effective when on or near the lead, the daughter of Warrior’s Reward catches a field without too much speed, so we’re expecting F. Pat to employ front-running tactics and coax her along from there. Her best effort is good enough, so at 7/2 on the morning line she’ll offer value as a win play and a potential rolling exotic single.

Saratoga Analysis and Wagering Strategies:

RACE 1: Post 1:10 ET. Grade: X
Use: 2-Captain Bombastic; 5-Dream Bigger

Forecast: The Friday opener features three-year-olds competing in a 100K New York Stallion S. series race at six and one-half furlongs on the main track in a race that drew just five starters. Captain Bombastic finished a respectable fourth in the H. Allen Jerkens S.-G1 earlier this month and today returns to state-bred company and is listed as the 3/5 morning line favorite. A winner of a similar affair two runs back at Belmont Park, the son of Forty Tales has the proper stalking style for this extended sprint trip and seems likely to produce the last run. Dream Bigger finished third to our top pick in the Mike Lee S. in June and then was out of his element when unplaced in a two-turn turf stakes here earlier this month. He’ll have every chance with a pace-pressing trip outside to turn the tables on ‘Bombastic and must be given a legitimate chance to do so. In a race that we’ll otherwise pass, both should be included in rolling exotic play.

RACE 2: Post 1:44 ET. Grade: B-
Use: 4-Princess Fawzia; 5-Hurricane Breeze

Forecast: This race remains on grass but has been switched from the inner course to the Widener (outer) track. Princess Fawzia has improved with each start and after a couple of brutal beats vs. similar starter’s allowance company should be able to seal the deal today. The lightly-raced daughter of Cairo Prince can win on the lead or as a stalker depending upon the race flow so I. Ortiz, Jr. can play it by ear. Hurricane Breeze, a closing fourth in the same race our top pick exits, may be the one to fear in the final furlong if the pace turns up better than average (it might) and is worth including on your ticket as a back-up or a saver.

RACE 3: Post 2:20 ET. Grade: C+
Use: 4-Rejected Again; 6-Principal Dancer

Forecast: This race has been significantly impacted with the overnight scratching of two main players, Wardenofthenorth and Swordsman, leaving a field of just six. Principal Dancer has a solid runner-up effort over the local main track under these conditions last month while earning a career top speed figure and a repeat of that race today makes him the one to beat. Rejected Again, freshened since March, shows up cheap for G. Gullo, so he may have issues. The son of Tapizar projects to be part of the pace throughout and against this group could stick around long enough to survive. We’ll try to get by using just these two in rolling exotic play

RACE 4: Post 2:54 ET. Grade: B-
Use: 1-Cobble Hill; 2-Stage Left

Forecast: The contention is drawn inside in this starter’s allowance sprint for $50,000 claimers with Stage Left clearly the fastest of the sixpack based strictly on numbers. The W. Ward-trained gelding was in a tad tough when fourth in first-level allowance company earlier this month but a repeat of his sharp, highly-rated score two runs back will be more than good enough to win. The son of Congrats is most effective when on or near the lead throughout and in a field without any blazers he should draft into a comfortable pace-stalking position. Cable Hill is protected in a sign of confidence by R. Rodriguez after being claimed out of a seven length win for $16,000 two runs back and then finishing a strong runner-up on the raise to $35,000 with a career top speed figures when wheeled back last month. If he can avoid trouble from the rail, the late-running sprinter by Verrazano will be heard from in the final furlong.

RACE 5: Post 3:30 ET. Grade: B
Single: 2-Party At Page’s

Forecast: This state-bred maiden juvenile filly sprint has been switched from turf to the main track. Party at Page’s was more than eight lengths clear of the rest when nosed out in her debut over this track and distance last month and a repeat of that effort today should be good enough to land her in the winner’s circle, unless there’s a hot shot first-timer in the field (and we’re not seeing one). The daughter of Gemologist must leave cleanly from the rail but if she does she should be on or near the lead throughout. In the absence of any specific knowledge regarding the first-timers, we’ll settle on this J. Englehart-trained filly as a win play and rolling exotic single.

RACE 6: Post 4:06 ET. Grade: B
Use: 2-Dovima; 6-Back Channel

Forecast: Dovima appears set to graduate after missing in two photo’s in a pair of grass route affairs to begin her career. Today she shortens to a sprint, switches to the main track and shows an impressive bullet workout (5f, 1:00b, fastest 17) over the local main track to indicate she’ll handle the change in surface just fine. The filly that edged her last time, In Front, came back to verify the strength of the race by repeating on the raise vs. first-level allowance competition. Back Channel, in the money in both of her starts, most recently produced an improved speed figure when third in a hot race last month at Belmont Park and should manufacture another forward move after a recent bullet five furlong drill (1:01 3/5, fastest of 14). The L. Rice-trained filly is worth using on a ticket or two, with the main punch going to Dovima.

RACE 7: Post 4:41 ET. Grade: C+
Use: 1-Battle Station; 2-Sayyaaf; 3-Matta; 5-New York’s Finest

Forecast: This is a messy affair requiring a spread in rolling exotic play. We’ll go four deep but if you find the need to use more, go right ahead. Battle Station is a late-running sprinter in a race that has plenty of front-running types and could produce the last run with clear sailing in the lane. He’s a winner of two of three career starts over the Saratoga turf course and his good recent form at Delaware Park and Parx shows he’s doing well and ready for another top effort. To us he looks more dangerous than his morning line of 10-1 gives him credit for. New York’s Finest is a real pro and will take them on the front end for as far as he can. Matta is lightly-raced and improving and produced speed figures at Laurel Park that make him competitive on this circuit. At 10-1 on the morning line, the Tale Charge Indy gelding lands Johnny V. and offers a decent look at a price. Sayyaaf was a beaten choice when facing many of these same faces over this course and distance last month while encountering a rough trip but if he can secure a clean journey from the rail the C. Brown-trained colt may have a good look in a total scramble of a race. He’s likely to have to deal with plenty of early heat and hasn’t always been generous in the final furlong.

Forecast: Irish Front is a promising colt making just his third career start and after crushing a maiden field over this track and distance last month and seems quite capable of repeating on the raise. The son of Summer Front earned a giant speed figure in victory and sports a steady, healthy work tab since for T. Pletcher. He’s 8/5 on the morning line and it would be surprising to see him go a couple of ticks lower. Blindwillie McTell, a recent third in a hot race at this level in his first outing since February, should produce a forward move with that effort behind him and is the one to fear most. A multiple stakes winner in New York bred company, the son of Posse hasn’t quite showcased similar talents in open company but has speed figures that fit and has the proper stalking style for this extended sprint distance. We’ll have tickets including both in our rolling exotics with preference on top to Irish Front.

Forecast: Sweet Melania is listed as the 8/5 morning line favorite and we suspect she’ll go even lower than that in this year’s edition of the Lake George S.-G3 for 3-year-old fillies over a mile on grass. She’s the best filly in the race, is fastest on speed figures, proven over the course, and is the controlling speed in a race that has little of it. The daughter of American Pharoah, fresh from a gate-to-wire win in the Wonder Again S.-G3 in June in her season debut and training steadily in the interim, is a logical short-priced rolling exotic single.

Forecast: This maiden claimer for fillies and mares has been transferred to the main track and will be contested at nine furlongs. Tread lightly. MTO entrant Madam Deputy is a first-off-the-claim play for Rudy and seems sure to improve after finishing a distant but respectable third in her debut at this level in a better than average affair at Belmont Park last month. The daughter of Constitution should enjoy today’s longer trip and really doesn’t have a whole lot to beat. Cainudothetwist, a solid runner-up in her only outing, is another likely to step forward; however, she’s bred more for grass than dirt so we’re just hoping she can run as well on the main track as she did over the Belmont Park lawn in early July. We’ll use both in our rolling exotics but the best advice is to include as many as your budget allows.

Detroit is sending out Matt Boyd for his 7th start of 2020. In the first 6, he's got an atrocious 8.48 ERA and 1.744 WHIP. He's given up 8 homers in 28.7, which is about 2.5 HRs/game. He's facing one of the best power lineups in baseball in the Twins. In Boyd's last 5 starts vs the Twins, he's given up 13 home runs!
Minnesota will counter with Randy Dobnak. He is 5-1 with a 1.78 ERA and 1.022 WHIP in 6 starts. The only reason he's not a big name right now is he doesn't strike guys out. He's got 16 K's in 30 1/3 innings. Media just doesn't give these guys a lot of love. Give me the Twins -149!

Tyler Anderson was dominant in his last start throwing a nine inning shutout with an 83 game score. His success should continue here against the light hitting Diamondbacks.

The San Francisco Giants' seven-game winning streak ended with a thud on Thursday, as the hated-Dodgers swept the host Giants in a doubleheader (7-0 & 2-0) that took place because both teams agreed not to play Wednesday. The 15-18 Giants begin a five-game road trip Friday night in Arizona, the first of three vs the slumping D'backs. Arizona was 13-11 after winning SIX in a row from Aug 12-18 but welcomes the Giants to Chase Field having lost EIGHT straight games to fall to 13-19. The D'backs haven't played since Wednesday, as Colorado and Arizona did not play Thursday due to protest
Friday's pitching matchup is a 're-hook' from last Friday, when Tyler Anderson (1-1, 3.45 ERA) and the Giants beat the D'backs 5-1, who started Zac Gallen (0-0, 2.25 ERA). Anderson began his career with the Rockies in 2016 and over his first two seasons, went 11-12 with a 4.09 ERA over 34 starts. He made 32 starts in 2018, going 7-9 with a 4.55 ERA. He began the 2019 season in the Rockies rotation but was quickly placed on the DL due to knee inflammation. He came off the DL a week later and made five starts before being demoted to AAA. He underwent major season-ending surgery to correct a chondral defect on June 11 of 2019 in his left knee, which was expected to require a lengthy recovery time. He made just five starts in all of 2019, going 0-3 with an 11.76 ERA. Anderson was claimed off waivers by the San Francisco Giants on Dec 2. His 5-1 victory over the D'backs last Friday was the first complete game of his career!
You may have noted above that Zac Gallen has yet to have a decision in 2020 (win or loss), despite making six starts. However, Arizona is 4-2 in his starts, as he not only owns a 2.25 ERA but his WHIP is 1.06 (42-12 KW ratio) and his BAA is .202. Gallen pitched six strong innings last Friday against the Giants, allowing just three hits and one ER but again, settled for a no-decision. However, here's the rub. Gallen can set a major league record by allowing three or fewer ERs in his first 22 major league starts with another excellent outing here (note: He currently shares the record with former Boston Red Sox pitcher Aaron Sele).
Isn't Gallen long OVERDUE to pick up a "W?" Why not here vs Tyler Anderson?. After all, before pitching his first career complete game last Friday vs Arizona, Anderson had gone just 1-14 in his previous 20 starts (teams were 4-16). I'm with Gallen in this one. You in?

Ace Zac Gallen is proving to be everything the Diamondbacks had hoped for and more when they traded with Miami for him. He has posted a 2.25 ERA and 1.056 WHIP in six starts this season with 42 K’s in 36 innings. Gallen allowed only one run in six innings on August 22nd against the Giants in his only career start against them.
Tyler Anderson is 0-1 with a 5.94 ERA and 1.620 WHIP in four road starts for the Giants this season. Anderson is 2-1 with a 5.95 ERA and 1.536 WHIP in eight career starts against the Diamondbacks. Arizona is favored heavily for good reason here due to its huge advantage on the mound. Bet the Diamondbacks Friday.

My free play for tonight has to be the Philadelphia Phillies in their National League East battle with the first-place Atlanta Braves.

This is a great spot for the third-place Phils, who are aiming for their fourth straight win and can get their behind right-hander Zack Wheeler. Talk about the motivation for this team tonight, and the wherewithal to inch closer to the top of the division.

Wheeler has been the brightest spot of Philadelphia's rotation this season, and brings a 3-0 record and 2.76 ERA in five starts to the hill with him. Even further, the right-hander is 6-1 in 11 career starts at Citizens Bank Park, with a 3.10 ERA.

The Braves give a nod to left-hander Robbie Erlin, who allowed three home runs over just 43 pitches during an appearance out of the bullpen against this exact same lineup on Aug. 10. Saturday he faced them again, and Bryce Harper took him deep.

In his two appearances against the Phils this season Erlin has an 8.09 ERA after giving up six earned runs on six hits and two walks over 6.2 innings.

Again, great spot here for the Phils. Lay the money and list both pitchers.

My free play for Friday is on the Boston Red Sox plus a big price against the suddenly struggling Washington Nationals, who have lost three straight and are in Beantown for the weekend.

What's funny about these two teams is only one win separates them during a pair of disappointing seasons. Boston has 10 wins, the Nationals have 11.

And while I know the Nationals are handing the ball to Max Scherzer, lest we forget he just turned in a rather sketchy performance on Saturday, when he was tagged for four runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings. He took the no-decision against Miami, but I don't like what I've seen on the whole.

Scherzer opened the season by allowing four earned runs to the Yankees, then looked good in three straight against Toronto, and the Mets back-to-back. But in his last two starts, at Baltimore and vs. Miami, he has allowed nine earned runs in 11.2 innings and given up four home runs.

His ERA against A.L. East foes this season is 4.11. And when you look at what he's done against Boston in 11 lifetime starts, it gets worse. Scherzer is 4-5 with a 5.90 ERA against the Red Sox.

Considering all of that, I think we're looking at an inflated number and will take a shot with the home pup.

I'm going to lay the points with the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA tonight, as the league opens action after taking a stand against social injustice the last two nights.

The Mercury just snapped a three-game losing streak with a one-point win against these same Washington Mystics on Sunday. And with Phoenix trying to chase a first-round playoff bye - something I don't think will happen - it has to start playing the same type of basketball it opened the wubble with.

Phoenix has had one game and several days to adjust to the absence of star center Brittney Griner, who missed last Friday’s game for personal reasons, and then left the bubble.

The Mercury still have the league's all-time GOAT Diana Taurasi to lead the offense, plus sophomores Brianna Turner and Alanna Smith stepping up to control the boards and protect the paint with Griner gone.

The defending champion Mystics just endured a brutal eight-game losing streak, and just don't have the same punch they did last season. Of course, they're missing Elena Delle Donne, who opted not to enter the wubble, and Kristi Toliver is no longer with the team. Washington doesn't look anything like the team that dominated play last season.

Lay the points here, as Phoenix will come out of this two-game hiatus feeling a bit more united and ready to make a run to the postseason.

Wacha is making his first start in three weeks after a trip to the injured list with shoulder inflammation. The Yankees’ lineup is largely unfamiliar with him; only Aaron Judge and Brett Gardner have ever faced Wacha, with five at-bats between the two of them. Wacha’s first three starts as a Met haven’t been pretty: he’s allowed 10 runs in the 14 innings he’s pitched. The Yankees start Jordan Montgomery, looking to complete his first full MLB season since 2017. Montgomery has won two of four starts, and impressed against the Mets in a preseason exhibition last month. The Mets just barely avoided a sweep to the Marlins: after not scoring in Tuesday’s doubleheader, they blew a three-run lead for Jacob DeGrom before finally winning in their last at-bat on Wednesday. The Yankees haven’t had to sweat as much for most of their wins, so go with the team from the Bronx.


Over Under Pick
The Mets’ lineup is deep from top to bottom, and should put pressure on Montgomery, but they’re the worst team in the Major Leagues with runners in scoring position. If the Mets hit even the league average in clutch situations, they’d be first in the league in runs scored, and most likely in wins. But they haven’t been able to do that in 2020, and have always had trouble scoring runs against their crosstown rivals, no matter who was pitching. With a veteran pitcher like Wacha on the mound for the Mets, take the under.

Left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu has enjoyed his transition to the American League after finishing as last year’s runner-up for the National League Cy Young Award with the Dodgers. Ryu has allowed no more than one run in each of his past four starts, one of which was a six-inning effort against the Orioles last week. Ryu has yet to throw 100 pitches in a start, but that shouldn’t be an issue as the Blue Jays’ bullpen has been one of the best in the Major Leagues. The Orioles plan to start John Means, who has struggled mightily in 2020 after an outstanding rookie season last year. Means has yet to complete five innings in any of his four starts, and has allowed four home runs in just 10 2/3 innings on the season. He hasn’t faced Toronto yet this year and won his only start against the Jays last season. Without confidence, though, pitching in the major leagues is a tall task, and even more so against a young and energetic lineup like the Blue Jays with a veteran control pitcher on the mound. Take Toronto on the run line.


Over Under Pick
In the three weeks that it’s hosted Major League games, Sahlen Field has been a favorite ballpark of big-league hitters, with the left and right field foul poles both at just 325 feet. Ryu should be depended on for a quality start, but if a home run threat like Anthony Santander gets up with a man on base, what might otherwise be a fly ball could lead to a couple runs. Toronto’s lineup should put an onslaught on Means and the inconsistent Orioles’ bullpen, so take the over.

Zack Wheeler is loving the great start he’s off to in 2020, not just because he’s helped the Phillies win games, but because he’s proving his former general manager wrong. Mets GM Brodie van Wagenen chose not to resign the right-hander this offseason, claiming he wasn’t worth the amount the Phillies offered him. Wheeler is 3-0 with a 2.76 ERA in his five starts, averaging more than six and a half innings per outing. His last start was also against the Braves, and he gave up just two runs in seven innings, striking out a career-high eight. The Phillies have won three in a row and will face lefty Robbie Erlin, against whom Wheeler also matched up last Saturday. Erlin has yet to advance past the fourth inning this season, and despite not facing them many times, has allowed home runs to Bryce Harper, J.T. Realmuto and Jean Segura. The Phillies’ bullpen is the least reliable part of their team, and they can take any lead and make it dangerously close, so avoid the run line and take Philadelphia on the money line.


Over Under Pick
These two pitchers faced off six days ago and the teams combined to score eleven runs in that game, mostly due to the Phillies’ bullpen woes (surprise!). Harper has three hits and three RBIs in five at-bats against Erlin, and Wheeler hasn’t exactly had it easy against the big bats in the Braves’ lineup. Freddie Freeman has eight hits in 18 career at-bats, and Ronald Acuna has homered twice. The Phillies will look to score early, the Braves should counter late, so take the over.

A day after the Nationals game was postponed with Philadelphia, they will travel to Fenway Park to take on the Red Sox. Both the Nationals and the Red Sox have gotten off to poor starts, but with the expanded playoffs, Washington may still have a chance to crawl their way back. As for Boston, they may have already dug too deep of a hole. Especially in a loaded American League, playoffs look extremely unlikely. Boston is set to call up Chris Mazza in this spot, who is 0-1 with an ERA of 6.35 this season. He has only made two appearances this season, allowing four runs over a total of 5.2 innings of work.

The Nationals counter with Max Scherzer, who is 2-1 on the season with an ERA of 4.31. This ERA is unusual for a guy with the quality of Scherzer, but he has just not been effective as of late. His last start saw him get roughed up by the Miami Marlins, allowing four runs over 4.2 innings. Scherzer has not fared well against the Red Sox though, posting a career record of 4-5 against them in 11 starts with an ERA of 5.90.

Even with Scherzer struggling, I trust him so much more than a guy who has not pitched in 11 days an one who did not look great when he did get his chance. I will back the Nationals to win this game comfortably as a lean.


Over Under Pick
Usually when Scherzer is on the mound, your first thought is an under, however due to his recent struggles and the inexperience of the Boston starter, I will be looking towards an over. Plus, there is the Boston bullpen, who is nothing special can almost never be trusted to close out a game without allowing some sort of damage. Matter of fact, the Nationals’ bullpen has had their fair share of struggles too, so we may actually see more runs in the later half of the game. Washington clearly has the better lineup here, but Scherzer has not exactly pitched well against Boston. Furthermore, he is 2-2 at Fenway Park with a 3.13 ERA, so he still tends to surrender some runs. I will back the over and will look for the Nationals to do the bulk of the work.

As one of the only teams to play on Thursday, the Dodgers blasted their way to two wins in a doubleheader with the San Francisco. Game one was a 7-0 victory, while game two was a little closer, but still ended 2-0. The Dodgers will now travel to Texas to kick off an interleague series with Rangers. Los Angeles will be expected to start Dustin May in the series opener, who is 1-1 on the season with a 2.79 ERA. The one issue with May is he tends to get in trouble sometimes so it rises his pitch count rapidly. He has only pitched 6.0 innings in two starts, meaning he has had four starts where he could not make it past 5.0 innings. Right now the Dodgers rotation is a little thin, so they need him to improve in this area, so they bullpen does not have to do as much every night. Luckily they are facing a depleted Rangers team, who has not looked good.

For the Rangers, they will turn to Mike Minor, who is having the opposite season of what he was expecting. This year, he is 0-5 with an ERA of 6.75. His home splits really have done him any favors either, going 0-2 with a 4.97 ERA. He has allowed 10 runs in his last 9.2 innings of work and I do not see a loaded Dodgers’ lineup letting off here. I will gladly back the Dodgers on the run line to crush Minor.


Over Under Pick
The Dodgers have shown before they can eclipse a total all by themselves, but with May on the mound, I would be hesitant to solely trust Los Angeles even against Minor. The Rangers’ offense has just much too anemic and I am not even sure they will be able to score more than two runs. It is almost guaranteed that the Dodgers will score five or more, but I do not trust Texas to keep pace. For that reason, I am going to trust May to shut down the Texas’ bats and will lean under here.

A day after sweeping the doubleheader against the St. Louis, the Pirates will try to ride that momentum into a series with the Milwaukee Brewers. Pittsburgh is set to start Derek Holland in this game and to say he is a below average pitcher would be an understatement. Holland is 1-1 on the season with an ERA of 6.17. His last start was actually against this Brewers team where he held them to one run over 5.0 innings, but certainly did not look great doing so. It took him a total of 99 pitches to even get through 5.0 innings, so he continues to be somewhat ineffective.

The Brewers had the opposite happen to them on Thursday as they were swept in their doubleheader against the Reds. Looking to halt their losing streak will be Corbin Burnes. He is 0-0 on the season and has a decent ERA of 3.42. This will be just his third start since rejoining the rotation. Burnes’ last start was less than ideal, allowing three runs over 5.1 innings to this Pittsburgh team.

With everything else going on, I am still not sure if the Brewers will be in the right mindset. They certainly did not play well yesterday against the Reds and I think we will continue to see them struggle. As a result, I am going to back the Pirates, but will do so on the run line just in case Milwaukee is able to win by a close margin.


Over Under Pick
Seeing what the Brewers did yesterday offensively, I am going to be looking towards an under. Also, remember that Pittsburgh’s offense is still not good an even though they had plenty of success in game one of the doubleheader on Thursday against the Cardinals, they scored just two runs in the night cap. Holland has been a little better as of late and I do not see him allowing more than maybe three or four. Same with Burnes, who can be serviceable at times and will likely keep the Pirates in check. This is still going to be a lean, but I will back the under and look for another lackluster offensive performance from both sides.

The Royals will make the trip to the south side of Chicago after having Thursday as an official off-day. They will start Danny Duffy in this game, who is 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA. Personally, this is better than what I would have expected from Duffy and while he is by no means an ‘Ace’ he can generally provide a quality outing. Take his last two starts for example where he earned a win in both starts, allowing two runs over a combined 10.0 innings.

The White Sox will start Reynaldo Lopez in this game, who is 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA. He will be making his second start since returning from the injured list. Last time out he did a decent job against the Cubs, but still allowed two runs over 3.1 innings. Luckily he has a prolific offense behind him, but even then it still might not be enough if he allows some early runs.

I like how Duffy is pitching at the moment, and I still cannot trust Lopez, so a lean to the Royals run line would be my play here.


Over Under Pick
The White Sox have been very effective offensively as of late, having just scored 10 runs by themselves against the Pirates. The Royals almost seem to be hit or miss, but with Lopez on the mound, I am expecting them to have at least some success. Still, this total is set very high and seeing that the under is 19-9-1 in Royals’ games this year, I am going lean towards these pitchers being able to keep their opponents in check and will back an under as a lean.
