MLB | Mariners vs Astros
Play on: Astros -1½ -127 at pinnacle

The MLB Comp play is on Houston on the run line at -1.5 runs. Game 974 at 8:10 eastern. The Astros fit a powerful 14-1 system that dates to 2005 for home favorites that are off a road favored loss vs an opponent off a road dog loss that scored 2 or less runs. Houston has won 21 of 28 at home vs a lefty, 56 of 75 vs losing teams and the last 4 off a loss. Seattle has lost 5 of 6 vs a lefty and 16 of 21 on the road vs .600 or better teams. They have Gonzales going and have lost 5 of his last 6 on the road and he is 0-5 vs the Astros. Miley for Houston has won 10 of 12 at home and the last 7 with 5 days rest. he is also 4-0 of late vs the mariner. With Houston 6-0 here at home in this series. Look for the Astros to coast. . For the MLB Free play. Play on the Astros run line. RV- GC Sports.

NFL | Packers vs Bears
Play on: UNDER 47 -110

UNDER 47
The Bears are currently a -3 point favorite at home in the first game of the NFL regular season. They renew their old rivalry with the Packers on Thursday Night Football and the UNDER has all the value here.
Chicago comes in off a stellar season that saw them go 12-4 and win the division. After the Packers dominated the rivalry for quite some time, the Bears got some revenge as they took both meetings last year.
For the Packers on the offensive side of the ball there are still some questions about how the offense will look under LaFleur and it’s going to be key that he and Rodgers are on the same page. The Bears offensive starters didn’t play much more to be honest, so I can see most offenses being really rusty in this opening game.
That will of course favor the defense. And Chuck Pagano inherits a unit that led the league in fewest points allowed (17.7 per game), takeaways (36), interceptions (27) and fewest rushing yards (80.0 per game).
Some trends to consider. Under is 5-0 in the Bears last 5. The Under is 7-3 in the Packers Last 10.
Back The UNDER 46.5.
Good Luck, Razor Ray.

Last season these NFC North Division rivals opened the year against one another at Lambeau Field, and it was the Packers hanging on for a 24-23 Week One win that landed Over the total of 44 1/2 points. When the teams played their second game at Soldier Field on December 16th, the game ended up 24-17 in favor of the host Bears in a game that held Under the total of 46 points.

46 points is the number for the total as I type my analysis here on Thursday morning, and my feeling is we are going to see a game that slips Over the posted price.

With Vic Fangio now the head coach in Denver, I think you are going to see just a enough of a slip on the defensive side of the football and I think all of those Unders (5 in a row and 6 of 7 to end last season, playoffs included) that the Monsters of the Midway played are going to have a few more games this season that land in the Over column.

Green Bay is now led by the offensive-minded Matt LaFleur, and so even though his future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn't see a snap of live preseason action, I would expect #12 to get comfortable under center pretty quickly in this game.

The Pack closed the season last year with Unders in 4 of their last 6 games, but let's remember that the numbers in this series do show Overs played in 4 of the last 5. The Over is also 5-1 the last 6 series meetings in the Windy City, and finally, the Packers are 7-1 Over the total their last 8 games played on Week One of the season.

LaFleur and Rodgers to get on the same page quickly this opening Thursday night game, and the Packers and Bears land at about 49 total points for an Over.

Washington has been on a bit of an Over run, as the Nationals come in on a 5-1-1 Over the total run in their last 7 games, but I am going to look for that run to be halted in this first game tonight at Sun Trust Park against an Atlanta team that has played each of their last 3, and 6 of their last 9 games overall Under the posted total.

I am looking for a pitcher's duel to be the top story tonight as Stephen Strasburg and Max Fried get the call for the first of four from Atlanta this Thursday night, and for the Under to be the play in this Nationals-Braves contest.

Strasburg has been in a groove over his last 21 innings, as he has allowed only 11 hits, and just 2 runs while striking out 30 batters. 2 of those 3 starts have landed Under the total. Strasburg is also 3-0 in his 3 starts this season versus the Braves, allowing no more than 3 runs to score in any of the 3 games he has worked against Atlanta this season.

Max Fried will look to keep pace with Strasburg, and all he has done is go 6-0 in his 8 starts since the All-Star Break with a 3.50 ERA. Fried has allowed 3 runs or fewer in 5 of his 6 August starts. In his lone start this year versus the Nats, he did allow 4 runs to score in his 5-plus innings. I look for that to change tonight at home in this series opener.

Just have the feeling that this one is going to see the pitchers dominate.

Play the Nationals and the Braves to hold Under on Thursday.

#3 R FOUR DREAMS (ML=4/1)
#4 TIZ PROMISING RVF (ML=3/1)

R FOUR DREAMS - This filly is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Kravets. Trainer Kravets moves this one down in the class scale to face a lower rated field. Look for a sharp effort with this class drop. TIZ PROMISING RVF - The ROI when Quinones and Kravets partner up is tremendous. This filly is in excellent condition right now. Ran second last time around the track and comes back quickly. Recent speed figs show dominant pattern of improvement.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 HORIZON (ML=7/2), #2 OUR CLAIRE BEAR (ML=7/2), #6 BIG SHOT POSSE (ML=9/2),

HORIZON - This questionable contender ran a mediocre speed figure last time around the track. She shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably suffer defeat in today's event running that fig. OUR CLAIRE BEAR - You always believe this equine has a shot to win, but she just misses often. BIG SHOT POSSE - Should be difficult for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed figure. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class figure, so put her on the likely underlays list.

http://www.trackmaster.com/images/tophat.jpgGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - TIZ PROMISING RVF - Horse did finish 2nd last out at Penn National, but was well ahead of the 3rd place finisher. What that tells me is she could improve today and find her way to the winner's circle for the 1st time.

# 8 ABJURE 9/5

# 4 TAPIZAR GIRL 15/1

# 2 ALWAYS LUCKY 5/1

I favor ABJURE here. Overall the Equibase speed figs of this racer look competitive in this contest. Must be considered given the class of races run lately. Casse has well above average gains at this distance/surface. TAPIZAR GIRL - Has to be carefully examined against this field displaying competitive figures lately and an average Equibase Speed Figure of 67 under similar conditions.

#6 SNAGGLETOOTH (ML=6/1)
#5 BOWMAN (ML=5/2)
#7 NO WAY NEVER (IRE) (ML=2/1)
#1 SPINNING JOEY (ML=4/1)

SNAGGLETOOTH - I do like the fact this gelding is back in a race so quickly. Trainer Rice moves this horse down the ladder based on class rating points to face a lower class field. Look for a nice effort racing against these lower level horses. Finished out of the money last out at Presque Isle Downs, but was within five lengths of the winner. Opening at 6/1 makes me think he's got a chance. This pony coming off a strong performance in the last month or so is a serious competitor in my book. BOWMAN - This gelding is rounding his way back into shape. Should perform well today. NO WAY NEVER (IRE) - I am keen on that latest outing on August 18th at Presque Isle Downs where he finished second. This gelding is rounding his way back into shape. Should perform well today. You have to really like that latest race figure, 84, which is the top last race speed figure of this field. SPINNING JOEY - This horse coming off a good contest in the last thirty days is a serious competitor in my opinion. This rider and handler have a profitable ROI when they join forces. Sprinters that come back to the races quickly are generally good plays. Expect this gelding to be far back early and come flying past them. This racer brings in a lot of cash per start. I believe he can increase the lifetime total in this event. Three consecutive improved Equibase speed figs (72-77-80) make this animal a dominant contender.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 CHUCKLES CANDY (ML=8/1),

CHUCKLES CANDY - Poor early position on Aug 14th for me to wager on at the probable odds in today's sprint contest. Will not be easy for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed fig. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put him on the likely underlays list.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Have to go with #6 SNAGGLETOOTH on the win end if we get at least 5/1 odds

# 1 ANGLE OF ATTACK 8/5

# 3 Q'S SONG 2/1

# 5 CAMPANIA 6/1

I've got to go with ANGLE OF ATTACK. Could provide positive dividends based on strong recent speed figs with an average of 65. Bocachica will most likely be able to get this filly to break out early for this event. Posted a very good speed figure last time out. Q'S SONG - Should compete admirably in the early speed clash which bodes well with this group. Should definitely be given consideration for this race if only for the solid speed figure put up in the last outing. CAMPANIA - There is a very good chance that this entry's late pace will improve with second time Lasix. This filly looks strong for this event since Figgins has a strong win percent with horses going this distance.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Sonny Gray, Cincinnati Reds (10-6, 2.80, $694): The Cincinnati starter is still Reds-hot (see what we did there?). Over Gray's last 12 games he's had 11 quality starts and last month he was practically unhittable. In August, Gray went 4-0 with a 0.74 ERA while holding opponents to a batting average of .142 through six starts.

Gray and the Reds are hosting the Phillies in afternoon action. Cincy is 7-0 in Gray's last seven starts at home and 7-1 over his previous eight starts overall. The Phillies will start Jason Vargas. Philadelphia is 2-4 in Vargas' six starts with the team, while he has has struggled with a 5.18 ERA. The Reds are -160 favorites.

SLUMPING

Matthew Boyd, Detroit Tigers (7-10, 4.58 ERA, $-945): Boyd was one of the few Tigers players that looked like he deserved to be in the big leagues, but even he is going through a rough spell lately. Over his last five starts he has an ERA of 8.00 while giving up 13 homers through 27 innings. The Tigers are just 3-13 in Boyd's last 16 starts.

Boyd and the Tigers are on the road today but are surprisingly not underdogs. They're playing another terrible team in the Kansas City Royals and another struggling starter in Glenn Sparkman. Sparkman is 3-10 with a 5.86 ERA and Kansas City is 0-8 in his last eight starts. Detroit is -124 and has been a road favorite just twice this season, losing both times.

3 STRIKES

CHASE THE ACE (AT HOME ANYWAY)

Milwaukee's Chase Anderson has been roughed up in two of his last three starts giving up five runs in four innings against the Cubs and 10 runs in under three innings versus the Nationals. That said, both of those games happened on the road where he has been atrocious all season going 1-2 with a 5.88 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and a batting average allowed of .301 in 12 games.

At home, Chase has been much better going 5-2 with a 3.63 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and a BAA of .206 through 15 outings.

Anderson and the Brewers are +110 underdogs at home against the Cubs today. The Cubs have been playing well recently but are still 11 games under .500 on the road this season while the Brewers are 8-3 over the last 11 meetings between the two sides in Milwaukee.

LEAVING THEIR HITTING HALOS AT HOME

Let’s start this by saying that it sucks that Mike Trout has wasted another amazing season playing for the Angels. Moving on. The Angels have really stunk on the road for most the last month or so, going just 3-15 in their last 18 road games, plating just 3.89 runs per game in the process.

The Halos continue their series in Oakland against the A’s, another place where they haven’t had much success. The Angels are 0-5 in the last five meetings in this matchup and 3-8 in the last 11 games in Oakland. Consider the A’s on the runline this afternoon.

NOT SO TROPICAL ROAD TRIP

Even though they won their last series there, the Blue Jays have been historically bad when playing at Tropicana Field. Get this. Toronto is just 36-75 in their last 111 games visiting the Rays. Just 36 of 111 games! And the Rays haven’t been that good the whole time.

Trent Thornton gets the ball for the Jays tonight as they face the Rays as +170 underdogs. Thornton's been roughed up by the Rays this season, allowing 14 runs in just 11.1 innings pitched. This feels like a Rays runline at home night.

PRESEASON RECORDS
Green Bay: 2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS, 4-0 O/U
Chicago: 1-3 SU, 1-3, 4-0 O/U

The Bears were limited to 15 points or fewer in three exhibition losses, while dropping to 3-6 in the last two preseasons. The Packers won both their home games, but lost both their exhibition contests away from Lambeau Field. Since 2016, Green Bay hasn’t lost a home preseason game by posting an 8-0 record.

2018 REVIEW
Green Bay: 6-9-1 SU, 6-9-1 ATS, 8-8 O/U
Chicago: 12-4 SU, 12-4 ATS, 8-8 O/U

The Packers qualified for the postseason for eight consecutive seasons from 2009-2016, which included a Super Bowl title in 2010 over the Steelers. However, Green Bay has been shut out of the playoffs the last two seasons, while suffering its worst record since Aaron Rodgers’ rookie season of 2008 when the Packers finished 6-10.

Green Bay didn’t win consecutive games once last season, while grabbing only one victory within the NFC North. Five of the Packers’ six wins came against teams owning losing records, as longtime head coach Mike McCarthy was fired following a Week 13 defeat as a 13 ½-point home favorite to Arizona. In spite of the struggles in the win column, quarterback Aaron Rodgers put together one of the best seasons of his career by throwing 25 touchdown passes and only two interceptions, while accumulating 4,442 yards through the air.

The Bears captured their first NFC North title since 2010 as Matt Nagy’s first season as head coach was an absolute success. Although Chicago lost to Philadelphia in the Wild Card round on a missed field goal in the closing seconds, the Bears won their most games since 2006, when they took home the NFC championship. Four of Chicago’s five losses came by three points or fewer, while the Bears covered the spread 11 times in 12 victories.

Mitchell Trubisky rebounded from a rough rookie season to throw for 3,223 yards and 24 touchdowns, but was intercepted 12 times. The acquisition of standout linebacker Khalil Mack from Oakland prior to the season boosted Chicago’s defense, which finished third in the NFL in yards allowed per game (299.7), and tops in the league in rushing defense (80 yards per game).

HOME/ROAD SPLITS
The Bears put together a solid 7-1 SU/ATS regular season record at Soldier Field in 2018 with the lone loss coming to the Patriots in a 38-31 Week 7 setback. Chicago’s defense yielded 17 points or less in five home games, while giving up 16 points in the playoff loss to Philadelphia. This was in stark contrast to the 3-5 home mark in 2017, as the Bears scored 17 points or fewer in regulation six times that season.

It took until the final road game of the season for Green Bay to break through away from Lambeau Field in a Week 16 overtime triumph over the Jets. The Packers had lost their first seven away contests, while covering only once in the road underdog role in a 29-27 defeat to the Rams as 7 ½-point ‘dogs in Week 8.

The Packers and Bears kick off the season in primetime for the second consecutive season after Green Bay rallied to stun Chicago, 24-23 at Lambeau Field in Week 1. The Bears jumped out to a commanding 17-0 halftime lead, highlighted by a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown by Mack on an errant screen pass by backup quarterback DeShone Kizer.

Rodgers exited the game in the second quarter with a leg injury, but limped back after halftime to lead an epic comeback as Green Bay erased a 20-0 deficit. Rodgers connected on a pair of touchdown passes to Geronimo Allison and Davante Adams early in the fourth quarter, while hitting Randall Cobb on a 75-yard scoring strike in the final minutes to put the Packers in front. In spite of the loss, the Bears grabbed the cover as seven-point underdogs, while the final touchdown pushed the total over 45.

Chicago picked up revenge against Green Bay in Week 15 by clinching the NFC North title in a 24-17 victory to cash as 5 ½-point favorites. Trubisky tossed a pair of touchdowns, including a 13-yard connection to Trey Burton in the fourth quarter to break a 14-14 tie. The win snapped a five-game skid to the Packers dating back to 2016, while Chicago beat Green Bay at home for the first time since 2010.

THURSDAY NIGHT HISTORY
The underdog has won outright in the Thursday night season opener in each of the past three seasons. The Broncos (+3) edged the Panthers, 21-20 in a Super Bowl matchup in 2016, while the Chiefs (+8) chased the Patriots in 2017 at Gillette Stadium in a 42-27 upset. Last season, the Eagles (+1) slipped past the Falcons, 18-12 in a playoff rematch, marking a victory by the home team in the league season opener for the fifth time in the last six seasons.

For the fourth time in five years, the Packers and Bears are meeting for a Thursday night contest and for the first time in this stretch, the game will be played in Chicago. Green Bay won the last two Thursday matchups with Chicago by double-digits, including a 35-14 blowout at Lambeau in 2017.

SEASON OPENERS
The Packers have won four consecutive Week 1 games with the most recent loss coming on a Thursday night at Seattle in 2014. Green Bay started the last two seasons at home as the Pack is playing their first road season opener since 2016 at Jacksonville when they edged the Jaguars, 27-23.

The Bears are looking to snap a five-game skid in season openers with the last Week 1 win occurring in 2013 against the Bengals. Chicago is favored in a season opener for the first time since 2014 when the Bears were tripped up by the Bills in overtime, 23-20 as seven-point chalk.

HANDICAPPER’S CORNER
Expert Joe Nelson checks in with his thoughts on these old rivals hooking up on Thursday, “There isn’t a clear consensus on either of these teams for 2019 with the Packers featuring an unproven head coach in Matt LaFleur and Rodgers battling injuries the past two seasons and last season featuring the lowest touchdown count of his career in a season in which he played in all 16 games. The Packers went just 6-9-1 last season, but six defeats came by a single-score as it isn’t hard to envision a turnaround in 2019 back to contention in the NFC.”

From a primetime standpoint, that advantage belongs to Green Bay’s All-Pro quarterback according to Nelson, “Trubisky has not yet played on a Thursday night game and he has eight interceptions in going 3-2 in night games in his career. Rodgers is 26-22 in prime time contests in his career, going 8-4 on Thursdays with 26 touchdowns and only four interceptions as there is a clear disparity in the experience levels on this stage.”

In the Week 15 matchup at Soldier Field last December, Nelson points out some interesting tidbits from Chicago’s seven-point win, “The box score reveals a few surprises from that most recent meeting with the Packers posting a big edge in rushing per attempt at 4.6 compared to 3.4 for Chicago, while Trubisky and the Bears averaged 3.0 more yards per pass than Rodgers and the Packers. Green Bay had twice as many penalty yards and took five sacks in a game that was led by Joe Philbin as an interim coach.”

LINE MOVEMENT
The Bears opened up as 3 ½-point favorites at the Westgate Superbook in Las Vegas back in April, as Chicago has dropped slightly to three-point chalk. The opening total of 46 has stayed put at the Westgate, which is a half-point lower than the Week 15 game in Chicago last season.

Packers and Bears reverse roles in opener
September 4, 2019
By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) The NFL's oldest rivalry takes on a different look to open the league's 100th season.

It's a role reversal for the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers.

A year after new coach Matt Nagy took quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and the Bears to Lambeau Field to kick off the season, the script flipped, with Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and new coach Matt LaFleur coming to Soldier Field.

''It was always big Chicago against little Green Bay,'' Rodgers said. ''We've held our own over the years and it's always been a great rivalry.

''It's one of the special ones in the history of professional sports.''

In Rodgers' experience the Packers trust, even using a new offense for the first time since he became starter in 2008.

''He's been there before, he's got a lot of game reps,'' LaFleur said of Rodgers. ''The one thing you can always find comfort in is that you know the moment won't be too big for him. He's played in a lot of big games.''

Rodgers has been a particular problem for the Bears, beating them in 16 of 21 starts. Last year Rodgers shook off a 20-point deficit in the second-half and a knee injury to lead a 24-23 win over Khalil Mack and the Bears.

Chicago returned the favor in December and ended Green Bay's five-game series winning streak to clinch the NFC North title en route to a 12-4 record.

Now it's a matter for Rodgers of using an offense emphasizing more running and deception while facing the NFL's top defense at intercepting passes (27).

''It's so new, it's so different than what we've done in the past,'' Rodgers said.

The Packers ran less than any team in the NFL last year, and look to get running back Aaron Jones more carries.

''Now we're throwing new things at them with personnel groupings and motions and alignments and movement and adjustments that they haven't seen from us,'' Rodgers said.

The Bears have revealed nothing offensively after sitting starters in the preseason, including Trubisky.

''He's mentally grown, he really has,'' Nagy said. ''That's what we look for, and now we have to do it on the field.''

The defense also sat out preseason, but inactivity failed to slow Mack in last year's opener. With no training camp and only five practices after his trade from Oakland, Mack decimated Green Bay's offense with a strip sack, fumble recovery, and a touchdown return after an interception.

He's aching to face Green Bay again as the Bears seek their first season-opening win since 2013.

''Oh man, I'm so ready to hit somebody other than my teammate,'' Mack said. ''You know what I mean?''

SAFETY SWITCH

The Packers will start free agent safety acquisition Adrian Amos, the former Bears safety, while his Bears replacement is former Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.

Clinton-Dix was traded by the Packers to Washington last year before signing for one year with the Bears.

''He's come in and he's been a great pro,'' Bears defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano said. ''All we ask these guys to do every single day - it doesn't matter if they were here before or they're new coming in - is what coach Nagy's expectation was. You come in and earn your way. Every single day he's done it.''

Amos is one of eight Packers starters on defense who are different than in last year's opener.

CHESS MATCH

Elements of surprise are at work in this matchup.

The Bears had to watch tape on Tennessee from 2018 to determine how LaFleur's offense operates. He was Titans offensive coordinator last year. Pagano, the former Colts coach and Ravens assistant, has altered the Bears' defensive look somewhat.

''I'm sure they're studying all the tape, just like we're going back and looking at Chuck from all the way back to Baltimore,'' LaFleur said. ''So yeah, again, it just goes back to having plays that start off looking the same that are different to try and keep them off a little bit.''

CHICAGO GUY

Rodgers disagreed with the notion he has a hatred for Chicago.

''I have a lot of respect for the city of Chicago and their fans,'' Rodgers said. ''I grew up a fan of Michael Jordan and one of the channels we had on our 10-channel TV was WGN. So we got the Cubs games, as well.''

100 YEARS

Trubisky expressed how little the NFL hype machine about 100 seasons means to players.

''It really doesn't matter, all the hoopla, kicking off the NFL season, the 100th season,'' Trubisky said. ''If we get caught up in the moment and you let your adrenaline take over and you don't do what the team needs you to do, then I think you could do things that are out of character and put your team in a bad spot.''

INJURY CONCERNS

The availability of Bears tight end Trey Burton will be a game-time decision due to a groin injury suffered last week. A groin injury also kept him out of last season's playoff loss to Philadelphia.

The Packers likely will start rookie Ty Summers at inside linebacker due to a torn pectoral muscle to starter Oren Burks and a knee injury to backup Curtis Bolton.

TNF - Packers at Bears
September 1, 2019
By Kevin Rogers

Absolute huge series with the Twins on deck next for the Indians and a battle for first place in the central so I see it as very possible that they lose track of the White Sox today who try to get a win before heading home to Chicago. We are seeing some sharp money come in on this game and the value is there for sure. Reynaldo Lopez needs a bounce back start after not making it out of the first innings previously. Love the White Sox to get us a plus money win.

This game features the 67-72 Giants and the 78-61 Cardinals. Giants got a big win yesterday and I think they have more of the same in store for the red birds today. Good young 22 year old starter Logan Webb fighting to show he belongs in the big leagues will have full motivation here. Grab the plus money with the Giants for an 8* Winner.

1 Unit FREE PLAY on Baltimore Orioles -112
John Means is one of the few bright spots for the Baltimore Orioles this season. He is 8-9 with a 3.70 ERA in 22 starts this season, including 7-4 with a 2.97 ERA in 13 home starts. Means has a 2.37 ERA in his last three starts coming in as well. He faced the Rangers on June 5th and only gave up one run in 6 innings for a 1.50 ERA. I expect Means to take down Kolby Allard and the Rangers today. The Rangers are 5-12 in their last 17 road games. Give me the Orioles.

10* FREE MLB PICK (Cubs -114)
I'll take my chances here with the Cubs opening up their big series at Milwaukee Thursday night with a win. Chicago got the momentum back with a 2-game sweep of the Mariners before Wednesday's off day and will have Brewer-killer Jose Quintana on the mound. Quintana has a sensational 2.65 ERA and 0.996 WHIP over 16 career starts against Milwaukee. He comes into this outing in great form, posting a 2.16 ERA over his last 3 starts. The same can't be said for Brewers starter Chase Anderson. In his last 3 starts, Anderson has a 11.92 ERA and 2.118 WHIP. Last time out he gave up 5 runs on 7 hits in 4 innings to none other than these Cubs. Give me Chicago -114!

1* Free Play on Nationals -110
Many are looking to the Nationals (78-60) as one of the only teams with a chance to take down the favorites for the World Series title. However, the Nats will have to make the postseason first, and they’ll have a chance to pull themselves closer to the NL East-leading Braves (86-54) when they visit Atlanta tonight.
Perhaps the biggest weapon in a Washington jersey is Anthony Rendon, who’s become the dark horse in the NL MVP race previously dominated by Cody Bellinger and Christian Yelich. On the season, Rendon is batting .338 (NL best) with 32 home runs and 114 RBIs (tied for NL best).
Beyond Rendon, good pitching figures to be on display as Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg (16-5, 3.47 ERA) faces Braves left-hander Max Fried (15-4, 4.05 ERA).
Strasburg is a perfect 3-0 with a 3.93 ERA in his three starts against Atlanta this season. In those games, Strasburg posted a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 23-to-7. In five career starts in Atlanta, Strasburg is 4-1 with a 3.21 ERA, and has struck out 49 versus just seven total walks.
Fried has faced the Nationals twice as a starter and once more in a relief role. In those outings, Fried is 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA.

1* Free MLB Pick on Washington Nationals -110
I like the Nationals to take the first of seven huge games against the Braves over the next 10 days. Both of these teams are finishing strong. Washington is 17-5 over their last 22 and Atlanta is 17-4 in their last 21.
Both teams are swinging the bats well, so for me it all comes down to starting pitching. I definitely give the edge to the Nationals in that department. Washington will send out Stephen Strasburg, who has been unbelievable both of late and against division foes.

Nationals
The Washington Nationals have chased the National League East lead all summer, and now they get their chance to draw closer when they open a four-game series Thursday at the division-leading Atlanta Braves. The first-place Braves and second-place Nationals play seven times in the next 11 days, and even though Washington has baseball’s best record since May 24 (59-29), they remain seven games back as the Braves have played just as well since that date (58-31).
The Nationals missed an opportunity Wednesday to gain ground on idle Atlanta by losing for just the seventh time in the past 27 games, falling 8-4 at home to the Mets despite two hits and two RBIs from third baseman Anthony Rendon.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (16-5, 3.47 ERA) vs. Braves LH Max Fried (15-4, 4.05)
Strasburg is putting together one of the best seasons of his career, leading the NL in wins and innings pitched (179), while ranking second in strikeouts (215) and sixth in WHIP (1.04). The 31-year-old has lost just once in his past 13 starts with 100 strikeouts in 83 innings, including a 14-strikeout performance with two hits allowed over eight shutout innings Saturday against Miami. Strasburg is 3-0 with a 3.93 ERA in three starts against the Braves this season, striking out 23 with 18 hits surrendered over 18 1/3 innings.
Fried has emerged in his first full season in the major-league rotation, trailing only Strasburg in wins in the NL by going 6-0 with a 3.50 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in eight starts since the All-Star break. The 25-year-old went 4-0 in six August starts, allowing three earned runs or fewer five times and finishing the month by striking out 11 while allowing three earned runs on four hits over six innings Friday against the Chicago White Sox. Fried lost his only start against the Nationals this season, allowing four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts across 5 2/3 innings on May 28.
Back the Nationals.

Jack’s Free Pick Thursday: Washington Nationals -108
The Washington Nationals are 17-5 in their last 22 games overall. They have been playing well for months and it’s been fun to watch their celebrations in the clubhouse. This team is playing for one another right now. Look for them to take down the Braves, who they are trailing in the NL East.
Stephen Strasburg is 16-5 with a 3.47 ERA and 1.039 WHIP in 28 starts this season. He has been dominant of late, going 1-0 with a 0.86 ERA and 0.619 WHIP in his last three starts. Strasburg is 4-1 with a 3.21 ERA with 49 strikeouts and only seven walks in five career starts at SunTrust Park.
Max Fried is 15-4 in spite of a 4.29 ERA and 1.386 WHIP in 26 starts for the Braves this season. He is 1-0 with a 6.19 ERA in his last three starts. Fried is also 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA in three previous appearances against the Nationals, two of which have been starts.
The Nationals are 40-13 in Strasburg’s last 53 road starts. Washington is 41-11 in Strasburg’s last 52 starts vs. NL East opponents. The Nationals are 7-0 in their last seven vs. a left-handed starter. Washington is 7-1 in Strasburg’s last eight road starts against the Braves. Bet the Nationals Thursday.

MLB | Mariners vs Astros
Play on: Astros -238 at betonline

Take the Houston Astros with the money-line versus the Seattle Mariners listing both starting pitchers Wade Miley and Marco Gonzales. Houston (90-50) looks to bounce-back from a 4-2 loss at Milwaukee on Tuesday. The Astros have won 4 straight games after a loss. Houston has also won 40 of their last 53 games at home. Seattle (58-82) has lost four of their last five games after their 6-1 loss at Chicago against the Cubs. The Mariners lost 4 of their last 5 games after allowing at least five runs in their last game. Seattle has also lost 16 of their last 21 road games against teams with a winning percentage over 60% at home. I considered endorsing the Astros minus the -1.5 Run-Line — but their slumping bats (along with an injury to George Springer) along with the improved pitching of Marco Gonzales as of late (3.86 ERA with a 1.33 WHIP in his last eight starts). If anything here, take Houston with the money-line listing both starting pitchers. Best of luck — Frank.
