The Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics begin a short two-game series tonight. Marco Gonzales (10-7 4.24 ERA) will start for Seattle and Daniel Mengden (4-1 4.73 ERA) will start for Oakland. Gonzales has been having a pretty good season, but his numbers have been a little inflated due to two bad back-to-back starts on May 28 and June 2 where he allowed 16 earned runs in 8 2/3 innings. Outside of those two starts, Gonzales has allowed two earned runs or less in 12 of his 18 starts. Mengden has gotten beat up in three of his last four starts, allowing three, five, and six earned runs over 13 1/3 innings. Seattle has gotten the better of Oakland this season, winning seven of 13 and will get another win tonight with the better pitcher on the mound.

Arizona hands the ball to Alex Young (2-0, 0.68 ERA) who has been excellent in his first three major league appearances. Young has allowed a mere three hits in 13 1/3 innings but could be in trouble here as the Rangers are 8-3 in their last 11 home games vs. a left-handed starter.

TONIGHTS STAR - I'm focusing on the class of this horse, and this one is the 'classiest' of the bunch. Looking at today's class rating, this thoroughbred is encountering an easier field than last time around the track at Evangeline Downs.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 BLU BLAZE (ML=3/1), #4 PUDDIN'S THE MAN (ML=4/1), #6 CALL ME DUSTY (ML=9/2),

BLU BLAZE - Will be tough for this horse to beat this field off of that last speed fig. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put him on the possibly overvalued equines list. PUDDIN'S THE MAN - This animal likes to land in the top three, but doesn't usually get the job done. Keep out of the top spot.

Reason to like this filly as she has in the saddle one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. Horses trained by Acquilano in dirt sprint races are generally solid. APPIAN - In this field, this one is prominent in earnings per start in dirt sprint events. She has been racing strongly recently while recording strong Equibase Speed Figures. ANDROMEDA'S RISK - Is a solid contender based on figures garnered lately under today's conditions. Has been racing well in races of this distance, going 11 out of 45 under similar conditions.

BIG RED SEVEN - She must like the track here. She just won over the track after shipping in. She has the uppermost earnings per start. Give the once over to this one. HIDE A ROSE - A win pct like 33 is fantastic for any jockey/conditioner tandem. I like to see fast workouts. This mare's last one was very good. Second fastest of the day. Ran last time out against much better horses at Parx Racing. The move down the ladder based on class should suit her well.

Should definitely be given a chance for this race if only for the decent Equibase Speed Figure garnered in the last competition. MAGNANIMUS MAN - Put up a strong Equibase speed fig in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this affair. Has longshot potential and could win at high odds.
