        CFL | Toronto vs Saskatchewan
        Play on: UNDER 52½ -110

Here, Ben takes a look at the Canada Day "total," featuring the Toronto Argos and Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Last season's game between these teams, here at Saskatchewan, had an O/U line of 49.5. That game finished with 46 points, a 27-19 win for the Riders. We're working with a higher number this season; I feel that its generously high. The Riders are a capable defensive team. They shut down Hamilton quite effectively in Week 1 and should have success against a Toronto offense which has struggled out of the gate. After giving up 64 last week, the Argos are going to be highly motivated to improve defensively. Consider the Under.

T.M. Selection: Saskatchewan Roughriders (1* FREE PLAY)
Toronto won back-to-back pre-season games, but then had to sit through a Week 1 “bye.” Whatever momentum it may have had coming out of the pre-season was clearly lost in last week’s embarrassing 64-14 setback at home to Hamilton. Toronto’s offense wasn’t terrible, it actually produced 322 yards. The defensive side of things though was a complete disaster for the Argos, as they were gashed for 604 yards by the Ti-Cats (James Franklin was 16 of 26 for 211 yards and one INT, while McLeod Bethel-Thompson was 9 of 16 for 99 yards with one INT and one TD.) The Roughriders are sizeable favorites here and they’ll be eager to bounce back in front of the home town crowd after last week’s tight 44-41 setback at Ottawa (the Riders conceded 447 yards of offense, while producing 468. QB Cody Fajardo was 27 of 34 for two TD’s and no INTs). I have a hard time seeing the Argos fixing all of their problems in a week. Saskatchewan has issues as well, but Fajardo is so far fitting in seamlessly for the injured Zach Collaros and I believe his progression continues in this favorable matchup. Consider the home side in this one.

                    Ballpark Figures - Week 15
                    Joe Williams

                    Canada Day

The Kansas City Royals and Toronto Blue Blues Jays square off in an afternoon game on Monday on Canada Day, the equivalent of July 4 in the United States. It's a battle between RHP Glenn Sparkman and LHP Clayton Richard, so the runs could be plentiful at Rogers Centre on the holiday.

Kansas City limps in with 20 wins over the past 69 on the road, but they're 4-1 in the past five road outings against a left-handed starting pitcher. However, they're just 2-11 in the past 13 games on astroturf, and 1-5 in the past six in Game 4 of a series. They're also 15-39 in the past 54 games inside the American League East. While they've had some success lately against southpaws, remember they're also 17-35 across the past 52 vs. LHP.

Toronto looks to rebound after losing Sunday's game. They're 3-8 across the past 11 games at home, while going 17-39 in the past 56 games overall. The Jays are also a dismal 17-35 in the past 52 games against a right-handed starting pitcher, and 2-9 in the previous 11 against RHP at home. Both teams have had a case of the Mondays, too. Kansas City is 6-22 in the past 28 games played on a Monday, while the Jays are a rough 3-13 in their past 16 on Monday.

As far as the total is concerned, the over is 7-3-1 in the past 11 games on the road, and 5-0 in the past five vs. LHP. They're also 6-2-1 in the past nine against American League East foes. The Jays have hit the over in four of their past five home outings, and 7-2 in the past nine vs. RHP. The over is also 13-4-1 in the past 18 games overall, while also going 4-1-1 in the past six meetings in Toronto.

                    Looking Ahead

                    Monday, July 1

There are just five evening games on Monday, but all of them are divisional battles.

The Cubs are 3-10 in the past 13 games on the road, and 3-9 in the past 12 on the road vs. RHP. The Pirates have won four home games in a row, and seven of the past 10 overall. They're also 4-0 in the past four at home vs. RHP. In this series, the Cubs have won four of the past five, while the under is 9-2 in the past 11 meetings, including 4-0 in the past four in Pittsburgh. The under is also 5-0 in Trevor Williams' past five outings against the Cubs.

The Brewers have won four of the past five inside the division, but they're 1-5 in the past six on the road. The Reds have won six of the past seven at home, and they're 8-3 in the past 11 against teams with a winning overall mark. However, they're also 2-8 in RHP Tyler Mahle's past 10 starts against winning teams, and 5-16 in his past 21 outings overall.

The Orioles have managed to win just 20 of their past 81 on the road, and they're a dismal 5-23 in the past 28 on astrotruf. The Rays have enjoyed playing on Mondays, going 22-5 in the past 27 on the day. RHP Ryne Stanek is the opener, and Tampa Bay is 19-7 in his past 26 starts at home, and 21-9 in his past 30 overall. The O's are 3-14 in their past 17 trips to St. Pete, and 2-7 in the past nine meetings overall. The over is 10-4 in the past 14 meetings, 7-1 in the past eight in St. Pete and 4-0 in Stanek's past four starts against the O's.

The Angels travel to meet the Rangers, and they're just 14-38 in the past 52 road games against winning teams, and 1-4 in the past five inside the division. Texas is 7-1 in the past eight at home vs. LHP, while going 5-0 in the past five starts by All-Star LHP Mike Minor. They're also 5-2 in his past seven starts overall at home. The Halos have won just once in the past five in Arlington, too. The under is 20-7 in the past 27 meetings, 5-2 in the past seven in Arlington and 4-0 in Minor's past four vs. LAA.

The Giants have won just two of the past nine starts by RHP Jeff Samardzija. They're also 5-11 in his past 16 on the road, and 6-20 in his last 26 against teams with a winning overall mark. San Francisco is also 1-4 in the past five vs. LHP, and 0-4 in the past four at home against southpaws. San Diego has won four of the past five overall, and five of the past six at home. They're also 4-1 in the past five at home against San Francisco. In this series, the under is 4-0 in the past four meetings in San Diego, and 7-3 in the past 10 meetings overall.

                    Weather Report
There are only four outdoor games on Monday, and only the Angels and Rangers will be affected by the elements. They'll be facing a stiff 10-13 mph wind blowing in from right field to home plate.

                    Tuesday, July 2

The Red Sox use LHP David Price against the Blue Jays, a team which has been brutal against southpaws. Boston has won 14 of the past 17 starts by Price against teams with a losing overall mark, and they're 30-12 across his past 42 starts overall. The Blue Jays have won just two of the past seven starts by RHP Trent Thornton, and they're 2-5 in his past seven at home, too. In addition, Toronto is just 3-8 in the past 11 at home, 8-22 in the past 30 against winning teams and 20-48 in the past 68 against left-handed starting pitchers. In this series the Red Sox are a perfect 5-0 in Price's past five against the Jays, while going 20-6 in the past 26 at Rogers Centre.

The New York Yankees and New York Mets renew acquaintances in their interleague rivalry, this time at Citi Field in Queens. The Yankees, fresh off an offensive show in London in their two-game sweep of the Red Sox, use LHP James Paxton against RHP Zack Wheeler of the Mets. The Yankees are 4-0 in their past four road games, and 23-7 in the past 30 against losing teams. They're also 37-14 in the past 51 against teams with a right-handed starting pitcher. They're 8-2 in Paxton's past 10 starts overall, too. The Mets have lost seven of the past eight games overall, and they're 2-5 in the past seven at home. They're 4-0 in Wheeler's past four home outings, but just 1-4 in his past five against winning teams.

The Cardinals and Mariners kick off an interleague series on Tuesday night at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. RHP Jack Flaherty takes the ball for the Cards, while RHP Matt Carasiti is the opener, with LHP Wade LeBlanc to follow. St. Louis has won just one of the past six, and they're 2-5 in Flaherty's past seven starts overall. They're also 3-8 in his past 11 road outings, and 1-5 in his past six interleague starts. The Mariners are 4-1 in the past five outings at home, but just 19-40 in the past 59 games overall. They're also 0-5 in the past five interleague home outings, and 7-19 in the past 26 interleague battles.

                    Weather Report
The Angels and Rangers will again be the first trouble spot of Tuesday's slate. They're again face a stiff 11-14 mph wind blowing in from right field into the face of the batters. It's the opposite for the Astros and Rockies, as they face a 10-13 mph wind blowing out to the left-center field power alley for their interleague series opener. The Twins and Athletics face a 9-12 mph wind blowing out to straightaway center field in Oakland. The good news is that there is no precipitation in the forecast.

Max Scherzer and the best (and worst) MLB pitchers to bet on in July
                      Marc Lawrence

Washington pitcher Max Scherzer is one of the top pitchers in the business and has a habit of throwing the ball exceptionally well during the month of July.

Independence Day Fireworks and the MLB All-Star game always go hand-in-hand during the month of July. It also signals the start of the second half of the MLB campaign. And as we’ve come to learn, the key to every team’s fortune lies with the pitching staff.

Can these pitchers sew up critical wins or will they unravel like a Salvation Army suit? Stay tuned. What we do know is that certain pitchers love hurling this time of the season while others tend to get lit up like a roman candle.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of July. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in July, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each July over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record, we break down each pitcher’s greatest success, or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher (none this month), maintaining status quo from last season’s July list.

                      GOOD MONTH PITCHERS

                      Boyd, Matthew • Detroit Tigers • 8-4 (5-1 A)

The emerging ace was rumored to be in trade talks with the New York Yankees, but it appeared Detroit’s asking price was too high. He was on a 6-2 dog run until a recent 0-5 effort since mid-May reared its head. Boyd is distantly related to Hall Of Fame hurler Bob Feller.

                      Carrasco, Carlos • Cleveland Indians • 10-4 (5-2 A)

Out with a blood condition, no timetable for his return.

                      Chacin, Jhoulys • Milwaukee Brewers • 9-2 (5-0 H)

Chacin is having a very difficult season at 3-8 with a 5.60 ERA. His inability to spot pitches has really hurt him, allowing more walks and home runs after last year's 15-8 campaign. Let's see if July perks him up.

                      Cole, Gerrit • Houston Astros • 9-4 (5-2 A)

Cole is having a very good year with only one issue, but it still counts. Opposing batters are hitting just .211 against him, compared to .240 lifetime. His ERA is very close to his career norm of 3.38, but like most pitchers this season he's been plagued by the long ball, with 16 allowed after permitting 19 in all of 2018.

                      Hendricks, Kyle • Chicago Cubs • 8-4 (5-2 H)

Currently on the DL with a shoulder impingement, and Cubs officials have stated they will take their time to get Hendricks 100 percent healthy.

                      Hill, Rich • Los Angeles Dodgers • 9-3 (5-1 A)

This dude is 39 years old and a little crazy but is super effective. Nobody we've seen in recent years swears as much out loud as Hill, as you don't even have to be a lip reader to see that. However, the left-hander is ultra-competitive and has more variations of the curveball than an out of town salesman has singles going to a strip club. Unfortunately, Hill has a strained flexor tendon in his forearm and probably won't pitch this month.

                      Paxton, James • New York Yankees • 10-5 (6-2 A)

Because the Yankees have played so well, Paxton having an ERA a run higher than his career norm has been overlooked. He's catching too much of the plate and surrendering too many base-knocks. His worst outings are easy to tell, as his fly ball to groundball ratio is at least 2-to-1. Manager Aaron Boone is looking for a turn around in July.

                      Quintana, Jose • Chicago Cubs • 11-3 (6-0 A)

Quintana's been in a major slump and the Cubs really need him to come out of it. Almost nothing has worked for the 30-year of late and you can tell by his body language that if he allows a hit or a walk to start an inning, trouble is brewing. His inability to work inside, up and down the strike zone is hurting him.

                      Scherzer, Max • Washington Nationals • 11-4 (8-1 A)

Mad Max – the best hurler in MLB - is a regular on our monthly charts and he's back to mowing down batters after a sluggish start. Always known for great control and striking out hitters, Scherzer is at nearly an insane 8-to-1 for strikeouts to walks this season. Warning label: This guy is hotter than a firecracker!

                      Wacha, Michael • St. Louis Cardinals • 7-3 (5-1 H)

Its clear Wacha is not right this season, battling an assortment of injuries, all of which are all contributing to lackluster results so far. It's hard to determine when and if he will feel as close to 100 percent as possible, but maybe the heat of July will loosen everything up.

                      BAD MONTH PITCHERS

                      Bumgarner, Madison • San Francisco Giants • 4-10 (0-6 A)

Mad Bum has been an elite pitcher for a long time, but did you realize he's not had a winning season since 2016? Granted, the Giants are not close to their championship ways in the first part of this decade, but shouldn't he have a better record than 14-23 the last three years? Could be more of the same this month.

                      Leake, Mike • Seattle Mariners • 5-10 (2-5 H)

Mike Leake was never a great pitcher, as his 100-94 career record proves. At 31, he's lost something off the fastball and his breaking pitches no longer have the same bite. At this juncture, he's a back of the rotation hurler on a losing team, just like the one he's on in Seattle.

                      Matz, Steven • New York Mets • 4-12 (1-6 H)

The lefthander has never quite figured it out. At times Matz has looked devastating for innings at a time, then, he allows four or five runs and is yanked out of the game. In his five years with the Mets, he's given up better than a hit an inning and that is no recipe for success. Expect the negative numbers to continue.

                      Ray, Robbie • Arizona • 3-12 (1-7 A)

A super talented lefty who's never solved the mental part of the game. Ray averages 1.2 strikeouts an inning, which is high-level stuff for a starter. His problem is he can be sailing along for five or six innings, then, two walks, a single and home run allowed and suddenly Ray's given up a four-spot just like that. Focus has always been his undoing, particularly in July it seems.

                      Samardzija, Jeff • San Francisco Giants • 3-9 (1-4 A)

Samardzija's main attribute is that he's gotten paid along the way to still be pitching at 34 and making close to 20 million a year, despite having a 73-99 career record. Obviously, he's had a great agent. Samards use to have a decent sinker/slider mix, but at his current age, the velocity has dropped and too often he's tossing slop, while just trying to miss bats, without a great deal of success.

                      Teheran, Julio • Atlanta Braves • 5-10 (2-6 A)

Once thought of as an ace, the 28-year is just another pitcher who makes mistakes at the most critical times, which causes him and Atlanta to lose. His .225 batting average allowed this season is below what he's done in the past (.235), but too much nibbling has led to too many free passes and ultimately Teheran gets burned.
